World Open Water Swimming Association’s Final Review: Nyad’s 2013 Cuba to Florida Swim Ratification Denied

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The World Open Water Swimming Association's (WOWSA) Advisory Board reached a decision regarding Diana Nyad's submission for ratification for the Cuba to Florida swim in 2013.

Our decision is rooted in the following considerations:

Integrity in Sport: At the heart of any sport lies its integrity. The rules and regulations established by ratifying bodies, no matter how large or small, are designed to ensure a level playing field for all participants. When these rules are ill-defined or ignored, intentionally or otherwise, it disrespects the achievements that are made under strict adherence to the rules.

Precedent: This decision sets a standard for upcoming athletes and ratifying bodies. By not addressing the provision of ambiguous documents and the creation of an association lacking indicators of authenticity, we may inadvertently suggest that outcomes matter more than the means to achieve them. Such a stance could unintentionally prompt future athletes to stray from established norms, thinking their achievements might eclipse any irregularities.

Documentation and Procedural Failure: During our evaluation, we came across rules from an association whose existence at the time of the swim, or at any point, could not be verified. We found a document with rules that seemed to have been retroactively dated, and there were inconsistent statements from crew members. Observers who play a vital role in recording swim details and ensuring rule compliance, often holding more significance than GPS data, had missing entries for a span of over 9 hours.

In light of these factors, we've chosen to preserve the sport's integrity by denying the ratification of the swim. We've issued a supplementary report that delves deeper into the matter and highlights various inconsistencies and findings, all of which have been publicly shared to ensure transparency.

Moving forward, to ensure the integrity of our sport and prevent such incidents in the future, we commit to the following actions:

* Ensure rules are declared prior to any swim attempt.

* Require strict adherence to established rules and standards in the course of any open water swim attempt.

* Require documentation of adherence to established rules and standards in the course of any open water swim attempt.

* Mandate strict pre-swim planning procedures for all record attempts.

* Collaborate with the community to define clear criteria for legitimate associations in our sport.

* Enhance support for those who share concerns or observations.

* Offer training and ethical guidelines for officials, observers, and participants.

JOEY AND HIS FRIEND WATER: A playful book introducing children and their parents to the idea that everything around us is energy vibrating at different speeds

TORONTO, Ontario -- In Ellen J. Lewinberg's current picture book, "Joey and His Friend Water" (ISBN: 978-0228881698; May 2023), Joey, the main character in the book, finds that he is able to talk to the water in a stream behind his house. Joey finds it hard to believe that he is talking to and learning from Water, and keeps checking the ideas that Water is presenting to him.

"Joey and His Friend Water" introduces children and their parents to the idea that everything around us from people, to plants, to trees, to rocks, is energy vibrating at different speeds. And, in this way, everything in the universe is connected. The importance of the water cycle, mycelium and trees in healing the earth is talked about alongside Maseru Imoto's work on water and the idea that the way in which water reacts to words and emotions has implications for our bodies and our environment. The importance of trees in our environment is stressed and also provides hope for Joey and his friends to do something to help the earth.

Author Ellen J. Lewinberg holds a master's degree in social work and is a trained child and adult psychoanalyst. She worked as a psychoanalyst for many years until a health issue introduced her to energy healing. She was excited by the potential of energy healing, so she trained and currently works as an energy healer.

Ellen realized that young children experience a connection to energy and the unseen, but forget this knowledge as they grow older. She wanted to remind both older children and adults how important it is for themselves and the world around them to remember the connections.

"I am a bioenergy healer and have always been interested in alternative healing, farming and shamanism. I am an avid reader and in recent years have come across more and more information about water and its ability to communicate and respond to our questions and emotions.

"I work with unseen energies in the environment and in people. I know that young children see and hear much that is unseen. Many of them see auras and nature spirits. I want to remind children of all ages that everything is alive and everything is connected, and just because we cannot see something with our eyes does not mean it does not exist and is not important. Imagination is also crucial to our survival.

"I feel it is very important to our survival and that of the earth to remember that the unseen exists and is as important, if not more important, than the seen objective world.

"My hope with this book is to rekindle children's imaginations and to have them understand that everything is connected. One's actions in one area have an effect on every other area. And our imaginations play a vital role in coming up with new solutions to solve our problems here on earth. Trees are crucial in our lives and play an important part in our world. They not only capture carbon, but also provide healing. The Forest Bathing movement from Japan has provided enormous amounts of evidence for this. I wanted children to understand this. They are the adults of tomorrow and will be the ones left with the mess we have made. Some of the solutions are easy if one can only implement them."

"Joey and His Friend Water," Ellen's first picture book, was released in 2023.

Toyota and Hang Media Partner to Offer a Grand New and Connected Way to Watch The HBCU NY Classic From MetLife Stadium

NEW YORK, N.Y -- Toyota, whose first‐ever 2024 Grand Highlander SUV touts "the best views from every row," will be offering fans the best viewing experience when Morehouse College faces Albany State University in the 2nd annual HBCU NY Classic football game at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, September 16. Teaming with HANG, the leading fan-athlete community, Toyota will be hosting a virtual watch party in which fans will mingle with athletes and celebrities in a video chat room while watching the action on TV. Howard University Class of '22 graduate and multiple Emmy nominee Anthony Anderson, and Morehouse alums Isaac Keys, the actor and former NFL star and Edwin Moses, the renowned track and field champion, will watch from a Toyota suite at the game.

Anderson will be flipping the coin at the start of the game, which Toyota is sponsoring for the second straight year. He'll then head up to a skybox to socialize with fellow alums for what will be his fourth HANG party, following two HBCU Celebration Bowl HANGS as well as the Kentucky Derby. Isaac Keys- an ex‐linebacker who appreciates every inch of extra space-will be showcasing the roomier‐than‐ever 2024 Grand Highlander at Toyota's pre‐game YardFest at MetLife.

Joining Anderson, Keys and Moses virtually will be HBCU legend Aeneas Williams (NFL Hall of Famer and Southern University alum) as well as current NFL standouts Grover Stewart (Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle and Albany State graduate), Joshua Williams (Kansas City Chiefs cornerback and Fayetteville State alum) and University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff graduates Terron Armstead (Miami Dolphins four‐time Pro Bowl left tackle) and his protégé, Mark Evans II (New Orleans Saints rookie offensive tackle).

Hundreds of thousands of HBCU supporters are expected to join the HANG either on camera, via text thread or by watching the live stream on YouTube, Facebook Live or Twitch.

"Toyota and HANG are a natural fit," said William Moore, VP/Media Director with Burrell Communications Group. "HANG watch parties create a comfortable space for the whole family to enjoy an amazing experience-just like the new Grand Highlander does. We're thrilled to be hosting an HBCU 'family reunion' where committed alumni, students and parents across the country can join the HBCU NY Classic without ever leaving home, while asking questions and swapping stories with legendary classmates and heroes. There's room to spare in a HANG, and in a Grand Highlander."

"The entire media industry is eager to engage audiences directly, and HANG has been ahead of the pack in understanding the power of eliminating the middleman," said Jon Klein, HANG's co‐founder and CEO and the former president of CNN/US. "We've learned that the glue connecting athletes, fans and brands is love-the fans' love of their teams and favorite players; the athletes' love of getting out from under the helmet to reveal the fully‐formed person inside and everyone's love of products that make their lives easier and more fun."

Black Women in STEM Pen New Children’s Science and Nature Book for HBCU Green Fund’s Publishing Arm Launch

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Fostering their continued efforts to create innovative programs to lead the charge in building a more sustainable future, the HBCU Green Fund, founded by environmental leader, Felicia Davis, has launched a self-titled publishing brand. Their first release, "MSITU: The Old-Growth Forest," is written by three women in STEM, Spelman college students and alumna, Serena Echols, Imani Blue and Nia McKenzie, and illustrated by Niara Powell. Released today, the children's science and nature book takes young readers on a magical journey into an old-growth forest where the native plant species live in perfect balance until their delicate equilibrium is disrupted by outsiders.

"We hope to ignite the imagination of young readers," said Echols, a recent Spelman College graduate. "By weaving messages about teamwork, understanding and the power of nature, we hope to teach young readers about unity, the forest, and the importance of nurturing and protecting the environment."

Illai Kenney, director of HBCU Green Fund comments, "In order to effectively address the issue of Climate Change we must take from African and Native American cultures and instill the interconnectedness of humans, nonhumans and the environment from birth. Small children that learn environmentally-friendly habits like conserving water and recycling will pass it down generations. The fate of the planet is in the hands of our youth so teaching them to care for their natural environment will result in a more sustainable world."

"MSITU is a delightful read that inspires environmental stewardship," adds Davis. "Young readers are introduced to an urban old-growth forest that they can visit to get a better understanding of nature and for memories that will last a lifetime. A special bonus is to learn about the exceptional authors and illustrator of the book."

The HBCU Green Fund publishing group aims to empower and amplify the voices of HBCU authors by providing a platform for them to contribute to the conversation on environmental issues within the HBCU community and beyond. Based in Washington, DC and Atlanta, the HBCU Green Fund is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization working with historically Black colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad to advance sustainability and environmental justice, promote student engagement in green initiatives, and train the next generation of global green leaders.

The organization's Atlanta University Center Clean Energy Fellows Program introduces students to career opportunities in the clean energy sector and connects students with Black entrepreneurs that provide training in renewable energy technologies. Their Eco Spring Break Service-Learning trip enables HBCU students, faculty, and alumni to spend a week in an African village where they can help, and learn from, the vulnerable communities that contribute the least, but are most impacted by the effects of climate change. The West Atlanta Project, funded by a Bezos Earth Fund grant as part of the Greening American Cities Initiative, will enhance access to healthy food, outdoor activities, green transportation options, and education, with a Truly Living Well Farm serving as the project anchor.

"MSITU: The Old-Growth Forest," published in collaboration with JSJ Media, is available for on Amazon.com and wherever books are sold.

Reimagining Parenthood: A Therapist’s Insight Into Weathering Relationship Storms – A Beacon Of Support For Couples In The Journey Of Raising Children

CALGARY, Alberta, Canada -- Relationships, marriage, and parenthood-these beautiful connections often come with their share of challenges. Dan McMillan, a therapist and psychologist based in Alberta, Canada, witnessed the struggles that can plague relationships. He recognized the need to shed light on a common hurtful pattern that couples often find themselves in. This realization led to the creation of his debut picture book, "Badger and Turtle: Face the Storm" (ISBN: 978-0228888116).

The inspiration for this heartwarming tale emerged from McMillan's experiences working closely with couples. He noticed a recurring pattern in their dynamics and decided to simplify it through a story about a badger and a turtle. In the story, the turtle retreats into its shell when stressed, while the badger, though well-meaning, persists in pursuing the turtle with increasing intensity. This tug-of-war between withdrawal and pursuit struck a chord with many couples.

"Badger and Turtle: Face the Storm" (Tellwell Publishing, 2023), follows a pair of friends who learn to work together under stress. This book is meant for not only children to enjoy, but as a tool for families to better understand a common, hurtful pattern that can occur, particularly between parents.

McMillan explains, "This book holds significance in that one of the key factors in parents' mental and emotional wellbeing is the support of their partner whilst the children are young. When their relationship is strong the support is high, but when it is struggling that needed support is low. Statistically, and intuitively, relationship satisfaction is low whilst raising young children, due to the demands of it. "Badger and Turtle: Face the Storm" attempts to focus on bringing needed education to this population at a time it is most relevant, in a culture that isn't telling them this."

The initial years of parenthood present considerable obstacles for couples. The nature of their relationship impacts not just them, but also profoundly shapes the emotional landscape in which their children mature. "Badger and Turtle: Face the Storm" is an important tool to share this educational metaphor via a fun, safe story for all!

South Bay Music Association Presents ‘Frankenstein: Alive in Concert’ in Collaboration with Grand Vision Foundation

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- South Bay Wind Ensemble (SBWE) is thrilled to begin our 2023/2024 season with "Frankenstein: Alive in Concert" on October 28, 2023 at 7 p.m. The classic 1931 film has sound and dialog, but no music. So now, South Bay Winds are providing the music with a 2002 score by composer Michael Shapiro.

We are also featuring another 1931 classic-the performance venue, the Warner Grand Theatre itself! Both "Frankenstein" and the Warner Grand were introduced to Los Angeles in 1931. And we celebrate that history with a medley of Warner Bros. movie favorites from the 1930s to today, performed with a slideshow highlighting the venues illustrious history!

This is one Halloween celebration you won't want to miss! Presented in collaboration with the Grand Vision Foundation.

Under the direction of Steven Allen Fox, South Bay Wind Ensemble is a high-level performing group with the mission of providing semi-professional and dedicated amateur musicians the opportunity to perform challenging and rewarding concerts; and to provide the South Bay community an exceptional concert experience comprised of quality wind band compositions and transcriptions.

Maestro Steven Allen Fox is Principal Conductor for the Los Angeles Film Orchestra and the Golden State Pops Orchestra. He has conducted the San Francisco Symphony, the Silly Symphonies Orchestra, Hollywood Studio Symphony, and the Video Games Live Orchestra.

He made his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut the summer of 2022, conducting "Basil Poledouris, The Music and the Movies." Notable professionals Steven has worked with include Kelsey Grammer, Zooey Deschanel, John Stamos, Rebel Wilson, Taye Diggs, Shoshana Bean, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Alan Silvestri, Richard Sherman, Thomas Newman, John Debney, Michael Giacchino, and Michael Kosarin.

Tickets start at just $15. Visit http://www.southbaywinds.com/ or call 310-433-8774 for tickets and info.
