Backbone Security Announces New Product Availability – StegAlyzerFS Performs Rapid Field Triage for Detecting Digital Steganography

Author: Backbone Security
Dateline: Fairmont, West Virginia (FAIRMONT, W.Va.)  | Mon, 07 Jan 2013

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Backbone Security, Inc., the global leader in advanced digital steganography detection and hidden information extraction tools, is pleased to announce a new addition to their highly acclaimed StegAlyzer family of products.”

A R T I C L E:

Backbone Security, Inc., the global leader in advanced digital steganography detection and hidden information extraction tools, is pleased to announce a new addition to their highly acclaimed StegAlyzer family of products.

The Steganography Analyzer Field Scanner (StegAlyzerFS) is a digital forensic examination tool designed specifically for rapid field triage on suspect computers running Microsoft Windows(R), Linux, or Intel(R)-based Apple(R) operating systems to detect the presence or use of digital steganography to conceal evidence of criminal activity or insider theft of intellectual property or other sensitive information.

StegAlyzerFS can process the FAT, FAT32, and NTFS files systems on Windows; the ext2, ext3, ext4, ReiserFS, and XFS file systems on Linux; and the HFS+ file system on Intel-based Apple operating systems.

Comprised of highly specialized steganography detection software on a bootable USB flash drive, StegAlyzerFS scans storage media on suspect computers while preserving forensic integrity of the system.

StegAlyzerFS detects file artifacts associated with over 1,125 steganography applications. Detecting artifacts is an indication the associated application may have been used to hide something that may be of evidentiary value to the investigation.

StegAlyzerFS also detects more than 55 known signatures of steganography applications. Detecting a signature is an indication the associated application was used to hide potentially valuable digital evidence by embedding the evidence within, or appending it to, a carrier file.

StegAlyzerFS is a highly valuable tool for forensic examiners and incident response teams for uncovering hidden information in a wide variety of use cases.

For example, StegAlyzerFS can be used:
* at border checkpoints for random searches of computers entering or leaving the country or for searching the computers of individuals acting in a suspicious manner;
* for detecting insider theft of intellectual property or other sensitive information;
* in child abduction cases when time is of the essence for finding any information that may shed light on the whereabouts of the missing child;
* in cases involving child pornography to quickly find images that may have been hidden with steganography in order to identify and rescue the child victims as quickly as possible;
* in cases involving terrorism to detect covert communications between individuals or groups.

Bart Guerreri, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Backbone Security, said "Our new product fills a critical gap in the tool kits used by digital forensic examiners and incident response team members at a very affordable price. With the world's only digital forensic triage tool exclusive to steganography, StegAlyzerFS sets Backbone Security apart from the competition."

StegAlyzerFS is available for $395 in quantities of 1 to 4 and for $295 in quantities of 5 or more. Each license comes with software updates and telephone or email technical support for one year from the date of purchase.

World’s Largest Digital Steganography Database Expands Again – SAFDB Now Contains Over 1,125 Applications

Author: Backbone Security
Dateline: Fairmont, West Virginia (FAIRMONT, W.Va.)  | Mon, 03 Dec 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Backbone Security is pleased to announce the release of the latest version of their Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) which now contains over 1,125 steganography applications. Developed in Backbone's Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), SAFDB is the world's largest commercially available hash set exclusive to digital steganography applications.”

A R T I C L E:

Backbone Security is pleased to announce the release of the latest version of their Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) which now contains over 1,125 steganography applications. Developed in Backbone's Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), SAFDB is the world's largest commercially available hash set exclusive to digital steganography applications.

The database is widely used by US and international government and law enforcement agencies, the intelligence community, and private sector digital forensic examiners and network security professionals to detect digital steganography applications on seized digital media and within inbound and outbound network traffic streams.

Discovery of a steganography application during a digital forensics examination is a strong indication the application has been, or will be, used to conceal evidence of criminal activity. Detecting a steganography application in the inbound network traffic stream is a strong indication an insider will use the application to steal sensitive information.

SAFDB is an integral part of the Steganography Analyzer Artifact Scanner (StegAlyzerAS), a digital forensics application, and the Steganography Analyzer Real-Time Scanner (StegAlyzerRTS), a network security appliance that detects the presence or use of steganography in the inbound and outbound network traffic stream in real-time.

Existing customers may download an updated version of StegAlyzerAS and StegAlyzerRTS that contains SAFDB v3.15 by logging into their account on the SARC Customer Portal at http://www.sarc-wv.com/customer_portal/ .

For additional information about Backbone's steganalysis tools, please visit the SARC web site or send email to sarc@backbonesecurity.com.

About the SARC:

The SARC was established to create and maintain a national repository of digital steganography applications, fingerprints, and signatures that can be used during forensic examination of seized digital storage media or when monitoring network traffic for malicious insider behavior. The Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) is the world's largest database exclusive to digital steganography applications.

About Backbone Security:

In addition to being the leading provider of digital steganalysis tools, Backbone is a Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) Approved Scanning Vendor (ASV) that conducts automated PCI-DSS compliance assessments with their industry leading One-Stop PCI Scan service. Backbone also provides real-time intrusion monitoring, vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, and business continuity and disaster recovery planning services.

Backbone Security’s Steganography Detection Capability Integrated with Axxera’s Central Intelligence SIEM platform

Author: Backbone Security
Dateline: Fairmont, West Virginia (FAIRMONT, W.Va.)  | Mon, 10 Sep 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Backbone Security announced today that Axxera has integrated their Steganography Analyzer Real-Time Scanner into Central Intelligence Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) platform. This integration brings together two leading technologies for monitoring insider use of digital steganography to exfiltrate sensitive information from the enterprise network.”

A R T I C L E:

Backbone Security announced today that Axxera has integrated their Steganography Analyzer Real-Time Scanner into Central Intelligence Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) platform. This integration brings together two leading technologies for monitoring insider use of digital steganography to exfiltrate sensitive information from the enterprise network.

Through this partnership, Axxera's customers now have access to the world's only network security appliance capable of detecting insiders downloading and using steganography applications in real time. This solution can be combined with other security tools and efficiently managed by Axxera's Central Intelligence. Central Intelligence offers advanced event correlation and an integrated ticketing system built on the ITIL framework helps reduce the time required to identify and mitigate the advanced attacks frequently seen in current global cyber environment.

Digital steganography is an Internet era version of an information hiding technique dating back to the days of Ancient Greece. Using digital steganography, a file can be embedded within, or appended to, another file in such a way that it cannot be seen or heard. Unlike cryptography, which translates information into an unintelligible sequence of letters and numbers, steganography conceals the very existence of the information.

Insiders are increasingly becoming aware of the value of information they work with on a daily basis. Accordingly, insider theft of sensitive information is increasing at an alarming pace. Insiders can use any of the large number of steganography applications available on the Internet as freeware or shareware to ex-filtrate personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), intellectual property, trade secrets, or any other sensitive information, for example, outside the enterprise network. This nefarious insider activity will not be detected because the current generation of network security appliances does not detect insider use of steganography.

StegAlyzerRTS version 3.3, developed in Backbone's Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), is a network security sensor that detects insiders downloading any of the 1,100+ applications currently in the SARC's archive of steganography applications.

Detecting insiders downloading a steganography application is an early warning indicator there is a high probability the insider is planning to use the steganography application to steal sensitive information.

Using the analytical approach to detecting steganography developed in the SARC, StegAlyzerRTS can also detect insider use of a subset of the 1,100+ applications through a unique signature-based detection model.

Version 3.3 features numerous changes designed to increase the performance, stability, and reliability of the appliance when monitoring very high throughput networks. Most importantly, this version features improved archive/compressed file processing performance that significantly improves the capability to rapidly analyze HTTP traffic.

"It's challenging enough to defend against outsider threats to a company's intellectual property and other sensitive data," said Bart G. Guerreri, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Backbone Security. "However, it's even harder to defend against the insider with legitimate access that could cause the most damage. Our state-of-the-art real-time steganography detection appliance was specifically designed to counter the emerging threat of insiders using steganography to steal the crown jewels."

"Although some of our larger customers have comprehensive security services in place, other customers have specifically requested steganography detection services from us. The integration of Backbone's industry leading real-time steganography detection capability with Axxera's Central Intelligence SIEM provides a seamless solution for our customers, giving them complete visibility into this emerging insider threat," said Reddy Marri, CEO of Axxera.

StegAlyzerRTS version 4.0, currently under development for release in Q1 2013 will provide the capability to manage multiple geographically dispersed StegAlyzerRTS appliances from one location. This feature will be of particular interest to large domestic or international enterprises with multiple data centers around the world.

StegAlyzerRTS is available for both 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps networks. For more information please visit www.sarc-wv.com or send email to sarc@backbonesecurity.com.

nPulse and Sourcefire Introduce Security Monitoring Integration Partnership

Author: nPulse Technologies
Dateline: Charlottesville, Virginia (CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.)  | Tue, 04 Sep 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “nPulse Technologies and Sourcefire(R), the leader in intelligent cybersecurity solutions, today announced a technology integration partnership that provides customers with extended visibility into zero day threats and new signatures.”

A R T I C L E:

nPulse Technologies and Sourcefire(R), the leader in intelligent cybersecurity solutions, today announced a technology integration partnership that provides customers with extended visibility into zero day threats and new signatures. nPulse has connected its Pivot2PCAP security monitoring API directly with Sourcefire's Next-Generation Intrusion Prevention Systems (NGIPS) technology, which allows users to accelerate incident response on current events and enables retrospective analysis on historical traffic.

nPulse's Pivot2PCAP API provides this insight through simple drill-down access to stored flow and packet information. It is implemented on nPulse's HammerHead platform, which can capture, index, and analyze network traffic at speeds up to 20Gbps.

"Pivot2PCAP is a powerful query language, which allows customers to 'pivot' from the meta-data of an alert down to the real data contained in the relevant traffic stream," explained Randy Caldejon, nPulse's CTO. "This means that analysts can immediately focus on identifying and addressing the root cause, rather than having to first spend hours manually searching through massive data stores to find the right packets."

"This partnership is part of our continued commitment to the Sourcefire Technology Partnership (STP) ecosystem," said Douglas Hurd, director of technical alliances for Sourcefire. "This integration - which further extends the visibility provided by our NGIPS technologies - gives users one-click access to additional extra-IPS intelligence for deeper visibility into the nature of threats."

nPulse Joins HP ArcSight Technology Alliance Partner Program

Author: nPulse Technologies
Dateline: Charlottesville, Virginia (CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.)  | Tue, 10 Jul 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “nPulse Technologies announced today that the company has joined the HP ArcSight Technology Alliance Partner Program as a Gold partner and has received HP ArcSight Action Connector certification. As part of the certification, nPulse Technologies demonstrated interoperability between nPulse's Pivot2Pcap technology and the HP Security Intelligence and Risk Management (SIRM) platform.”

A R T I C L E:

nPulse Technologies announced today that the company has joined the HP ArcSight Technology Alliance Partner Program as a Gold partner and has received HP ArcSight Action Connector certification. As part of the certification, nPulse Technologies demonstrated interoperability between nPulse's Pivot2Pcap technology and the HP Security Intelligence and Risk Management (SIRM) platform.

Using the HP ArcSight Action Connector, nPulse's trusted full packet-level capture and search capability has been tested and certified by HP and is now available to HP and nPulse customers. The nPulse HammerHead platform and full function Pivot2Pcap API allows easy access for third party applications to store flow and packet information. The HammerHead platform can capture and store network traffic at speeds up to 20Gbps.

Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) applications generate alerts when anomalous or threatening behavior is correlated from security events. These alerts provide a meta-data description of the traffic that caused the alert, including parameters such as IP addresses, time, and protocol information. However, identifying and resolving the root cause of the alert usually requires deeper insight into the specific traffic behind the event.

Following integration via the Pivot2Pcap API, HP ArcSight users can now drill down to individual packet contents with a simple right-click option within the HP ArcSight Console, eliminating the need to leave the application interface.

"nPulse is excited to join the HP ArcSight Technology Alliance Partner Program," said Randy Caldejon, nPulse's CTO. "We built our Pivot2Pcap API to allow quick access to packet data for network security analysts and we are pleased to have HP as a partner take advantage of that capability leveraging the HP ArcSight Action Connector."

"The demand from organizations for reduced time to resolution and improved operational efficiency around security events continues to grow," said Buck Watia, director, Business Development, Enterprise Security Products, HP. "This interoperability with nPulse HammerHead's packet capture and replay capabilities creates a powerful solution while complementing the overall HP Enterprise Security Products ecosystem."
