Opening Thurs., Sept. 15: ‘Veils’ The Musical Takes Center Stage Reminding Us of The Price Paid for The Freedoms Won and The Women Behind It All

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) has teamed with Restoration Stage (Washington, D.C.) to bring the popular musical "Veils" to the Los Angeles area for a short run Thursday, September 15, and Friday, September 16 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, September 17 at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 18 at 8 p.m. at the Nate Holden Performing Art Center in Los Angeles, California. Purchase tickets at https://bherc.org/.

So much has been written about the men lost in the Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter movements. Unexplored, however, are the stories of the women whose lives are affected by these tragedies - the women who wear the "Veils." This musical is described as an emotional historical pageant of grief and resilience that pays tribute to women veiled in mourning, with a focus on Black lives lost in bloodshed during the sixties Civil Rights Movement to gain many of the freedoms we enjoy today.

BHERC believes that "Veils" on its own sends a powerful message of courage and sacrifice. However, as we find ourselves at the precipice of a democracy that is being contested, and the right to vote is being undermined as well as other freedoms, BHERC believes that "Veils" is truly a great example of the price that has already been paid for the gains being threatened. It represents the strong Women, like those who today are standing up and marching for justice.

"We are proud to bring this inspirational and compelling work to Los Angeles for a second time," States Sandra J. Evers-Manly. "The pandemic disrupted the performance in March 2020, but not this time. Everyone must come out to witness this incredible musical. It will inform, energize, and inspire you, with hope for our future as a people."

"Veils," the musical, is written by Steven A. Butler, Jr. with music and lyrics by Courtney Baker-Oliver and Christopher John Burnett and is directed by Courtney Baker-Oliver. Joining the West Coast production is soul singer, dramatist, educator, and activist Ayanna Gregory. The daughter of iconic comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory, Ayanna continues her father's work with deep awareness and concern for Human Rights expressed through her gift of music. More than entertainment; they are her mission. "She touches the place that is the deepest and clearest in my heart", Stevie Wonder. Filling out the cast are Bernie Alston, Steven A. Butler, Jr.*, Desire' Dubose*, Kandace Foreman, Bridget Garwood, Andrea Gerald, Robert Hamilton, Brandyn Marshall, Corisa Myers, Suli Myrie, Ayana Ogunsunlade*, Grace Pugh, Nakiea Washington Dade (*member of Actor's Equity Association). Stage Management by Ronald Lee Newman*, Musical Direction by Justin Thompson, Choreography by Kyra DaCosta *, Sound/Video Design by David Lamont Wilson*, Lighting Design by Stage Jerry Dale, Jr. Set and Properties by Courtney Baker-Oliver and Robert Hamilton, Costumes by Courtney Baker-Oliver & Luqman Salim, Technical Direction by Robert Hamilton; Executive Producer, Sandra Evers-Manly and Producers: Courtney Baker-Oliver and Steven A. Butler, Jr.

ACCOLADES INCLUDE:

"The singer-actors have created an exquisitely beautiful experience of enduring sorrow, honor, and healing." - John Stoltenberg

"The surprise is that with Veils two such multitalented African American young men have undertaken this profoundly womanist theme with such deep empathy and authentic respect. This, to my knowledge, is a first in theatre history." - DCMetroTheatreArts.com

"Tackles roles ranging from Sybrina Fulton and Mamie Till to Jacqueline Kennedy and Viola Liuzzo." - The Washington Informer

"I'm thrilled that my mother's story is one being told in this production which brings history to life and light." - Mary Liuzzo, daughter of civil rights martyr Viola Liuzzo

Plano Texas Resident Takes the Stage for 80th Time as Scrooge in NTPA’s Production of ‘Scrooge, the Musical’

PLANO, Texas -- North Texas Performing Arts announces that Plano resident Darrell Rodenbaugh, who has played the title role of Scrooge since the tradition began in 2011, is again taking the stage in its 10th annual Christmas celebration of "Scrooge - The Musical" presented by Transamerica.

This year's special tenth anniversary of "Scrooge, the Musical" will feature over 100 actors in this holiday favorite that has captivated in 80 performances over the past decade. This year for the first-time ever, NTPA will offer audiences an option to view "Scrooge, the Musical" from the comfort and safety of their own home with a livestream high-quality video experience.

Since 2011 and by the end of this year's schedule, Rodenbaugh will have taken the stage some 80 times, attended by over 10,000 patrons. Over a decade, Rodenbaugh has dedicated an estimated 2,000 rehearsal/practice hours into this role and "Scrooge, the Musical" productions.

While theatres often have multi-year program runs, it is highly unusual to cast the same character in the same leading role. NTPA creates an annual tradition centered around this program that typically includes caroling, visits from Santa, and special "Gift to the Community" shows where they waive ticket fees and provide gifts and treats to veterans, underprivileged, and this year, those stricken with Covid-19 economic challenges.

"I come back each year because I believe in Scrooge's very special message of rebirth and redemption," explains Rodenbaugh. "It teaches us that we have the opportunity to start our lives all over again and change for the better, and now, more than ever, we need this positive message of history's second greatest Christmas Story."

Rodenbaugh's performance was described in a Dallas Morning News review some years ago as "brilliant ... robust and passionate," and the show continues to gain each year in its following with many patrons making it a "Christmas Tradition" to see NTPA's "Scrooge - The Musical."

"You might think after ten years he would ease off, but each year he pushes to make it bigger and better," says the show's Director Mike Mazur. "And while he has brought the role to life so many times, each year he re-auditions and earns his spot, then goes on to become one of the hardest working members of the cast."

In this year's special production, Darrell will be joined by his son Christopher Rodenbaugh as Young Scrooge who played the role from its opening season through 2016. Unable to perform in the production since 2017 due to attending an out-of-state college, Christopher is excited to reprise the role once again this year which includes a powerfully heart-breaking duet with his father.

"Darrell continues to re-invent this character each year with such attention to detail," says Plano Children's Theatre Founder and four-time "Scrooge" Director Sara Akers who is now NTPA's VP of Community Affairs. "He effectively brings us from hating him to celebrating with him at the end and the entire performance is a true delight!"

"Our first year was largely as a 'team building' and fundraising activity for the Plano Children's Theatre (PCT) Board of Directors," explains Rodenbaugh, "and it's been humbling to see it grow from a little over a dozen to over 100 actors this year and become NTPA's biggest annual box office production."

Since reopening in June, North Texas Performing Arts has adopted a strict protocol of mask requirements, safe social distance guidelines, and health checks. Theatre seating is limited to enable distancing between groups in compliance with the Governor's guidelines, and streaming is available to those preferring to view these performances online. Actors must wear protective masks at all times (including onstage), and no more than 30 performers at a time are permitted on a safe socially distant stage.

In its exciting tenth anniversary production of "Scrooge, the Musical," this North Texas Christmas tradition has been critically acclaimed and historically plays to sell-out crowds. The show regularly tops regional "must-see" event lists for the Christmas Season. "Scrooge" closely follows the plot of Charles Dickens' acclaimed book, "A Christmas Carol." The movie adaptation received four Academy Award nominations and five Golden Globe nominations. "Scrooge" was written by award-winning songwriter Leslie Bricusse, creator of the musical versions of "Jekyll & Hyde" and "Willy Wonka."

This year's production is directed by award-winning and off-Broadway and international performer Mike Mazur, with support from the show's Music and Children's Director, NTPA Resident Director Kaitlyn Wright, and Choreographer, award-winning NTPA Resident Director Hannah Makepeace.

"Scrooge, the Musical" is sponsored in part by the City of Plano and Transamerica.

NTPA's Scrooge will offer 14 performances between December 9-20, with two "Gift to the Community" performances December 9 and 16 in the Rodenbaugh Theatre at Willow Bend Center of the Arts in The Shops at Willow Bend Mall at 6121 W. Park Blvd., Plano, TX 75093.

Modest Means with Big Dreams – A True Rag to Riches Story

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. -- Local Performing Arts School THE CENTER STAGE STUDIO (CSS) of Aliso Viejo, Calif. won a National Title & coveted "Sweepstakes Award" at "The Musical Theater Competition of America" held at Disneyland California this past weekend making THE CENTER STAGE STUDIO one of the top Musical Theater Programs in the country.

Top performance studios and public schools from around the country as far as Maine, Florida, Nevada and New Mexico traveled to Southern California to compete in the prestigious "The Musical Theater Competition of America" at Disneyland. Schools competed in different levels celebrating a 9 - 12 minutes medley of a musical as well as solos and duets in voice and acting and technical disciplines. The school with the top combined scores won the coveted "Sweepstakes" title of Top Musical Theater Program.

The Center Stage Studio under the direction of Tracey Ball and Choreographer Chloe Nethery won top honors with both of their group numbers; "Beetlejuice Medley" 1st Place Ensemble and an Alan Menken Medley for 1st place in Musical Review. CSS also won 1st place overall in acting solos (Mitchell Berg) and Vocal Solos (Colin Kerrane) & vocal duet (Delaney McCarthy & Mitchel Berg).

"Center Stage parents, you need to thank your studio administrators for having the honor of being a part of a truly remarkable studio. I am blown away," says Gary Krinke, MTCA Adjudicator and Fullerton College Theater Arts Administrator.

The Center Stage Studio opened its doors 15 years ago in 2005 with one room, a stage made out of boxes and a shower curtains sewed together for a stage curtain.

Modest means however big dreams by studio founder Tracey Ball. "I used to wake up at 6 a.m. and bring my pillow to my studio and lay by the phone in case it rang. It's one thing to have a dream but you hope that others believe in you too!"

Within one year, Tracey went from 18 students to over 200 being one of the 1st schools to secure licensing to "High School Musical." Within 5 years CSS acquired a theater, this time with real curtain rigging, an elevated stage and tech booth; Along with a full conservatory with classes in voice, acting, comedy, jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop, lyrical and acrobatics. A true triple threat performing arts center for kids.

"I grew up in Foster homes aging out when I was 17. My last foster family saved my life. I know what it is like not to fit in having gone to 8 elementary schools and 3 high schools. I am every child in the classroom. I am the child in the corner who is afraid to be the new kid. I go out of my way to train my staff to make sure every single child feels cared for and strives in their performing arts education. I'm not perfect but my heart is always in the right place. The sky is the limit. Dreams do come true and winning MTCA is another dream come true!" said Tracey Ball.

About The Center Stage Studio:

The Center Stage Studio, family owned and operated by Tracey Ball & Tony DiMiceli since 2005, spreading the love of performing arts with the children of Orange County being one of the very few specializing in triple threat education; acting singing and dance. First Faith and Family Film Musical ‘A Week Away’ to Release In 2020

19-1021-a-week-away-696x522.jpg -- Producers Steve Barnett, Gabriel Vasquez, and Alan Powell, and Executive Producer Corby Pons, announce the start of principal photography on the inspiring original musical "A WEEK AWAY" scheduled for nationwide theatrical release in 2020.

Newcomers Jahbril Cook, Kat Conner Sterling and Iain Tucker are featured in starring roles.

The story centers on Will Hawkins (Quinn), a troubled teenager whose recent run-in with the law puts him at an important crossroads; go to juvenile hall or attend a Christian summer camp. At first a fish-out-of-water, Will eventually opens his heart and discovers a love and sense of belonging in the last place he expected to find it.

The film's overall message of acceptance and forgiveness is blended with compassion and humor, set against contemporary music and dynamic choreographed numbers. "A WEEK AWAY" is directed by award winning music and commercial filmmaker Roman White.
