The fear of self-promotion is a taboo subject in our small business community - no one will discuss it - however, it is the hidden cause behind business failure statistics, says marketing expert Luke Avedon. "It's incredible how devastating 'marketing phobia' can be," says Avedon, a respected authority on small business marketing in Irvine, Calif.

"The fear of self-promotion does not only apply to sales people making cold calls - it can even prevent your average mom-and-pop store owner from engaging in the most tame marketing possible, even something as simple as saying 'hello' to their customers."

Avendon cites a 2009 study by Behavioral Sciences Research Press Inc., which showed that 43 percent of people working in retail stores were too shy to even greet visitors. "The current statistics on small business bankruptcy are misleading," says Avedon. "For example this past July, Statistics Brai, combined all the recent major surveys on business failure. They list lack of market awareness as only the seventh cause of bankruptcy. The problem with these statistics is that fear of self-promotion contributes to almost all the other causes of failure as well. For example, pride - number six - or the number one cause of bankruptcy, 'going into the business for the wrong reasons.' What this really means, the entrepreneur did not go into business to self-promote but to peruse a passion or hobby."

Luckily there is a way to overcome "marketing phobia" using these simple steps provided by Avedon:

The Missouri Valley Community Action Agency is pleased to announce the fifth annual MADE In Missouri State Entrepreneurship Competition (MADE 2014). This year's event will be launched by MVCAA and the Missouri Alliance for the Development of Entrepreneurship in conjunction with Global Entrepreneurship Week.

The MADE competition provides opportunities for new and potential business owners to move their business ideas from concept to a successful business through technical assistance, marketing, advice and networking opportunities plus the ability to compete for investment funding. The competition is open to youth and adult residents of Missouri that want to start or grow businesses in Missouri.

According to the Kauffman Foundation "Global Entrepreneurship Week is the world's largest celebration of the innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare. GEW is more than just an awareness campaign. It is a platform for connection and collaboration-engaging all players along the entrepreneurship spectrum in strengthening ecosystems around the world."

Participants begin the process by answering a questionnaire about their business ideas in the preliminary round. The judges in that round provide tips, suggestions and referrals to strengthen the business. Those participants that advance to the final round will submit a complete business plan with financials by August 1, 2014 and then participate in a trade show complete with an investor style pitch in August. Winners at that round will receive investment funding for their business.

The Missouri Alliance for the Development of Entrepreneurship (MADE) is a coalition of a diverse group of organizations, technical assistance professionals, university, federal and state departments, entrepreneurs and other professionals. The guiding purpose behind its creation was the integration of a coalition dedicated to cultivating entrepreneurship in Missouri by assisting entrepreneurs in creating, financing and managing their new businesses and effecting an environment which supports them. The Alliance is spearheaded by Missouri Valley Community Action Agency of Marshall, Missouri.

Currently this project is funded 75 percent at $15,000 with federal funds and 25 percent at $5,000 by nongovernmental sources for a total amount of $20,000. The federal funds are received from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) provided by the Missouri Department of Social Services, Family Support Division.

"In an age of declining revenue and resources, the ability to reduce our operational expenditures through greater energy efficiency is tremendously important for the fiscal health of the school district. Energy Optimizers, USA, along with strategic partner, SHP Leading Design, has identified areas where enhancements should be made, to the local high school in particular, so the buildings can be more purposeful in their use of energy without compromising a comfortable learning environment for teachers and students. The district is utilizing a funding mechanism through the Ohio School Facilities Commission's House Bill 264 program so that the District does not have to ask for any taxpayer dollars.

Though the total cost of this project exceeds $1.1 million (prior to grants and rebates), the Shawnee Local School system stands to save a staggering $117,560 in annual energy and operations costs. As a result, the District can count on a 9.36 year payback, along with other post-project benefits, including energy management and energy education programming, in addition to increasingly efficient buildings that facilitate a productive and safe academic experience.

Energy Optimizers, USA developed a project for Shawnee Local Schools focused on lighting upgrades, which will significantly reduce electrical consumption across the district, in addition to upgrading existing mechanical equipment and retrofitting boilers. Both Shawnee High School and Middle School, along with Maplewood Intermediate School, Elmwood Primary School and the Bus Garage will all receive top of the line upgrades upon implementation of the energy conservation project including re-lamping and de-lamping fluorescent fixtures, occupancy sensors, exterior fixtures, steam boiler plant retrofits, computer upgrades, and smart controls on kitchen equipment.
