SAINT LOUIS, Mo., Oct. 22 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The first locally produced television program to air on a commercial channel with 100% of its content in high definition will be broadcast Saturday October 25, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. CDT on KMOV-TV, Channel 4. The thirty-minute television program, produced by Saint Louis-based Illustrated Man, focuses on culinary excellence in the St. Louis area, highlighting top chefs, patrons, restaurant owners and managers, and food critics.

The broadcast of “5-Star: St. Louis’ Top Restaurants in HD” is historically significant because it marks the first local transmission of a 30-minute program that strictly contains only content that originated as a high definition source, edited in digital high definition, and broadcast in HD, including editorial segments, commercials, animated opens and closes.

High definition television is still relatively new to St. Louisans, whose only exposure to HD on local commercial television has been through two local newscasts, where studio anchor segments are shot and broadcast in high definition but video from reporters, file footage, and commercials remain standard definition.

Illustrated Man’s Joe (“Mama”) Mason is the Director and Executive Producer of the broadcast. Mason is also an adjunct professor in the Communication Department at Webster University, where he recently completed writing a curriculum and teaching Webster’s first theory class on high definition television. “I am very excited to help usher in the era of H-D television to St. Louis,” said Mason. “Illustrated Man has a long history of technological firsts, including the first local broadcast of a digitally edited TV show, and we’re thrilled to add this important achievement to the list.”

The show was shot on SONY’s new high definition format XDCAM-HD EX, which records video and audio directly to solid state storage cards, edited on a uncompressed Media 100 HD editing system, and will be broadcast from XDCAM-HD disc.

Viewers can see the show’s premiere Saturday October 25, 2008 on KMOV-DTV 4.1 in high definition, and a simulcast analog broadcast on KMOV-TV Channel 4. A repeat broadcast is scheduled for late night airing on Saturday, October 26, 2008. More information is available by calling (314) 863-7770.
