A R T I C L E:

TeamSnap, a fast growing sports management SaaS and mobile app, announces a list of local organizations using its Club and League Solution that now includes the Boulder Panthers Basketball Club of Boulder, Colo. TeamSnap climbed into iTunes' top 40 free sports apps list this month while the club continues to use it as a tool to help grow the sport of basketball.

The Boulder Panthers, a basketball club for fifth through eighth grade boys and girls in the Boulder, Colo. area, is directed by Luis Gomez-Do'lbarra, a former Olympian and professional basketball player. Gomez-Do'lbarra has a passion for youth and started the club 12 years ago. "He is the heart and soul of Boulder Panther basketball," said Richard Leddon one of the club's sixth grade boys' coaches.

The Panthers strive to expose as many players as possible to competitive basketball and are dedicated to the development of youth through basketball.

To grow the sport of basketball even more, Leddon approached Gomez-Do'lbarra about using TeamSnap as a tool to stay organized. They now use every feature TeamSnap has to offer. They are familiar with its club level features like scheduling, player database management, mass messaging, customizable registration, a public website, and other features designed for League Commissioners and organizers like Leddon and others who lead busy lifestyles as volunteer coaches.

TeamSnap is also fully integrated on the team level with Leddon's 6th grade boys' basketball team that ended its season with a winning record. Leddon would automatically send his team messages about locations, practice times, and other notifications so he could avoid time on the phone with all 11 of his players' parents. One time he used TeamSnap text messaging to notify his team right before a tournament to tell them to avoid a trafficked road. If he hadn't done that, the team could have forfeited the game.

As a part of their mission to grow the sport of basketball, the Panthers Club is a part of the Gold Crown Foundation, an organization committed to aligning the middle schools and high schools in Colorado so that kids are encouraged to continue playing.

The Gold Crown Foundation also has after school programs and academic enrichment programs through classroom work to further develop youth through basketball. Some Boulder Panthers athletes attend summer camps with a computer class in the morning and basketball in the afternoon.

"It's a positive experience in basketball for kids rather than the negative things kids can get into if they don't have those positive programs," said Leddon. "At this level, you just want these kids to learn to enjoy basketball, and have a positive experience."

‘Edge of Thought’ Exhibit Opens at the Calumet Gallery

A R T I C L E:

Calumet Gallery announces "Edge of Thought," a thematic exhibition from fine art photographer James Maxwell. A native of Tennessee now residing in Pismo Beach, Calif., Maxwell is an artist who works at several levels: sculptor; innovative architect; and as a photographer who is equally at home with digital printing as well as alternative photographic processes using a traditional wet darkroom.

"Edge of Thought" is an exhibit (March 5 - April 5, 2013; 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., Mon.-Sat.) of twenty-one diffuse, ethereal images. Using film, and recording images on the edge of the visual light spectrum, Maxwell strives to portray the subterranean content of the mind and the moment just before perception crystallizes into conscious awareness. The goal is not to document "reality" as perceived by the artist, but to evoke an awareness of multiple potential realities in the viewer.

Maxwell employs various techniques to achieve the desired effect, including a dreamlike diffusion of light, the grainy texture of the film, the choice of materials on which the images are printed, even a layered doubling of certain translucent images which are then backlit, so that a sense of mystery permeates throughout.

When asked about the how and the why of his work, Maxwell speaks of his own curiosity about how different perceptions of reality can arise from different personal histories, different spiritual beliefs, different cultural outlooks, even different neurological cognitive conditions or a deeper understanding of quantum physics.

Maxwell recalls a world altering experience of his own: "I must've been just shy of a year's age when my father handed me a small blue ball, a sphere which seemed large in my infant hands. When I placed one of my hands on the far side of the ball, I suddenly and irrevocably added the third dimension to my awareness. I remember gasping from fear and delight simultaneously." As he later stated: "Things are not necessarily what we believe we are seeing, so I try to get to a reality beyond what is visible."

Viewers of his photographs can sense his architectural and sculptural skills at work in the manner in which each image demonstrates a deft ability with space and light: "I enjoy leading the eye of the viewer through an experience of spatial relationships and light, both in my architectural work and in my photography."

Marie Mazur, manager of Calumet Gallery, will host a Celebration Reception, open to the public, for the "Edge of Thought" exhibit from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on March 8, 2013. The artist will give a talk at 6:30.

"Maxwell's work," Mazur said, "is indicative of the depth and breadth of photography exhibits that Calumet presents. We invite the public to explore this exciting work and to enjoy an interesting talk with Mr. Maxwell."

Blue Hill Troupe Presents New Production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Mikado’ to Benefit the GO Project

Author: Blue Hill Troupe, Ltd.
Dateline: New York, New York (NEW YORK, N.Y.)  | Wed, 23 Jan 2013

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “The Blue Hill Troupe, Ltd., the only musical theater group in New York City to donate its net proceeds to charity, will unveil a new production of Gilbert and Sullivan's 'The Mikado' with full orchestra, April 12-20, 2013 at El Teatro of El Museo del Barrio. Proceeds will benefit the GO Project.”

A R T I C L E:

The Blue Hill Troupe, Ltd., the only musical theater group in New York City to donate its net proceeds to charity, will unveil a new production of Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Mikado" with full orchestra, April 12-20, 2013 at El Teatro of El Museo del Barrio (1230 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street).

Proceeds from "The Mikado" will benefit the GO Project (www.goprojectnyc.org).

Considered by many to be the gem of the Gilbert & Sullivan canon, "The Mikado" is an irresistible concoction of rapturous melody, witty satire, and exotic locale, peopled with unforgettable characters. Tickets range in price from $28 to $100 and are available online at http://www.bht.org or by calling 866-811-4111. Payment in excess of $20 per ticket is tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.

The GO Project is committed to closing the achievement gap for families who have children struggling in New York City Public Schools. For 44 years, GO has provided essential academic and family support services to under-resourced, underperforming public school children in lower Manhattan.

The Blue Hill Troupe is currently accepting proposals for its charity partner for the 2014-2015 season. Visit http://bht.org/charityselect.php for further information.

"The Mikado" is directed by Gary Slavin, whose recent Off Broadway credits include "Show Choir! - The Musical" and the hit political revue "Bush Is Bad." Musical direction is by Zachary Schwartzman, an assistant conductor with the American Symphony Orchestra.

Since 1924, the Blue Hill Troupe has produced a large-scale Gilbert & Sullivan operetta every spring, with lavish production values and full orchestra. Each year, the net proceeds benefit a different New York City charity, with the impressive total donated approaching $4 million. Prior charities include "I Have A Dream" Foundation(R) - New York Metro Area (2012), The Carter Burden Center for the Aging (2011), The New York Foundling (2010), and Inwood House (2009).

The all-volunteer Blue Hill Troupe has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning and with The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. For fifteen years, they presented a concert in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Concerts and Lectures series, and they continue to concertize in venues around the city.

In its 89-year history, the Blue Hill Troupe has produced the entire Gilbert & Sullivan canon, including "Thespis," the pair's first collaboration, to which Sullivan's score has been lost. In June 2008, the Blue Hill Troupe presented a concert version of "Thespis," with a new score by Grammy Award-winning composer and record producer Thomas Z. Shepard. In 2005, the Blue Hill Troupe was honored with three awards at the 12th Annual International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, UK, for its innovative production of the G&S rarity, "The Grand Duke."

The Blue Hill Troupe accepts applications for membership each fall. For more information, visit http://bht.org/join.php .

Fish and Game Commission Rejects Study They’ve Never Read

Author: LegalizeFerrets.org
Dateline: La Mesa, California (LA MESA, Calif.)  | Thu, 17 Jan 2013

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Legalize Ferrets announces new White House petition to help legalize ferrets in California. Over the past 25 years California ferret lovers have worked diligently to catch up to the rest of the 48 continental states to have our right for legal ferret ownership.”

A R T I C L E:

Legalize Ferrets announces new White House petition to help legalize ferrets in California. Over the past 25 years California ferret lovers have worked diligently to catch up to the rest of the 48 continental states to have our right for legal ferret ownership.

"What is taken for granted in the rest of the world; i.e. domestic ferrets are domestic animals and present no threat to the environment has not convinced the California Fish and Game to relent on their ban or bias regarding these companion animals," says Pat Wright of Legalize Ferrets.

Despite the fact they are already here in large numbers. California has more pet ferrets than #2 and #3 states combined (New York and Texas) - The California Fish and Game Commission won't even answer our most basic questions.

Now that a WhiteHouse.gov petition is floating around and gaining some press attention. The Fish and Game Commission is not just blocking, but obfuscating our rights to have this issue dealt with.

The petition can be found at http://wh.gov/P2FB .

Prime evidence is their refusal to process a preliminary Environmental Impact Report they required way back in 2000. It was finally presented to them in 2010. Then they required a CEQA checklist which was presented to them a few months after their request/demand.

Neither document was accepted for processing. Sonke Mastrup, now Executive Director of the Fish and Game Commission said there was not enough budget or staff time to process it. We even offered to pay staff time but never received a response.

Now they are rejecting the document "too limited and not scientifically valid."

A Public Records Request act was filed on January 14th and has yet to be acknowledged. We want to know who evaluated the document and when did they do it. Most likely it has never been read by anyone at the Fish and Game Department. This is yet another example of how unfair they are.

We're not asking them to legalize ferrets. We're asking them to give the issue a fair hearing. And it's falling not on deaf ears - but on hostile ears.

Do it for the little guy and sign our petition at http://wh.gov/P2FB .

That's why a little nudge from the White House; an acknowledgment that we're being treated unfairly would be extremely welcomed by California's besieged ferret owners.

DesignWise Medical and Cnicus LLC Awarded $25,000 Grant to Develop Pediatric Feeding Tube Locating Device

Author: DesignWise Medical Inc.
Dateline: Minneapolis, Minnesota (MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.)  | Tue, 08 Jan 2013

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Pediatric non-profit, DesignWise Medical, Inc., in conjunction with Cnicus LLC (Chicago, Ill.) has been awarded a $25,000 grant by the Atlanta Pediatric Device Consortium to continue the development of a medical device used to confirm the correct placement of feeding tubes in infants and children.”

A R T I C L E:

Pediatric non-profit, DesignWise Medical, Inc., in conjunction with Cnicus LLC (Chicago, Ill.) has been awarded a $25,000 grant by the Atlanta Pediatric Device Consortium to continue the development of a medical device used to confirm the correct placement of feeding tubes in infants and children.

Tube feeding, although commonly used in clinical settings, is not without risk. Incorrect placement of a feeding tube into the trachea (rather than correctly into the esophagus) can result in filling the lungs with liquid feeding formula, and can lead to serious medical complications and even death.

Some studies have shown that feeding tubes are incorrectly placed up to 55 percent of the time, and currently the principal method for confirming correct placement is with an X-ray which in the home setting is not an option.

The SurTube(TM) feeding tube has an externally communicating tip whose location in a child's body can be determined with a simple external detector, without the need for a confirming X-ray and its inherent radiation exposure.

"This grant is incredibly important to the continued development of this much needed device for children and will allow us to refine the design and demonstrate its feasibility," says DesignWise Medical founder and CEO, Brad Slaker. "Additionally, this is the first large project-specific grant DesignWise Medical has received and represents an important milestone for us. This grant further validates the unique approach we are taking to develop the needed medical products for children through a non-profit, volunteer-based business model."

The initial concept for the SurTube(TM) device was invented by pediatric nurse Kathryn Waitzman who also founded Cnicus, LLC to develop the SurTube device and bring it to market.

The Atlanta Pediatric Device Consortium (APDC), created in 2010, is an FDA-funded group of Atlanta-based organizations whose mission is to "enhance the lives of children through the development of novel pediatric medical devices, which are both safe and effective."

About DesignWise Medical:

DesignWise Medical (www.designwisemedical.org) is a Minnesota-based, 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 2008 whose mission is to develop medical device and product solutions to children's unmet medical needs. It is a volunteer-based organization funded entirely by charitable contributions, foundation and corporate grants.

Children need devices that are safe, effective and sized appropriately for them. Technology already exists that could address many children's unmet medical needs, improving outcomes and quality of life and ultimately reducing health care costs. However, these markets are small, making it difficult for traditional medical device companies to achieve an adequate ROI.

DesignWise Medical is able to develop pediatric devices for approximately one-fifth (1/5) the cost of the traditional for-profit approach. Through the sustained involvement of pediatric clinicians, parents, sponsors, volunteers and students, DesignWise Medical is able to identify, create and deliver collaborative solutions to this underserved population.

To date, more than 280 volunteers have donated over 30,000 hours of their time working on ten active pediatric device projects. DesignWise Medical has sponsored 32 student projects at nine colleges and universities, providing learning opportunities for higher education student volunteers, helping them to succeed in today's competitive medical technology job market.
