Compassion Prison Project and CA Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris Raise ACE Awareness in CA Prison

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Compassion Prison Project (CPP) piloted its innovative new series "Trauma Talks," an educational video program with accompanying workbook this week. CPP's mission is to create trauma-informed prisons and communities by bringing trauma awareness education and proven healing modalities to the men and women living and working in prison. Statistically, those involved in the prison system have some of the highest number of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) in society.

As part of the "Trauma Talks" launch, on September 7th, 8th, and 9th 2021, CPP hosted an historic event at Valley State Prison (VSP) in California. Over a hundred men living at VSP shared their childhood trauma stories in Compassion Trauma Circles, joined by CPP Founder Fritzi Horstman, California Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris and 17 volunteers. CPP and Ms. Horstman are best known for the short film Step Inside the Circle, which has reached over 3.5 million viewers with its unprecedented look at childhood trauma behind bars. Dr. Burke Harris's office has established the bold goal of reducing ACEs and toxic stress by 50 percent within one generation.

The VSP event activities included supportive open discussions, exercises, and lectures. Catalina Villegas, Anchor of Your Weekend on Spectrum News 1, was on-site to capture the event as it unfolded. In addition, CPP provided mentorship training to several incarcerated residents and a specially designed Correctional Officer presentation was also featured for 30+ Correctional Officers.

Every single resident at Valley State Prison (2,900 in total) received the first volume of the "Trauma Talks" workbook and began the curriculum, thanks to the generous donation by one of CPP's supporters. CPP is on track to establish several other pilot launches of "Trauma Talks" in the United States and around the world by the end of 2021, with the goal of having the entire series available in all prisons by 2023.

The outcome of this event is that Valley State Prison will be the first fully trauma-informed, trauma-responsive prison in the country. With the "Trauma Talks" pilot, CPP has opened the doors for important transformation in the United States Criminal Justice community. The positive impact this educational and emotionally supportive program will have on incarcerated citizens and their families is immeasurable.

"When I found out I was traumatized by my parents and my upbringing, it changed how I felt about myself," Fritzi Horstman reflected on her way back from Valley State Prison. "I want to share what I've learned and make sure every person living in prison understands the principles of trauma, brain science and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) so people can forgive themselves, make amends and begin the healing process, not only for themselves, but for their families and their communities."

Jaiimoni Starr releases single ‘Stop and I Go,’ launching career at age 16

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Jaiimoni Starr, who sung solo songs and performed praise dances at church, and began her career doing cover raps, launches her first professional rap single with "Stop and I Go." She is 16.

Starr presented her first solo rap at East St. Louis Senior High School for a Black history program, and ever since her goal has been to express herself through music.

"The song was 'Glory,' by artists John Legend and Common. This is when I first realized I have rhythm and an interest in rapping," Starr writes on her website.

Since entering high school, she says, "I have experienced more complex things about life ... my writing style became deeper and more from a place of positivity, pain, eagerness, and venting. I wrote from what I felt because I wanted people to understand who I was through the songs I wrote.

"I aspire to teach young women that music doesn't always have to be portrayed in a negative and degrading way, also that you can get a message across and still sound or appear cool. I've learned that music can have a positive and negative effect on our generation, and its vibrations."

With an understanding of phrasing and song craft beyond her years, "she has an ease and flow in her writing and performing like she has been rapping for a long time," Martinez Robinson, Co-manager at Daugherty Entertainment said.

Allen Daugherty, Daugherty Entertainment, is managing the artist. Sham, one half of the Grammy award-winning duo the TrakStarz who discovered St. Louis music artist Chingy, and has worked with artists including Ludacris, 2chainz, Janet Jackson, & Usher, has teamed up with new production partner Virus, who toured alongside of Beyoncé, to produce the single.

Equity Distribution, created by Jay-Z, is a global music-distribution platform that allows artists to retain ownership of their masters and has signed a distribution deal with Starr and Daugherty Ent.

"We're really excited for Jaiimoni, she's an enormous talent and this break out for her is huge," Daugherty said.

ACNM Reaffirms Opposition to Legislative Threats to Abortion Care

SILVER SPRING, Md. -- American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is committed to people having unfettered access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care services, including abortion care, that are readily available, affordable, and guided by objective evidence-based information. Given this position, ACNM is dismayed by the failure of the United States Supreme Court to block the implementation of Texas Senate Bill 8, legislation that allows for the ban of abortions (which would include cases of rape or incest) as early as six weeks into pregnancy.

This decision sets in motion a dangerous precedent of upending the protections afforded under Roe v. Wade by allowing the most restrictive abortion law to go into effect in the second largest state in the country.

ACNM opposes legislative threats to abortion care. ACNM President, Cathy Collins-Fulea states, "ACNM continues to stand by our position that as midwives, we trust our patients as the experts of their own well-being and support each person's right to self-determination, access to comprehensive health information, and active participation in all aspects of an individualized plan of care."

The ACNM Code of Ethics mandates that midwives engage in the process of non-coercive, evidence-based informed consent and shared decision-making. Therefore, we object to any legislation and/or regulation that interferes with the patient-provider relationship.

"ACNM is committed to individual patient autonomy across the spectrum of reproductive health, including abortion. This commitment includes advocating to keep abortion access unconditionally safe and legal for all people midwives serve, but especially for vulnerable populations with limited resources and unequal access to quality healthcare," stated ACNM CEO Katrina Holland.

American College of Nurse-Midwives actively stands together with our other colleagues in sexual and reproductive health care and social justice advocates as we voice our strong objection to the erosion of bodily autonomy and access to essential health care services, including abortion care.

About ACNM

With over 6,500 members, ACNM is the professional association that represents certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) in the United States. ACNM promotes excellence in midwifery education, clinical practice, and research. With roots dating to 1929, our members are primary care providers for women throughout the lifespan, with a special emphasis on pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive health. ACNM provides research, administers, and promotes continuing education programs, establishes education and clinical practice standards, and creates liaisons with state and federal agencies and members of Congress to increase the visibility and recognition of midwifery care.

Revolutionary Restroom Organizer Protects Purses and Phones at Stalls and Urinals

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Increased awareness of germs and bacteria has changed our behavior regarding contact and hygiene. These changes are notable regarding the use of commercial restrooms, which 60% of Americans visit at least once a week. One of the top complaints of shared restrooms is the risk of subjecting one's personal belongings to germs, damage, and theft. This means every day, millions of people are entering a vulnerable space without convenient protection for their phones, purses, and other personal belongings. StallStash, a restroom partition shelf, improves the safety and comfort of restroom visits by keeping belongings clean, close, and safe.

"Today, 42% of us are more concerned about using a public restroom than we were 18 months ago," says Robert Kodner, president of StallStash. "In addition to sanitary issues, we know that the average cost of a cell phone is $580, and a typical purse contains $720 worth of items."

Kodner continues, "For many of us, using a public restroom is a 'necessary evil.' By offering a solution that allows restroom visitors to keep their belongings safe and clean, we are able to improve the restroom experience for everyone. As an added benefit, 64% of us will frequent a business based on the fact it has clean restrooms."

StallStash units attach easily to all standard restroom partitions (without tools or hardware), and are made of 100% plexiglass. StallStash units are engineered to protect cell phones, purses, laptops, wallets, backpacks, and briefcases.

Fran Kaiser, a property manager at Century Management in California, says, "When one of our tenants asked us to find a way to help keep purses, phones, and files off the bathroom floor, we knew just the standard hooks would not do. I searched high and low and nothing would fit their needs until we found StallStash. I now use them in our restrooms. They have held up to the usage, and we could not be happier with the product."

StallStash is designed for all public and commercial restrooms. StallStash clients include medical facilities, restaurants, commercial buildings, shopping centers, event spaces, schools, fitness centers, stadiums, venues, transportation terminals, places of worship, and popular attractions.

The Lowell Chamber Orchestra opens their third season with cosmic music, premieres

LOWELL, Mass. -- The Lowell Chamber Orchestra opens its third season this Saturday, September 25, with music inspired by the cosmos. The three works by Anna Clyne, Micah Roberts, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, all allude to a cosmic object.

The program starts with "Hypernovae," written by Tennessee composer Micah Roberts. "Hypernovae" was written for the Lowell Chamber Orchestra's first ever call-for-scores. Roberts' score was measured against about other 120 from nine different countries, and the judges were impressed by its driving force and unusual orchestration. "Hypernovae" will receive its first ever performance at the beginning of the program, and the composer will be present.

Following a world premiere, the second work in the program will be heard for the first time in Massachusetts. Anna Clyne's "Three Sisters" is a concerto for mandolin and string orchestra inspired by the three stars that make the "belt" of the constellation Orion.

About her piece, Clyne says "It's a piece I actually wrote in 3 locations. And one of the locations was my apartment in Brooklyn that had access to a rooftop and I would sit on the rooftop looking at the stars, often seeing the constellation Orion, which is also known as 'Three sisters.' So just thinking about the stars, the passage of time, and that journey."

Joseph Brent will be the featured soloist of the evening. Called, "one of the truly exceptional musicians of his generation," Brent has worked closely with many of the great modern composers, and has performed with many well-known chamber ensembles, including The International Contemporary Ensemble, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, among many others. He is a published author of mandolin pedagogy, and has released a few albums. "By the time I was 13 I knew mandolin was my voice," says Brent about his musical career's beginnings. Today, Brent plays mandolins with 5, 8, and 10 strings, all custom-made for him.

The concert ends with the very well know forty-first symphony by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Truthfully, Mozart was not thinking about Jupiter - the planet after which the symphony is named - when he wrote this symphony. According to a story, the nickname comes from a British publisher, who upon hearing the opening chords, thought of the thunderbolts of the ancient Greek god Jupiter. However, the symphony's majestic structure and use of instruments does compare with the largest planet of the solar system.

The concert is free to attend, but donations are most welcome. Audience is required to show proof of vaccination, and to be masked while indoors.
