Shipping Batteries, Paints, or Other Hazmats? Lion Technology Teaches Rules for Shipping Hazmats by Ground, Air, or Ocean

Author: Lion Technology Inc
Dateline: Las Vegas, Nevada (LAS VEGAS, Nev.)  | Tue, 17 Aug 2010

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Transportation have stepped up enforcement to reduce undeclared and illegal hazmat shipments via airline, truck, rail, and ship. Undeclared shipments of hazardous materials are predominately aerosols and flammable liquids, as well as batteries, fireworks, dry ice, perfume products, and cigarette lighters.”

A R T I C L E:

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) have stepped up enforcement to reduce undeclared and illegal hazmat shipments via airline, truck, rail, and ship. Undeclared shipments of hazardous materials are predominately aerosols and flammable liquids (e.g., paint and paint-related materials), as well as batteries, fireworks, dry ice, perfume products, and cigarette lighters.

Before a hazardous material is transported in commerce, it must be properly classified, described, packaged, marked, and labeled as prescribed by the DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR). The DOT also mandates that all hazmat employees who "directly affect the safety of hazardous materials transportation" be trained and tested on these same regulations. Hazmat employees must have additional training on the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and IMDG Code if shipping by air or ocean.

To help the regulated community understand the rules for multimodal hazmat shipping, Lion Technology, the nation's leader in regulatory compliance training, is presenting a how-to training series on the DOT, IATA, and IMDG regulations. Training on all three shipping modes will be held in San Diego, CA on September 27-30; Seattle, WA on September 28-October 1; and San Francisco, CA on October 4-7. Training on the DOT and IATA rules will be held in Denver, CO on October 13-15. Training on the DOT rules (ground only) will be held in Phoenix, AZ on October 18-19 and Las Vegas, NV on October 21-22, 2010.

The fee for the two-day DOT workshop is $695 per person. Each additional day (IATA or IMDG) is $495 per person. Group pricing is available. Registration includes course reference materials, networking luncheon, certificate of achievement, and one year of follow-up support. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., and the workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is highly recommended. To register, call (888) 546-6511 or visit us online at www.Lion.com/HazmatShippers .

The workshops feature in-depth discussions of the DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR) and the IATA and IMDG Dangerous Goods Regulations, with an emphasis on the differences between the regulations and the critical components of hazmat shipping, including classification, shipping papers, package selection, package marking and labeling, and record keeping.

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “CHICAGO, Ill. -- Fines and penalties are on the rise for Illinois facilities that fail to comply with Federal and State hazardous waste rules. A R T I C L E:

Fines and penalties are on the rise for facilities that fail to comply with Federal and State hazardous waste rules. Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 cited an Illinois recycling facility for the improper management of hazardous waste and proposed a penalty for non-compliance with the EPA Hazardous Waste Regulations in excess of $700,000.

Lion Technology Director of Corporate Training, Scott Dunsmore, a national expert on hazardous waste management, stresses that proper hazardous waste handling, management, and disposal is critical, especially in light of rising enforcement, which is now $37,500 per day/per violation. "With a slow economy and budget tightening, the reflex is to go towards shorter and inexpensive training options. However, with enforcement initiatives on the increase, shortchanging your training puts you at risk of costing you more in the long run."

Lion Technology Inc., a nationally recognized regulatory compliance training firm, will present its two-day Hazardous/Toxic Waste Management Workshop regionally throughout September. The course is designed for compliance professionals who must be trained annually under the RCRA hazardous waste regulations. Workshops will be held in Minneapolis, MN on September 27-28; Cedar Rapids, IA on September 30-October 1; St. Louis, MO on October 4-5; Chicago, IL on October 7-8; Louisville, KY on October 18-19; Cincinnati, OH on October 21-22; Indianapolis, IN on October 25-26; Milwaukee, WI on October 28-29; Detroit, MI on November 4-5; Cleveland, OH on November 8-9; and Pittsburgh, PA on November 11-12, 2010.

The workshop provides hands-on application of the Federal Hazardous Waste Regulations (40 CFR 206-279). Students learn how to identify regulated waste, properly handle and store waste on site, prepare waste for off-site shipping, protect their site in the event of an emergency, keep records, and prepare their site for new regulatory changes.

Tuition is $795 per person, with group discounts available. Registration includes course reference materials, networking luncheon, certificate of achievement, and one year of follow-up support. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., and the workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is highly recommended. Easy to Build, Quick to Deploy, Mashups Apps to Generate More than $100 Billion for Telcos Over the Next Five Years, Says Insight Research Corp.

Author: Insight Research Corporation
Dateline: Boonton, New Jersey (BOONTON, N.J.)  | Tue, 17 Aug 2010

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “BOONTON, N.J. -- In 2010, telecommunications carriers worldwide are expected to generate just over $1 billion in new revenue by helping build and deploy mashups, according to a new market research study from The Insight Research Corporation. 'Mashups are all about reusability, which is a magical word in any business context,' says Robert Rosenberg.”

A R T I C L E:

In 2010, telecommunications carriers worldwide are expected to generate just over $1 billion in new revenue by helping build and deploy mashups, according to a new market research study from The Insight Research Corporation. The term "mashup" (first used to describe the smart mixing of disparate musical tracks to create a new entertainment experience) in telecommunications has come to mean quickly integrating connectivity, data, applications, and decision-making components in order to produce a completely new recipe for a service or application that is more attractive than the sum of its parts.

Insight Research's market analysis study, "Mashups in Telecommunications, 2010-2015" found that the ability to quickly combine disparate, existing applications or services in a way that will yield a composite, coherent solution to a need or demand in an agile and economical way will produce revenue growth for carriers in excess of 100 percent per year over the next five years. Such spectacular revenue growth is a result of the industry's greater openness and standards that, for the first time, make it possible to easily and quickly join existing resources to construct mashup-type applications.

"Mashups are all about reusability, which is a magical word in any business context," says Robert Rosenberg, Insight Research. "Mashups represent the democratization of application development process. AT&T, BT, Vodaphone and IBM are already on board, while Google and Microsoft are taking a somewhat different tack," Rosenberg concluded.

"Mashups in Telecommunications, 2010-2015" segments the markets into data transfer and the access royalty revenue opportunities for wireline versus wireless carriers and further disaggregates the opportunities by various carrier-enabled applications components including social networking; location based services; presence services; VoIP; messaging; Software as a Service, conferencing; and streaming.

An excerpt of the "Mashups in Telecommunications, 2010-2015" market research report, table of contents, and ordering information are online at http://www.insight-corp.com/reports/mashup10.asp .

This 168-page report is available immediately for $3,995 (hard copy). Electronic (PDF) reports can be ordered online. Visit our Web site, or call 973/541-9600 for details.

ASE Optics Adds Key Staff Member

Author: ASE Optics
Dateline: Rochester, New York (ROCHESTER, N.Y.)  | Wed, 04 Aug 2010

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- With the addition of Dr. Wade Cook, ASE Optics significantly expands its capabilities in holography, remote sensing, LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and laser vibrometry. ASE Optics provides contract optical engineering and custom lens assembly manufacturing for companies worldwide.”

A R T I C L E:

With the addition of Dr. Wade Cook, ASE Optics significantly expands its capabilities in holography, remote sensing, LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and laser vibrometry. ASE Optics provides contract optical engineering and custom lens assembly manufacturing for companies worldwide.

ASE President Christopher Cotton notes: "Nearly thirty percent of our business involves high tech SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) projects. These exciting challenges regularly create opportunities for pilot and ongoing production programs, often in complex partner relationships. With Wade's formal systems engineering background and his outstanding technical expertise, he is a great match for managing customer relationships like these."

Wade Cook adds, "ASE's hallmark is bringing diversity of thought to solving optical design challenges in innovative ways. Coming to ASE lets me bring my experience to bear in a broad range of applications, working with a team I know well."

Cook's military background and experience meshes closely with the emerging needs of ASE's customers. Recent project work includes remote sensing, critical to UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) applications.

New photopolymer materials are expanding the possibilities for using holography to create ever-lighter and smaller integrated optical systems. Cook has experience in designing and making holograms for pictorial and metrology applications. ASE can now design, spec and build hologram systems, or deliver finished holograms.

Cook's expertise in laser vibrometry enhances ASE's extensive ability in custom metrology solutions. Featured in a recent SBIR as a means of stand-off explosive detection, laser vibrometry uses a laser to measure the frequency at which a surface is vibrating. This non-contact testing is ideal for delicate structures and harsh or dangerous environments.

Cook also brings direct LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) expertise, allowing him to design LIDAR systems for 3D mapping and data analysis. Recent work includes a partnership with RIT and MIT Lincoln Labs to accurately simulate airborne LIDAR.

About ASE Optics:

ASE Optics (ASEOptics.com) was founded in 1994 to provide optical engineering support for companies who couldn't find, couldn't afford, or couldn't justify having an optical engineer on staff. ASE Optics "sees beyond the lens," providing elegant optical designs that work within the system, maintaining integrity and seamlessly integrating for optimal system performance. Their optical engineers' expertise is both deep and broad, crossing industries from security and defense to consumer electronics to medical devices.
