The Everest Foundation Helps to Fund Medical Residency Positions and Fund Research at Teaching Hospitals

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- It has been an enormously successful year for almost two dozen Everest Foundation Scholars who are actively working on research projects for submission and hopeful publication in esteemed medical journals as well as starting their medical residency training in coveted ACGME Accredited residency programs across the U.S.

The Everest Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports medical research, domestic and global health initiatives and even residency positions with a number of U.S medical schools and community-based hospitals. With a mission statement that spells out its mandate: "Part of the Cure," The Everest Foundation has a laser focus on the advancement of (GME) Graduate Medical Education during these exciting and challenging times for U.S. healthcare.

This year, two distinguished Everest Foundation Scholars were recognized for their extraordinary gifts. Dr. R. Sahni, a medical graduate from India, was awarded "Resident of the Year" at the University of Alabama SOM Internal Medicine Residency Program; and Dr. Milad Modarresi was awarded first place in the state of West Virginia for his research poster presentation at the 12th Annual West Virginia Geriatric Society Scientific Assembly.

Sahni has also been featured in a nationwide webinar for Residents Medical which platformed his commitment to gain the skills and experience for residency while Modarresi was later highlighted for a second time as a researcher with West Virginia Congressman, Evan Jenkins, at a conference focused on opioid use and problems facing the state.

Sahni had been an Everest Foundation Scholar for two years overseeing research projects and publications at both New York's Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the James A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, respectively.

Initially, having trouble obtaining a medical residency, Sahni was recommended to The Everest Foundation by Residents Medical, an educational company in California that specializes in preparing medical students and graduates a strong CV necessary for residency by making them prolific researchers and clinicians. This pathway has worked for many Everest Foundation Scholars throughout the years, including Sahni. The pathway worked for Sahni who matched in SOAP last year, in part due to his excellent research work at Icahn and at Burn Schools of Medicine, respectively.

This year, Modarresi matched into a General Surgery program at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, where he was doing his lauded research work as an Everest Foundation Scholar and Fellow in Orthopedics.

It's no secret that research publication in any specialty often ranks residency candidates higher when applying for GME positions, according to many program directors.

"Part of our mission is to support the 'six core competencies' of the ACGME with all of our initiatives and Scholars, so we hope to continue to make a positive impact on GME programs across America," Mrs. Agata Everest, chairperson of The Everest Foundation, says.

Mrs. Everest, a former healthcare clinician from Europe, underscores that U.S. and foreign medical graduates (FMGs) know that the application competition for residency is getting tougher and tougher.

"Each year, nearly 1,000 U.S. medical school graduates and approximately 11,000 foreign medical graduates are not matching into residency," Mrs. Everest says. "And nearly 5,000 of the more than 43,000 applicants, mostly FMGs, are not getting any interviews at all after applying into the National Residency Matching Program."

Every year, The Everest Foundation helps many of its research scholars and fellows into residency as they work to navigate these daunting numbers. Projections for the years ahead look equally challenging. So, graduate medical students and graduates who conduct real paradigm changing research and clinical work with The Everest Foundation are reaping positive benefits.

"Dr. Sahni and Dr. Modarresi are celebrated success stories. They are an inspiration to our current Everest Scholars," Mrs. Everest says. "We're trying to improve patient care with better research and prepared physicians as a foundation, but we're also happy that we can assist many of our fellows become board certified doctors by doing residency."

By supporting medical residency training programs, our foundation addresses both the great "Bottleneck" of medical school graduates looking to land a medical residency slot and address the doctor shortage in America. We get to see many of our Everest Foundation Scholars and Fellows become board certified doctors, all the while supporting Residency Training Programs and Graduate Medical Education at Schools of Medicine who don't always get all the support they need.

About The Everest Foundation:

The Everest Foundation is engaged in clinical, research at various U.S. medical schools and ACGME teaching hospitals across the country. Nationally Renowned Research Doctor Will Discuss His New Hopes, Methods, and Successes with Treating Rare Children’s Cancers on Nov. 5, 2017

LAKE FOREST, Calif. -- Jareds Juggernaut To Cure Sarcoma, a non-profit which funds researchers of body sparing cancer treatments targeted for rare children's cancers, today announced an event which features Dr. Charles Keller as the keynote speaker, which will take place on November 5, 2017 in the Sun and Sail Club in Lake Forest, Calif.

While many types of cancers have had improved survival outcomes over recent years due to new drugs and other clinical innovations, there are certain cancers that have not progressed appreciably in their survival rates or in developing new methodologies and drug protocols for decades.

Unfortunately, these cancers primarily affect children and young adults. Since the number of patients diagnosed with these deadly diseases annually is small, compared with other types of cancers, such as breast, prostate and colon, they are treated as "orphan" diseases which translate into less emphasis by the drug companies and medical establishment in finding treatments and cures for these forms of cancer.

It is therefore left to dedicated researchers and grass roots support groups to "pick up the slack" and help those kids afflicted with these deadly diseases by finding new drug protocols and techniques to stop the cancers from metastasizing at worst or to stop the cancer cells from developing at best.

Dr. Charles Keller founded the Children's Cancer Therapy Development Institute in Oregon to bridge scientific discovery and the initiation of clinical trials.

Charles's research focuses on the development of more effective, less toxic therapies for childhood cancers. His special interest is advanced disease that has spread beyond the initial location of the cancer. Charles co-chairs the brain tumor developmental therapeutics committee (CNS-DVL) of the Children's Oncology Group and is a member of the soft tissue sarcoma (STS) committee of Children's Oncology Group.

He recently completed a 5-year rotation as a Standing Member of the National Cancer Institute NCI-I Study Section. Charles has authored over 80 scientific publications and is a recognized expert in the biology of childhood sarcomas and the preclinical investigation of childhood cancers. Charles is also a co-founder of First Ascent Biomedical, a company developing personalized medical approaches to therapy for canine and human solid tumor patients.

Dr. Keller will be speaking on November 5, 2017 at the Sun and Sail Club on Lake Forest Drive in Lake Forest California. He will be discussing his research objectives and some of the resultant outcomes and successes. His keynote speech will be part of an event that will go from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Entertainment and refreshments will be available as well as dancing will be encouraged.

The cost for the event is $28 per person with all proceeds going to cancer research. Since the sponsor is a non-profit 501(c)(3), the ticket price will be tax deductible.

About Jareds Juggernaut To Cure Sarcoma (JJCUR):

JJCUR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit which was started after the founders' 26 year old son, Jared Steven Grossman, died after fighting Rhabdomyosarcoma for five years. The protocol that Jared was given was one that was in place for twenty years and had a less than 20 percent survival rate for his stage of the disease. We found that the chemo and radiation was almost as devastating to Jared's body as the cancer itself and, after he died, we vowed that we would work hard to support researchers who were innovative and looked for body sparing methods to fight cancers.

In Florida, 87 Animals Rescued in a Massive Animal Hoarding Case

FREEPORT, Fla. -- Over the past week, Alaqua Animal Refuge, a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary located in Northwest Florida, has been leading a case in Vernon, Florida where a large number of animals were left to the care of Alaqua after their owner passed away.

The woman, a breeder of Great Pyrenees, once bred award winning dogs but over the past 10 years her physical health had deteriorated to the point that she was confined to a wheelchair. The dogs began a downward spiral of their physical condition, and the elaborate yards built to hold them no longer did. Uncontrolled breeding and lack of care for the dogs had been going on for years and the scene was deplorable.

Thirteen of the dogs and 10 of the cats - the critical, old, and young - were brought to Alaqua for urgent care. On Monday, the remaining 55 dogs and nine cats were rescued and it was no small feat. Alaqua Animal Refuge was joined by 12 rescue groups and organizations from across the United States to aid in this monumental and impressive rescue effort. After a week of extensive planning and coordination, it took a total of 45 people, all day, to get these massive dogs out of the house and off the property to safety.

Alaqua Founder Laurie Hood said, "I am personally grateful to the Lucky Puppy Rescue who played a key role and was instrumental in providing essential daily food, water, and care for these dogs until they all could be rescued. It was important to create a relationship with these dogs and connect with them early to reduce their stress."

After the dogs are thoroughly rehabilitated, they will be available for adoption through one of the rescue groups that assisted in this huge endeavor. Many of the rescue groups specialize in larger breeds, especially Great Pyrenees, and they always have many gentle giants in need of loving homes.

Rescue organizations that assisted in the relief effort included The Humane Society of the United States; The Lucky Puppy Rescue; Florida State Animal Response Coalition; Big Bend Disaster Animal Response Team; Great Pyrenees Club of America; Tri-County Animal Rescue; Big Fluffy Dog Rescue; Tallahassee Big Dog Rescue; Leon County Humane Society; Great Pyrenees Club of Western Pennsylvania Rescue; Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team; and Florida Great Pyrenees Rescue & Club.

"I was proud to offer advice and on-site assistance to Alaqua Animal Refuge in the rescue of the Great Pyrenees," said Laura Bevan, the director of the Southern Region for the Humane Society of the United States. "These dogs have been living in filth with little human contact or medical care for a long time, and it is only because of Laurie Hood's persistence that these dogs are now on their journey to become the beloved companion animals they were always meant to be."

"The team of volunteers, rescue groups, and staff that Laurie put together did a phenomenal job of humanely removing the dogs from the property and evaluating them for transport to the facilities where they will be rehabilitated. Overall, the rescue couldn't have been done any better," said Bevan.

Terri Sandlak, who is the director for the Florida Great Pyrenees Rescue, concurred that the rescue was "unbelievably organized, and is a good example of what other organizations should follow when similar situations happen again."

The presence and support of local law enforcement is always an invaluable one, especially in cases such as this. With animal hoarding and abandonment cases, among others, local officials' involvement is key. Animals' lives, both present and future, depend on it, as does future laws protecting animals against neglect, cruelty, or hoarding.

"We witnessed an amazing effort to care for these animals, who were in desperate need. As we arrived on scene, it was apparent that Alaqua Animal Refuge had a strategic plan put in place to rescue these animals in the most effective and safest way possible," said Washington County Sheriff Kevin Crews. "The dedication, skill, and knowledge that this organization has could not be more evident."

This was certainly a team effort, based on a passion and love for these majestic animals. From the first dog that was taken out of the house and walked on a leash to his transport to the last one that had to be carried out because he could barely walk-their eyes told their life stories. It filled many of the volunteers that were onsite with tears, with smiles, and with love and appreciation for the human spirit wanting to help.

Although an incredibly heartbreaking situation, including the loss of life of the dogs' owner, this massive rescue ended on a positive note, as they are getting their second chance-at life and to find a loving permanent home, again.

The rescue of these 87 animals has incurred an enormous amount of expenses, especially in medical evaluations and treatments. The daily work at Alaqua Animal Refuge, including large rescues such as this, could not be done without the support of our community and beyond.

About Alaqua Animal Refuge:
Alaqua Animal Refuge is a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary, located in the panhandle of Florida. A member of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, Alaqua believes that every abused, neglected and homeless animal deserves a second chance. Committed to providing protection, shelter and care to animals in need, this private, 501(c)(3) non-profit Refuge also offers a full-service adoption center, educational outreach, and community programs that extend far beyond their geographic location.

Since its inception in 2007, Alaqua has become a recognized leader in animal rescue, welfare, cruelty prevention, and advocacy. Alaqua is currently in the midst of a relocation and expansion capital campaign to build a one-of-a-kind facility - the first in the United States - on 100 donated acres. The new facility and sanctuary will allow Alaqua to continue all of the important work that is done now, as well as be an educational and training center to empower others to help animals and recreate the model worldwide.

The mission of The Mugadi Foundation is to help children and young adults around the world, particularly in the Global South. The Mugadi Foundation was founded by Michael Odokara-Okigbo when he was 14. Mugadi (which means "I will live" in the Igbo language) is a 501(c)(3) organization created in 2004 to help pay for the school fees granted to orphanages located in Lagos, Nigeria. The foundation was established due to a trip he made with his mother to an HIV/AIDS orphanage in November, 2004.

Odokara-Okigbo was shocked with how much trouble they had finding for education, but most interestingly to him, he was surprised to see how similar these children were to him. When he returned, he decided to make a difference in those children's lives, he created a photo exhibition of fourteen stories, and showed it in hospitals, schools and museums. It was a huge success, and prompted him to create the Mugadi Foundation.

Chef Sean Brock Honored by Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America for Awareness Efforts

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA), the nonprofit dedicated to raising research funds for and awareness of the neuromuscular disease myasthenia gravis (MG), announces that Chef Sean Brock has graciously volunteered to be an Awareness Ambassador for the organization.

The highly acclaimed chef, most known for his Southern culinary creations and his work on The Mind of a Chef, has spoken out about the challenges he faced in getting diagnosed and managing MG, and has begun planning a series of exclusive dinners aimed at raising funds for the MGFA's mission.

"I clearly had the symptoms of MG, yet it took some of the best doctors in the world 18 months to confirm my diagnosis, and there's no cure," said Brock. "Unless we can fund research that can lead to a cure, we, myself and others with MG, continue to manage the symptoms in the best way that we can."

Brock experienced double vision that made it difficult to walk and impossible for him to drive, and this weakness of his eyes also caused one eyelid to droop so it was nearly closed while the other became stuck wide open. This was not only uncomfortable for dealings with customers, but also made it painful to be in the sunlight, and contributed to further vision issues. While a drooping eyelid is among the classic symptoms of the disease, Brock was among the 10 - 20 percent of patients who have the disease but test negative for MG in bloodwork, making it a challenge for physicians to diagnose.

Brock responded well to treatment, a clear sign that he truly has MG, but fears that his condition could one day worsen, and hopes that research will be ahead of his MG.

"MG is a very challenging condition because of the profound impact it can have on muscle strength and daily activities that most of us take for granted. It is particularly hard to have a disease most people have never heard of -- and for which there is no cure," shared Nancy Law, chief executive officer, MGFA. "We applaud Chef Brock for giving a voice to other patients with MG who have experienced similar frustrations and barriers to diagnosis."

Chef Brock will continue to share his experiences, and more information about his fundraising efforts will be available on http://www.myasthenia.org/ in the coming months.

About Myasthenia Gravis (MG):
Myasthenia gravis is a disorder causing extreme muscle weakness that can impact a person's ability to see, eat, walk - and even to breathe or to smile. The condition is rare and non-contagious, and affects people of all races, genders and ages. In MG, the body's immune system attacks the connection between the nerves and the muscles, which limits the ability of the brain to control muscle movement.

The degree of muscle weakness can vary from person to person, and day to day. Due to the high number of misdiagnoses, the precise number of people with MG is unknown, but MG is estimated to affect approximately 100,000 Americans. There are effective treatments for most, but not all with MG. There is currently no cure.

‘C. diff. Science’ Honors Professionals Dedicated to Clostridium difficile Research and Development

TAMPA, Fla. -- The C Diff Foundation hosts "C. diff. Science" on Sept. 14 to honor professionals dedicated to the scientific research and development in the Clostridium difficile (C. difficile, C. diff.) community worldwide, chaired by Professor Simon M. Cutting, PhD, of Molecular Microbiology at Royal Holloway, University of London.

The free live webinar will take place from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. ET, Sept. 14, 2017.

Professor Cutting, Event Chair and guest presenter, shares the platform with seven fellow scientists focused on their contributions involving the most common pathogen identified, and leading healthcare-associated infection (HAI) - Clostridium difficile.

C. difficile infections can be acquired and diagnosed in infants and across the life-span with a higher risk involving our senior citizens and that is why it is imperative to learn about a C. difficile infection, its most common symptoms, the treatments available, and environmental safety products to prevent the spread of this spore-bacteria and to help reduce C. difficile infection recurrences.

"On September 14th fellow professionals in the C. diff. community, and those who share a common interest, will have the opportunity to gain knowledge from scientists around the globe who have dedicated their professional lives researching and developing new concepts, new theories, and the progress towards a better understanding - pursuing future developments in Clostridium difficile (a.k.a., C. difficile, C.diff.) infection prevention, treatments, and environmental safety products worldwide," states Nancy C Caralla, Executive Director.

About the C Diff Foundation:

The C Diff Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, founded in 2012 by Nancy C Caralla, a nurse diagnosed and treated for Clostridium difficile (C. diff.) infections.

Through her own journeys and witnessing the passing of her father diagnosed with sepsis secondary to C. difficile infection involvement, Nancy recognized the need for greater awareness through education, the research being conducted by the government, industry, and academia and better advocacy on behalf of patients, healthcare professionals, and researchers worldwide working to address the public health threat posed by this devastating infection.
