CAMBRIDGE, Mass. /Neotrope News Network/ -- A one-page online checklist that can be completed in a few minutes accurately indicates whether a patient may have any of four major mental health conditions, according to a study to be published in the March/April 2010 issue of the Annals of Family Medicine. The free, Web-based screener, developed by M-3 Information, is available on-line at www.mymoodmonitor.com .

For the millions of Americans grappling with depression, anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or bipolar disorder, the documented accuracy of the M-3 Checklist is a major breakthrough for mental health care, according to the researchers from the University of North Carolina, Weill Medical College at Cornell University and the Boston University School of Medicine who conducted the study.

"The M-3 offers a quick and accurate way to determine whether a person might have one of these four common psychiatric conditions. It also provides a clear and concise printed report detailing the results of the test that can be shared and discussed with a person's family doctor or a mental health professional," says Larry Culpepper, MD, MPH, Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, and a co-author of the study.

"For the one-in-five Americans who have one of these diagnosable and treatable illnesses, the M-3 screener represents a major breakthrough by offering an easy-to-fill-out questionnaire that allows people to identify what's wrong with them, so they can get the help they need," says the article's lead author, Bradley N. Gaynes, MD, MPH, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina.

The M-3 also screens for suicide risk and substance abuse, warning users who might be at risk for these conditions and urging that follow-up steps be taken. (Photos and graphics of the M-3 Checklist are available at www.tinyurl.com/M-3photos [redirects to Flickr].)

The M-3 Checklist is private, simple to use, and does not require any personal information to be divulged. It can be taken online, and soon will be available on mobile devices. Users can monitor their progress by retaking the test at regular intervals on Microsoft's HealthVault, which ensures the results remain private but allows the information to be shared with clinicians.

The M-3, which was independently funded and developed, is particularly timely: hospitals, doctors, and patients are preparing to use electronic medical record (EMR) systems to document all health care interactions and the M-3 is the first validated application to use EMR technology developed for mental health care. The recent Obama Administration's economic stimulus package includes more than $20 billion in funding for the development of a nationwide electronic health record system over the next four years.

According to the most recent estimate from the National Institute of Mental Health, the annual economic impact of untreated mood disorders is more than $70 billion. For sufferers of depression and anxiety, lack of treatment can lead to reduced productivity or job loss, strain on personal relationships, and in some cases, can trigger drug use and/or suicide. Unlike other health issues, the very onset of depression and anxiety symptoms can hinder efforts by the person affected to seek help, and many sufferers are held back by shame or lethargy.

According to the newly released study: "The M-3 is a valid, efficient, and feasible tool for screening common psychiatric illnesses, including bipolar disorder and PTSD, in primary care. Its diagnostic accuracy equals that of presently used single-disorder screens but with the additional benefit of being combined into a one-page tool. The M-3 potentially can reduce missed psychiatric diagnoses and facilitate proper treatment of identified cases."

The Annals study is based on the responses of 647 patients at the University of North Carolina Family Practice Medicine Clinic. Each subject filled out the 27-question M-3 checklist and then participated in a follow-up interview with a clinician who had no access to the results of the screener. The M-3 was effective in screening for any mood or anxiety disorder 83 percent of the time and for a specific disorder in 76 percent of cases.

The study was conducted by Bradley N. Gaynes, MD, MPH, Joanne De-Veaugh-Geiss, MA, LPA, and Hongbin Gu, PhD, all of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry; David R. Rubinow, professor and chairman of psychiatry, University of North Carolina School of Medicine; Sam Weir, MD, University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine; Cora MacPherson, PhD, Social & Scientific Systems; Herbert C. Schulberg, PhD, M.S.Hyg., Weill Cornell Medical College; and Larry Culpepper, MD, MPH, professor and chairman of family medicine, Boston University and chief of family medicine, Boston Medical Center.

About M-3:

Sixty million Americans have a diagnosable mood or anxiety disorder every year while fewer than half of these individuals receive help for their condition. One reason for this shortfall has been the absence of a single, simple, and reliable screen that can assess the presence of the mood and anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder and PTSD. The M-3 screener is a symptom checklist that a patient can use to rate his or her mood in one easy review. It is comprised of a short series of questions that touch on indicators of mental health and wellness. The M-3 was developed by a team of mental health, strategic communications, and information management experts, including Robert M. Post, MD, head of the Bipolar Collaborative Network; Bernard M. Snyder, MD, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University and a cognitive behavioral therapist; Michael L. Byer, director of M-3 Information; Larry Culpepper, MD, family practice program at Boston University; Gerald Hurowitz, MD, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and a clinical psychopharmacologist; and Bill Lichtenstein, president of Lichtenstein Creative Media. The free and private screener is available at www.mymoodmonitor.com and is independently funded by M-3 Information without pharmaceutical industry support.

Battlefield and hospital tested medical product used to clot blood, stop bleeding.

BUFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 15 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- U.K. Medical products manufacturer MedTrade Products Ltd. has selected CityMade Logistics to manage the sales, marketing and distribution of Celox™ blood clotting products throughout the U.S. and Canada. The 10-year-old Buffalo-based company will provide these services through CityMade Logistics - CityMade's eCommerce, Fulfillment and Logistics division.

Celox over-the-counter blood clotting products stop all types of bleeding - from mild to moderate to even potentially life threatening arterial bleeding - fast. Battlefield and hospital tested, Celox works independently of the body's normal clotting process and its clotting ability has been proven to work even in the presence of common anti-coagulant blood thinning medications like Coumadin®, Warfarin and Heparin. Celox is also safe for children.

"There are an estimated 40 million people in the U.S. alone who take anti-coagulant blood thinning medications and are at risk if they suffer even a small cut or scrape," said Celox North America CEO, Madonna Spitler. "We believe Celox will potentially have a significant, positive impact on them and anyone who suffers a mild to severe bleeding wound or injury."

"When Celox comes into contact with blood, it quickly swells, gels and binds to form a gel-like clot that stops bleeding fast," Spitler explained. "And Celox products are easy to use - just open the package, pour or pack, and apply pressure. It's that simple. Celox is a truly remarkable product."

Celox is available in three formulas: Celox granular can be poured directly on a wound or injury and when pressure is applied, bleeding stops typically within 30 seconds. Celox Gauze products - Gauze Roll and Gauze Pads - are imbedded with full-strength Celox granules and can be placed atop or directly inside a bleeding wound or injury. Celox Nosebleed formula is a small, specially shaped Celox-imbedded pad that can be easily inserted into the nostril to stop nosebleeds. The products retail for between $13 to under $30.

"Because Celox products are lightweight and compact, they're easy to carry in your car, purse, briefcase, gym bag, backpack, tool box, tackle box, first aid kit - just about anywhere," Spitler said. "Celox is great to have on hand in the kitchen, if you work with mechanics' or carpentry tools, if your family plays sports, or if you go hunting, hiking, fishing, boating or camping. Sometimes when you're injured, you could be miles from help. Whether you're at home, in the middle of the woods or the middle of the lake, when you're waiting for help for yourself, a friend or a child, minutes can seem like hours. Celox can help."

For more information or to place an order, visit www.celoxsales.com or call 1.866.99CELOX.

CityMade Logistics' parent company, CityMade, Inc., filed the Celox dba and also recently announced a Direct Public Offering (DPO) of 800,000 shares of common stock to investors. The DPO is registered with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission and the State Attorney General's Office. More information is available at www.citymade.com/dpo.

A R T I C L E:

BURTONSVILLE, Md., Feb. 13 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- A new study finds that Lifeclinic automated self-testing health stations in the workplace are a valuable tool for employees and employers in the management of hypertension and obesity. Results of the study appear in the January 2009 issue of Postgraduate Medicine, a peer-reviewed medical journal.

The study analyzed blood pressure and weight data collected over an 18 month period from 18 Lifeclinic LC500 health stations installed in 13 workplace locations of a company with approximately 20,000 employees.

The study found that:
* Over 21 percent of the employees voluntarily used worksite health stations to measure their blood pressure or weight.

* Worksite health stations identified 27 percent as hypertensive, 40 percent as pre-hypertensive, 38 percent as obese, and 35 percent as overweight.

* Approximately half of the employees with hypertension and 10 percent of the employees with obesity successfully reduced their health risks.

"Worksite health stations provide cost-effective tools to fight the hypertension and obesity epidemic, which hurts employee health and productivity," said John T. Kelly, MD, Lifeclinic's Chief Medical Officer. "Worksite health stations increase employee awareness of health risks, encourage behavior change to reduce health risks, support effective health promotion programs, improve employee health, and enhance productivity."

More than one thousand employers have installed several thousand Lifeclinic self-testing health stations at worksites. The Lifeclinic LC500 provides automated measurements of blood pressure, pulse, weight, body fat, and BMI. Peripheral input ports interface with various personal health devices, including pedometers. The LC500 is Internet-ready for secure, HIPAA-compliant, connection to health and wellness tools. Additional information about the Lifeclinic LC500 is available at www.lifeclinic.com.

"Worksite health stations integrate health promotion into the worksite and its culture, reach employees who normally would not be engaged in health improvement, and support health and productivity improvement," said Dr. Kelly.

Digital Hearing Aids Correct Hearing Loss and Prevent Job Loss

Author: HearPod, Inc.
Dateline: Wed, 15 Oct 2008

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “CORNELIUS, N.C., Oct. 15 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- With the uncertainty in today's economy, job loss is a valid concern for everyone. A R T I C L E:

CORNELIUS, N.C., Oct. 15 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- With the uncertainty in today's economy, job loss is a valid concern for everyone. And, for anyone struggling with a hearing impairment, the purchase of a modern digital hearing aid could preserve their career as well as their ability to hear; HearPod's hearing aids can help.

Randy Wohlers BC HISIn times like these, with so much talk around the stock market plummeting, government bailout plans and the possibility of a new economic depression, employers are faced with tough decisions when forced to cut costs.

And, for anyone who has not yet reached retirement age and is living with an untreated hearing loss, there's a real possibility that their employment is at stake.

Randy Wohlers, founder of MyHearPod.com says, "With many employers evaluating their staff members to consider who will stay and who will go in a round of job cuts, anyone with an untreated hearing loss could be among the first to be let go. Digital hearing aids can be a real job saver."

People who attempt to hide hearing loss may not be doing a very good job. More than likely, their inability to hear is evident in interactions with customers, co-workers and overall job performance.

So, what's the alternative? When faced with possible job loss, the answer should be simple - get a hearing test and consequently, a hearing aid to save a job.

A hearing impairment can affect every area of a person's life. One of the biggest problems faced by people who cannot hear, but do not purchase hearing aids, is the ability to make good decisions. This can also lead to rough patches on the work front.

People dealing with hearing loss automatically say "yes" if they did not hear a question. This is to spare themselves the embarrassment of asking for a question to be repeated over and over. This can be disastrous in business if constantly agreeing to do one thing, but actually asked to do another.

Nobody wants to be faced with losing their job, but right now that's going to be the case for thousands of people. So, why not do everything possible to prevent that from happening and research what it takes to get a digital hearing aid.

About HearPod, Inc. - Hearing Aids

HearPod.com is the successful culmination of 30 years of solving the needs of hearing-impaired people. HearPod hearing aids are 100 percent digital, full-featured and have some of the most advanced noise canceling and sound amplification computer chips available. Their innovative design also reduces sound feedback inside the ear, making HearPod hearing aids among the most comfortable to wear.

To get hearing tested and to correct hearing-loss problems, visit www.myhearpod.com - or call Randy Wohlers at: 1-800-851-2414 for more information about digital hearing aids and overall problems associated with hearing loss and how to correct it.
