The Surround Imaging(tm) Technology Provides Forensic-Quality 2D and True 3D Images and Does Not Require Contact with a Surface

HERNDON, VA — (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — TBS North America, Inc. (TBS), a touchless biometric system provider for high quality enrollment and identification applications, announced today Surround Imaging(tm), the first fingerprint capture technology to reconstruct the 3-dimensional features of the human finger.

Considered a breakthrough in optical fingerprint live-scan technology, patent-pending Surround Imaging advances fingerprint science and the biometric industry by capturing the finger geometry, ridge and valley detail at resolutions up to 1000 dpi.

Dr. Rudolf Hauke, President & CEO of TBS, remarked, “Legacy optical live-scan technology utilizes total frustrated internal reflection to capture fingerprint ridge impressions as they are pressed against a hard imaging surface. This 30-year old technical approach results in distortions of the fingerprint, inconsistent image quality and often misses important areas of the finger. These legacy devices require specially trained and experienced personnel and excessive maintenance and repair. Surround Imaging eliminates many of the problems experienced with legacy live-scan technology by using advanced touchless, multi-camera imaging of the finger surface at high contrast.”

Surround Imaging technology supports the output of 3D fingerprint and other finger surface data. This set of data can be incorporated into automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS) to create more accurate minutiae and pattern matching and more reliable, higher speed database indexing schemes. Surround Imaging outputs 2D rolled-equivalent fingerprint ridge data that is completely compatible with legacy fingerprint databases.

This will result in an upgrade path for government and institutions that want to take advantage of the technology improvements and cost savings, but must remain compatible with their existing systems.

Touchless 3D finger imaging not only brings the biometric industry forward but sets the stage for the future by enabling more advanced, more reliable and completely new methods for liveness detection, fingerprint matching and forensic examination and adjudication. Plus, high-throughput programs like US-VISIT can benefit from a simpler, more precise and hygienic approach to capturing fingerprint data.

Surround Imaging represents one of several innovations in live-scan and latent fingerprint technology under development by TBS, and is the first to be offered in a live-scan fingerprint system available for evaluation and purchase by customers and partners worldwide.
