GridBright partners with WindSim Power Inc. to implement next-generation Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) solutions at Avangrid, demonstrating approaches for FERC 881 compliance

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Every US transmission owner is looking for the best approach to implement FERC 881 by July 2025. GridBright, WindSim Power, and Avangrid are partnering to implement WindSim Power's non-contact, advanced transmission line monitoring system to increase resiliency and reliability, reduce grid congestion, and provide real-time data that could aid in more renewable energy resources into the New York State electrical grid and validate it as an option for FERC 881 compliance.

The project, funded by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Future Grid Program, implements WindSim's Power Line Solution, which was co-developed with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) with support from the U.S. Department of Energy Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO).

The project will span thirty-six months, Deployment of weather telemetry will be completed by project partner Vaisala.

GridBright® upgrades Oracle Network Management System (NMS) at Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative (MCEC), underscoring the repeatability of GridBright’s NMS Configuration for Cooperatives

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- MCEC, an early adopter of Oracle Network Management Systems (NMS), undertook a major NMS upgrade and re-integration with core operational systems with both standard configuration and custom integration modifications to enable the efficient operations of an ever-increasing complex electric grid. GridBright, in its upgrade of Oracle NMS at MCEC, further leveraged its proven NMS Configuration for COOPS that incorporates industry best practices from over thirty utility implementations.

As a result, GridBright implemented Oracle NMS and associated integrations at MCEC in about nine months utilizing the GridBright COOP configuration.

"The GridBright team has done an excellent job. The Oracle NMS Coop configuration designed and implemented by GridBright is working great for our operations group," said MCEC project manager Gail Campbell.

"We expect utilities focus on network management systems upgrades and new implementations to increase because of the need to integrate renewables and manage increasingly costly grid threats such as cyber-attacks and natural disasters. Accelerating this will be the substantial amount of funding available from Government sources as the Nation significantly increases investment in the electric grid for sustainability and resilience," said GridBright Executive Vice President Tom Servas.

In 2022 there have been 15 weather/climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each to affect the United States, according to NOAA. Additionally, the US government plans to invest over $16 billion in energy infrastructure to build a 21st-century electrical grid in the coming years.

GridBright® completes Oracle Utilities Network Management System (NMS) implementation at Colquitt EMC, extending the reach of full-featured utility network management

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- State-of-the-art electric utility network management systems are no longer only possible in the realm of large utility organizations. The needed sophistication to manage the modern grid does not recognize any utility network as too small to pose operating challenges. But the cost of these systems can be too high for smaller utilities to absorb. GridBright, in its implementation of Oracle Utilities Network Management System at Colquitt, has changed the game for smaller but not less essential utility operations.

"In the past, many COOP utilities could not afford the cost of implementing a full feature NMS. We changed that by developing a template to implement NMS/OMS at smaller utilities cutting implementation costs significantly," said Tom Servas, executive vice president at GridBright.

At Colquitt, GridBright implemented Oracle Network Management System over 12 months. The implementation spanned the project's entire lifecycle from "March 2021" to "February 2022" and included the integration of outage map capabilities from DataCapable.

This advance in the viability of more cost-efficient NMS implementation is timely as the US Government begins the implementation of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). In addition, there is a specific focus on technology enhancing grid flexibility and the cyber threats presented to rural and municipal utilities, specifically in that legislation.

"With Colquitt's project as a blueprint, COOPs can now implement Oracle's Network Management System at a price that works for them," said Brad Williams, vice president of Industry Strategy at Oracle Energy and Water. "Now, COOPs can benefit from a full-featured solution that enables them to manage every piece for their operation - from distribution to customer-owned grid devices, to improve reliability and customer service even in the most extreme circumstances."

With more than 30% of Americans being served by public power utilities or MUNIs, it is expected that utilities like Colquitt will require NMS offerings like Oracle's Network Management System to support achieving the national energy goals of the IIJA. With GridBright's approach, the cost is decreasing as a barrier to these utilities' ability to implement network management systems that meet their challenges.

GRIDEON is an open-source-based suite of easy-to-use cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) applications, technologies, enablement and support services, and standards that provide the full set of capabilities required to instantiate any type of secure grid data exchange.

GRIDEON efficiently ensures secure and compliant grid data exchange among all-electric ecosystem participants encompassing the entire electric value chain from generation to consumers (prosumers) spanning business and real-time operations.

It accommodates the creation of multiple types of exchanges necessitated by the utility industry's grid data sharing applications such as collaboration, real-time system integration, publication-subscriber, one-to-many, among just a few.

Secure Grid Collaboration is the second service established on GRIDEON. The first is the BetterGrids Grid Model Repository that is presently used in 45 countries. BetterGrids.org is a free library of curated, non-sensitive grid models shared voluntarily by grid researchers. It includes synthetic and anonymized grid models and uses a rigorous curation process to ensure data quality. AI tools for semantic and natural language searching allow researchers to find their desired test data easily.

Secure Grid Collaboration extends the GRIDEON service reach. It establishes core grid data exchange standards that drive cost efficiency and management efficacy for foundational exchange artifacts such as nondisclosure agreements (NDA) between counterparties. It provides the foundation for future process management and real time services in emergency management and DER integration and beyond.

It also implements the enabling processes for secure grid data exchanges such as participant registration and advanced encryption key services that support exchange operations, security, and compliance.

Girding these key elements is a support organization providing 24 x 7 help, operations, and technical support functions required by the operational nature of many of the exchanges a typical utility will implement.
