EOarts Brings Together Extraordinary International Talents From Different Creative Industries For A Show In Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- On March 18, 2023, The Espejo Organization for the Arts (EOarts) will present THE EXTRAORDINARIES, an exhibition that brings together some of the best foreign-born talents working in the American creative industry. "The goal of the show is to highlight the quality and innovation that imported talent brings to the cultural and creative landscape of the US," said Kika Espejo, Director of EOarts.

The show, which takes its title from the denomination of the visa and permanent resident status awarded to professionals of extraordinary ability in the field of the arts, includes an array of creative practices from immigrant artists from all over the world.

"Creatives who have obtained Extraordinary Ability immigration statuses have demonstrated their original contribution to their field but don't often get much visibility, nor does the wide public recognize what an important role imported talent plays in the development of our country's creative industry," Espejo explains.

This show presents a survey of the works that a selection of these professionals are currently developing, bringing together creators of many different industries to promote and bring awareness to the significance that immigrant talents play in the development of the American cultural field.

The show will count on the participation of accomplished and award-winning international artists and creative professionals. In the area of visual arts, the exhibition will present the works of Brazilian painter and illustrator Niege Borges, Japanese sand artist Naoshi, Lebanese mix media artist Hildos, Hongkongese artist and milliner Penny Chu, Iranian Illustrator Elham Ataeiazar, and Spanish painters Amaia Marzabal and Aida Miro. Macedonian visual artist Mensur Bojda, Ukranian surface and texture artist Maksym Kazarin, and Indian multidisciplinary artist Kuldeep Singh are also taking part in this show.

In the area of photography, the show will include three distinguished professionals, including the fashion and documentary photographer from Sweden, Izabella Demavlys, the Canadian fine art and wedding photographer Erica Reade, and the boudoir and fine arts photographer from Mexico, Gaspar Marquez, who is also involved in the production of the show.

Additionally, the event will include the works of exceptional creatives in the field of design, such as English graphic designer Crissy Bogusz, Chilean art director Nicolas Mardones, Indian urban designer Uttara Ramakrishnan, Spanish architectural designer Ana Avanzini, and the Czech 3D designers Johana & Maxim Kroft. In the area of fashion, the show will also count on the works of Chinese creative director Churou Wang, Japanese costume designer Saori Mitome, and Chinese bespoke tailor and designer Yuecen Cai.

Adding to the exhibition and organized with the support of Brazilian producer Roberta Fernandes, the event will also host two special performances and presentations. Spanish actor and producer Edu Diaz will present an excerpt from his successful play Fantastic Mr. S, recently presented at the United Solo Festival. The Brazilian editor and astrologist, Larissa Xavier, will also participate in the show with a presentation of her collaborative project "New York Women & The Zodiac."

"THE EXTRAORDINARIES is a one-of-its-kind event that intends to go beyond the mere experience of a traditional art show. Multidisciplinary shows have the ability to bring together works from many fields into a conversation, allowing not only to create intrinsic connections between pieces but to generate narratives that expand beyond the borders of each medium," says Colombian Guest Curator Julian Montenegro.

The exhibition will open to the public on Saturday, March 18, 2023, between 6:30 and 8:30 pm, at Meadow Studios (35 Meadow Street) in Brooklyn.

Black History Month – Teaching Black Children The Value Of Building Wealth, Saving Money, and Financial Literacy

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- On the last day of Black History Month, nationally recognized Black Producer and Creator Joe Young, Jr., in partnership with JPMorgan Chase, will launch a print and digital comic book teaching financial literacy to students featuring "KEMET, BIG TIME SAVER."

On February 28, 2023, 10 a.m. at P.S. 171 Patrick Henry Preparatory school in Harlem, Principal Dimitres Pantelidis, will host a Black History Month event for fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students to celebrate the conclusion of the month.

Students will officially meet KEMET, a ten-year-old time-traveling comic character who goes back to meet African-American historical firsts, legends, and inventors, both living and deceased, who share with KEMET what they have done to contribute to the outstanding accomplishments of building this country and improving civilization.

By traveling through a history time capsule called "Sankofa 82," KEMET, in mascot form, will talk to the students about the value of money and saving and the importance of financial literacy.

"There is a dire need for youth in urban areas to understand the importance of basic money management," said Joe Young, Founder and Producer of Joe Young Entertainment. "KEMET, BIG TIME SAVER will engage the students to think about the value of money, saving, and investing. Promoting financial literacy in our schools impacts the mind and behavior towards money management and understanding the value and importance of generational wealth."

"Financial health is a critical component of creating a stronger economic foundation and building generational wealth for the Black community," said Jumoke Fagbayi-Butts, Vice President and Senior Business Consultant at Chase. "We are committed to addressing the unique financial needs of those too often left behind in a growing economy. Our firm works with leaders like Joe Young to support the next generation of Black prosperity."

"We are happy to join nationally recognized cartoonist Joe Young, his cartoon character KEMET, BIG TIME SAVER, and JoAnn H. Price, Co-Founder/Managing Partner of Fairview Capital, to present this comic book to all students at P.S. 171 in Harlem," said Rocky Chowdhury, Vice President, and Community Manager for Chase in Harlem. "Building positive financial health habits early in life leads to great success, and applaud Joe's work to teach students responsible money habits that will help secure their financial futures."

KEMET, BIG TIME SAVER BACKGROUND

KEMET, BIG TIME SAVER comic book, was co-written by Joe Young and his daughter Paige Young. The comic book story features ten-year-old "Ro" who runs a lemonade stand and decides to use her profits from the revenues generated from her lemonade stand business to buy a new scooter. She gets frustrated after running into problems raising enough money.

KEMET, alerted about her dilemma, takes off in "Sankofa 82" to help her. He introduces Ro to three successful Black entrepreneurs from past and present: the late A.G. Gaston, one of the wealthiest African Americans of his time, including a $130 million business empire spanning communications, real estate, and insurance; JoAnn H. Price, Co-Founder/Managing Partner of Fairview Capital Partners (Private Equity and Venture Capital firm) with over $10.4 Billion in assets under management since inception; and the late Mary Ellen Pleasant, a 19th-century entrepreneur, financier, real estate magnate, and abolitionist who was the first self-made millionaire of African-American heritage.

Beginning in March, Young and his mascot KEMET will commence a tour to visit schools and youth groups with his KEMET BIG TIME SAVER PROGRAM. The KEMET youth activity sheets, which include fun and educational Black history facts, are distributed nationwide to schools and Black newspapers, reaching over 22 million readers a week. Young is in pre-production for the KEMET BIG TIME SAVER animated film.

Arlington Philharmonic to premiere 242 year-old work in upcoming concert

ARLINGTON, Mass. -- The Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the United States premiere a composition written in 1781 by Marianna Martines, a student of Franz Joseph Haydn. Martines work is the overture to her oratorio "Isacco." This edition by the Philharmonic Orchestra's Music Director Orlando Cela aims to preserve as much as possible the intentions of the composer, and show the mastery of Martines.

Martines was born in Vienna in 1744, in a building where luminary artists resided - Nicola Porpora and Franz Joseph Haydn, for example - above the chambers of the Esterhazy dowager princess. The poet Metastasio lived with Martines' family since 1734, and he helped to connect Martines to these artists, and more. By age ten, Martines was performing for the Imperial court, either singing or playing her compositions, which showed amazing prowess in her writing and her singing, since these compositions were not easy. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, and became a very popular musician in her day, being compared to CPE Bach on her harpsichord playing, and possibly having influenced the then 12 y.o. Mozart's Mass KV. 139.

The overture to be performed will open the Philharmonic Society of Arlington's Mid-Winter Concert entitled "It's All About Papa," since all the works are written by or influenced by "Papa" Franz Joseph Haydn. The rest of the program will include Johannes Brahms' "Variations on a Theme by Haydn," and Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 2 in D, featuring the 2022 Philharmonic Society of Arlington's Young Artist Competition Winner, cellist Elena Ariza.

Schedule:

The concert will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2023, 7:30 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist, 630 Mass. Ave, Arlington, MA, led by Cela.

Tickets will be on sale at the door:

$20 General Admission, $15 Students/Seniors, $5 Children 17 & Under. Wheelchair Accessible. Masking required to attend.

About The Philharmonic Society of Arlington:

The Philharmonic Society of Arlington, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community organization incorporating The Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra, The Arlington-Belmont Chorale, and The Arlington-Belmont Chamber Chorus.

California Strawberry Festival is Back – at a New Venue

OXNARD, Calif. -- After a three-year hiatus due to challenges brought on by the pandemic, the 2023 California Strawberry Festival will take place May 20-21. For the first time ever, the event will be held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

"We are thrilled to relaunch the California Strawberry Festival in 2023 at the Fairgrounds," says Dean Kato, Chairman of the California Strawberry Festival Board of Directors. "We realized that the event had outgrown the available space at our longtime venue, Oxnard's College Park. It's our 'comeback' year - and we want to come out bigger and better than ever."

This isn't the first time the Festival has outgrown a location, and the Fairgrounds venue was considered when the California Strawberry Festival moved from Channel Islands Harbor to College Park in 1991.

"Although the Festival has historically taken place in Oxnard, it belongs to all of Ventura County," says Kato.

The beachside location provides iconic views, and Ventura offers up a vibrant downtown just a few blocks away, with hotels, restaurants, and nightlife. Guests will appreciate that the Fairgrounds is close to the 101 freeway and has onsite parking, and the Festival will continue to host free shuttle services from many convenient locations.

Ventura's Amtrak station is situated adjacent to the Fairgrounds, so it's easier than ever to take the train directly to the Festival. Another benefit is that buildings, lighting, and restrooms are built-in amenities at the rain-or-shine venue.

"The Ventura County Fairgrounds and Event Center was built with the space and structural elements to accommodate large festivals," says Fairgrounds CEO Stacy Rianda. "We're looking forward to hosting the California Strawberry Festival."

The California Strawberry Festival is known in Ventura County as the kick-off to summertime, and tens of thousands of festivalgoers attend the celebration each year. Local non-profit organizations, food vendors, artists and crafters, entertainers, sponsors and hundreds of volunteers are instrumental to its success.

The all-volunteer board is ready for the opportunity to raise the bar in 2023.

"We've already been hard at work on the re-launch," says Kato. "Change is exciting. But of course, some things will stay the same - like the always-popular $5 build-your-own strawberry shortcake, fresh-picked local strawberries, and really nice arts and crafts. We're anticipating an outstanding Festival in 2023."
