Study Identifies Boston’s Top-Rated Plastic Surgeons

BOSTON, Mass. -- An analysis of multiple online rating sources has shed light as to whom Boston-area plastic surgical patients consider the area's top plastic surgeon. According to actual patient ratings gathered from five different rating platforms, Dr. Jeffery Spiegel, of The Spiegel Center, was ranked as the area's top plastic surgeon, receiving more five-star ratings from his patients than any other plastic surgeon.

The study, conducted by John C. Anderson Ph.D., a former professor of management at UCLA and consultant in the plastic surgery industry, compiled patient ratings from five key platforms-Google, Facebook, RealSelf, Vitals.com, and RateMD.com, looking specifically at which physicians had received five-star ratings from patients, and for which procedures.

Dr. Spiegel received 221 five-star ratings. The next surgeon with the most five-star ratings, Dr. Jeffrey Darrow, earned 125 top marks from his patients. Others, with fewer top marks, included Boston plastic surgeons Dr. Sean Doherty, Dr. Richard Bartlett, Dr. Samuel Lin, Dr. George Volpe, Dr. Leonard Miller, Dr. Summer Slavin, and Dr. Joseph Russo.

The number of five-star reviews earned by the surgeons ranged from 12 to 221.

In addition, the study looked at which procedures earned the doctors the most top reviews. These tended to flow along the lines of each practice's specialty. Dr. Spiegel, for example, was ranked highest in facial plastic surgery (rhinoplasties, face lifts, injectables, blepharoplasties, and facial feminization surgeries).

Other surgeons were noted for their skills in breast augmentation and reduction, injectables, rhinoplasty, and gynecomastia.

Patient ratings are one indicator of physician quality along with board certification, academic credentials, and experience.

Atlantic Coast Surgical Suites performs first navigated reverse total shoulder at an ambulatory surgery center in New England

SEABROOK, N.H. -- Atlantic Coast Surgical Suites is an ambulatory surgery center designed for, and specializing in, outpatient joint replacement surgery. Today, Dr. Moby Parsons of The Knee, Hip and Shoulder Center performed the first outpatient reverse shoulder replacement here using the Exactech GPS (Guided Personalized Surgery) preoperative planning and navigation system.

According to Parsons, "There are very few centers around the country offering surgical navigation for shoulder replacement at an outpatient surgery center. This is the first such case in New England."

Dr. Parsons is one of the design surgeons for the Exactech GPS system. A preoperative CT scan provides a detailed 3D picture of the patient's arthritic shoulder. Images are then imported into a planning software that allows the surgeon to virtually perform the operation, selecting the right implants and their optimal position and orientation relative to the patient's individual anatomy. This plan can then be taken into the operating room where special instruments with trackers synced to a computer and camera system allow real time navigation of the surgical plan.

"Arthritis causes wear and erosion of the socket bone. Our goal during surgery is to restore patient anatomy as best we can. Planning and navigation substantially improve our accuracy compared to conventional instruments," Parsons notes.

Parsons, along with several other design surgeons and engineers, has done extensive research and development on surgical navigation in shoulder replacement and has been using this technology for almost 2 years since it became commercially available. Parsons was also the first surgeon in New Hampshire to perform a reverse shoulder replacement in 2004 and was recently inducted into the American Shoulder and Elbow surgeons, recognizing his expertise in shoulder surgery.

Advances in patient preparation, pain management, anesthetic techniques and surgical techniques now allow many patients to go home the same day as their joint replacement surgery. "Recovery in the comfort of home is both safe and highly satisfying for patients," Parsons notes.

Local Orthopaedic Surgeon to Discuss Advancements in Shoulder Replacement on the World Stage

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- Dr. Moby Parsons, a joint replacement specialist at the Knee, Hip and Shoulder Center in Portsmouth, N.H., helped to pioneer a surgical navigation tool that is now being widely used around the world to improve the results of shoulder replacement. Termed GPS for Guided Personalized Surgery, this technology allows the shoulder surgeon to preoperatively plan the operation on a computer system and then recreate that plan with great accuracy using intelligent surgical instruments that can link the patient's anatomy to the preoperative imaging.

The shoulder is a highly complex joint that undergoes wear and erosion from arthritis and tendon tears. Prior studies have demonstrated that when surgeons can better recreate a patient's native anatomy during reconstructive surgery, outcomes are improved in terms of range of motion, function and implant longevity.

"GPS effectively gives us 3-dimensional, x-ray vision and greatly improves our ability to restore normal anatomy," said Parsons, who has worked extensively with Exactech, Inc. in Gainesville, Fla. to bring this technology into the operating room.

Parsons, along with an international team of surgeons and engineers, helped to develop and validate the GPS system. Recently Parsons has worked with his team to research and refine standards in the preoperative planning process that may lead to better shoulder function, lower complications and improved implant durability.

"Comparing the way different surgeons approach the same case reveals that there is currently a lack on consensus about what is the ideal reconstruction for any given shoulder," Parsons notes. His research aims to narrow the range of acceptable solutions to achieve greater precision during shoulder replacement.

Parsons' research was recently selected for presentation at the International Congress for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery this September in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Hosted every 3 years, this is the largest gathering of shoulder experts in the world and provides an international stage for the team's work. Parsons and the GPS Design Team continue to advance the capabilities of this system through ongoing research and development. Course Director, Dr. Gurvinder Deol, Chief of the Orthopaedic Spine Service at WakeMed Health and Hospitals, Raleigh, N.C., and Clinical Assistant Professor Department of Orthopaedics UNC - Chapel Hill School of Medicine, said the three-day course has been developed specifically to educate Orthopaedic spine and neurosurgery Fellows and Young Surgeons on current topics pertaining to the practice of spine and neurosurgery.

"The course is also designed to assist Fellows with their transition from Fellowship to practice in various settings, whether academic, private, or hospital based," Dr. Deol said.

The format of the course is highly interactive - all lectures include a question and answer session and there are a number of panel discussion, debates and case study presentations over the three days. Fellows and Young Surgeons will also participate in three didactic sessions with all the course sponsors.

The invitation-only annual course will commence with a reception at 5 p.m., November 16, 2018 at the Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco.
