‘Can’t Look Away: Photographs of the Civil Rights Struggle’ New Docuseries Released by the Gund Gallery to Celebrate Black History Month

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Gund Gallery at Kenyon College is pleased to announce the release of the first episode in the new docuseries "Can't Look Away: Photographs of the Civil Rights Struggle."

"Can't Look Away" seeks to reveal connections between the Black Lives Matter movements and the Civil Rights struggles of the 1950s and 60s through conversations centered on select photographs depicting the Civil Rights Era.

Developed as a way for the Gallery to inspire our community to critically engage with some of the most pressing issues we face today, each episode will feature experts from across Kenyon College discussing photographs made available for the program by Gund Gallery supporters David Horvitz '74 and Francie Bishop Good.

These images demand our attention and compel us to think deeply about the legacy of racism in the United States, leading us to explore how history can inform the ways we respond collectively to the legacy of unresolved racial strife that continues in our time.

The series begins with a wide-ranging dialog on Burt Glinn's Little Rock, Arkansas, 1957 that touches on subjects from the powers of the US Supreme Court, to the racial politics of the Cold War, and the influence of press coverage on the success of protest movements.

Discussants in the series include Glenn McNair, Professor of History; Francis Gourrier, Assistant Professor of American Studies and History; Austin Porter, Assistant Professor of Art History and American Studies; and Jodi Kovach, Curator of Academic Programs at the Gund Gallery.

"We had originally planned to release the first episode of this series at the beginning of February, in celebration of Black History Month," says J. Christopher Fahlman '72, director of operations and visitor experience at the Gund Gallery and project manager for the series. "COVID-19 concerns presented a number of challenges to our production, but with all the participants' cooperation, we were able to responsibly and safely realize this project with only a modest delay."

"It was important to all those working on 'Can't Look Away' that we make a contribution honoring African Americans and people of color who enrich our country in innumerable ways and are so often met with violent racism in their daily lives," adds Caroline Culbert, director of communication and engagement at the Gund Gallery. "By fully leveraging our expertise exploring the discursive nature of contemporary art, and making the resulting works available online for free, we hope to further the conversation around racial justice in our community and encourage others to engage in the tough conversations that drive structural change."

We would like to extend a special thanks to our discussants, all our campus collaborators at Kenyon College, and our partners at Kokosing River Productions.

Funding for this video series was generously provided by David Horvitz '72 and Francie Bishop Good.

North Carolina Business Experiences Growth Despite Challenging Times for Many Early-stage N.C. Companies

DURHAM, N.C. -- Since the pandemic struck last year, many businesses have struggled to stay afloat and others unfortunately, have had to close their doors. But Trash Can Cleaning USA, a HUB-certified North Carolina company, has not been one of them. It's managed to flourish in times of economic uncertainty, and that's mostly due to its service offering - a unique way to keep customers' trash and recycle cans clean.

"In fact, we have several investors encouraging us to get into an expanded market - moving from a regional North Carolina business to servicing the mid-Atlantic area with some larger partners," Darrell Harris, president and founder of Trash Can Cleaning USA, says.

For homeowners, keeping trash and recycle cans clean is a task that typically falls to the bottom of the "to-do" list, yet, it's one that's important to ensuring bacteria and even viruses like COVID-19 stay under control.

Trash Can Cleaning USA's sanitizing process kills upward to 99 percent of all common bacteria and viruses, eliminating the risk of E. coli, staphylococcus Listeria, Salmonella, flies, maggots, mosquitoes, bees and other insects and rodents living inside trash cans.

The company's state-of-the-art cleaning vehicle follows behind the homeowners' trash and recycle pick-up service truck on the specified service dates, and cleans the cans after they're emptied. When it's done, Trash Can Cleaning USA sends the customer a text message confirming the job has been completed.

"Our innovation of killing 99.9 percent of all bacteria within a trash and recycled bin in less than a minute is unparalleled and unmatched by any service-based company in North Carolina. Our advancement in this industry allows us to be environmentally conscious in neighborhoods and communities we impact on an everyday basis," Harris says.

Trash Can Cleaning USA also cleans and disinfects dumpsters and eco-minded individuals can rest easy because the company uses 100 percent green materials. After the cans or dumpsters are pressure washed in 200-degree hot water, they're disinfected with a biodegradable cleaner and then finished off with an air freshener of choice.

The company also works with city and town municipalities, homeowner associations, businesses, schools, apartment communities and more. It services the following North Carolina areas: Raleigh-Durham, Chapel Hill, Morrisville, Cary, Apex, Wake Forest and Greensboro, but plans to add more areas are in the works.

About Trash Can Cleaning USA

Founded in 2017, Trash Cleaning USA currently employs 12 people. Its mission is to achieve a one all-encompassing goal: to provide a streamlined and stress-free trash, dumpster and recycled bin cleaning service. Monthly and quarterly contracts are available and so is a one-time service. Trash Can Cleaning USA, is a minority owned business and is a certified HUB vendor with the N.C. RoboSolucio LLC Partners with Rock Springs Elementary to Use AI Puppy Robot Teacher’s Assistant

ATLANTA, Ga. -- RoboSolucio, an innovator in artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for mobile robot companions, announced today that it has an agreement with Rock Springs Elementary, an Atlanta-area school in the Gwinnett County School System. The COVID pandemic has negatively impacted students nationwide and Rock Springs is applying innovative methods to maximize educational outcomes for both remote and in-person student learning.

Teachers are overwhelmed trying to manage both remote and in-person students, often doubling their workload. Remote students are especially challenged due to less personal video interaction along with distractions in the home environment, often not participating. In-person students miss context due to masks covering facial expressions and they are often distracted while fidgeting with their own masks.

According to the agreement Rock Springs will implement RoboSolucio's AI Puppy in selected classrooms to offer critical services to students that need the most assistance. AI Puppy will assist teachers by delivering mini lessons, giving them a partner in the classroom while helping students rise.

AI Puppy is a mobile autonomous robot with a personality. In addition to human-like expression and voice dialog, it has many advanced capabilities that bring it to life. When teachers and students see AI Puppy in action they immediately light up with a smile and form a connection with the cute robot.

The goal is to improve student outcomes while reducing teacher stress. AI Puppy's COVID symptom detection and fall detection is a great compliment to the teacher's assistant, helping to provide a safe learning environment. AI Puppy is the perfect assistant for teachers, receptionists, security guards, elderly, and children.

About Rock Springs Elementary

The vision of Gwinnett County Public Schools is to become a system of world-class schools where students acquire the knowledge and skills to be successful in college and careers. One Good Job Leads to A World of Great Outcomes – Robotic Process Automation Comes to Clarksdale, Mississippi

CLARKSDALE, Miss. -- "What is the value of one good job?" asks Crossroads Economic Partnership. For Spencer George, it means higher income and better well-being for himself and family. It also means understanding his own higher potential. Just a few years ago, living in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Spencer wouldn't have dreamed he could ever work in the development and distribution of leading-edge technology.

Clarksdale is located in the Mississippi Delta, the poorest region in the poorest state in the nation. Decent jobs have been traditionally hard to come by, and certainly high-tech jobs were once unimaginable for this flat, agricultural region along the Mississippi River.

But at the Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Center of Excellence, opened in 2020 in Clarksdale at the PeopleShores Center, Spencer is not just dreaming, he's living his dream. And now in his new job he's also helping other workers around the globe discover their own higher potential, as RPA automates business processes through software bots, relieving workers of low-level, repetitive tasks and allowing them to engage more meaningfully and creatively in the workplace.

A new day in Clarksdale

Like Spencer, Clarksdale is discovering its potential as a newly vitalized gigabit city. Known as the birthplace of the Blues, Clarksdale now hums with new ideas and excitement, in an era which began with the development of an ecosystem of leadership fostered by the Crossroads Economic Partnership.

"We've come together to make a new day," explains Jon Levingston, Executive Director of the Partnership. "Today we are collaborating at every level, weaving a network of economic, governmental, educational, and social leadership. We are transforming expectations and changing lives for the better."

Learn more: https://crossroadseconomicpartnership.com/

Expanding manufacturing, breakthrough technology

Results have been immediate and impressive: Since 2018, five new economic development projects have been completed in Clarksdale involving both expansions and startups. Arriving in 2018, PeopleShores is a global leader in impact sourcing. A Silicon Valley-based for-profit social impact enterprise, PeopleShores is committed to helping underserved communities by creating tech-enabled jobs that provide office solutions for multiple sectors, including tech, retail, travel, banking, and insurance. In 2020, Automation Anywhere, a global leader in RPA, joined with PeopleShores to create the Automation Anywhere / PeopleShores Robotic Process Automation Center of Excellence for training people in the development of AI software.

"We are strategically located just south of Memphis and the Tennessee border, but we offer that hometown feel," said Clarksdale Mayor Chuck Espy. "After attracting PeopleShores, a Silicon Valley company, we want to capitalize on that momentum. Clarksdale is open for business and we're ready to do the work."

Workforce development has gone well beyond expectations of company management. Custom training in partnership with Coahoma Community College and the Delta Area Workforce Board has prepared PeopleShores associates quickly and strategically, expediting their participation in the Automation Anywhere University certification process.

"Through our partnership with Automation Anywhere and regional leaders, we are training associates to become bot developers in as little as six months," notes Murali Vullaganti, founder of PeopleShores. The company expects to train 200 associates from across the region. "We've taken the plunge; we've come here and we've proven that they can do the work."

In addition to PeopleShores and Automation Anywhere, Clarksdale has attracted Image Industries, a Chicago steel manufacturing business that moved its entire company to the Delta. The company will be hiring at least 50 employees. According to Blake Hobson, co-owner of Image Industries, "One of the biggest things that had to do with it was the people. We have never met more warm, welcoming people in all of our lives and that was a significant deciding factor for us."

Saf-T-Cart - a homegrown industry - is finalizing a $1.5 million expansion at the plant that manufacturers steel carts and welding storage products. The expansion is bringing 25 new jobs.

MAP of Easton Inc. expanded their Clarksdale location in 2018, adding approximately 40 new jobs to the 51 they previously employed. MAP of Easton Inc. manufactures products including automotive, architectural and acousta-art.

"We, obviously, like Clarksdale," said John D'Amico, president of MAP of Easton. "We want to stay in Clarksdale and we want to use the Clarksdale people as much as possible."

Not long ago, a flourishing partnership between Silicon Valley and the Mississippi Delta might have seemed unlikely. But in this new day, as workers like Spencer realize their potential, the value of one good job appears limitless in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Optimizing fulfillment from facility design down to the everyday operation: Syncontext is transforming the fulfillment and distribution world with innovative optimization technology

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Syncontext Supply Chain, an international supply chain technology firm based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, today announced the release of its new and innovative end-to-end fulfillment optimization system, SKUstream™, along with unveiling a fresh, new corporate identity.

Combining five solutions in one, SKUstream™ uses its robust data-driven requirement planning engine to optimize fulfillment centers from logistics resource planning, distribution center design and implementation, to daily slotting of items.

As with all Syncontext applications, SKUstream™ is cloud-based, allowing it to easily and consistently leverage operational data from an organization's existing management systems.

With an emphasis on end-to-end fulfillment optimization, SKUstream™ integrates key continuous improvement principles with state-of-the-art algorithms to isolate and eliminate sources of unnecessary waste in fulfillment operations.

"When we talk about waste, we're talking about every key area of waste in the average distribution center," said Robbie Cluett, Director of Business Development & Customer Success. "Movement, space, product damage, time are all examples of the waste that SKUstream will detect and minimize. Ultimately, improving profitability."

With decades of supply chain operational and consulting experience among Syncontext's leadership team, not just on the conceptual and analytical side, but also in implementing the concepts and strategies themselves, SKUstream™ was developed with first-hand knowledge of the challenges being faced daily by supply chain executives.

"Supply Chain Executives are recognizing a more holistic approach to optimization and continuous improvement is necessary. You cannot just look at one or two parts of the operation anymore. There are trade-offs everywhere," said Hector Orozco, President & CEO.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, which challenged even the most resilient supply chains, Syncontext gained industry recognition from leaders moving towards end-to-end optimization.

With the worst hopefully behind us, and with supply chains normalizing once again, Syncontext sees end-to-end fulfillment optimization as an essential part of every supply chain executive's tool kit.

South Bay Comes Together to Show Support for the Local Healthcare Community on Valentine’s Day

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. -- While everyone continues to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers continue to bear the brunt of it, local businesses are struggling, and people are unsure of how to help. As founder of the popular South Bay Mommies & Daddies, a Los Angeles area community platform for parents and family-friendly local businesses, Laura Stotland was inspired to launch Project South Bay Heroes to help direct well wishes into action in the South Bay community.

In partnership with Tower 60 Foundation, Fueling the Fearless, South Bay Credit Union and OneNinth Media, Project South Bay Heroes is a fundraising program that gives community members a chance to show their appreciation for the healthcare community while also supporting struggling local restaurants. In just a few months, the program has already raised over $15,000, supported 12 South Bay restaurants by sourcing 950 meals for South Bay hospital workers (including Ragin' Cajun, Sacks on the Beach, Bettolino Kitchen,Chicken Dijon, and more), and is racking up massive views and shares as word spreads.

For Valentine's Day, the program funded 500 meals -- over $5k worth of meals -- to local hospitals to remind staff their community is rallying around them: Torrance Memorial Medical Center, and Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers - Torrance and San Pedro. Additionally, the Valentine's Day Kindness Project, mounted online, collected over 1,000 handmade cards from South Bay families for local hospital patients and healthcare workers. While local non-profit, Mychal's Learning place is donating over 400 Valentine's Day cookies for Frontline Healthcare Workers.

"We are so grateful to South Bay Mommies and Daddies for putting together so many beautiful Valentine's Day cards for both our patients and our employees. These cards really put smiles on everyone's face during this difficult time," said Andrew Werts Director, Communications, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers, Torrance and San Pedro.

After polling the healthcare community and other group members about how to support them during this especially difficult time, Stotland conceived Project South Bay Heroes with multiple, simple ways for people and businesses to show their support:

OUTREACH: Spread key messages that our front-line heroes desperately need us to hear and pledge to follow them through a professionally produced video made with clips from local families: stay home, wear masks, keep 6 feet apart, and be kind.

SHOW SUPPORT: Support local first-responders and other struggling businesses in the community by making a tax deductible donation to provide meals from local eateries to those hard-working and hard- pressed heroes on the front lines at various South Bay hospitals: $10 provides one meal, $100 provides meals for 10 essential workers, and $1,000 allows the program to feed the entire staff on duty.

HELP LOCAL RESTAURANTS: Spread the word and tell interested South Bay restaurants to complete an application online to be considered for the program. If accepted, the local restaurant will be notified to schedule a community-sponsored meal for healthcare workers.

The program has already been well received with families, local businesses and restaurants pledging their support.

"When I started talking to people, I heard from so many in our community that wanted to help, and learned that our medical professionals really wanted us to hear their plea to keep everyone safe and healthy," shared Stotland.

"In a time where we're all feeling so helpless, it's been amazing to see our community come together in this way. While we're thrilled to join others in the community in fundraising to provide meals to our local heroes and support local businesses, we're equally proud that we can amplify their wishes through our video, and we hope people will join us in taking the pledge and sharing the video."

"We are grateful to our strong team of partners and sponsors who are making this project possible," said Stotland. "Our goal now is to rack up the biggest restaurant bill the South Bay has ever seen!"

Visit http://www.southbaymommiesanddaddies.com/project-south-bay-heroes to learn more about the program, make a donation, become a sponsor, watch and share the video, and download a printable sign to color and put in your window to show your support! A contribution of just $10 helps to provide one meal to a front-line hero, $100 helps to feed 10 essential workers, and $1,000 helps to feed the entire staff on duty.

"We are grateful for whatever people can do to help us show our appreciation for those who can't stay home," Stotland said. "The South Bay Community is truly in this together."

About South Bay Mommies & Daddies

Inspired by her local community, founder Laura Stotland launched South Bay Mommies & Daddies as a resource for local parents to provide information and tips for raising families in the South Bay. South Bay Mommies & Daddies is now a popular community platform for parents and family-friendly local businesses that showcases information on Local Events, Community News, Opportunities to Give Back, and so much more.
