Lift & Care Systems Provides Durable Medical Equipment Checklist for Caregivers of Disabled Individuals

LAKEVILLE, Mass. -- Lift & Care Systems announces the release of the following durable medical equipment checklist for day programs, group homes, and other programs for the disabled. As a caregiver for the disabled, you will often discover that assessing the safety and quality of these programs is, at times, challenging, but one of the fastest ways to do this is by seeing if they have the following durable medical equipment on hand at their locations.

Wheelchairs

Most participants arrive at their day programs, group homes, or other events with their own wheelchairs, but having a few additional wheelchairs available is always a good idea in case of emergency. There is always a chance that a wheelchair malfunction or an emergency creates the need for an urgent escape from the building.

Patient Lifts

Portable patient lifts should be on hand in order to allow participants who have severe mobility issues to be moved anywhere on the premises as necessary. These can be lifts specifically designated as pool lifts for access into and out of a swimming pool or just to move the individual from place to place within the building.

Patient lifts are critical pieces of durable medical equipment in order to prevent strain on the caregivers for the disabled individual, as well as significantly reduce the risk of injury to the individual or the caregiver.

For more severely disabled individuals, these patient lifts might be installed as permanent track lifts that allow the individual to move (or be moved) from important areas of the building such as bedrooms, recreation areas, bathrooms, etc.

Ramps

Most buildings that have any public access are required to have ramps available for disabled individuals, but what about for vehicles that are used to transport these individuals around. Portable ramps are a must for those situations where a ramp might not be available or when access in and out of a vehicle might be necessary.

Grab Bars

Grab bars provide stability to disabled individuals in a variety of settings. These should be installed in any location where additional stability is necessary, such as near toilets, dining areas, or activity rooms. Portable grab bars such as Health Craft's Superpole(tm) or Superbar(tm) are also helpful in areas where mounted grab bars are not practical.

Railings

Rails installed in hallways, near ramps, and in places where disabled individuals might need help getting up and down from seated positions such as couches, chairs, beds, toilets, and baths are also very helpful.

Bath & Shower Seating

For locations where disabled individuals might live or spend long periods of time, it is a good idea to have shower and bath seating available for them. Another option is a roll-in shower, which is ideal for wheelchair users. Both types of equipment provide some degree of independence while still keeping them safe.

Lift & Care Systems Provides Resource Sheet for Massachusetts Caregivers

LAKEVILLE, Mass. -- Lift & Care Systems announces the release of the following Resource Sheet for Massachusetts Caregivers. "We tried to gather the best resources for anyone who has a loved one who has suffered from a disability," says Dave Austin, President of Lift & Care Systems. "This is a traumatizing event and it is understandable that caregivers might not know where to begin when looking for help. This is why we have gathered these resources together in one place."

Applying for Disability Services

There is basic information that will be needed to apply for disability services, no matter what organizations you work with. Here is what you will need:
* Social Security Number/Card
* Medical Records - Any information from doctors, therapists, hospitals, or clinics that might be necessary during the application process.
* Medical Provider Contact Info - The names, addresses, phone and fax numbers for anyone involved in the individual's care.
* Labs and Test Results
* List of Medications - Include the dosage and frequency of use information as well.
* Employment Information - A list of the individual's employers, employment dates, and a listing of job duties for the last 15 years.
* School Evaluations and Records - These school records are critical for any child with special needs because they document the issues that may impact the eligibility and scope of services offered.
* Financial Information

Disability Services Resources

Here are some of the best resources available for Massachusetts residents:
* Massachusetts Office on Disability (MOD)- This is one of the best places to begin your hunt for information. It provides contact information to get questions answered as well as links to various services.
* Mass.gov Disability Benefits page-Offered by the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC), this page guides you through the eligibility determination process.
* DisabilityInfo.org - This page provides links to a variety of basic programs and services for people with Disabilities. Everything from legal advocacy and assistive durable medical equipment to personal care and transportation assistance is covered on this page. This is a fantastic place to begin your research.
* Disability Benefits Center- This page has a free disability evaluation to determine if you qualify for services. This page is geared toward SSDI and SSI eligibility and recommends that you hire a Massachusetts social security disability attorney.
* Massachusetts Disability Resources and Advocacy Organizations- Created by OlmsteadRights.org, an advocacy group formed based on the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision Olmstead v. L.C., this site has a massive list of links to all sorts of disability services, organizations, and information of interest for anyone needing help for someone with a disability.

Caregiver-Specific Resources

Caregivers are impacted just as much as the individual who was disabled, and often need help. There are many local organizations and support groups around that can help. Speaking to your doctors or therapists is a great place to start. Other local resources to check out include churches and religious organizations, libraries, and community services organizations.

But don't overlook global organizations that provide support online such as these:
* The Family Caregiver Alliance - This site offers support for anyone in a family caregiver role regardless of that family member's disability.
* ARCH National Respite Network - This is a group that can help you locate respite care in your area. Everyone needs a break sometimes and this group can help you find respite care you can feel confident in whether you need that care for a disabled child or an elderly parent.
* AARP - This organization is all about helping seniors live their best lives but they also have information and support for caregivers of those seniors.
* VA Caregiver Support - If you are caring for a veteran, some of their needs may be different than those of civilians. VA Caregiver Support can offer help and information specific to caregivers of veterans whether it is navigating the VA system or dealing with service-related health conditions and injuries.
* Well Spouse Association - The Well Spouse Association offers help and support for those who are the caregiver to their spouse. Most of us promise in our wedding vows that we will be there in sickness and in health but wanting to be there and knowing how to help our partners and be their advocate can take practice and support.

"This is just a sampling of the resources available out there for Massachusetts caregivers," says Austin. "Remember that you are not alone in this struggle and that there are others out there who have been through what you are going through and can help."

Lift & Care Systems Offers an Annual Inspection Program for Group Homes, Day Programs and Care Centers

LAKEVILLE, Mass. -- Durable medical equipment such as ceiling lift systems and other patient transfer devices, pool lifts, chair lifts for stairs and platform lifts for group homes, day programs and care centers get a lot of use - a lot more use than your average residential home installation, says Lift & Care Systems.

When you combine heavy use with this complex equipment with many moving parts, breakdowns and problems with the equipment are almost unavoidable.

To help address this issue, Lift & Care Systems offers an Annual Inspection Program (AIP) to help assure that all of the durable medical equipment installed in your building performs well and works safely for all residents or participants in programs at your facility.

With over 25 years of practical, "in-the-trenches real world" experience, Lift & Care Systems knows where the problem areas within this equipment may be and, when combined with carefully following the manufacturer's inspection list, can uncover and resolve potential issues before they result in an equipment breakdown.

Benefits of an AIP Program for Durable Medical Equipment

The AIP is an inexpensive service that provides the following benefits for your group homes, day programs and care facilities:
* Keeps the equipment operating safely.
* Eliminates or minimizes equipment downtime.
* Avoids expensive emergency service calls.
* Assures that the equipment can handle the rapid transfer of patients in the event of an emergency evacuation.

Inspection Services for Durable Medical Equipment

"Your lift system is built with many safety features that we maintain according to the manufacturer's specifications, but we go above and beyond this level of service within our Annual Inspection Program," said Dave Austin, Owner of Lift & Care Systems. "We are committed to the safety and well-being of your loved ones, no matter where they are through the use of our AIP."

Here are just some of the services performed in an AIP:
* Check the battery performance, charging system, and safety limit switches.
* Ensure that the track/rail is well anchored and tightly secured as the day it was installed.
* Grease and clean any parts as needed.
* Inspect the condition of all parts.

Our trained and qualified technicians use specialized testing devices to uncover any issues with the installed durable medical equipment. If they uncover a problem that requires a part replacement, they will do so only with your permission.

Lift & Care Systems' Annual Inspection Program is well worth the price when you consider the cost of emergency service calls, expensive replacement parts and, most importantly, the peace of mind knowing that your loved ones are safe and well cared for within these facilities. We offer our AIP for equipment installed in residential homes as well.

Lift and Care Systems Now Offers Wheelchair to Car Transfer Devices

LAKEVILLE, Mass. -- Lift & Care Systems is proud to carry Access Unlimited's Multi-Lift and Glide n Go wheelchair to car transfer devices. The Access Unlimited Multi-Lift is designed to be used primarily with cars, but it can also be used for vans, trucks or SUVs.

The Multi-Lift allows you to lift a power wheelchair or scooter in and out of your vehicle, in addition to helping the individual enter and exit standard, unmodified vehicles. Another great benefit of using the Multi-Lift is that it can used in the home for bedrooms, bathrooms or wherever else it might be needed.

The Multi-Lift is the perfect general-purpose body lift system that can be used almost anywhere, whether it is needed to enter a hotel room or vacation home, used to get in or out of bathtub or pool or safely enter and exit a vehicle.

The Glide 'n Go lift is a portable, easy-to-use lift for transferring a patient from a wheelchair to a van, truck or SUV. It features a power lift and transfer seat that enables individuals with reduced mobility to enter and exit standard, unmodified vehicles. It works using the vehicle's own battery power to raise the individual up to the vehicle's seat height, or lowering the individual to the seat height of the wheelchair.

If for some reason the vehicle battery dies, don't worry, because the lift has an emergency back-up system that will allow the individual to exit the vehicle. The Glide 'n Go works on both the driver and passenger side of vehicles in either the first or second row of seats.

Both the Multi-Lift and the Glide 'n Go wheelchair transfer devices do not require drilling to install them in the vehicle. All that is needed is the make and model of the vehicle where the Multi-Lift or Glide 'n Go will be installed. The vehicle specific brackets will be provided to bolt the lift onto it. This maintains the resale value of your car.

"The Access Unlimited line of wheelchair to car transfer devices fills an important gap in our line of products for disabled individuals," said Dave Austin, President of Lift & Care Systems. "Not everyone can afford-or even need-a custom built lift system for their modified car or van. This makes the Multi-Lift and Glide 'n Go a great option for many families."
