Students Complete HBCU Green Fund’s Fellowship – Primed for Growing Opportunities in Clean Energy

ATLANTA, Ga. -- After successfully completing a rigorous fellowship that exposes students to opportunities in clean energy and sustainability, Serena Echols was awarded an internship assisting a community in Florida that was exposed to contaminated groundwater. One of twelve students selected by the HBCU Green Fund to participate in their inaugural Atlanta University Center (AUC) Fellows Program, Echols will document the experiences of the residents and seek resources for long overdue environmental justice.

A partnership between the HBCU Green Fund and the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs (RICE), the AUC Fellows Program connects students at Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College with entrepreneurs and professionals that provided training, mentoring and internships in energy and STEM industries. A grant to RICE from the U.S. Department of Energy provides resources for the program.

"The inaugural AUC fellowship was a huge success," said Illai Kenney, national program director, HBCU Green Fund. "Whether you look at the increase in catastrophic climate events or the impacts of oil on the global economy, the critical need for a swift transition to clean energy is clear. This program will help expand the pipeline of skilled professionals required to achieve energy independence. We're proud that AUC Fellows are primed to train their peers, educate their communities, and capitalize on emerging green infrastructure opportunities."

The students were introduced to various energy careers and gained hands-on training in renewable energy technologies. They conducted energy audits of buildings in Atlanta, received instruction on electric vehicle charging stations, and learned to mount solar panels. The program emphasized information on starting an energy-related business and identifying business opportunities. The fellows also attended the annual BIPOC Climate Justice Dialogue, a discussion between climate justice scholars, organizers, academics, and government officials about opportunities in President Biden's Justice40 Initiative.

"It was very helpful to be able to question someone who works in sustainability daily and has created a profitable business in the area," adds Echols, an environmental science major headed into her senior year at Spelman College. "I am excited about the internship the HBCU Green Fund helped me secure at the University of South Florida where I will explore the cultural construction of risk in a peri-urban African American community whose groundwater was contaminated by chlorinated solvents from the former American Beryllium Corporation site."

The AUC Fellows were trained by successful Black entrepreneurs and executives who work in the energy sector; many of them are also HBCU graduates. Dr. Anthony Kinslow, CEO of Gemini Energy Solutions; Sheryl E. Ponds CEO of Dai Technologies; Gilbert Campbell, CEO of Volt Energy Utility LL; Kristal Hansley, CEO We Solar Energy; and the WDC Solar team provided instruction. AUC faculty mentors Dr. Armita Davarpanah and Dr. Fatemah Shafiei (Spelman College), Dr. Cynthia Hewitt (Morehouse College), Dr. Olu Olatidoye and Dr. Myron Williams (Clark Atlanta University), along with Spelman Facilities Director, Arthur E. Frazier.

The 2022 AUC fellows are:

Sophia Boyd (Spelman), Serena Echols (Spelman), Indrianna Bowleg (Spelman), Brionna Findley (Spelman), N'Dya Jeffries (Clark Atlanta), Conrad Mctavish (Morehouse), Jason Gill (Morehouse), Ihunanya Destiny Agomuoh, (Spelman), Noah Bacon-Angevine (Morehouse), and Andre Brown (Morehouse). Two additional fellows joined late in the semester: Jonathan Banks (Morehouse) and Kahlea Henry (Spelman).

Singing Dog Vanilla Sponsors a New Guinea Singing Dog From a Wildlife Sanctuary

EUGENE, Ore. -- Singing Dog Vanilla has partnered with Wizard of Paws Wildlife Education & Conservation Inc. in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Vanilla company, known for its silly name, will sponsor a New Guinea Singing Dog named Kora Nakako. They will help support the animal's well-being and educate their fans about the breed.

The company chose the name Singing Dog Vanilla after these dogs and to honor the first Fair Trade Plus+ Farmers in Papua New Guinea. The farmers found the name hilarious. Co-Founders Bill Wiedeman and Marty Parisien felt a silly name was perfect for the brand.

"We're thrilled to work with Wizard of Paws Wildlife Education. The opportunity to follow Kora and learn about these animals is very exciting. We hope our fans will enjoy learning about these dogs from a closer perspective," said Marty Parisien, the company's co-founder.

Singing Dogs are a rare but fascinating species native to the island of Papua New Guinea. One of the many unique qualities of these dogs is that they do not bark; instead, they "sing."

Wizard of Paws Wildlife and Singing Dog Vanilla hope to learn more about this captivating species. Studying Kora will help preserve the New Guinea Singing Dog for years to come.

Modern Exploration Society Calls for Proposals for $15,000 Pathfinder Prize

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Hidden Compass, a women-founded media company and modern exploration society, has just announced a call for proposals for their first annual Hidden Compass Pathfinder Prize. The $15,000 prize will fund a curious team of modern explorers and allow them to share their discoveries with the public.

Hidden Compass is accepting proposals through July 20 at which point a panel of experts will review the submissions and select three finalists. Hidden Compass co-founders Sivani Babu and Sabine K. Bergmann, who will also serve on the advisory panel, say they're looking for one thing: creativity.

"We're interested in exploration in all its forms," says Babu. "We want the types of proposals to be as diverse as the people who submit them. Because in the 21st century, everyone should be able to be an explorer. So whether these expeditions touch on history, science, art, ethics, or something else entirely, we welcome them - and look forward to finding something we didn't even know we were looking for."

Innovation is not only welcome in the proposals but is also driving the process of selecting the winner. After the panel of experts selects the finalists, expedition teams will pitch Allies - members of Hidden Compass's modern exploration society, The Alliance. Allies will then vote to decide the winner, who will be announced at Hidden Compass's virtual Ethos of Exploration Event in late 2022.

The Pathfinder Prize is a nod to the days of old, when exploration societies funded grand expeditions. But while expeditions of the past often held conquest as a goal, the modern journey funded by the Hidden Compass Pathfinder Prize is intended to set its sights on curiosity.

Since its founding in 2017, Hidden Compass has pioneered ways for audiences to participate in both journalism and exploration. Drawing inspiration from farm-to-table trends in the food industry, Hidden Compass: The Magazine invites audiences to see and support where the stories they read are coming from. In 2020, the publication became the first in the world to host patronage campaigns for every journalist it publishes - on top of the storytellers' article pay.

"Modern media companies really miss the mark when it comes to honoring readers, storytellers, and explorers," says Bergmann. "Right now, we live in an era of clickbait and cynicism where we focus on humanity's greatest problems, rather than our greatest opportunities. We're different. We're ending the era of junk food media by uniting audiences with the humans, causes, and possibilities behind award-winning stories and groundbreaking expeditions."

About Hidden Compass:

Hidden Compass is an independent journalism outlet and modern exploration society transforming the way audiences participate in journalism and exploration. Co-founders Sivani Babu and Sabine K. Bergmann, who have 25 years of experience in journalism and publishing, launched Hidden Compass in 2017 as an alternative to unhealthy, clickbait-laden content - what they call "junk food media." In 2020, the company pioneered a unique business model, leveraging patronage campaigns to increase journalists' pay and audience participation. The following year, readership grew by more than 40 percent, and Newsweek named Hidden Compass a finalist in its Future of Travel Awards. Learn more at https://hiddencompass.net .

The Lowell Chamber Orchestra is proud to present ‘LCO Pride: A Rainbow of Repertoire’

LOWELL, Mass. -- The Lowell Chamber Orchestra is proud to present "LCO Pride: A Rainbow of Repertoire" on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Middlesex Community College in Lowell, Massachusetts. This chamber concert will celebrate Pride Month by showcasing LGBTQ+ composers from the Lowell area and around the world.

Creative director of LCO, Em Russell, states that putting on this concert has been a dream of the theirs since the orchestra's very first season! As well as works by Jean-Baptiste Lully, Benjamin Britten, this concert will showcase a World Premiere by composer Julia Moss, featuring soloist mezzo-soprano Julianna Smith, as well as exciting works by four other living composers.

Queer people have made many significant contributions to the classical music community, yet their identities are often concealed. This concert is meant to embrace and celebrate these identities, which we hope can one day become the norm in classical music culture.

Stylistically, this concert really has something for everyone, from poetry lovers to rock metal-heads. While Kevin Lubin's string quartet "The Flower Shop" includes a spoken narration with words by Virginia Woolf; Hannah Rice has written a Heavy Metal string quartet called "SQ666," which has been composed using techniques from heavy metal rock music.

This concert also features a variety of ensemble sizes, varying from string quartets all the way up to large ensemble works conducted by LCO's music director Orlando Cela. Steven Sérpa's "An Invocation," for solo oboe and strings, is a tone poem inspired by his long-time collaborator, queer poet Jeffery Beam, about the small beauties of nature. Sérpa has also written about more difficult topics, including an oratorio on HIV stigma with Inversion Ensemble and an opera responding to the Pulse nightclub shooting with companies in Chicago, Montréal, Hartford, and Austin.

Ethan Soledad's "Why Wait," for a 9-person ensemble, is about his own journey of self-discovery and defeating self-doubt. Ethan's music has been described as "bold, dramatic, and unapologetically expressive."

The largest work of the afternoon will be a World Premiere by composer Julia Moss: "The World is Too Much for Us". Written for mezzo-soprano soloist Julianna Smith and a 10-person chamber ensemble, the work is based on conversations between the composer-performer pair about the feeling of being overwhelmed by the ever-growing clutter of life. Inspired by these ideas, she chose to set the piece to a poem by William Wordsworth about how we have become so obsessed with possessing material items and controlling nature.

"By drowning out nature," Moss says, "we are really drowning out ourselves. The piece is meant to be an optimistic and empowering reminder of what we should really be paying attention to." In the fall of 2022, Moss will enroll at the University of Southern California's (USC) Thornton School of Music to earn a Masters in Music Composition.

"We also wanted to show through our programming that queer composers have stood the test of time. There are so many composers whose music we play all the time and whose names most anyone would recognize, but nobody knows they were queer. Tchaikovsky, for instance. He was queer. Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten, just to name a few more of the "classics." And of course this doesn't even start to scratch the surface of the loads of queer composers living today, nor accurately represent the diversity that exists among them. But this is why we wanted to program someone as old as Baroque composer Jean-Baptiste Lully, who was born in 1632, to show that we really have been here all along, only now can we start to proudly assert our identities."

TICKETING / DONATION INFO:

The Lowell Chamber Orchestra is Lowell's first and only professional orchestra, demolishing the socio-economic barriers to classical music by always providing the area with music at a very high level, of all styles and eras. Consequently, this event is free of charge, but donations are kindly requested.

If you believe this concert to be a worthy cause and are able to contribute to the event funds, please donate at the link below. Thank you! https://glcf.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create?funit_id=2326

ACLENet and Government of Uganda Sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Further ‘Building Lightning Safe Communities’ Effort

CHICAGO, Ill. -- An important milestone for promoting lightning safety across Africa occurred with the February 2022 signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the US and Uganda-based African Centers for Lightning and Electromagnetics Network (ACLENet) and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) of Uganda. This MoU was piloted and promoted by the Ministry of Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees (MoRDP'R) within the Prime Minister's Office.

"My Ministry is working with ACLENet on the scientific aspects of disaster preparedness," said Hilary Onek, the Hon Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees. "It is the hope of parties involved in this partnership to make this optimism a reality," Onek explained during a Public Service Announcement (PSA), an integral part of engagements leading to the signing of the MoU that was broadcast during the 2021 holiday season in both English and Luganda, the primary indigenous language in Uganda.

The MoU is an important milestone for ACLENet, as it is expected to provide instrumental framework for: 1) A national mandate to plan, promote, and advocate for lightning safety across Uganda; 2) Introduction of scientific principles of lightning safety for people, property, and places according to globally recognized lightning protection system (LPS) safety standard provisions of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

"This partnership is expected to further ACLENet's goals of saving lives and property across Africa," said Dr. Mary Ann Cooper, Managing Director of ACLENet.

Data sets and information packages are being prepared for the Hon. Minister for onward submission to appropriate units within the Government of Uganda and general public and include priorities outlined in The United Nation's Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 as well as a database on lightning injuries.

"Specifically, ACLENet plans to expand the work piloted with programs and interventions over the last seven years and in partnership with the National Emergency Coordination and Operations Centre (NECOC), a specialized department of MoRDP'R," explained Dr. Cooper. "Together, we aim to advance the 'building lightning safe communities' effort by reducing the number of deaths, injuries, and property damage from lightning."

Here in the U.S., the International Code Council (I.C.C.) is celebrating its 42nd annual Building Safety Month campaign with the theme "Safety for All: Building Codes in Action," to raise awareness about the importance of building codes in ensuring safety in spaces in which we live work and learn.

"Building Safety Month focuses on issues that impact our everyday lives: building safety, energy, water and disasters-factors of constant concern for homes, schools, businesses and communities," said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO.

Los Angeles Child Author Releases His Debut Book in Conjunction with Children’s Book Week

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Seven-year-old author, Sammy Wallace, will release his debut rhyming children's picture book, "I Slept in My Bed Last Night" (ISBN 979-8985784404; WF Publications), on May 2, 2022, in conjunction with Children's Book Week.

Sammy, a first grader at Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter School (Los Angeles), is excited to take part in this national literacy initiative. As a champion of Children's Book Week, he is donating a book to all his classmates and several libraries across the San Fernando Valley. He wants to encourage other kids to write books and hopes to serve as an inspiration.

"Kids make great authors because we know what other kids like," said Sammy. "I think more kids should write books...they just need to be encouraged and told that it's possible."

Sammy created the premise of the book at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Los Angeles. Due to school closures, Sammy kept busy with his imagination and often composed stories with his grandmother.

Sammy's grandmother, Dr. Gwendolyn Mukes, who transcribed the book for him, felt that it was important to help Sammy find his literary voice while maintaining a sense of wonder and imagination. "When we started on this project almost two years ago, our country was in a turbulent time. With the onset of COVID-19 and the spotlight on racial disparages, we really wanted Sammy to just create stories that were fun and lighthearted," said Mukes.

The book is a comical story about a boy who finally decides to sleep in his bed. While fast asleep, a mysterious monster wakes him up from his dream. Confused as to exactly what the monster is, and what the monster wants, the brave boy contemplates a series of possibilities as he tries to unlock the mystery.

Early reviews call the book "funny, engaging and delightful." The book will go on sale May 2, through Amazon, Barnes & Noble (online), and in a few select stores.

Clay Joule Ignites Passion To ‘Fight 4 Freedom’ With New Single ‘O’Dream’

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Talented singer-songwriter Clay Joule's and Fight 4 Freedom's latest single "O'Dream," is set to premiere on April 28, 2022 alongside a heartwarming music video. Brought to you by Truwan Records, the single touches on the on-going war taking place in Ukraine and carries themes of peace prevailing through hard times.

With every passing day, the fight for freedom taking place in Ukraine gets more and more intense. Ukrainians all across the country are giving up their lives to protect their human rights against the terror of the Russian army, and their struggle has inspired the world to stand to band together in staunch support of Ukraine.

Singer-songwriter Clay Joule is among those who have been touched watching this incredible struggle. Finding inspiration in wanting to spread support for the Ukrainians dream of peace, Clay Joule is debuting his latest single, "O'Dream," with his label Truwan Records. Featuring the plight of Ukrainians, the song is part of a movement called "Fight 4 Freedom," that the artist hopes will bring more support for Ukraine and their pursuit for justice.

To achieve this, "O'Dream," will be accompanied by a beautiful and raw music video, once again showcasing the Ukrainians' struggle against the Russian threat. Instead of making a show of the violence however, it instead features Ukrainian people, standing together peacefully in hopes of a better future.

This matches perfectly with the song itself, a soaring rock epic with dreamy vocals that hope to push and inspire listeners to show their support for the currently suffering Ukrainians as they dream for peace. It's exactly the type of song that can emotionally push the listener into making a difference. It's also sincere and genuine, which is important when it comes to a song like this.

Both "O'Dream," and its music video are set to debut on the Formosa Joule YouTube channel on April 28, 2022. On top of that, the song and video will also be part of a playlist where Clay Joule plans to release new and original musical videos every week.

As a statement, "O'Dream," is genuine and melodic, truly a show of the peace that the people of Ukraine dream for. To support Ukraine, Clay Joule, "O'Dream," and "Fight 4 Freedom," stay tuned for the single's debut on April 28. Links to the music video and channel can be found below.

Soundfly Debuts New Course with Synthwave and Electronic Music Icon Com Truise

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Online music school Soundfly has teamed up with dynamic producer Seth Haley, more popularly known as Com Truise, to release a new course on creating sci-fi-inspired electronic music. "Com Truise: Mid-Fi Synthwave Slow-Motion Funk" is available today as part of Soundfly's premium course subscription program, where students get unlimited access to a full library of creative music courses.

Haley opens up his creative process, starting with the sparks of inspiration he finds in retrofuturistic storylines, like the sweeping android astronaut narrative that's driven many of his albums. And he demonstrates the techniques he uses to pull a track together, building synth patches, sampling retro drum machine sounds, and leveraging '80s production techniques to create music that feels both nostalgic and novel.

Students will look inside the sessions of some of Com Truise's biggest hits, and follow along as he creates a brand new track from scratch. The unreleased song, "Dynetics" is available exclusively to Soundfly subscribers.

The course features more than 30 videos, as well as readings, downloads, stems, and more, and subscribers get access to Soundfly's Slack community of instructors, artists, and experts, where they can ask questions and get feedback on their work.

Heard most recently in his Super Bowl commercial with Coinbase, Com Truise has released three full-length albums, four EPs, and two compilations with famed electronic indie label Ghostly International. He's also done remixes for Daft Punk, Maroon 5, Tycho, deadmau5, and Neon Indian, among others.

"Com Truise's music is full of powerful contradictions - ambient textures with driving beats, vintage synths composing modern-sounding melodies, '80s production techniques but with all the power of the modern DAW," said Soundfly CEO Ian Temple. "The thing I've loved most about seeing inside his process is learning how to create entire worlds with your music, almost like you're making a film rather than a song. I'm so excited for the sounds that our students are going to be able to unlock within themselves after taking the course."

"I've stumbled across so many tutorials on YouTube of people trying to recreate my sounds over the years, and my reaction to that used to be to hold my techniques as closely guarded secrets," said Haley. "But I was never classically trained, and I had to figure out so much of what I do on my own. And so I think it's finally time to pass the torch to anyone who's willing to learn, and I hope other artists are able to take inspiration from the way I make music."

"Com Truise: Mid-Fi Synthwave Slow-Motion Funk" is available now and can be previewed for free at: https://soundfly.com/comtruise

About Soundfly:

Soundfly offers creative courses for curious musicians looking to spark their creativity, expand their skill set, and discover new sounds. Students can subscribe to Soundfly's library of in-depth courses on topics ranging from songwriting to hip-hop production, or take their music learning to the next level with Soundfly's custom mentorship program, pairing students one-on-one with an expert to achieve a personal goal.
