VINELAND, N.J., Oct. 26 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — While others, including the Federal Government, are talking about the need for a national treatment requirement for solid wood packaging, PALNET has sprung into action. As the only pallet company with the national capacity to handle large scale ISPM-15 heat treatment, PALNET has seen the coming of this important international safety measure and moved aggressively to be ready for its implementation.
PALNET, as well as the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association, have been seeking the implementation of a national rule requiring all wooden packaging to be treated according to ISPM-15, the international standard for wood packaging materials for many years.
These rules would ensure that all precautions are taken to prevent the possible transport of invasive species from one location to another. In the last five years, more than 140 nations have adopted the ISPM-15 standard and it has proven to be 99.9 percent effective.
According to Michael Smith, C.O.O. of PALNET, a national supplier of pallets, shipping materials and logistics management, “We have been pushing for a national standard so that each state’s requirements match up. We want the greatest degree of protection for our forests, our environment and our supply chain.”
Smith is dedicated to protecting the environment and he is a strong supporter of sustainable foresting with good reason. PALNET wooden pallets are made from the excess trim of the lumbering process. A method that takes what would be landfill bound and repurposes it into eco-friendly, fully recyclable wooden pallets.
While he and others in the industry understand that the greatest problem is with the transportation of firewood, Smith believes in leadership in the area of best practices for wooden products and the pallet industry. That’s why PALNET has been so involved in the development of sound, reliable and easily implementable solutions.
Some other big players in the pallet industry have been slow to support these measures. Smith has planned for and is fully prepared to take on this challenge. It’s clear where Smith stands on these issues as he went on to say, “Dragging your heels on this one is driven by profit concerns, not ecological concerns. It’s important that we always do what’s right, and do it right away.”
