BETHESDA, Md. – Oct. 16 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — 2006: The Metro, designed by SK&I Architectural Design Group (www.skiarch.com), has been named the recipient of two awards this fall: the Builder’s Choice Award of Merit and the AIA/DC Chapter Award of Merit.

BUILDER magazine has awarded the Builder’s Choice Award – its most prestigious – for 26 years, and Metro was one of nearly 400 entries in this year’s competition. Metro won in the Attached & Multifamily Homes category and was judged on its innovation in architecture, floor plan efficiency, creative use of materials, and interior design.

The juried AIA/DC Chapter Award – sponsored by the Washington D.C. Chapter of the American Institute of Architects – recognizes excellence in architecture in the metropolitan region, and received over 100 submissions from local architects.

“We are thrilled that Metro continues to be recognized by our peers,” said SK&I President Sami Kirkdil, AIA. “The Metro’s modern yet contextual architecture is emblematic of how we respond to design challenges.” The Metro also won an AIA-Washingtonian Award this year.

The Metro is located on Church Street in Washington, DC’s revitalized 14th Street corridor, formerly the automotive show-room district. It is distinguished by a hybrid design consisting of three separate industrial brick façade sections facing the street and a contemporary, sawtooth-patterned facade of floor-to-ceiling glass and steel at the building’s rear.

The BUILDER and AIA/DC juries praised The Metro for its ability to fit into its neighborhood context of early-20th century industrial structures and achieve its intention of appearing as separate structures built over a period of time, as well as its plan efficiency. The building contains 53 condominiums on a 1/5-acre lot.
