Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘PIRATES’ dock in Long Beach May 11-20

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Children's Theatre of Long Beach (CTLB), Art in Relation (AIR) and the Scottish Rite Event Center present a historic, hilarious family friendly farce featuring silly pirates, bumbling policemen, and nervous naive young lovers - Gilbert & Sullivan's rollicking musical masterpiece, "The Pirates of Penzance," comes alive at the beautiful Ernest Borgnine Theatre at the Scottish Rite Event Center of Long Beach May 11 - May 20, 2018.

"The Pirates of Penzance" is directed by Jennifer Hammond, with musical direction by Jonas Sills and choreography by Cameron Shim. This trio have added their unique brand of silliness and satire to this classic, gathering a cast of 35 to tell the tale.

This marks the second time this talented crew has teamed up to bring Long beach family friendly theatre! Just last December they produced the popular "Christmas Carol"! Both companies founded in 2013, CTLB AND AIR found themselves on similar trajectories, producing musical theatre at the historic Ernest Borgnine theater in Long Beach, Calif.

Artists, producers and long-time friends, Jonas Sills (AIR) and Sean McMullen (CTLB) were reunited to produce this project, with the support of Tim Cable, manager of the historic Borgnine theatre.

"I am proud to be part of a partnership that is truly bringing excellent family friendly entertainment to Long Beach," said Tim Cable. "It is my goal to bring Long Beach to the Borgnine (theatre) and put it on the map!"

Jennifer Hammond, the Director, sums up the plot: "Young Frederic leaves his apprenticeship to the Pirate King and meets and falls in love with the beautiful, yet whacky Mabel. You see, usually Mabel is usually played as an overly dramatic leading lady, but our Mabel is a cross between Lucille Ball and Sarah Jessica Parker a collision of glamour and comedy." Hammond continued, "So, it followed that we should take a look at all our other leads and see them differently as well. Of course, madcap antics ensue and a very 'happily ever after' conclusion is in store for you."

Since the 1870's "The Pirates of Penzance" has been a favorite of musical theatre and light opera fans alike. Joseph Pap's irreverent hit production in 1980 transferred from Central Park and ran years on Broadway receiving five Drama Desk Awards and three Tony Awards. It then travelled to London for a run of 601 performances and in 1983 was turned into a movie that inspired thousands of productions ever since.

Parodies of "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General," the most famous G&S tongue-twisting fast-paced patter-song, have found their way into numerous movies and TV shows such as "Despicable Me 3" (the Minions song), "The Muppet Show," "The Simpsons," and many others.

Sean McMullen, President of CTLB and designer for this production, works in set design, costume design and is currently on faculty at the Orange County School for the Arts. McMullen, recipient of the Long Beach Hero Award, has a MFA in Theatre from CAL ARTS. The creation of CTLB, now in its fourth year, has been his lifelong dream.

McMullen explains, "This is our second Mainstage production in collaboration with Art in Relation and The Scottish Rite Event Center at the amazingly beautiful Ernest Borgnine Theatre. We are humbled and feel blessed to be part of this incredible collaboration!"

Jonas Sills, tenor, conductor and teacher who worked for 15 years as a public school music teacher for the Long Beach Unified School District at virtually every level with a focus on primary and middle school chorus. Sills has directed church choirs for the Unitarian and Methodist Churches and is the founder and artistic director for the Los Angeles Musical Theater Youth Chorus. In recent years he has been drawn to create his own art with his own production company, "Art-In-Relation," producing fully staged and professional productions in Long Beach and Los Angeles.

"It is a joy to work with such talented performers who have the generosity of spirit to bring light opera to kids in such a hilarious way and still sing like pros! Not to mention the 10 piece orchestra comprised of professional and student musicians and getting to perform at this historic gem in the heart of Downtown Long Beach," says Sills.

Children's Theatre of Long Beach (CTLB) is a dynamic theatre company serving the Long Beach Community and its families with school age children. CTLB strives to teach, inspire and create experiences that will leave a lasting impression on our young actors and it is our hope that those experiences will inspire them in all aspects of their lives well beyond the stage.

Art-In-Relation (AIR) is the brainchild of Co-Producers Jonas and Heidi Sills. Mentored by Producer Emeritus and co-founder Ray Buffer, AIR takes its acronym name as a nod to the Hindu deity, Vayu who was known to give life through breath. With new co-producer Jon Peterson AIR hopes to breathe new life into musical theatre productions, concert music, choral presentations, plays as well as creating opportunities to experience healing arts. Their goal is to house all of these ideas under one roof.

Scottish Rite Event Center (SREC) The beautiful Long Beach Scottish Rite Event Center was built in 1926 and designated Historical Landmark #8 by the City of Long Beach. The Center is located only minutes from beaches, airports, the Queen Mary and the civic center. They boast a beautiful 800 seat auditorium and numerous gathering rooms, large and small, ideally suited for theatrical performances, weddings, business social meetings.

Oberon’s Final Four Ticket Blitz for HALCYON DAYS

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- LanDan Consulting and the Oberon Theatre Ensemble (Brad Fryman, Artistic Director) announce Oberon's Final Four Ticket Blitz for "HALCYON DAYS" by Steven Dietz directed by Academy Award Winner Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman, Red Dog Howls) as Oberon celebrates its 20th Season.

"Sometimes when an Oscar winner comes back to his roots to make independent theatre, a little magic can happen. In this case it does and this compelling, prescient piece is why we continue to make theatre. It shines a light on how the political spin of today has been going on for a long, long time," said Brad Fryman, Artistic Director, Oberon Theatre Ensemble.

For these Final Four performances tickets are only $25 with special code OTEADVOCATES (reg. $37.50).

"HALCYON DAYS" final performances play at the Jeffrey and Paula Gural Theatre at the A.R.T./New York Theatres (502 West 53rd Street) and must close March 25, 2018.

Performances remaining are Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 24 at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are available now at: http://www.oberontheatre.org/.

"HALCYON DAYS" is a shrewd satire exploring what it took to get America behind the 1983 invasion of the western hemisphere's smallest country, Grenada. This eye-opening exploration of the D.C. "spin machine" is a brutally witty and thought provoking behind the scenes look at America's first public relations war.

The cast of "HALCYON DAYS" includes Rand Guerrero (Betrayal), Ralph Guzzo (The Count of Monte Cristo), William Laney (The Drawer Boy), Chris McFarland (Birdman), Hannah Jane McMurray (Dirty Dancing National Tour), Sarah O'Sullivan ("Banshee"), Tom Paolino (Everyone's Carol), and Gameela Wright ("She's Gotta Have It").

"HALCYON DAYS" features scenic design by Rebecca Lord-Surratt (Drawer Boy), costume design by Amy Sutton (All the Kids Are Doing It), lighting design by Greg MacPherson (Killer Joe), sound design by Nick Moore (The Drawer Boy), and projection design by Nathan W. Scheuer (A Chorus Line). Jenna R. Lazar serves as Production Stage Manager.

The Littlest Wiseman – The 100-year-old Holiday Tradition Returns for 57th Consecutive Annual Run

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Fort Worth production of The Littlest Wiseman started as a modest junior high school play about the humble birth of Jesus. Now in its 57th consecutive annual run, the play has evolved into an elaborate production that is one of Fort Worth's longest-running Christmas season entertainment events.

"It's a very simple heartfelt story set against amazing visuals and stunning scenery," said Assistant Director Suzi McLaughlin, a 44-year veteran of the production who was director for 17 years.

But the production wasn't always so elaborate as it is now, a cast member of the early years said.

"The play was a lot simpler - 'pretty much bare bones' - during the first years when The Littlest Wiseman was staged at McLean Junior High School," said Lloyd Walsh. "It was short and simple and didn't have singing and dancing. It was just a simple junior high play."

Walsh's parents, the late F. Howard and Mary D. Walsh, first saw the play in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Littlest Wiseman was written by the Walsh's longtime friend, the late Dr. Lloyd Shaw, superintendent of Cheyenne Mountain School District in Colorado where the play was staged for many years beginning in 1917. Shaw included poetry written by his wife, the late Dorothy Stott Shaw, throughout the script.

"My parents were very close with the Shaws," Walsh said, and they thought the play 'was so special' that "they wanted a Christmas pageant here [in Fort Worth] to give as many people as possible exposure to the story of Christmas."

The late Joe Cleveland, music teacher at McLean, produced and directed the initial Fort Worth production. It was his idea to add a bell choir to the school's music curriculum and to include the bells in a carol service before play performances. The Walshes agreed and purchased a set of bells for the school. Lloyd Walsh was among the original members of the bell choir, which was formed in 1964 and first participated in "The Littlest Wiseman" that year. In honor of their friend, the Walshes named the group The Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir.

"In 1966, the production moved from McLean to the newly opened Scott Theatre. The move offered opportunities for the production to expand and add more elaborate staging," said Walsh.

A grant from the Walsh Foundation funds all aspects of the production, which is truly a gift to the community because every seat at every performance is free.

Reserved tickets are still available for each of the remaining nine 2017 performances.

December 2 - 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
December 3 - 3 p.m.
December 5 thru 8 - 7:30 p.m.
December 9 and 10 - 3 p.m.

Performances are in the Fort Worth Cultural District at the William Edrington Scott Theatre located within the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, 1300 Gendy St., Fort Worth, TX 76107.

Art-In-Relation pairs two unknown works of musical theater art, ‘Wild Party’ and ‘Frankenstein, A New Musical’ in Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Art-In-Relation, Jonas Sills, producer, announces a move from Long Beach, after two successful seasons, to Hollywood with two hauntingly gorgeous, but lesser known musical theater productions at The Complex Theatres, Hollywood. A combination of "The Wild Party." a lesser known version of the musical based on the poem by Joseph Moncure, and written by Andrew Lippa, coupled with Mary Shelley's tale with a musical twist, "Frankenstein, A New Musical," with music by Mark Baron, lyrics by Jeffrey Jackson, and a book by Jackson and Gary P. Cohen, a Los Angeles premiere.

It seemed a perfect coupling to Jonas Sills, executive producer, to pair the musicals. "Both of them are raw, both of them are musically lush, and both of them are underperformed," said Sills.

Having an extreme interest in "Breathing new life" into musical theater, Art-In-Relation is excited about moving forward with a unique mission to offer and produce lesser known works of musical theater to an diverse Los Angeles audience.

The creative team for the two productions includes two teams led by two directors who have been with Art-In-Relation before. Quentin Garzon, Director, "Wild Party," is passionate about the 1920's era musical with lush score, harmonies, and innovative dance. Passionate enough in fact that he convinced Art-In-Relation to produce the show.

Having produced "Frankenstein" as their inaugural production, Art-In-Relation co-producer Ray Buffer was intrigued with the possibility of bringing the production to Los Angeles Audiences.

"Re-envisioning Frankenstein in a smaller, more intimate space allows us to create nuances in the performance that were not possible in a large space. This production will aim for visceral relationship between audience and storytellers, where the audience feels they are part of the mindscape," Buffer stated.

"I am grateful for this opportunity to work with a dynamic group of talented cast and crew on this new venture producing this under recognized work," Buffer added.

Sills is most passionate about intimate theater, and having the location and audience to foster it, a move to the heart of "theater row" was the "natural evolution."

"I am looking forward to continuing the success of these two winning shows with more under-noticed works in the future," noted Sills.

"The Wild Party" plays September 9 - October 2, 2016 in the "Dorie Theatre" at The Complex, 6476 Santa Monica Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028 (Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/TCMz59CsfRK2).

"Frankenstein, A New Musical" plays October 7 - October 30, 2016 in "The Flight" theater also at The Complex. Shows play Thursday, Friday and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Celebrity Manager Theodore ‘Ted’ Myles Terry Announces Success of Brainchild ‘Turn Me Loose,’ the Theatrical Performance Honoring Dick Gregory

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Theodore "Ted" Myles Terry, a Hollywood celebrity manager and former radio disc jockey, is celebrating the success of his brainchild, "Turn Me Loose," a one-man biographical adaptation of the life and times of Dick Gregory, the critically acclaimed master comedian, social/civil rights activist and humanitarian. Terry has been an integral part of Dick Gregory's management team since 1998, managing Gregory's engagement scheduling, website, the Dick Gregory Foundation, and more.

"Turn Me Loose," debuted May 19 at the Westside Theater in New York City and runs through July 3, 2016. It has received critical acclaim by the New York Times, WABC-TV, and other theatrical reviewers.

Emmy Award winning actor, Joe Morton (ABC "Scandal") stars in the show and has received high praise for his performance by New York and Hollywood critics alike. The production is written by Gretchen Law and executive produced by multi-Grammy Award winning recording artist, Golden Globe and Academy Award winner John Legend with Mike Jackson and Get Lifted Film Company.

Terry has worked on the concept for the production since 2002, and delivered 80 percent of the content for the production via "21st Century State of the Union featuring Dick Gregory," a 3 CD set is available at http://teesanet.thestore24.com/21st-century-state-of-the-union/9780962549892.

Terry's initial concept for the play included re-introducing Dick Gregory to a new demographic of Gen Xers and Millennials who may not know about the icon's contribution to African-American history and politics in addition to entertainment and lifestyle. In 2015, Terry was successful in getting Dick Gregory, 83, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

To bring his master achievement to fruition, Terry contacted writer Law to pen the play using "Dick Gregory's 21st Century State of the Union" as the primary resource for the stage play. After years of rewrites and edits, Terry connected with director John Gould Rubin and producer Jackie Judd to bring it to the stage.

"Gregory is a dynamic orator. I have always felt his story needed to be told, as his experience and message become more relevant decade after decade. I had the vision, he had the message and that made us a great team," said Theodore "Ted" Myles Terry. "I knew it was only a matter of time before funding for this production would follow. I just didn't realize how much time."

From the Playbill:

The "Turn Me Loose" Playbill - http://www.playbill.com/discount/turn-me-loose - states, "John Legend and Get Lifted Film Co. present a new comedic drama about the extraordinary and explosive life of Dick Gregory - starring 'Scandal's' Joe Morton - that shines a light on the first Black comedian to expose white audiences to racial comedy. Gregory confronted bigotry with shockingly disarming humor, marched alongside Martin Luther King, Jr., and deeply influenced comics from Richard Pryor to Chris Rock. He's been a prolific writer, muckraker, and provocateur, candidate for mayor of Chicago and for president of the United States. He was singled out by President Obama as one of his all-time favorite comedians. Experience the comic genius of Dick Gregory and the poetic final words of his mentor, slain civil rights activist, Medgar Evers: 'Turn Me Loose.'"
