‘Sopranos’ star Jamie-Lynn Sigler to lead a powerful cast at MANHATTANonPATRICK on September 27

FREDERICK, Md. -- Phenomenology, Inc., an innovative production model in the performing arts, announced it has secured "Sopranos" star Jamie-Lynn Sigler to lead a powerful cast in the staged reading of a new play for MANHATTANonPATRICK at the Weinberg Center for the Arts in suburban Washington D.C. on September 27.

Well known for her work in "Beauty and the Beast" on Broadway, HBO's "Entourage" and her unforgettable role as Meadow Soprano in HBO's ground-breaking television series "The Sopranos," Sigler will lead a four person cast as a cutthroat attorney in "Second Derivative," a full-length crime drama previously workshopped with the Maryland Ensemble Theatre and Off-Broadway with The Actors Company Theatre in 2016. The play was workshopped with both MET and TACT under a previous working title and Sigler was not a part of either project.

"We are thrilled to have Jamie join us for this performance," says Jeffery Keilholtz, Artistic Director & CEO of Phenomenology, and also "Second Derivative" playwright. "MANHATTANonPATRICK is the flagship theatre program for Phenomenology, specializing in the production of high-value limited engagement stage performances, with the purpose of identifying high-potential regional performers and technicians and giving them unique opportunities to showcase their gifts."

In its inaugural outing, MANHATTANonPATRICK will premiere a dynamic staged reading of "Second Derivative" for one night only at the historic Weinberg Center for the Arts - on Patrick Street, in Frederick, Maryland. The cast also includes Keilholtz, himself a Frederick native, along with Bru Ajueyitsi and Amanda Shafer. Mr. Ajueyitsi is from Washington D.C. and Ms. Shafer is from Frederick.

Critically-acclaimed actress, Ashlie Atkinson, of Spike Lee's Oscar-winning film, "BLACKkKLANSMAN", and Broadway's, "The Ritz", is attached to direct.

The evening will feature a red carpet reception, performance and post-show Q&A. Admission to the after party with cast members and the director is also available to a limited number of ticket buyers at an additional cost.

Adds Keilholtz, "The privilege of bringing together all of this talent, including both Jamie, as a performer, and Ashlie, as director, adds enormous value to the promise of MANHATTANonPATRICK and the endeavor of Phenomenology to create a new corridor of professional activity between Frederick, Maryland and major media markets - beginning with New York City, the theatre capital of the world."

Tickets for MANHATTANonPATRICK are available to the general public beginning August 15 at https://weinbergcenter.org/ or via box office hotline: 301-600-2828.

Latina Actress and Activist Yubo Fernandez Exposes Mental Health and Defeats Hidden Abuse in The Industry, Off Broadway This Summer

MANHATTAN, N.Y. -- Yubo Fernandez was a sponsored child from the Dominican Republic by a U.S. school; now she's an awarded actress, producer, director, activist and entrepreneur, presenting her third play in Off Broadway NYC. "Late for Martinis" is part of the Summer Play Celebration at the Manhattan Repertory Theater this July 18, 20 and 21, 2019 in Manhattan.

A monologue starring actress and woman advocate Yubo Fernandez, "Late for Martinis" shows the struggle and unfairness in the acting business - it gives everything to some and nothing to others.

Actors don't quit the business; the business quits them. To survive emotionally and psychologically they need to earn a living and nourish their self-esteem or ego. Some are manipulated and abuse by powerful people in the industry while others choose to lower their instincts to get recognition, this often drive them to depression and toxic live styles.

Written and directed by talented Cuban Playwright, Screenwriter and Director Alejandro Normand, adapted to English language by Yubo Fernandez.

For tickets go to:

Yubo Fernandez, 39, born and raised in a neighborhood with significant poverty at Dominican Republic, became a sponsor child of Plan International USA since age 8 by Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island. Today Yubo is an emerging multi-talented artist who's been recognized local and internationally for her work as an actress, producer and filmmaker.

In 2017 she visited Wheeler school to meet their sponsors who she called "angels" and gave thanks. She was nominated "Woman Of The Year" by a relevant newspaper in the Dominican Republic for her work as woman advocate. The actress started a #metoo kind of movement, being among the first announcing sexual harassment issues to her and other women in the industry.

Also, Fernandez is making the film documentary "Invisibles," which addresses sexual crimes in the Dominican Republic and other parts or the world like India, Brazil, Venezuela and London with real victims' testimonies, and interviews with actual condemned rapists.

As an entrepreneur, she has founded Obuy Films and is developing a vegan skin care line.

‘Love Jones the Musical’ Playwright Timothy Allen Smith takes on ‘Choice,’ with new stage drama

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Twenty/20 Productions announces Timothy Allen Smith, the wordsmith behind 2016's record breaking, "Love Jones The Musical," is premiering a new stage play at The Beverly Hills Playhouse in September 2019.

Smith, who followed up Love Jones with "Neighborhood Barbershop," starring Academy Award winner Mo'Nique, is back at it with "Choice." After dealing with such topics as black love on Love Jones and black family on Barbershop, Smith is not shying away from more controversial subject matter this time around.

"It's important as story tellers that we don't run from relevant topics, particularly when you're talking about people of color," says Smith. "Gospel plays and comedies focusing on family are great, but those aren't the only stories we can tell. We have to reach beyond subject matter considered safe for African American writers because, when it comes to issues that affect all of us, our unique cultural experience offers a unique insight that needs to be heard."

Smith says he wants to change the narrative. "The mere fact that something I wrote almost twenty years ago is more relevant today than it was then speaks to exactly where we are as a nation. We have to reframe the conversation so that it's less about changing anyone's mind and more about gaining understanding."

One thing that won't change with "Choice" is Smith's commitment to creating strong female leads. The show features one of his most compelling characters to-date. "When writing Choice, I honestly didn't set out to make any kind of political statement," says Smith. "We had been auditioning for another show and one of the performers blew us away in her audition. I was so inspired by her performance that I went home that night determined to create a character I felt would challenge her. That is where the character Michelle was born. I even named her after the young lady who auditioned that day."

Smith and team had a similar experience auditioning Ani Marderosian for the role of Kim in Choice. "When Ani walked in the room, I didn't want to let her leave. I kept asking the poor girl to stay and read again and again because, quite honestly, she embodied everything I was looking for and she made it look effortless. Talent like that is rare."

The role of Anna is being played by stage and TV veteran Joey Jupiter-Levin who, Smith says, is special. "Every great story needs a great antagonist, and every great antagonist has great charisma. That's Joey. She's just one of those rare performers you can't take your eyes off, even when you want to hate her."

The rest of the cast includes Thomas Channing Nash (Brian), Rodney Fitts (Gregory), Keelia Flinn (Julie), Jessie Reeder (Heather) and Mackenzie Possage as Michelle.

Smith is willing to tackle a controversial subject even though he knows it comes with some risk. "Anytime you deal with a divisive issue, you have to be willing to piss somebody off," admits Smith. "But at the end of the day we have to decide who we are. This nation was literally founded on the concept of self-determination and, the reality is, that's not always going to be pretty. People with free will and the right to decide for themselves are not always going to make choices you agree with. To me, the question is, do we still believe in a society where every citizen has the right to choose their own path?"

Author, activist, producer, and playwright Timothy Allen Smith is a native of Philadelphia. Currently based in Los Angeles, his latest project, "Choice" is set to open at The Beverly Hills Playhouse on September 7 and run through September 29.

Tickets for Choice are available for $25 at http://ChoiceTickets.EventBrite.com.

BU’s ‘Holmes Legacy’ Staged Reading Unveils Virtual TV Series

BOSTON, Mass. -- Sherlock Holmes fans! Boston University writers created a new TV series based on Stephen King's "The Doctor's Case" short story. "Holmes Legacy: The Doctor's Cases" is a six-episode drama about an older Dr. John Watson, who uses his memories of Sherlock Holmes to foil a new Moriarty and protect present-day London. Experience the live staged reading by professional actors at WBUR's CitySpace from 12-3 p.m. on April 27-28, 2019.

Get free tickets for the event at http://holmesdoctorscases.com/.

Adapted from a Stephen King short story and Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories, this virtual first season delivers deviously perplexing mysteries mixed with dark humor that's perfect for fans of Sherlock Holmes and modern crime dramas. Episodes 1-3 run Saturday with episodes 4-6 on Sunday.

The live staged reading will be the culmination of a BU Department of Film & Television course created and led by veteran writer/producer Kam Miller.

The vision? Help a writers room create a first-season TV show based on an existing property.

"I thought the students would enjoy working with Mr. King's take on the Sherlock Holmes characters and going back to the original works for context and inspiration," Miller said. "Our show's set in 2019 and 1975, so it's a different spin from the other Holmes adaptations we've seen since 1887."

Last spring, Miller shepherded another BU writers room for "Game of Thrones: The Virtual Final Season." The students' alternate season 8 "Game of Thrones" episodes have drawn more than two million views on YouTube. Outvisible Theatre Company Presents Sexy, Seductive Drama in Time for Valentine’s Day

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Outvisible Theatre Company presents David Ives' award-winning "Venus in Fur" - running February 14 through March 3, 2019. "Venus in Fur" is a modern take on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's "Venus in Furs," an 1870 novella which draws on themes of female dominance and sadomasochism, a term coined for the work.

"Good, kinky fun" - The New York Times.

"The first time I read this play, I was enthralled," said director, Adriane Galea. "It's so smart in the way that it weaves literary references and mythology and a dialogue on feminism into the story, but it also has this undercurrent of seduction. And the way it ends is really wild."

David Ives' telling of the classic tale places aspiring actress, Vanda Jordan, in an audition for Thomas Novachek's adaptation also entitled "Venus in Fur," reading with the adapter himself. The role of Vanda is being played by Dani Cochrane, who notes that the script is "an electrifying power play."

As the audition goes on, the lines start to blur between what is scripted and what is reality, as the two embark on a journey of dominance and submission, and who holds the power changes from line to line. As the story unfolds, it "will have you wondering at any given time, who is really holding the cards?" said Cochrane.

On the surface, "Venus in Fur" may seem like a play about S&M - as even Vanda notes throughout - but there's a lot more being said about societal constructs. Joshua Brown, who plays Thomas, notes that theatre helps the audience "rethink previous held beliefs - and to grow," and that's more aligned with the messaging of the play.

"The true gift of any art form is its ability to allow us exploration of all facets of our existence - and gain a further understanding of our world - to question limits. 'Venus in Fur' is such an opportunity," said Brown.

"Venus in Fur," which opens on Valentine's Day, is not a traditional date play, but could be a fun alternative to flowers and chocolate. Or for the single theater goer looking for good storytelling or to escape the drab winter, there is an opportunity to simply come see "an amazing story - that shows the empowerment of women no matter what their role," according to the show's costume designer, Cheryl Zemke of Z Creations.

Outvisible advises patrons that "Venus in Fur" contains strong sexual content and that minors will not be permitted to see the show without parental consent. "'Venus' is definitely the most risque show we've ever done here, but nothing is done for shock value; it's about art," said Galea. "At its core, this is a dialogue on sex and gender, but we want everyone to feel comfortable with what they're seeing, especially since our performance space is so tiny. But this show is something I could watch over and over again and discover something new and interesting."

About "Venus in Fur":
Thomas, a beleaguered playwright/director, is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic tale "Venus in Fur." Into his empty audition room walks a vulgar and equally desperate actress-oddly enough, named Vanda. Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda exhibits a strange command of the material, piquing Thomas' interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win.

Outvisible Theatre Company's production of "Venus in Fur" is directed by Adriane Galea (Dearborn). The cast includes Dani Cochrane (Ferndale) as Vanda and Joshua Brown (Flat Rock) as Thomas. Harley Miah (Wyandotte) is lighting designer, Cheryl Zemke (Riverview) is costume designer, and Danielle Gilbert (Allen Park) is stage manager.

In "THE FATHER" by August Strindberg, a wife will do anything to maintain control over her daughter's academic and religious education and goes so far as to cast doubts as to whether her husband is the father of that daughter. The husband, an army captain, is a scientist and a "free thinker" and would do anything to have his daughter educated in town and perhaps become a teacher.

An epic battle of the sexes ensues and everything and everyone is fair game, including manipulating the town Pastor and Doctor to play their parts. Written in 1887, this battle is as fierce now, as ever.

Summer Shakespeare Family Fun Faire at the Shore in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Children's Theatre of Long Beach (CTLB) presents its first Renaissance Faire experience! Partake of delicious food, Play medieval themed games, create fairy wings or armor and top it all off with a 60 minute version of Shakespeare's "MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING!" Aug. 4, 2018 in Long Beach.

For the last several years CTLB has been producing shortened versions of Shakespeare's works that are just perfect to introduce younger audiences to his timeless stories.

Philip Schwadron, Shakespeare instructor, long time Renaissance Faire performer and author does the cutting of the play specifically for these performances.

"I thoroughly enjoy crafting the abbreviated versions of these classics," stated Philip. "I get to spend time with my favorite author and grapple with the essence of his work. I try not to just edit for time, I really look to the core of what is important about all the storylines and original message of the piece."

"Much Ado About Nothing" is the story of young lovers Claudio and Hero getting married in just a week. Looking to pass the time, they conspire to get verbal sparring partners and confirmed singles Benedick and Beatrice to wed as well. Meanwhile, the wicked Don John conspires to break up the wedding by accusing Hero of infidelity. In the end, though, it all turns out to be "much ado about nothing."

This year in addition to the play CTLB has created an entire mini Renaissance Faire at Bay Shore Community Congregational Church to go along with the bard's hilarious play.

"We have Chef Cloyce Martin from 'Man vs Child: Chef Showdown' creating renaissance inspired food. Also, there are games and booths created specifically for this event," noted Hannah McMullen one of the show's coordinators, "as well as specialty acts that will perform throughout the day leading up to the play."
