PBS SOCAL and OUR L.A. Present ‘Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and The Politics of Race’

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- "Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" reveals the life and legacy of the first African American mayor elected in a major American city, with an overwhelmingly white majority, and will be broadcast on PBS SoCal on Thursday, October 6 at 8:30 p.m., Our L.A. announced today. The encore presentation of the award-winning documentary is being released during another historic Los Angeles mayoral race occurring now. It is also available on PBS.org, and on PBS and World Channel's Saturday Playlist Initiative on race.

"Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" tells the little-known story of Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley whose 1973 election was a remarkable political first in the history of race and politics in America. The documentary raises important issues about race, identity, and coalitions, and is especially relevant at this time when the nation is still at a tipping point in the struggle against racial injustice and police brutality.

Featuring never-before-seen historical footage and photographs, "Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" examines the creation of Bradley's extraordinary multi-racial coalition of African Americans, Jews, white liberals, Latinos, and Asian Americans, which redefined Los Angeles, transformed the national dialogue on race, and set the foundation for sustainable coalitions that encouraged the elections of minority candidates nationwide, most notably President Barack Obama. At the same time, the film examines the complexities and contradictions of Bradley's career as a bridge builder.

Produced by Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Lyn Goldfarb and multiple Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Alison Sotomayor, "Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" also brings into sharp focus the issues of police brutality in minority communities and the challenges of police reform, and shows how Tom Bradley, a former police officer whose political aspirations were shaped by the Watts Rebellion, could not break the cycles of poverty and despair that would ultimately spark the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest, and mark the end of his era.

Narrated by Emmy® Award-winning actress Alfre Woodard, with an original score composed by Stephen James Taylor, "Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" is a human story about struggle and success, conflict, and community. It is a classic, American story of determination against seemingly insurmountable odds; the story of a black man, the son of sharecroppers and grandson of a slave who fought poverty, prejudice, and bigotry to bridge racial divides. It is the story of the pressures which face our cities, the challenges of diversity, and the complexities of coalitions in a changing America.

"We are honored to return to PBS SoCal, during a mayor's race with many parallels to Tom Bradley's breakthrough campaign," says Lyn Goldfarb, the documentary's director, writer, and producer. "We believe in the power of storytelling and the value of our shared history. Tom Bradley's story is part of a critically important narrative for the City of Los Angeles and the nation in how he transformed American politics by bridging racial and ethnic divides."

"Remarkably, Tom Bradley's story is still not being taught in our schools, and our history books often exclude his significance in the national political landscape," remarks Alison Sotomayor, the documentary's producer, writer, and research director. "'Bridging the Divide' will provide a unique, historical perspective to illuminate our understanding of race and multi-ethnic coalition building in America. The story of Tom Bradley, no doubt, will encourage thoughtful reflection and conversation that will deepen our awareness of our lives and our world."

"Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" is streaming on Kanopy.com for free with a library card thanks to the support of participating libraries, colleges, and universities.

The documentary is also available on pbs.org. The website, https://www.mayortombradley.com/, provides an extensive look at Tom Bradley's life and legacy.

NJ Film Creator Exposes Wrongful Conviction: Documentary Calls for Justice in Alabama

ROSELLE, N.J. -- An independent African-American filmmaker with a relentless pursuit of the truth and justice, Jean Adam, Jr., has produced a stunning documentary that makes a powerful case: an Alabama white woman has been unjustly imprisoned for 30 years.

In "Finding Betty," a four-year project of filmmaker Jean Adam, Jr. (releasing his 80-minute documentary today) makes an overwhelming argument that Betty Wilson was wrongly convicted of murder conspiracy involving the death of her husband (Dr. Jack Wilson) in the early 90's in Huntsville, Alabama. The documentary provides incredibly meticulous research and a step-by-step examination of the many holes in the prosecution's case. It is a powerful call to action for Wilson to be set free.

In this murder-for-hire case, the principal witness in the case (James White) claimed Betty Wilson hired him to kill Dr. Wilson. However, White actually recanted his testimony years later. Remarkably, Betty Wilson's twin sister (Peggy Lowe), was also charged with murder conspiracy in the case, and was acquitted in a separate trial. Substantial evidence presented in Peggy's case, which showcased a light on Betty's innocence and undoubtedly helped lead to her acquittal, was not presented in her twin's trial.

"I have made this film my life's mission because it calls into question the integrity of the justice system itself," said Adam. "I won't give up until justice is done. We must show compassion for those suffering from injustice and create more awareness of injustice to prevent such unfairness from ever happening again."

Wilson, who speaks directly about the case in the film in candid and eye-opening interviews, calls Adam "her angel."

Adam contends the Alabama jury nearly 30 years ago was unduly influenced by the revelation Betty Wilson, a white woman, had a sexual affair with a black man. Adams explores the racial overtones in the trial.

"This was a passion project and I can see it reflected in the outcome," said actor/film editor Jolon Franklin.

The documentary presents graphic photos of the crime scene and makes use of re-creations to enhance the understanding of the trial. Adam hopes the movie will be a driving force for Wilson's acquittal.

Mo Brooks, an Alabama congressman since 2011, was one of the case's prosecutors.

You can rent "Finding Betty" for $3.99 or buy it for $9.99 on these streaming platforms: YouTube TV, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video. Just search "Finding Betty." Anyone with access to the Google Play Store or Apple's iTunes Store can purchase the product from their tablet, computer or phone.

Award-winning documentary, ‘Just One’ selected for August 3 screening at San Antonio Film Festival

CYPRESS, Texas -- One single encounter with the police can change a young person's life forever - especially children of color. "A Black or Brown child acting out at school or having a bad day can very quickly find themselves enmeshed into two very broken systems," says filmmaker and PrettyWork Creative CEO, Lisa N. Alexander. "Kiddos without family support not only become part of the juvenile correctional system but oftentimes the foster care system as well," she continued.

Alexander worked with Collective Action for Youth (CA4Y) to produce and direct the documentary, "Just One."

The film tells the story of two young people who overcame life in both systems and has been selected for screening at the 28th Annual San Antonio Film Festival. The film will screen on Wednesday, August 3 between 5 and 7 PM at the Radius Center, 106 Auditorium Circle #120, in San Antonio, TX.

"I had no idea what a dual-status youth was before taking this project," said Alexander. "I was unaware that this population even existed and that organizations like Collective Action for Youth were helping these incredible young people navigate their journeys," she continued. "It was truly an honor to help them tell their story," she said.

The documentary focuses on the stories of CA4Y staff members, Dieter Cantu and Angel Jackson. The two share the moment their lives were forever changed, how they overcame their challenges and the policies and legislation they're working to change. "In my initial meeting it was made quite clear that whatever work I produced had to depict them from an empowered place," Alexander remembers. "There would be no victimizing or 'white saviors' to edify," she recalled.

"Just One" opens with a dramatic court scene and has an unexpected twist at the end. It also includes a heart-wrenching interview with former Texas Juvenile Correctional Officer, Sharee Cammon. Harris County Dual Status Juvenile Probation Department Supervisor, Deidra Ewing assures viewers that the department is more "compassionate" and does what she calls "heart work."

This is the second film festival recognition for "Just One." The film won a Silver Remi from the 55th WorldFest Houston International Film Festival in April.

Transforming the Nation’s Prisons into Places of Healing: Compassion Prison Project and ‘Step Inside the Circle’ PSA Film

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- On February 12, 2020, 235 incarcerated men gathered in the yard of a maximum-security prison in California. They formed a circle, and in the center of that circle stood Grammy Award winning film producer Fritzi Horstman. She read aloud ten questions from the ACE test, a survey of Adverse Childhood Experiences.

So begins the documentary "Step Inside the Circle," the PSA film which is at the heart of the grassroots organization Compassion Prison Project. With a production team that included Academy Award nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, "Step Inside the Circle" has, in just a few short months since its release, reached over 2 million views.

By addressing subject matter that is often cloaked in shame, "Step Inside the Circle" bears witness to the damage done by childhood trauma, then ultimately guides us to embrace the ability of the mind, body and spirit to heal.

CDC research shows more than 60 percent of American adults have experienced at least one ACE as children, and almost a quarter of adults have experienced 3 or more ACEs. ACEs are a contributing factor in a range of health-related issues including increased risk for cancer and heart attack, ability to regulate emotions and even the altering of transgenerational DNA.

Compassion Prison Project's mission is to transform prisons and their communities through compassionate action, focusing on ACE awareness, facilitation of trauma healing programs, giving back projects and returning citizens support. Based on her own experiences with childhood trauma, Founder and Executive Director Fritzi Horstman and a core organizing team designed

Compassion Prison Project's approach to include partnerships with volunteers, governments, community-based organizations and prison administrations.

"Compassion Prison Project believes that the power to heal future generations is in changing the way we treat the most traumatized members of our society today," said Fritzi Horstman - Founder Compassion Prison Project.

"Trauma Is A Fact of Life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence," said Peter A Levine.

If you would like more information about this topic, please email media@compassionprisonproject.org or call Fritzi, Executive Director, at 310-428-8908.

Compassion Prison Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Founded in 2019, our mission is to transform prisons and communities through compassionate action.

Women and The Vote NYS Initiative Honors State Suffragists

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Women and the Vote NYS announces that a new initiative, timed to coincide with the 19th Amendment Centennial, is being launched to develop a mobile-friendly online database with interactive map of gravesites across New York State of the suffragists who worked tirelessly to bring about women's right to vote.

The goal is to catalogue both well-known suffragists, regardless of gender, as well as individuals whose contributions may be all but lost to history. Additionally, the site will provide links to voter registration.

A second focus of the project will take place on Election Day 2020, when filmmakers from across the state will be stationed at suffragists' gravesites to interview visitors coming with their "I Voted' stickers. Those interviews will be assembled and edited into a documentary film, ELECTION DAY 2020 NYS.

Residents across New York State who know of, or are related to, an individual who took an active role in the Suffragist movement are invited to help identify their gravesite by visiting the website http://www.womenandthevotenys.com/ and adding information, including:
* Name of the suffragist
* Name and location of the cemetery where the suffragist is buried
* Names of any living relatives
* Suffragist activities in which the individual was involved
* Photo of the gravesite or other historic photos

In addition to adding suffragist listings to the website, residents are invited to join the "Suffragist Search Parties," in which groups of volunteers will populate the website catalogue by entering information on suffragists.

Rochester-based party dates include:
* Saturday, February 22 from 10 am to 1 pm at the National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House Carriage House, 17 Madison St, Rochester, NY
* Saturday, March 14 from 10 am to 1 pm at the 1872 Café, 431 W Main St, Rochester, NY
* Friday, March 27 from 9 am to 12 noon at the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation, River Campus Libraries. University of Rochester
* Saturday, April 4 from 10 am to 1 pm at the 1872 Café
* Friday April 24 from 9 am to 12 noon at the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation

This project is the brainchild of Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker, programmer, and educator Linda Moroney, owner of Low to the Ground Productions. Linda will produce and direct the documentary ELECTION DAY 2020 NYS. Collaborating on this project will be award-winning storyteller Lorraine Woerner-MacGowan, owner of Four Cats Creative and Laura Chekow, film educator, aficionado, and community project coordinator.

In sharing the mission of this project, Linda Moroney explained, "After making ELECTION DAY 2016, it was clear there was a much bigger story to tell from New York State's vast involvement in the suffragist movement. Our goal is to connect the dots from that history to the present day and to shine a light on New York State's rich suffragist legacy, as inclusively as possible."

This program is being funded in part by Humanities New York with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The National Susan B. Anthony House & Museum serves as the fiscal sponsor for this project.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Producer/Director Victoria Marie of "Gray is The New Blonde," an award-winning and inspiring documentary about the outdated views and attitudes towards women with gray hair has perfectly captured the current zeitgeist of women worldwide owning their beautiful gray hair. The movie, which has already won 3 awards, will have its world premiere on January 23, 2020 in Los Angeles, California.

Ms. Marie focuses on the strong women reinventing what it means to go gray. Tossing aside society's outdated views and attitudes towards women with gray hair, these women are rocking this new look and creating a fashion forward statement around beauty, energy, and owning their own authentic style. These powerhouse women are changing society's notion of age and what it means to be sexy!

"Gray Is The New Blonde" was born from a YouTube video Victoria made about her own process of going gray. She was subsequently inundated with responses and knew then she had "hit a nerve."
