Located in the administration building of the Department of Coroner, the gift shop helps fund the department’s special programs and public relations efforts. Some of these programs include the “Youthful Drunk Driving Visitation Program” (YDDVP). A court ordered alternative sentencing program for youthful offenders, this program takes participants through the Coroner facilities and exposes them to the realistic and traumatic consequences associated with their offense.

The Department also participates in “Every 15 minutes,” this powerful program challenges students to think about drinking, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions when lives are involved.
Started as a T-shirt sale for employees in 1993, popularity of the shirts grew rapidly. Soon people outside the department were clamoring for shirts with the “Body Outline” and more. Today, “Skeletons in the Closet” carries over 50 items, has a web-site for E-commerce and does over a quarter million in sales each year.
Until recently, the Store’s sales consisted of orders processed by mail and walk-in clientele who could only pay by cash or check. Recently, the Department finalized the system for online marketing and E-commerce. This was the first Los Angeles County departmental attempt at an E-Commerce application.
As a model for government agencies to generate revenue, this innovative program has led the way for civic self-reliance. As County budgets get tight and tax revenue shrinks, it is important to look for new ways of generating revenue.
