Drink HRW Hydrogen Tablets Improve Markers of Aging in the Elderly

COQUITIAM, B.C. -- Aging is a reality that we all deal with, with age-related diseases creating a massive burden on our healthcare system. In recent years, researchers have begun exploring therapeutics that could potentially stave off, or even reverse, some of the deterioration associated with aging. Now, Drink HRW reports that a new randomized, placebo controlled clinical trial that followed elderly participants for 6 months, published online October 1st in Experimental Gerontology, explains that high doses of hydrogen water (HRW), delivered via hydrogen tablets, could be an effective strategy at improving multiple age-related measurements and outcomes in an elderly population.

The randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over trial compared the effects of chronic administration of hydrogen-rich water, created by hydrogen tablets, against baseline conditions and placebo control for numerous markers associated with the aging process in an elderly population (70+). Participants consumed either HRW, or placebo water, for 6 months. HRW lengthened telomeres, whereas the placebo group saw a decrease, improved brain metabolism, lowered subjective reports of pain, improved parameters within the senior fitness test, and led to strong trends regarding improvements in DNA methylation, increased antioxidant activity, and reduced oxidative stress.

Shortening telomeres have been hypothesized as being a causative factor in the aging process. As telomeres shorten, incidence of disease and deterioration increases, and survival outcomes decrease. Additionally, a decline in brain metabolism has been linked to onset of many neurological issues.

Sergej Ostojic, M.D., PH.D., Professor of Medicine at the University of Novi Sad, a senior author of the Experimental Gerontology study said, "We have been investigating hydrogen use in medicine in my lab for over a decade, and we already recognized its potential to improve metabolic health and every-day functioning in elderly. However, this study for the first time demonstrated its potential to improve several molecular and phenotypic biomarkers of aging. It's perhaps too early to say that hydrogen is an anti-aging compound but this study opens a new chapter in hydrogen research and implementation, and emphasizes several pathways linked with hydrogen action in the human body."

Alex Tarnava, Chief Executive Officer of Drink HRW said, "The aging process leads to deterioration and disruption in many of the key functions within our bodies. Molecular hydrogen has shown across 2000 publications and 120+ human studies to play a corrective role in restoring many of these proper functions, such as improving metabolic markers, promoting a healthy inflammatory response, and supporting the delicate harmony between our bodies natural levels of antioxidants and beneficial oxidative stressors. This is an important study that demonstrates the potential or high-dose hydrogen therapy to slow down, or even temporarily reverse, some of the deterioration aging causes."

Tarnava added, "At Drink HRW we deliver the highest dosage and concentration of hydrogen in water instantly available anywhere in the world, and we are committed to supporting research around the world to better understand this important and fascinating molecule. We work with researchers to search for the truth, believing strongly that the researchers, not private companies, should have the sole authority to decide if they will publish results. We believe pursuit of the truth and integrity in research is the best path towards long term growth."

Drink HRW Hydrogen Tablets Outperform Caffeine in Improving Brain Metabolism After Sleep Deprivation

COQUITIAM, B.C. -- The COVID-19 pandemic is creating unprecedented levels of sleep deprivation, which presents a significant risk to mental and physical health, says Drink HRW. Additionally, "COVID-somnia," a term coined to describe the rising prevalence of insomnia following COVID-19 infection, has begun to emerge.

Now, a new randomized, controlled cross-over pilot trial, published online, "Mondayin Food Science & Nutrition," explains that high doses of hydrogen water (HRW) are more effective than caffeine in positively impacting brain metabolism for sleep-deprived men and women. Importantly, the study is replicative in nature, after earlier research demonstrated that hydrogen water and caffeine were equivalent overall in raising attention in sleep-deprived individuals yet had an impact on different domains of alertness: Hydrogen improves orienting to sensory stimulation, while caffeine alters awareness and executive attention that refers to the ability to regulate responses in conflict situations.

The randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over pilot trial compared the acute effects of single-dose HRW, caffeine, or HRW and caffeine combined against a placebo beverage on parameters of attention and brain metabolism following sleep deprivation. HRW displayed a more robust effect on brain metabolism as compared to caffeine, leading to higher choline-to-creatine ratio levels in the frontal and paracentral brain as measured via MRI brain scans.

Additionally, HRW was superior to caffeine and the placebo in reducing the number of errors in the symbol digit modalities test (SDMT) and trail making test in the sleep-deprived individuals. HRW displayed no side effects and, therefore, might be advanced as a safe and effective alternative to caffeine to address some of the effects of sleep deprivation, with more studies on the subject highly warranted.

The trail making test is a neuropsychological test of visual attention and task switching, while the SDMT detects cognitive impairment. Brain metabolism was evaluated with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, a non-invasive gold-standard method to assess changes in creatine, choline, and N-acetylasparate across the brain.

Sergej Ostojic, M.D., PH.D., Professor of Medicine at the University of Novi Sad, a senior author of the Food Science & Nutrition study said, "This was another study by our group that confirmed possible nootropic effects of hydrogen-rich water in sleep-deprived men and women; these effects appear to be accompanied by notable changes in brain metabolism, with frontal brain specifically targeted by HRW. We used here robust methodology but still have to learn how HRW affects brain functioning at the cellular and subcellular level."

Alex Tarnava, Chief Executive Officer of Drink HRW said, "Sleep deprivation, poor diet, and countless other stressors we are bombarded with every day contribute to disruptions in many of the most critical functions our bodies have. Molecular hydrogen has shown across 1500 publications and 120 human studies to play a corrective role in restoring many of these proper functions, such as improving metabolic markers, promoting a healthy inflammatory response, and supporting the delicate harmony between our bodies natural levels of antioxidants and beneficial oxidative stressors."

We work with researchers to search for the truth, believing strongly that the researchers, not private companies, should have the sole authority to decide if they will publish results. We believe pursuit of the truth and integrity in research is the best path towards long term growth."

HRW supplied the hydrogen tablets for the study. It had no other involvement in the research.

Drink HRW Reports on Start of Large-Scale Randomized Controlled Trial and Preliminary Findings from Pilot Trial on the Reduction in Complications from COVID-19

COQUITLAM, BC, Canada -- Drink HRW is excited to announce that a large, double-blind placebo-controlled trial is set to begin this week in France, initiated by the University of Grenoble-Alpes. At the request of the researchers, Drink HRW is supplying the hydrogen tablets for the study as well as a donation to improve the size and scope of the research. It has no other involvement in the research or the decision to publish results.

In addition to the French study, a team from the University of Novi Sad in Serbia has also reported promising preliminary findings from a small pilot trial administering Drink HRW tablets to patients hospitalized from COVID-19.

A statement released in France by the team of researchers stated:

Our hypothesis is that the ingestion, as early as possible at the onset of Covid-19, of 2 times 250 mL per day of water enriched in molecular hydrogen by tablets (Drink HRW, Canada) containing 80 mg of magnesium metal (capable of spontaneously releasing hydrogen on contact with water), would reduce complications in patients over the age of 60, who have just been diagnosed with Covid-19 and do not show any signs of seriousness, and may therefore be treated at home.

Our hypotheses lead to an estimate of the necessary number of 450 patients (225 in each arm, prospective, randomized, double-blind study on a product classified as a "new dietary ingredient" by the Food and Drug Administration). One of the originalities of the protocol will be that the inclusion visits will be done by teleconsultation.

The study is coordinated by the TIMC laboratory (Joint Research Unit of CNRS and Université Grenoble Alpes). The principal investigator, Dr. Yoann Gaboreau, general practitioner, is University Lecturer - Outpatient Practitioner at the Department of General Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of Grenoble, active member of the research program "Covid-19 in ambulatory care and long-term COVID" with the REACTing consortium (REsearch and ACTion targeting emerging infectious diseases). About twenty general practitioners will be the investigators in charge of inclusions. The head of the methodology is Prof. Jean-Luc Bosson, the scientific manager is Prof. Philippe Cinquin, both Public Health Physicians. The promoter will be AGIRadom, a home health care provider expert in patient support, and which has the authorization to carry out clinical trials at home.

Despite the strong presumption of a possible interest in the ingestion of H2 at the early stages of Covid-19, no clinical trial aimed at evaluating the interest of the ingestion of H2 is currently listed on http://clinicaltrials.gov/. The test we are conducting will therefore be the first of its kind.

Drink HRW CEO Alex Tarnava added that the study will also follow patients for 1 year following recovery from COVID-19 in order to determine if the administration of hydrogen water ameliorates longer term effects from the disease.

Hydrogen therapy has emerged as a potential candidate for numerous models, including athletic performance and recovery, metabolic disorders, neurological outcomes, both acute and chronic, and even as a potential adjuvant therapy in cancer treatment. Although hydrogen therapy has not been approved for any health condition and more research is needed, there are roughly 100 publications exploring hydrogen therapy in humans demonstrating an effect from the use of hydrogen therapy, and a total of over 1500+ publications, mostly research experimenting on animals on the use of hydrogen therapy.

In February, the Chinese government added hydrogen inhalation to their approved protocol for the treatment of the novel coronavirus (*note 1). The first clinical trial in China, an open label study with 44 patients, reported promising results (*note 2). The trial was headed by Prof. Nan-Shon Zhong, famous for leading China through the SARS pandemic in 2003 and who has also acted as a senior advisor to the Chinese government throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. A larger multi-center clinical trial utilizing hydrogen inhalation is underway in China. Hydrogen-rich water has often shown a more prominent effect than hydrogen gas inhalation at much lower dosages, easier convenience, and lower cost.

Dr. Sergej Ostojic, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, a noted hydrogen researcher and expert in bioenergetics, currently has ongoing clinical research exploring the Drink HRW tablets for potential effects in multiple phenotypic biomarkers of aging in the elderly, as well as the use of hydrogen water in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. He said:

"Hydrogen gas appears to inhibit airway inflammation in patients with asthma, an effect that might improve the condition of inflammatory cytokines storm seen in COVID-19. To test this hypothesis, we recently started a small-scale open-label study to evaluate the acute effects of hydrogen-rich water administration on oxygen saturation, patient-reported outcomes and other relevant biomarkers in COVID-19 patients. Preliminary findings suggest beneficial effects yet the study is still on-going and more research activities are ahead of my team. Like other promising (and urgently needed) therapeutics for COVID-19, hydrogen requires accelerated yet attentive research and approval pathways, with sufficient efficacy and safety guarantees."

Tarnava stated, "COVID-19 is a serious issue, and we at Drink HRW are ecstatic to assist in any way we can."
