EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- On October 16, 2022, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Vistamar School hosts its 14th annual Multicultural Student College Fair at Vistamar School, 737 Hawaii Street in El Segundo. Open to all students, this College Admissions Fair is an opportunity for high school students to meet representatives and alumni from a wide range of top colleges, universities, and service academies from across the country. These institutions seek to meet Los Angeles area high school students of all backgrounds.

The list of attending institutions includes some of the nation's most selective colleges. There are also many private liberal arts colleges, public institutions from numerous states across the country, and historically black colleges and universities attending.

Among those represented at the fair this year will be MIT, Northwestern, Dartmouth College, Colgate University, Tufts University, University of Michigan, Washington University at St. Louis, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, USC, Bucknell University, Elon University, DePaul University, American University in Paris, University of Oregon, Agnes Scott College, and many more.

"Vistamar School was founded on a commitment to diversity of thought and culture that encourages authentic exchange of perspectives, mutual respect, and a mature understanding of the world," said Chris Bright, Head of School. "Early on, we realized an opportunity to provide any student in the LA area the chance to meet with a broad range of top college representatives, whether or not they had time and resources to travel widely."

There will also be workshops for students and parents on Financial Aid Basics, offered in English and Spanish, and on the Historically Black College and University Experience.

"In past years, we've had over 700 student and family attendees," according to Gregg Murray, Director of Life Planning at Vistamar School. "College representatives appreciate that they can efficiently meet such a wide variety of strong students."

Vistamar School Opens New Viking Commons

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- As students look for connection after months of pandemic induced isolation, Vistamar School, an independent college preparatory day school serving grades 9-12, announced the official opening of the Viking Commons, a new gathering space and commercial kitchen providing a nutritious lunch to the entire school community every day, at no daily charge.

"Our school is built on community and equity. The Viking Commons provides an important way for everyone in our school community to come together over a great equalizer, food," stated Chris Bright, Vistamar Head of School. "We've removed the stress of having to figure out what to do about lunch every day and instead, provide an array of healthful food options at no added daily charge in a beautiful space to meet."

Living a healthy and balanced life is one of Vistamar's core values, and the Viking Commons supports this value. Healthful, nutritious, and delicious lunches are prepared from scratch daily onsite. The food service partner takes a "wellness" first approach, providing custom menus that are flavorful, provide variety, and also support local and sustainable agricultural practices.

Designing the Viking Commons was a collaborative effort. The design, fundraising and building process incorporated the work of Vistamar's trustees, staff, parents, and the architect, ODAA Architecture. Care was taken to echo the innovative, open space design of the school and reinforce the School's commitment to best practices in education. The Viking Commons is one of the most dramatic building upgrades since the school was founded.

Vistamar School Begins Construction on New Viking Commons

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened many issues of inequity across our region. Vistamar School, an independent college preparatory day school serving grades 9-12, announced construction started this week on the Viking Commons, a new commercial kitchen and gathering space for the school.

The commercial kitchen will provide a nutritious lunch daily for the entire school community, and the innovative communal space will expand ways for Vistamar's students, faculty, and staff to connect. Construction is planned to be completed by August, 2021 for the start of the new school year.

"Our school is built on community and equity. The Viking Commons will provide an important way for everyone in our school community to come together daily over a great equalizer, food," stated Chris Bright, Vistamar Head of School. "We're removing the stress of having to figure out what to do about lunch each day for everyone in the school and instead, providing an array of healthful food options at no added daily charge in a beautiful space to meet."

Design of the Viking Commons has been a collaborative process. Originally envisioned by school leadership working together with the Board of Trustees, the year-long design and fundraising process has incorporated the work of trustees, staff, parents, and the architect, OKB Architecture. The interdisciplinary project team worked diligently using an efficient, cost effective approach to maximize the positive impacts of the project while minimizing funding needed. Care was taken to echo the innovative, open space design of the school.

"As a school committed to best practices in education, our campus design deliberately accommodates and supports the dynamic needs of the community," said Kris Rone, Chair of Vistamar's Board of Trustees and parent of students, classes of '18 and '21. "The Viking Commons will be one of our most dramatic building upgrades since the School was founded."

Vistamar's community is supporting the project enthusiastically and looking forward to the opening when we return to school in August. "The Viking Commons is a natural enhancement to our school, transforming an office area and small commons area into an open-plan, state of the art kitchen and servery and a dynamic and inviting space to gather," noted Chris Bright, "and we're proud to add this powerful enhancement of our school culture and wellness focus."
