Backbone’s Digital Steganography Database Exceeds 925 Applications

Author: Backbone Security
Dateline: Fairmont, West Virginia (FAIRMONT, W.Va.)  | Tue, 26 Apr 2011

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Backbone Security is pleased to announce the release of Version 3.9 of the Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) which now contains more than 925 steganography applications.”

A R T I C L E:

Backbone Security is pleased to announce the release of Version 3.9 of the Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) which now contains more than 925 steganography applications.

Developed in Backbone's Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), SAFDB is the world's largest commercially available hash set exclusive to digital steganography applications.

The database is widely used by U.S. and international government and law enforcement agencies, the intelligence community, and private sector digital forensic examiners and network security professionals to detect digital steganography applications on seized digital media or within inbound and outbound network traffic streams.

Discovery of a steganography application during a digital forensics examination is a strong indication the application has been, or will be, used to conceal evidence of criminal activity. Detecting a steganography application in the inbound network traffic stream is a strong indication an insider will use the application to steal sensitive information.

SAFDB is an integral part of the Steganography Analyzer Artifact Scanner (StegAlyzerAS), a digital forensics application, and the Steganography Analyzer Real-Time Scanner (StegAlyzerRTS), a network security appliance that detects the presence or use of steganography in the inbound and outbound network traffic stream in real-time.

Existing customers may download updated versions of StegAlyzerAS and StegAlyzerRTS that contains SAFDB v3.9 by logging into their account on the SARC web site at http://www.sarc-wv.com .

For additional information about Backbone's steganalysis tools, please visit the SARC web site or send email to sarc@backbonesecurity.com .

About the SARC:

The SARC was established to create and maintain a national repository of digital steganography applications, fingerprints, and signatures that can be used during forensic examination of seized digital storage media or when monitoring network traffic for malicious insider behavior. The Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) is the world's largest database exclusive to digital steganography applications.

About Backbone Security:

In addition to being the leading provider of digital steganalysis tools, Backbone is a Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) Approved Scanning Vendor (ASV) that conducts automated PCI-DSS compliance assessments with their industry leading One-Stop PCI Scan service. Backbone also provides real-time intrusion monitoring, vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, and business continuity and disaster recovery planning services. Copy Protect eBooks, Documents and Your Livelihood using DRM

Author: ArtistScope
Dateline: Los Angeles, California (LOS ANGELES, Calif.)  | Mon, 10 Jan 2011

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Protecting documents and eBooks from copy and redistribution can be a daunting task when having to choose from a myriad of protective solutions that cannot thwart the simplest of bandits. But now authors can rest assured that their livelihood can be secured, by using an ArtistScope document solution to control exactly who and how those documents can be accessed.”

A R T I C L E:

Protecting documents and eBooks from copy and redistribution can be a daunting task when having to choose from a myriad of protective solutions that cannot thwart the simplest of bandits. But now authors can rest assured that their livelihood can be secured, by using an ArtistScope document solution to control exactly who and how those documents can be accessed.

"Copy protection and DRM (digital rights management) have been around for years and most of it is superficial and easily circumvented," says ArtistScope CEO, William Kent, "but not so with CopySafe technology which provides the most secure copy protection and the only solution that is safe from all copy including print screen and screen capture."

Combined with ArtistScope's DRM technology you can now have the most secure document protection imaginable, where even if your document falls into the hands of an unauthorized user, one who has not paid for the privilege, then they will not be able to open it.

But the big plus with the ArtistScope PDF solution and DRM is that as the author of the document, you can change a document's properties at any time with immediate effect over all documents, even those that have already been downloaded. For example if you want to revoke a user's privileges or change it so that the document can no longer be printed, then you can simply update that document's settings at your Control Panel for immediate effect.

With ArtistScope DRM you can control who can open a document, who can print a document and even how many times a document can be opened or printed. And when an expiry date is set, it cannot be foiled in the usual manner by turning back a computer's clock, because it can use an online time server. However you also have the choice of only using the computer's clock for documents that need to be accessed in the field without Internet access.

Almost any type of file can be converted to PDF and CopySafe PDF Protector can then encrypt it for the most secure copy protection with/without DRM applied. ArtistScope also provides a ready to use online service for DRM validation where you can simply upload your DRM documents and manage subscriptions straight away.

For the PDF Protection software and DRM Portal visit http://artistscope.com/drm/ and learn more about ArtistScope Copy Protection Software at: http://www.artistscope.com/ .

For eBook and tutorial authors, protecting your livelihood has never been so easy or so effective.

Net Safety Monitoring Now Offering Innovative Ultrasonic (Acoustic) Gas Leak Detection Solution

Author: Net Safety Monitoring Inc.
Dateline: Calgary, Alberta, Canada (CALGARY, Alberta)  | Tue, 21 Dec 2010

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Net Safety Monitoring has extended its advanced flame and gas detection product portfolio with the release of our Banshee343 Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector. The product is designed to provide reliable, wide-area gas detection (toxic and/or combustible) coverage in any hazardous-area application where pressurized gas is present.”

A R T I C L E:

Net Safety Monitoring has extended its advanced flame and gas detection product portfolio with the release of our Banshee343 Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector. The product is designed to provide reliable, wide-area gas detection (toxic and/or combustible) coverage in any hazardous-area application where pressurized gas is present - regardless of the environmental conditions.

Ultrasonic gas leak detection has been proven-in-use for over a decade, originally pioneered by Shell in North Sea oil platform applications. Today the technology is commonly utilized together with traditional fixed detection technologies as a "first-line" of defense against dangerous gas leak situations in oil and gas installations. Acoustic gas leak detectors can be found world-wide in a variety of applications.

Ultrasonic (acoustic) gas leak detection technology offers several unique performance considerations: it does not have to wait until a gas concentration has accumulated to potentially dangerous concentrations, it offers a wide area of coverage, it does not require a gas cloud to eventually make physical contact with a sensor, and the response is instantaneous for all gas types.

The Banshee343 Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector only triggers an alarm when inaudible, ultrasound is detected (between 25 - 100 kHz) - which is only produced with the release of highly pressurized gas. This makes for extremely reliable and efficient performance by the detection system as there is no poisoning of sensors, it never requires field calibration, and all background noises are effectively filtered. And the available Analog, Relay, or Modbus outputs can communicate directly with any existing plant control system (DCS, PL/PLC, Fire&Gas panel, or SCADA).

"The Banshee343 Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector offers our customers a new level of safety like we have never been able to offer before. The speed of response with ultrasonic technologies can bridge the dangerous gap between gas detection in difficult conditions and the actual ignition of gas, when flame detection offers the final opportunity for automatic detection/reaction. When ultrasonic gas leak detection is combined with our advanced fixed gas; flame; and smoke/oil mist detection solutions, comprehensive safety coverage for our end-users is ensured," said Mike Nugent, Net Safety Monitoring VP of Sales and Marketing.

The Banshee343 also offers several distinct advantages over competitive ultrasonic gas leak detection solutions: factory-tuned sensors are calibrated for life, four piezoelectric sensor heads are sealed in a virtually indestructible ceramic housing and have no moving parts like a traditional microphone design, a wider and more reliable coverage area (4 independent sensor heads - 20 meter radius, approx 1600m2 from center), the widest operational temperature range in the market (the lowest AND highest temperature ratings available), and the SonicCal Diagnostic system which automatically cleans the sensor head and gives a "true" ultrasonic broadband self-test every 15mins to confirm continuous operation.

And rest assured that Net Safety Monitoring is fully committed to your successful commissioning. We offer full onsite sound mapping surveying and detector allocation, onsite commissioning assistance, and will provide your personnel with comprehensive training and testing equipment.

The Banshee343 detects deadly gas leaks at the speed of sound without being affected by inclement weather, wind direction, leak direction or any potential gas dilution. When utilized together with Net Safety innovative point gas detection, our advanced optical flame and smoke/oil mist detection a complete and comprehensive safety system is ensured for your plant and personnel.

Backbone Announces High Speed Real-Time Steganography Detection System

Author: Backbone Security
Dateline: Fairmont, West Virginia (FAIRMONT, W.Va.)  | Mon, 20 Dec 2010

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Backbone Security is pleased to announce the availability of a 1Gbps version of their network security appliance for detecting insider use of digital steganography to steal sensitive information.”

A R T I C L E:

Backbone Security is pleased to announce the availability of a 1Gbps version of their network security appliance for detecting insider use of digital steganography to steal sensitive information.

The Steganography Analyzer Real-time Scanner, StegAlyzerRTS, developed in Backbone's Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC) is the only commercially available real-time steganography detection system in the world. The latest generation of StegAlyzerRTS is capable of operating on networks with throughput of 1Gbps.

Digital steganography is the Internet era version of an information hiding technique that dates back to the days of Ancient Greece. Using digital steganography, a file can be embedded within, or appended to, another file in such a way that it cannot be seen or heard. Unlike cryptography, which translates information into an unintelligible sequence of letters and numbers, steganography conceals the very existence of the information.

One of the many consequences of the economic downturn is that trusted insiders have become more aware of the value of the information they work with on a day-to-day basis than ever before. In some respects, information has become more valuable than money because money, once spent, is gone but information can be sold and resold many times on the burgeoning black market for nearly any type of information.

Insider theft of sensitive information such as Personally Identifiable Information (PII), Protected Health Information (PHI), and intellectual property is increasing at an alarming pace. Insiders can easily find and use any of more than 1,000 steganography applications available as free ware or shareware on web sites across the Internet to steal information.

The current generation of network security appliances such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, intrusion prevention systems, and data loss prevention systems, with the exception of the Fidelis Extrusion Prevention System®, Fidelis XPS™, do not detect insider use of steganography. The Fidelis XPS system can detect insiders downloading steganography applications through the use of the Steganography Detection Policy created by Backbone exclusively for Fidelis' customers.

StegAlyzerRTS can detect insiders downloading any of the 875 digital steganography applications currently in the SARC's archives. Detecting this type of insider activity is an early warning indicator the insider is planning to steal sensitive information. The system can also detect insiders using selected steganography applications through a unique signature-based detection model.

"Any company with significant amounts of sensitive information or intellectual property on their network must be concerned about the threat from insider use of steganography to steal that information," according to Bart Guerreri, Chairman and CEO of Backbone Security. "Our one-of-a-kind turnkey system counters that threat. There's nothing else out there that can do what our system can do in terms of real-time steganography detection and hidden information extraction."

Backbone Security and our worldwide network of business partners are now taking orders.

About the SARC:

The SARC is a Center of Excellence in digital steganography research and development within Backbone Security. The SARC has established the world's largest commercially available repository of digital steganography applications, fingerprints, and signatures and has developed industry leading digital forensics tools and a network security appliance for detecting and extracting information hidden with digital steganography applications. More information: www.sarc-wv.com .

About Backbone Security:

In addition to the world class digital steganography research and development conducted in the SARC, Backbone is an Approved Scanning Vender (ASV) certified by the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards Council to conduct automated PCI Data Security Standard compliance assessments with a One-Stop Scanning Solution. Authernative Granted U.S. Patent for Two-Credential Authentication Factor

Author: Authernative, Inc.
Dateline: Redwood City, California (REDWOOD CITY, Calif.)  | Wed, 15 Dec 2010

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Authernative, Inc., the leading developer of innovative user authentication and identity management technologies, announced today that the United States Patent Office has granted the company a patent for a user authentication method.”

A R T I C L E:

Authernative, Inc., the leading developer of innovative user authentication and identity management technologies, announced today that the United States Patent Office has granted the company a patent for a user authentication method.

The newly issued U.S. Patent No. 7,849,321, titled "Authentication method of random partial digitized path recognition with a challenge built into the path" adds to Authernative's array of authentication methods based on random partial pattern recognition algorithms. It advances the security of Authernative's pattern based one-time PIN technology to provide a "what user knows" two-credential authentication.

With Authernative's Passline® pattern-based one-time PIN solution, the user's credential is a secret pattern on a virtual grid of cells. During each login session, the digital content on the grid is randomized and the user is challenged to enter the content from the randomly specified set of positions of his pattern. The newly patented Crossline™ technology extends the above method by concealing the location of the challenge inside the grid as a second "what user knows" secret credential. The combination of two secret credentials on the grid having randomized content, used to generate a one-time response, surpasses the security of one-time PIN tokens.

Dr. Len Mizrah, President and CEO of Authernative said, "This technology fills a security gap that afflicts existing knowledge based authentication solutions, such as passwords or security questions, without the need to carry a token, a smart card, mobile device or any other authenticator, and without threat of credential compromise. Moreover, unlike a combination of a PIN and token, where the PIN is static and the token is displayed to anyone in its possession, Authernative's patented technology reliably veils both credentials."

The newly patented Crossline™ technology has a variety of applications. For example, the Crossline™ can be used by a field operative to securely access an online resource without having to carry a separate device, which could compromise the operative or access to the resource. Similarly, a consumer can use the Crossline™ at an Internet cafe to strongly authenticate himself without anything more than his theft-proof knowledge-based secret. While, an enterprise employee can use the Crossline™ to gain secure access to the network from anywhere in the world. Or a bank or healthcare provider can offer Crossline™ for security conscious users without added costs or inconvenience.

This user-centric authentication method provides a common user experience from all networked devices including computers, mobile devices, smart cards, set-top-boxes, Point-of-Sale, ATM, VoIP terminal or touch screen displays. It provides stronger security than hardware-based authenticators while preserving the cost-effective, electronic mass deployment and ease of use typical of passwords.

The technology is part of the AuthGuard® versatile authentication platform offering different methods and levels of authentication to meet a range of security and usability requirements. AuthGuard® provides one-factor, layered, and multi-factor authentication that is electronically mass deployable, has scalable security, high usability and low total cost of ownership. AuthGuard® patented authentication methods include enhanced password, pattern-based one-time PIN, out-of-band, and mobile client solutions. AuthGuard® is also integrated with the FIPS 140-2 certified Authernative® Cryptographic Module and utilizes a patented encryption key management system combined with a mutual authentication protocol.

Authernative's granted patent adds to the company's patent portfolio solidifying the company's ability to provide innovative, secure and cost-effective user authentication solutions. With the increase in advanced persistent threats, identity theft, cyber crime, and data breaches, enterprises, government agencies, online service providers, and consumers can benefit from AuthGuard® authentication product to secure online and mobile access to networks, cloud computing and SaaS.

About Authernative:

Authernative provides innovative software security solutions offering identity and access management capabilities including advanced authentication, secure remote and mobile access, and user credentialing. The company's products are used to assure authenticated access to devices, confidential data, protected resources, information sharing and transactions. They allow businesses and government agencies to lower the cost of providing, deploying and managing strong user authentication for enabling e-government, e-business and addressing corporate and regulatory compliance requirements. Authernative holds multiple US and foreign patents, GSA schedule, FIPS 140-2 certification and the 2009 Best Security Solution award from the Government Technology Research Alliance (GTRA) Council. http://www.authernative.com .

Author: SecuGen Corporation
Dateline: Santa Clara, California (SANTA CLARA, Calif.)  | Mon, 13 Dec 2010

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “SecuGen, the world's leading optical fingerprint device vendor, is pleased to announce that Virtual Case Management® has selected SecuGen's line of Hamster fingerprint readers for integration with their Virtual Case Management (VCM) software.”

A R T I C L E:

SecuGen, the world's leading optical fingerprint device vendor, is pleased to announce that Virtual Case Management® has selected SecuGen's line of Hamster fingerprint readers for integration with their Virtual Case Management (VCM) software. VCM is a paperless database case management solution for investigators, process servers, intelligence analysts and the security industry. Administrators can easily and securely manage the access rights to all documents as well as video and audio attachments. Employees, subcontractors and clients are all able to log in securely via internal email and instant messaging

SecuGen's Hamster Plus and Hamster IV fingerprint readers are world renowned for their accuracy, durability, and affordability, making SecuGen number one in the world in price competitiveness. The Hamster IV is a FIPS 201/PIV compliant reader that, when combined with SecuGen's NIST/MINEX compliant feature extraction and matching algorithms, provides a fully PIV compliant solution.

"We concluded that SecuGen's feature extraction and matching algorithms are fast and have a very low failure rate, near zero in fact," said Darren Epstein, the President of Virtual Case Management LLC. "Our testing revealed a very high build quality with every biometric reader built to the highest standards, resulting in fingerprint readers that are quick and accurate. We also tried to trick the system by using a variety of tactics, such as, lifting the previous print via tape, however all our efforts to bypass the security failed. These fingerprint algorithms have been rigorously tested by NIST's MINEX test program to certify that they're accurate, interoperable and robust enough to work in the diverse environments of federal agencies and commercial facilities across the nation."

Jeff Brown, VP of Sales for SecuGen stated, "We are very proud of our relationship with Virtual Case Management LLC. Working with them has been a pleasure, and we believe that they are providing a greatly needed application for organizations of all types that find case management to be of growing importance."

Won Lee, CEO of SecuGen added, "We are quite pleased to have our fingerprint readers selected by Virtual Case Management LLC. We strive to develop products that Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) can integrate into their solutions and feel confident of the quality of the resulting integration. Our relationship with Virtual Case Management LLC is a perfect example of this."

About Virtual Case Management LLC:

Virtual Case Management was founded by Darren L. Epstein, former United States Air Force Security Specialist, Police Officer, and OSI (Office of Special Investigations). With over 20 years of experience consulting Fortune 500 companies, the insurance industry, and leading law firms around the nation, Mr. Epstein found it necessary for all parties involved in a case to have the ability to access files and collaborate over the case securely. VCM was developed after many years of working with various legal case managers, paralegals, and SIU (Special Investigative Units) who provided real-world knowledge of how to work a case structure for a controlled outcome. VCM is now used by attorneys, investigators, intelligence analysts, and process servers in the legal, investigative, government, and security industries.

A R T I C L E:

NetSecurity Corporation, a company positioned to be the brand of choice in digital forensics, cyber security, and training, announced today that it is giving away brand-new laptops loaded with forensic tools to students who attend its select Hands-On How-To® courses and register by the advertised registration deadline.

NetSecurity's proprietary Hands-On How-To® training courses are different than traditional courses that are vendor-, product-, or certification-focused. Instead, the Hands-On How-To® training courses emphasize solving real-world problems faced in the field by security and computer forensic practitioners.

The current Hands-On How-To® training course offering includes: Computer Forensics for Beginners, Advanced Computer Forensics, Incident Response, Malware Analysis, Memory Forensics, Network Forensics, and Ethical Hacking. Students attending NetSecurity Hands-On How-To® courses range from professionals that are Computer Forensics Investigators, Cyber Security Analysts, Incident Responders, Malware Analysts, Law Enforcement Personnel, Compliance Officers, Auditors and Attorneys, to Technology Enthusiasts of all levels.

"Investigators from the U.S. government, defense and intelligence agencies, law enforcement and corporations, are coming to rely on our training because our hands-on how-to learning environment emphasizes practical knowledge and analytical problem solving skills required to handle the stress of real-world scenarios," said Inno Eroraha, founder and chief strategist of NetSecurity.

"To reach this goal, we offer small class sizes and provide each student a laptop with which to conduct class exercises. Students meeting the stated registration deadlines are offered a brand-new laptop loaded with forensic tools that would allow them to begin investigating cyber crimes the day after the class ends," adds Eroraha.

Some of NetSecurity's alumni have the following to say:

"This [Malware Analysis Course] should be the standard"

"The course was all and more than I expected."

"[The Instructor's] level of knowledge and expertise was apparent and he was very helpful and patient during the exercises."

"[The Instructor] was extremely knowledgeable! Presentation very nicely designed and delivered. [The Instructor] was always open to questions and discussion."

"The instructor was a great one to have. It is obvious that he enjoys this and that makes a better learning experience."
