SUDC Supports Neuropathology Research Fellowship

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- With a $120,000 commitment, the SUDC Foundation is excited to announce the support of “The Moss Pieratt Foundation Memorial Neuropathology Fellowship" at NYU Langone Medical Center’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. Neuropathology is the study of disease of nervous system, which includes the brain and is crucial to our better understanding of Sudden Unexplained Death in Children (SUDC). To date, there are no comprehensive brain studies on victims of SUDC.

The fellowship, made possible through a gift to the SUDC Foundation from the Pieratt family, will be used to support research over the next three years into SUDC, a diagnosis of exclusion given when all known and possible causes of death have been ruled out.

“It is amazing to see the commitment of SUDC families, like the Pieratts, affected by such a devastating tragedy who somehow find the strength and courage to support our mission. To date, SUDC receives no public funding, so gifts like this enable us to not only improve our critical care to bereaved families in the traumatic aftermath of the death of a child, but to pursue groundbreaking research into the underlying causes of SUDC which can lead to its ultimate prevention,” said Laura Crandall, Executive Director of the SUDC Foundation.

The fellowship will reside in the laboratory of Orrin Devinsky, MD, professor in the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, and Director of Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at NYU Langone and the Conformational Disorders laboratory of Thomas Wisniewski, MD, the Lulu P. and David J. Levidow Professor of Neurology and professor of Pathology and Psychiatry at NYU Langone.

“The incidence of SUDC among children 1-18 years of age accounts for about 344 deaths per year, with 202 of the deaths among children ages 1-4 years. SUDC is also the fifth-leading cause of death in children aged 1-4 years in the United States, yet, public health efforts and public funding for its research has been minimal,” said Dr. Orrin Devinsky.

Arline Faustin, MD, the first Fellow to receive the award, will enhance crucial neuropathology efforts by the SUDC Registry and Research Collaborative (SUDCRRC) at NYU Langone. “I am deeply honored to be receiving this fellowship and dedicated to providing comprehensive and novel neuropathology studies in SUDC. The tragedies surrounding SUDC are immense and I am inspired by the many families affected who enable our research at the SUDCRRC to continue and grow,” said Dr. Arline Faustin.

About Moss Pieratt:

Though he was just short of turning fifteen months old at the time of his death, Moss Pieratt made an indelible impression on those he met, whether friends, family or complete strangers. Moss simply delighted in the company of others and truly loved people. Music was a common thread throughout Moss’s life, whether listening to Wee Sing Bible Songs at home (or in the car) or attending music class with friends in Houston. These memories and attributes, above all else, capture the spirit of Moss and how his family and friends remember him to this day.

A little more than a year after the death of John “Moss” Pieratt, Jr., the Pieratt and Jenkins Families jointly decided to start a foundation that would honor the cherished life of Moss, raise funds and awareness to find a cause or cure for the sudden unexplained death in children over the age of twelve months and provide a civic benefit to the citizens of Austin Texas.

Moss’s parents John and Jessica Pieratt along with his grandparents Bobby and Jan Jenkins traveled from Austin to New York City this past Memorial Day weekend to make an official check presentation to staff members of the SUDC Foundation.

About SUDC:

The SUDC Foundation is dedicated to increasing awareness of sudden unexpected deaths in childhood, funding crucial research into the causes and prevention of SUDC, and advocating for the needs of families affected by these tragedies. The SUDC Foundation is the only organization devoted solely to the needs of families and professionals touched by unexplained death in childhood. Since its creation in 2001, formerly as the SUDC Program, it has granted approximately 1.2 million dollars in support and research grants and continues to work toward its mission of a future free from SUDC. Today, it serves over 700 families worldwide and that number continues to grow. For more information on Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood and ways to support the foundation please visit

Fatal Tesla Self-Driving Crash Draws Comment from Sarasota Accident Attorney David Goldman

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Occurring on May 7 in Williston Florida, the first fatal crash, in the US of a self-driving happened and tragically shattered an impressive safety record of the vehicles that use this innovative and experimental technology. While offering the promise of much safer roads with vehicles that are equipped with both automatic accident avoidance technology and fully self-driving modes the wide spread use of such technology while still under development and testing raises many questions.

Attorney David L. Goldman of the Sarasota Florida-based law firm Shapiro Goldman Babboni & Walsh had this to say about the auto industry's move toward self-driving technology, "The 'self-driving' car, like so many revolutionary technological innovations, should never completely replace human responsibility. At least not yet.

"We can all agree that a self-driving car that takes over when a driver falls asleep or automatically brakes to avoid a crash is a good thing that can save lives. Yet when people turn over all responsibility to machines it does raise important legal and ethical questions.

"Can we really rely on technology to make all these decisions for us? It is possible that a self-driving car which always obeys all rules and law can inadvertently create a more dangerous situation for those in the car.

"For example on an interstate or road where all drivers routinely exceed the speed limit would a self-driving car increase the likelihood of being in an accident by driving under the speed limit? The choices made by a programmed computer to always follow the rules of the road can sometimes be unsafe, especially when other motorists routinely do not obey those laws. Yet it is hard to imagine that a manufacturer would ever program a car to break the law and not follow those rules.

"Additionally, many of us are not yet comfortable with surrendering all control of our lives to computers. Was the fatal Tesla self-driving crash the result of a 'glitch'? We read of stories in the news of how a Toyota Camry's accelerator became stuck and killed the driver, or the confusing gearbox in certain Jeeps that causes the vehicle to roll away and resulted in the recent death of a Hollywood actor.

"The bottom line is that while technological innovations can make us safer, at the present time safety may require us to maintain some human control and responsibility when operating a moving vehicle. In the future, this may change. Yet for now staying alert and involved when driving is always the wisest course of action. Better safe than sorry."

About Attorney David Goldman:

Mr. Goldman is a member of the American Association of Justice, The Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the Southern Trial Lawyers Association. Mr. Goldman is an Eagle Member of the Florida Justice Association and The Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, and received the prestigious Legislative Leadership Award by that organization in 1997.

David Goldman has a long-standing commitment to the community and has served as a board member of many civic organizations. He has worked extensively with the Gulf Coast Latin Chamber of Commerce, the Sarasota African-American Chamber of Commerce, Second Chance Last Opportunity and the Westcoast Center for Human Development. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Community Center and has been a director and member of the Endowment Fund of his local synagogue.

Bank of Southern California Provides $5 Million in Financing to OWB Real Estate Holdings, LLC

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Bank of Southern California, N.A. (OTC Pink: BCAL / OTCMKTS:BCAL) announced that it has provided $5 million in financing as senior lender in part of a larger financing arrangement for OWB Real Estate Holdings, LLC. The financing was a combination of bank borrowing, and loans secured through the Federally backed New Market Tax Credit program. The financing provided funds used for the acquisition of land, improvements, and equipment of a shuttered beef slaughter and processing plant in Brawley, Calif., formerly operated by National Beef.

The acquired property includes a 337,000 square foot slaughter and processing facility located on approximately 87 acres. National Beef California, LP closed the plant in April 2014. In addition to the significant loss of local jobs, local cattle ranchers were forced to use processing plants located in central California, Arizona, and Texas which negatively impacted processing costs and yields.

OWB Packers, LLC, a related entity to OWB Real Estate Holdings, LLC will operate the new facility. It plans to reopen for production in Fall 2016. The reopening of the Brawley facility will reestablish a much-needed cost and competitive advantage for local cattle farmers and will effectively help redirect millions of dollars of revenue back into the Imperial Valley. It is anticipated that the reopening of the plant will result in significant job creation over the next several years.

"In preparing for this acquisition, we chose to partner with Bank of Southern California as the senior lender because of their local presence, their ability to quickly understand an extremely complicated transaction, and smoothly interact with our other lenders," commented Eric Brandt, President of One World Beef.

Baldor Specialty Foods and Whole Foods Market Inc. Announce The Baldor Forager Launch at New Williamsburg Store

HUNTS POINT, N.Y. -- Baldor Specialty Foods, the premier ingredient source for NYC's best chefs, today announced a collaboration with Whole Foods Market's Northeast Region that will make the company's selection of unique culinary items available to home cooks for the first time through an in-store, digital kiosk called The Baldor Forager which will launch exclusively on July 26 in coordination with the grand opening of Whole Food Market Williamsburg, located at 238 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Baldor Forager is tailor-made for an era when retailers must compete for the business of an increasingly sophisticated customer.

Despite surging interest, specialty ingredients are rarely available through brick-and-mortar retailers. The inaccessibility of these items is reflected in search results, where two of the terms most commonly associated with a wide array of specialty ingredients are "where to buy" and "substitute."

When The Baldor Forager launches, it will satisfy the growing demand for wild mushrooms, heirloom produce and other items that were once the secret of the metro area's top chefs. The Baldor Forager's digital interface will encourage exploration, discovery and a retail experience focused on customization. Shoppers will be able to place their orders conveniently at The Baldor Forager kiosk and return for in-store pick-up in a day or two on average.

Baldor will curate items based on uniqueness, seasonality and popularity with celebrated restaurants like Estela and Daniel. At launch, offerings will include fresh, water-grown wasabi root, white strawberries and an unusual variety of lavender-hued mushroom from France called a Bluefoot.

Of the project, Baldor CEO TJ Murphy remarked, "High-quality, specialty produce has always been the core of our business. We're really passionate about the items available through The Baldor Forager and can't wait to share them with a new audience."

"At Whole Foods Markets, we're all about constantly improving the customer experience," said Tony Rajaram, Whole Foods Northeast Produce Coordinator. "We know our customers want to try new, special and exotic ingredients, however, it has been a challenge for us to stock fresh, unique produce items that are very fragile and have a short shelf-life. Now, our customers have the ability to order these items and have it delivered to the store, retaining the integrity of the product. The Forager is going to let us accomplish this simply and efficiently through our in-store kiosk."

About Baldor Specialty Foods:

Baldor Specialty Foods is one of the largest importers and distributors of fresh produce and specialty foods in Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Beginning as Balducci's fruit stand in Greenwich Village in 1946, Baldor maintains its original promise - curate and deliver the best and freshest foods in the world. MESA, Ariz. -- Edupoint(R) Educational Systems has been selected by RSU #74 to implement their industry-leading Synergy(R) Education Platform to meet the district's student information, learning management and assessment needs. The agreement provides SAUs the option to license Synergy directly through the Maine DOE at pre-negotiated rates without needing to go through the bid process.

RSU #74, located in central Maine, supports students from the towns of Anson, Embden, New Portland, North Anson and Solon across four campuses. The district has selected Synergy Education Platform to replace its existing PowerSchool system with a solution that is seamlessly integrated from the ground up for full interoperability. RSU #74 will be implementing a rich combination of available Synergy Education Platform components, including Synergy SIS, TeacherVUE(R) with Gradebook, the ParentVUE(R) and StudentVUE(R) portals, LessonVUE(R) Curriculum Management and Synergy Assessment.

With the Synergy platform, RSU #74 will enjoy the most powerful SIS in K-12, comprehensive assessment, learning and curriculum management, analytics, and role-based mobile applications, while benefiting from real-time systemwide data connections that help improve administrative processes and learning outcomes. In addition, by choosing a hosted solution, the district will be able to utilize Synergy in the cloud, which will not only eliminate the need for IT staff to focus on day-to-day hardware maintenance but will also provide continuous monitoring of the district environment, all while still having backend access to the Synergy database.

"We are pleased to welcome RSU #74 as our first Synergy district partner in Maine," says Bob Weathers, Founder & CEO of Edupoint. "Synergy will provide RSU #74 with a single solution for teachers, administrators, students and parents, promoting collaboration and improving student data reporting accuracy and student learning outcomes. We look forward to streamlining the student information and learning management experience for RSU #74 and future Maine SAUs as we continue our partnership with the State to provide Synergy in a cost-effective manner to help improve student success."
