MAGLITE® and American Paramedic Association Partner with Pedestrian Safety Institute, Promoting Traffic and Pedestrian Safety During July: The Deadliest Month of The Year

ONTARIO, Calif. -- The Maglite brand partners up with the American Paramedics Association (APA) and the Pedestrian Safety Institute (PSI) to support traffic and pedestrian safety during the deadliest month of the year. According to the PSI, July maintains the highest rate of traffic related fatalities specifically with those of pedestrians. The days surrounding July 4th are particularly dangerous.

"Paramedics are those that treat the injured and see the deaths up close from traffic fatalities and want to urge people to be more cautious so that we can respond to less of these tragedies," said Andrew Stephen, Executive Director of APA. "Any time a paramedic is out of their vehicle, the goal is to be visible. Why should it be any different for pedestrians?"

Darkness and low-visibility play a significant role in pedestrian deaths. In fact, more than 70% of fatalities happen at dawn, dusk or night. Maglite and the American Paramedic Association are on a mission to illuminate the dangers of driving in low-visibility conditions to reduce deaths and injuries. In order to raise awareness, they are distributing press materials and alerting the media about the dangers pedestrians will face in the coming months, while also promoting National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month.

National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month was created by the Pedestrian Safety Institute with the goal of educating and urging drivers to use caution while driving during this time of year.

"There are simple ways to reduce the number of deaths due to pedestrian traffic accidents - carry a bright flashlight, wear reflective clothing and be cautious, especially around fast-moving traffic," said Tony Maglica, founder and CEO of Mag Instrument, Inc., manufacturer of the Maglite® Flashlight.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), more than 6,700 pedestrians died in vehicle related accidents in 2020, up from 6,412 the year before. GHSA projected that pedestrian fatality rate increased nearly 20% as deaths climbed sharply despite people driving less during the pandemic. Preliminary data from 2021 indicates yet another increase in pedestrian deaths.

The Deadliest Days of the Year are Upon Us: 4th of July Holiday Sees Dramatic Spike in Traffic-Related Deaths Every Year

ONTARIO, Calif. -- The deadliest days of the year for traffic related accidents are those surrounding the 4th of July holiday. Every year there is a dramatic spike in pedestrian related deaths and injuries during that time. According to AutoInsurance.Org, Independence Day averages 450 fatal crashes per year. On average 17 pedestrians are killed every day, with 74% of fatal incidents happening at night according to the Pedestrian Safety Institute. In response MAGLITE® and First Responders Children's Foundation (FRCF) are joining together to promote traffic and pedestrian safety awareness.

Pedestrian fatalities spiked in 2021 even though there was less traffic on the roads due to the pandemic. According to PEW, "Pedestrian fatalities grew in 27 states in the first half of 2020." Also, the Governors Highway Safety Association estimates that overall, "the pedestrian death rate rose 20% during that period. Nearly 3,000 pedestrians were killed, even though there was a 16.5% decrease in traffic."

Darkness and low-visibility play a significant role in pedestrian deaths. In fact, more than 70 percent of fatalities happen at night or at dusk or dawn hours. MAGLITE® and First Responders Children's Foundation are on a mission to illuminate the deadliest days of the year and to highlight the dangers of driving in low-visibility conditions to reduce deaths and injuries.

The Centers for Disease Control offer these tips to be safer as a pedestrian at night:

* Carry a flashlight when walking and wear reflective clothing

* Cross streets at designated crosswalks or intersections

* Walk on sidewalk instead of the road or walk on the shoulder facing traffic if a sidewalk or path is not available.

"Carrying a powerful light source will decrease the chance you are struck by a car and injured or killed this coming weekend and the rest of the year," said Anthony Maglica, Founder and Owner of Mag Instrument Inc. "I wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day!"

Maglite and First Responders Children’s Foundation (FRCF) Partner to Promote Traffic and Pedestrian Safety

ONTARIO, Calif. -- Maglite and First Responders Children's Foundation (FRCF) are joining together to support traffic and pedestrian safety during the deadliest days of the year. According to the Pedestrian Safety Institute, July is the deadliest month of the year for traffic related fatalities including those of pedestrians. The days surrounding July 4th are particularly dangerous.

Maglite and First Responders Children's Foundation will be raising awareness by distributing press materials and alerting the media about the dangers pedestrians will face in the coming months, while also promoting National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month.

National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month was created by the Pedestrian Safety Institute to draw attention to this deadly time of year. Last year we saw one of the largest increases in vehicular fatalities, despite the significant decline in the number of miles Americans were driving as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The goal of this program is to increase awareness and urge people to use caution while driving during this particularly perilous time of year.

"There are simple ways to reduce the senseless number of deaths due to pedestrian traffic accidents and that is to carry a bright flashlight, wear reflective clothing and be cautious, especially around fast-moving traffic," said Tony Maglica, Founder and CEO of Mag Instrument, Inc., manufacturer of the Maglite® Flashlight.

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and MAGLITE Partner with Pedestrian Safety Institute to Promote National Traffic Safety Awareness Month

ONTARIO, Calif. -- The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and Mag Instrument, U.S. Manufacturer of the iconic MAGLITE(R) flashlight, have partnered with the Pedestrian Safety Institute (PSI) to drive awareness of the deadliest days of the year for pedestrian and traffic fatalities in the Month of July.

July has been designated National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month because of the spike in accidents and fatalities during that time of year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration a pedestrian was killed every 88 minutes in 2017, now that number is even higher.

6,283 pedestrians were killed in 2018, an increase of 3.4 percent from the previous year and the highest number in 30 years. A research paper by noted economist and author Jay Prag of the Drucker School finds that pedestrian injuries and deaths from accidents cost the United States economy more than $60 billion in 2018 alone. The vast majority of accidents and the highest percentage of deaths (up to 75% according to some studies) occurred at night with poor visibility and distracted driving being major contributing factors.

"Pedestrian deaths exceed those by drowning and motorcycle accidents; exceed deaths by food borne illness in the US; and exceed deaths by tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough combined. They even exceed the combined deaths in home fires, boating accidents, and commercial airline accidents each year. If pedestrian deaths were a disease, drug companies would be searching for a cure," said study author Jay Prag.

Roadway hazards abound for the first responder. Traffic volume and speed, distracted drivers and the additional distraction caused by a roadway incident leave firefighters and others working the scene highly vulnerable. As of June 8, 2020, 20 first responders have been struck and killed while working vehicle incidents this year. Dozens more have been injured, with an even higher number of near misses predicted to be occurring daily.

"The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation joins with other agencies in calling for all drivers to remain attentive, slow down when approaching an incident on the roadway and safely move over to give first responders the best opportunity to do their work and return home to their families," said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, Executive Director of the NFFF.

"Maglite is committed to safety and security and make our products with those reasons in mind. We urge people to stay safe and be particularly vigilant around this deadly time of year and of course - carry some form of illumination at night," said Tony Maglica, Founder and CEO Mag Instrument, Inc. "Our goal is to reduce fatalities and injuries that occur on our roads and highways in vehicle traffic accidents, especially among pedestrians, who are far likelier to be fatally struck by vehicles at night than in the daytime."

The mission of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum is to honor the fallen, tell the story of American law Enforcement, and make it safer for those who serve. Traffic safety for our officers is closely tied to pedestrian safety, and it is a priority to bring awareness of the topic to the nation. We are honored to be a partner in National Traffic Safety Awareness Month," said Marcia Ferranto, CEO of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

NFFF, NLEOMF, Maglite and PSI will be using various social media and other communication channels to promote National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month in July.

MAGLITE(R) is a founding sponsor of The Pedestrian Safety Institute and sponsored the research by Prag. The full research paper is available at the website: https://www.pedestriansafetyinstitute.com/.
