AOSMI remains open for urgent care, offers telemedicine visits during COVID-19 pandemic

FREEHOLD, N.J. -- Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI) is keeping its practice open and continuing to see patients with urgent and acute injuries, while following CDC recommendations for preventing exposure to the COVID-19 virus.

Additionally, it is offering telemedicine visits for patients, who can conduct the visits through their desktop computers or cellphones.
* The practice has taken the following measures to keep patients, staff and visitors safe:
* All patients are prescreened for COVID-19 symptoms before an appointment is scheduled and before entering the office.
* AOSMI has cancelled all its scheduled elective surgeries and rescheduled them for a later date.
* AOSMI surgeons are still performing emergency procedures and surgeries for patients who require them.
* No visitors are allowed to accompany patients in the office unless required medically or for pediatric patients and in those circumstances, only one visitor will be allowed.
* The practice is requiring social distancing in the office amongst their patients to keep them safe.
* AOSMI physicians and clinical staff are all practicing universal precautions by wearing masks and using gloves to maintain the safety of their staff and patients.
* Each area is cleaned and disinfected after every patient visit.

In efforts to help keep employees on the payroll and limit the number of furloughed employees and layoffs, AOSMI physician partners are foregoing pay, while its entire professional medical staff has taken large reductions to help with the organizational needs.

Dr. Alan Nasar, Orthopedic Surgeon at AOSMI, Speaks on How Technology is Driving Surgery at Freehold Borough High School’s Medical Science Program

FREEHOLD, N.J. -- Dr. Alan Nasar, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI), Freehold and Monroe townships, N.J., recently presented an interactive video program to senior students enrolled in the Medical Science Program at Freehold Borough High School. Dr. Nasar tied together the use of innovation and technology with how both are being used to improve orthopedic surgery and the lives of patients.

Dr. Nasar showed the students surgical videos of knee replacement with custom cutting guides, and cartilage transplantation of the knee. An informative question and answer session followed. This type of interactive presentation allows students to learn about orthopedics in an interesting and engaging format and also provides the opportunity for them to speak with a professional surgeon.

"I wanted to give the students concrete visualization of what they could contribute to society in the medical field," said Dr. Nasar. "I still remember the excitement I felt when I was introduced to biotechnology in engineering school. The first time I sat in on a surgery, I knew I wanted to become an orthopedic surgeon. Now I have an opportunity to blend both surgical procedures and technology for the benefit of my patients in Middlesex and Monmouth Counties."

Dr. Nasar also discussed the topics of healthcare economics and the challenges and rewards of practicing medicine in 2020.

James Matera, Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at CentraState Healthcare System, arranged for Dr. Nasar to speak to the Freehold students. For further information about AOSMI or to have Dr. Nasar speak to your group, contact him at 732-720-2555.
