Move For Hunger and Hilldrup Renew Partnership to Fight Hunger as Food Insecurity Levels Rise In U.S.

RED BANK, N.J. -- Move For Hunger, a national non-profit organization, and Hilldrup, a fourth generation family-owned moving & storage company, announced today that they have renewed their partnership to fight hunger and reduce food waste in the United States. Since 2011, Hilldrup's 10 regional branches (Dulles, Richmond, Stafford (VA), Greenville (SC), Charlotte & Durham (NC), Forestville & Capitol Heights (MD), Atlanta, and Orlando) across the Southeast have rescued more than 64,500 lbs. of food and have provided 53,800 meals to people who are facing hunger.

As members of the Move For Hunger network, Hilldrup and their multiple branches educate their customers about the issues of hunger and food waste and encourage them to donate their unopened, non-perishable food items on moving day. Then, their moving crews volunteer to deliver the donations to a local food bank or pantry at no additional cost.

Hilldrup also provides Move For Hunger with additional support by organizing food drives and by volunteering to rescue food from large events, like marathons. Most recently they assisted Move For Hunger's COVID-19 relief efforts, when their Atlanta branch delivered 100 cases of donated GoGo SqueeZ product to Fulton County Schools in Alpharetta, Georgia.

"Hilldrup has been a valuable partner of ours for the past 8 years and their renewed support for the year ahead has never been more critical than it is right now," said Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger. "The COVID-19 Pandemic has increased the need for emergency food nationwide. Food banks and pantries are facing an unprecedented demand, and we are so grateful that Hilldrup remains committed to helping us fight hunger."

"We are thrilled to partner with Move for Hunger for the ninth year," said Jordan McDaniel Hinkebein, Marketing Director, Hilldrup. "They have created such an invaluable network of moving companies to assist in one of the greatest needs of our nation - food insecurity. We are honored and proud to be a partner with them and to continue to help our local communities with these food efforts, through customer donations, employee or community food drives and beyond!"

To date, Move For Hunger's network of more than 1,000 moving companies, more than 1,500 multi-family apartment communities, and many of the world's leading relocation management companies has collected and delivered nearly 17.8 million pounds of food - providing nearly 15 million meals - to food banks and pantries across the United States and Canada.

St. Louis Firm Mentoring Complete, Associated Colleges of Illinois Partner, Offer Career Mentoring Program for College Seniors

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- A St. Louis firm, Mentoring Complete (https://www.mentoringcomplete.com/), has partnered with Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) (https://acifund.org), a Chicago nonprofit, to offer a Career Mentoring Program to match Illinois college seniors with business mentors. The mentors help guide the seniors as they launch careers.

Funded in part through a National Venture Fund grant from the Council of Independent Colleges (https://www.cic.edu), Washington, D.C., the new mentoring program will be available through career services offices at ACI's 27 member colleges and universities (https://acifund.org/member-college-directory/).

ACI provides scholarships and emergency financial aid to first-generation, low-income students attending private colleges and universities in Illinois, plus career services and peer mentoring for students. Mentoring Complete has considerable experience in successful business and corporate mentoring programs. Clients include Enterprise Holdings, New York Power Authority, OhioHealth and Reach International.

"The design of the program creates consistent interactions, so the mentor and mentee have opportunities to assess how things are progressing, and make adjustments along the way," said Aaron Adams, partner and mentoring expert with Mentoring Complete. The students and their career mentors can also discuss areas of development most important to the student, and the seniors develop a better understanding of how to translate what they have learned in the classroom into the workplace, he added. In some cases, mentors can help mentees find future career opportunities.

"The Career Mentoring Program helps get college seniors engaged at a high level with mentors in their chosen career fields, and helps them begin successful careers and be productive citizens," said Mick Weltman, ACI executive director. Career mentoring complements other components of ACI's College-to-Career program offerings, he said. They include Work and Life Skills Boot Camps, and ACI's Career Development Conference and Career Expo, which help students prepare for careers; micro-internships through Parker Dewey, which help students get valuable work experience while in college; and ACI's job-postings page (https://acifund.org/jobs-and-internships/), which announces positions available for alumni of ACI-affiliated schools.

For the fall term, career mentoring dates are Sept. 15, 2020 to Dec. 15, 2020. Spring program dates are Jan. 15, 2021 to April 30, 2021. ACI will work with career services teams at member colleges and universities to publicize the new program and recruit mentees, who will be placed with potential mentors as available.

ACI will also reach out to corporate sponsors and strategic partners to recruit experienced mentors. People interested in becoming mentors should apply though the career mentoring website (https://www.get.mentoringcomplete.com/aci-business-mentor). Mentors will be paired with mentees for one semester based on availability.

About ACI:

Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) is a collaboration of 27 private, independent colleges and universities, representing more than 70,000 students. Established in 1952, ACI supports member colleges and universities by advancing independent liberal arts and sciences education and helping underserved students succeed in college, career and life. The organization raises funds for scholarships, peer mentoring and emergency financial aid, and it provides member services such as professional development conferences and college-to-career seminars and events. Pets and Fireworks – Tips to Keep Pets Happy and Safe on July 4th

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Every Independence Day, shelters are filled with lost and injured pets. The Sacramento SPCA is recommending the following tips to keep your pet safe so you can all enjoy a happy and safe Fourth of July.

* Make sure pets are microchipped and the chip registration (owner's contact information) is up to date.

* Ensure pets are wearing a properly fitting collar with ID tags.

* As a backup plan, write your phone number on your pet's collar with a sharpie marker.

* Provide physical and mental stimulation with a walk or playtime during cooler morning hours - it can help pets stay calm in the evening.

* During peak firework hours the week surrounding July 4th, bring all pets indoors, offer their favorite toy or a stuffed Kong, and add some ambient noise (such as television or radio) to distract them.

Whether the plan is to visit friends for your holiday festivities or stay close to home, it's important to remember our furry friends do not enjoy the celebration as much as humans do.

"Every year, animal shelters are inundated with pets that panicked at the sound of fireworks and fled into the night, winding up lost, injured or killed," said Kenn Altine, Sacramento SPCA CEO. "By following these few simple tips, pet owners can keep their pets safe and sound at home and avoid unnecessary worry, reclaim fees and heartbreak."

What Do I Do If I Find a Stray Animal?

The Sacramento SPCA is encouraging community members to follow these Found Animal Tips to help healthy stray animals find their way home; including checking the animal for an ID tag and microchip (which can be scanned at a vet's office, shelter or pet store), asking around the neighborhood, making flyers or posting online in local lost and found groups or on neighborhood specific social media platforms.

For sick or injured animals found in Sacramento City, residents should call 311 and in Sacramento County, call 916-875-5000.

"It's been long thought that bringing animals to shelters was the best way to help them, but we now realize that most of the time, they can be easily reunited with their family by staying near where they were found,' said Altine. "That leaves the shelter with room for the animals who really do need our help - those whose owners can no longer keep them or animals that are sick or injured."

The Sacramento SPCA is the only shelter in the region offering pet owners a place to take their beloved animals when they have nowhere else to turn; regardless of age, breed, health condition or behavior. Though the Sacramento SPCA had to adapt their services due to the COVID-19 health crisis, they have continued to say yes to the animals and have expanded public access to their lifesaving programs by offering appointment-based services.

Founded in 1892, the Sacramento SPCA has been providing homeless animals with individual comfort, shelter, and love for more than 128 years. They provide compassionate medical care to tens of thousands of animals annually and offer a variety of programs and services designed to keep people and pets together for life.

Doggy Dashing on June 27 – Walking Together to Save Lives

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento SPCA is hosting their annual Doggy Dash this Saturday, June 27, 2020 - and this year is sure to offer more than just another walk in the park.

Now celebrating its 27th anniversary, the Doggy Dash has grown into Northern California's largest 2K/5K dog walk and pet festival - with a goal this year to raise $185,000 in registrations and donations to support the lifesaving programs that help animals and the people who love them in the Sacramento region. Donations from last year's Doggy Dash helped the Sacramento SPCA provide direct care to more than 35,000 animals in 2019.

With restrictions placed on large groups events due to the COVID-19 health crisis, the Sacramento SPCA shifted its largest community event and fundraiser of the year from a gathering at Sacramento's iconic William Land Park to a virtual experience.

"Just because we can't walk side by side, doesn't mean we can't still walk together to save lives," said Dawn Foster, Sacramento SPCA Marketing and Communications Director.

An estimated 5,000 animal lovers usually gather at William Land Park for this special event each year, with and without their canine companions - to raise funds for animals at the Sacramento SPCA and enjoy pet-friendly vendors, demonstrations, contests, food trucks, beer garden, local entertainment and more!

"During these challenging times, when other shelters have closed their doors and cancelled events, the Sacramento SPCA has found ways to adapt and continue saying 'yes' to the community's animals and the people who love them," said Foster. "Saving lives isn't cancelled - and neither is the Doggy Dash."

Pet enthusiasts living far and wide are encouraged to join the Sacramento SPCA on June 27, 2020 from their neighborhoods, parks and trails for the 2k/5k walk and also connect online to share photos and enjoy the event's live broadcast and pet festival.

For the first time in the Doggy Dash's 27-year history, participation will not be limited by one's zip code. "By participating in our own communities, people and dogs who would not normally be able to participate at William Land Park, can now do so," added Foster.

The virtual event will be kicked off LIVE on the shelter's Facebook page at 9 a.m.; participants will hear from the Sacramento SPCA's CEO, Kenn Altine, meet adoptable animals, say hello to some very special community partners, learn more about how the Sacramento SPCA has continued to save lives during the shelter-in-place and witness a very special kick-off to the 2K/5K walk.

Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SacSPCA/

Doggy Dashers are encouraged to share photos and video of them and their dogs walking and participating in the event's activities throughout the day using the hashtag #dashreleashed.

As the only full-service 100% non-profit animal shelter in the Sacramento region, the Sacramento SPCA relies on donations from individuals, businesses and foundations to support their work. They are local, independent, and do not receive funding from state or local government agencies.

Supporting this year's Virtual Doggy Dash by walking, sharing or donating will help Sacramento SPCA continue to give more than shelter to the animals who need it most.

Dogs Trapped in Hot Cars – The Sacramento SPCA is Helping Keep Pets Safe

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- As the Sacramento region heads into an extremely hot week, one local animal welfare organization is taking action to help animals left in hot cars. The Sacramento SPCA is providing thermometers to all animal control officers in Sacramento County in an effort to prevent animals from suffering and dying in hot cars and to hold those who caused this suffering accountable.

Each year police and animals control officers in our community respond to hundreds of calls about animals - most often dogs - left in hot cars. These are reported by Good Samaritans who hear the animals crying for help or, in the worst cases, notice an animal that has passed out or stopped breathing. California law now allows these Good Samaritans to break into the vehicle under certain circumstances.

"We need the community to know that there are consequences to leaving an animal in a car - no matter the reason," said Kenn Altine, CEO of the Sacramento SPCA. "The consequences for the animal are horrific," he said, "but too often the person is not held accountable."

Altine said the thermometers, which are certified tested and calibrated, will allow the animal control officers to accurately capture the ambient air temperature in the vehicle as part of their evidence collection.

"By having a reliable and accurate recording of the temperature using a certified thermometer, we can better hold the people accountable for their actions," said Sacramento County DDA Hilary Bagley-Franzoia. The Sacramento County District Attorney handles cases of animals left in cars.

They've already had several cases this year, including an animal who was left in a car where the temperature reached 130 degrees, causing the animal to have seizures, neuropathy and to bleed through its skin and paws. Forty-five minutes after the animal was freed from the car, its internal temperature was still 108 degrees (normal body temperature for dogs and cats is 101 to 102.5 degrees).

Mental Health Awareness License Plate Winning Design

LAFAYETTE, Calif. -- BeingwellCA, a California 501(c)(3), submitted the initial design for the Mental Health Awareness License Plate to California Department of Education for DMV review.

The winning design was selected after a statewide contest held for high school students. Winning artist Anshuree Banerjee took her passion for art to create meaningful imagery for the new Mental Health California license plate.

"I wanted a design that clearly included California as part of the solution and was positive about mental health," said Anshuree, a student at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, California.

"This license plate has the potential of raising millions of dollars for student mental health which are so desperately needed in the post Covid-19 school environment. And it does it without raising taxes," said Graham Wiseman, CEO of BeingwellCA.

"Wellness Centers with Caring Adults have proven to be a key in early intervention. A 12-year University of Michigan study reported a reduction of youth deaths by 660%! We need these in all schools." (JAMA Psychiatry, Feb, 2019)

California Senator Steven Glazer (7th District) is the author of SB1223 (4COLIN) that authorizes the Department of Motor Vehicles to issue a specialized license plate for Mental Health Awareness. Funds raised by the Mental Health License Plate will go to the California Department of Education for Mental Health Wellness Centers in California Schools. Due to Covid-19, this bill will carry over to 2021.

About BeingwellCA:

Graham & Caroline Wiseman founded BeingwellCA after the tragic loss of their son to suicide at age 15. With Gail Miller, they are now a leading voice to address the alarming rates of anxiety, depression and suicide ideation in our state. Some districts report depression rates amongst female juniors of 50% with serious suicide ideation of 20% in past year (CalSCHLS, 2018).

Suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death for ages 10-24 (2017 CDC WISQARS).

BeingwellCA's mission is to reduce anxiety, depression and suicide ideation in our youth. We do this by providing schools, parents, students and communities with tool kits and evidence-based strategies for Wellness Centers to provide mental health immediate support.
