David and Laura Merage Foundation Donates 500 Toy Boxes to Children of Healthcare Workers

DENVER, Colo. -- The David and Laura Merage Foundation launched the Merage Mini Heroes project to bring joy to the children of courageous frontline healthcare workers who are putting in extraordinarily long hours away from their families. Working in partnership with Timbuk Toys and several other local businesses, the foundation created 500 age-appropriate toy boxes that were gifted to parents at St. Joseph's Hospital and Denver Health.

"Our intention is to spark a bit of joy with these toys, and quite simply show these little ones how grateful we are that they are sharing their families with Coloradans in need," stated Sue Renner, Vice President of Philanthropy at the David and Laura Merage Foundation.

In honor of National Nurses Week, the foundation team delivered 500 boxes to the medical and non-medical staff at the two local hospitals. The hospitals then distributed these boxes for staff to pick up, noting the delight that their staff and the children showed when receiving these boxes.

"The Merage Little Heroes project is a humongous success! It is generating lots of excitement and overwhelming joy, and we are so thankful that David, Laura and their organization provided us with this act of kindness," responded Jamie Smith, CEO at St. Joseph Hospital.

This initiative exemplifies the deep commitment that David and Laura Merage have for early childhood education. In addition to Merage Mini Heroes, the David and Laura Merage Foundation has launched two nationwide programs focused on increasing high-quality care and education, Early Learning Ventures (ELV) and CareForAllChildren. Since its founding in 2008, ELV has impacted over 41,000 children and served 550 childcare programs around the U.S.

The CareForAllChildren campaign is paving the way for working parents and advocates to call on presidential candidates to address the childcare crisis. Each of these initiatives aims at supporting our youngest learners, families, and another set of heroes, childcare providers.

The Merage Mini Heroes initiative is unique in providing the opportunity to lift the spirts of our brave parents and their children during this challenging time. If additional hospitals and foundations are looking to participate or expand the current giving program, please contact Catharina Hughey, Operations Specialist, chughey@merage.org.

BHERC ‘Operation Love’ Set to Deliver Mother’s Day Sunday Meals and Essential Goods to Homeless Families in Washington, DC and Baltimore

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) continues its "Operation Love" outreach Saturday May 9, and Sunday, May 10, 2020 in Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland targeting homeless families with "underlying" health and psychosocial conditions who have been extremely impacted by COVID 19 shelter in place mandates and need assistance.

This effort will provide A Mother's Day meal or grocery box with two weeks of food with healthy recipes, Laced with Love on how to prepare the meals and a gift basket of essential items for 500 families living shelters, special housing and homeless encampments. The program has reached over 2000 seniors and homeless individuals since the start of the pandemic. Some of the agencies will pick up the gift boxes from 3532 Massachusetts Ave NW, while others will be delivered directly to the shelter or encampment, a list of the agencies can be found below.

"Operation Love" meals and gift baskets are for homeless families living in the shelters or special housing programs including their children, and caregivers. As we begin to celebrate Nurses Week, "Year of the Nurse and Midwife," the Mother's Day dinner, grocery boxes and gift baskets are being donated in honor of Dr. Bernardine M. Lacey an extraordinary nurse leader. Dr. Bernardine Lacey, is credited with starting the movement to include care of the underserved in the nursing curriculum and she started the first nurse operated homeless clinic at the D Street Shelter, in Washington, D.C. Because of this movement, the profession is better prepared to care for the most vulnerable populations in the American society.

"This small showing of love is both a practical and a heartfelt demonstration of the importance of our most vulnerable populations. We want the homeless to know they have not been forgotten in the midst of our mandated and necessary physical distancing," states Sandra Evers-Manly, President of BHERC.

The gift basket includes feminine hygiene products, hard to find items such as: gloves, toilet paper, face masks, hand sanitizer and various other essential items. In addition, the children's book Raised by Mrs. Manly and her Ls, written by Ms. Sandra Evers-Manly and other toys will be given to the children. The meals and baskets will be prepared and delivered using City/State and CDC guidelines. Contributors to the gift baskets include the Living Legend Dr. Bernardine Lacey, Dr. Shirley Evers-Manly, President All Health Care/Imani's, the National Black Nurses Association, Gwendylon Johnson, member Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority,

During this unprecedented time in our lives, the COVID19 worldwide health and humanitarian pandemic is redefining the very way we live our lives daily. In many instances, eclipsing the future of what daily work, education, entertainment and play will look like in the future for all of us. In addition to the need for essential supplies is the need for emotional support. "Operation Love delivers a strong message that you are not alone in these difficult times. We are with you!" says Evers-Manly.

At BHERC, this is the kind of action that has made the BHERC family, its friends and colleagues, unique as we demonstrate an enthusiastic abiding support and responsive manner when called upon over the years. BHERC encourages everyone that can to act.

"Let's remind the ones around us how much they matter. Encourage them to stay strong and steadfast," states Evers-Manly.

The BHERC family encourages everyone to consider supporting the vulnerable populations, You can:
* Contact a homeless shelter to check on their needs
* If shopping (do so under City/State and CDC guidelines), pick up an item or two for a homeless family or someone in need (practice social distancing)
* Donate or make mask for the shelter or isolated seniors
* Send an online order to someone in need

In addition to the focus on homeless, the BHERC Operation Love is focused on distributing masks to seniors and supporting the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA). Last week the BHERC president made a contribution to the NBNA to create a special fund to support nurses on the front-line battling COVID19 and to curate an online instructional program for Nurses to Help Nurses. The NBNA donation will also provide 1000 masks for NBNA nurses and provide support for their distribution of masks, meals, nursing education, and culturally sensitive health education materials where chapters are located across the country.

"Each and every one of us must reach out in a safe way to make sure vulnerable populations have someone to talk to, have medications and have enough food to eat during these difficult times," expressed Dr. Martha A. Dawson, President of the National Black Nurses Association. "We are pleased to partner with Ms. Sandra Evers-Manly during these challenging times."

Everyone can all join in the fight by making just a quick phone call or sending a simple text message. Keeping each other positive and reminding your neighbors and loved ones that even in our isolation, we are not alone. #BHERCStrongTogether

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Law Office of Edward A. Smith, dba AutoAccident.com, is providing food assistance to present and former clients of the firm by delivering groceries to their homes, free of charge.

Beginning May 1, clients can contact the firm and order up to $100 worth of groceries from their choice of either Whole Foods or Raley's.

Each order will be inputted to the nearest grocery store available and delivered directly to the client's doorstep.

Edward Smith, who has considered the plight of many during the Sacramento quarantine, especially those who are presently out of work, recovering from an injury or at elevated risk and who cannot shop without worry.

"We want our clients to know that we are all in this together," says Smith. Disasters lead us to a deeper knowledge that at some level we all are kin.

The firm will provide this service to clients upon request until dedicated funds are depleted.

"We wish we could offer this service to everyone, of course, but our resources are limited," says Smith.

But we'll provide for as many as we can.

As of May 1, there are 1,077 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 43 deaths in Sacramento County, making this area among those most deeply affected by the pandemic.

An inability to afford or be able to personally shop for groceries has become a challenge for many.

The staff of AutoAccident.com continues to handle personal injury cases remotely via video consultation, and in-office by appointment.

Some clients have revealed that the added difficulty of dealing with formerly simple tasks such as grocery shopping makes their lives almost unbearable.

"During this stressful time, the last thing we would want is for them and their families to worry about hunger."

The Only COVID-19 Initiative that Brings Self-Care to Frontliners While in Action

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- On National Nurses Day, the Sufi Psychology Association ("SPA"), through its "Caring for Our Caregivers" COVID-19 initiative, will provide direct access to hours of self-care and meditation programs to help bring solace to healthcare professionals fighting on the frontlines of this pandemic. The tablets that carry these much needed programs will be donated to hospitals across eight states including California and Illinois.

The Caring for Our Caregivers initiative gives these frontline heroes access to stress relieving techniques. The program donates disposable headsets and tablets, pre-loaded with meditation, visualization, deep breathing, and other stress reducing videos to hospitals so that healthcare professionals can access the tools they need during these trying times. Currently, the program has an extensive and growing waitlist of hospitals. Therefore, they are asking for donations of tablets and/or disposable headsets to help facilitate the demand.

The initiative was started because, "Burnout is a serious problem. It affects you physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually. It was already on the rise for healthcare workers pre-COVID and these workers are known for putting others first and their own needs last (if at all)," says Sufi Psychology Association founder, Dr. Lynn Wilcox. "Now, as they are working tirelessly to protect us, the Sufi Psychology Association wants to make sure they have the tools to take care of themselves as well, and aren't left drained and with a slew of other issues post-COVID."

The Sufi Psychology Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that focuses on utilizing the principles of Sufism in Psychology.

Pledging 1,975 Meals and More to Mark 45 Years Since Refugees First Arrived in the US on April 30, 1975

WESTMINSTER, Calif. -- Vietnamese Americans in Orange County's Little Saigon issued a "Nailing It For America" challenge to other Vietnamese communities throughout the country: Join the national day of giving back beginning Thursday, April 30 to help healthcare professionals and other front-line workers fighting the coronavirus (COVID-19).

So far, New York City, Boston, Dallas, San Jose, Salt Lake City and others have plans to deliver 1,975 meals and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Earlier this month, "Nailing It" volunteers collected and delivered more than 120,000 medical-grade masks and 300,000 gloves within 10 days for Southern California's healthcare professionals combatting COVID-19. Vietnamese restaurants also joined the cause, delivering 20,000 meals along with PPEs last Thursday.

After the shutdown of nonessential businesses across America, Advance Beauty College President Tam Nguyen and others mobilized the nail industry nationally to donate 1.2 million medical-grade masks, gloves and other PPEs in nearly every state to healthcare workers who desperately needed them. The group estimates the value of supplies is approximately $30 million.

Vietnamese Americans have transformed the nail industry thanks to the chance encounter of Tippi Hedren at Hope Village refugee camp in Northern California in 1975. After the visit, the star of "The Birds" flew her personal manicurist in weekly to teach the group of Vietnamese refugees the nail craft and even helped them secure nail salon jobs in Southern California.

Thursday marks a significant milestone for the nation's 2.1 million Americans of Vietnamese descent since the first wave of refugees from war-torn Vietnam reached America on April 30, 1975.

"Thursday is a special day to show our gratitude to America and to countless Americans like Tippi Hedren who embraced us and gave us a chance to rebuild our lives after the Fall of Saigon," Nguyen said. "It's also a day for the rise of the Vietnamese community in America to help front-line workers conquer COVID-19."

Unlikely North Carolina Companies Partner Together to Produce Reusable Masks

RALEIGH, N.C. -- EHOP Health(R), a chronic disease reversal company headquartered in Apex, NC and Harriss & Covington, a hosiery mill headquartered in High Point, NC, recently delivered reusable face masks to customers across North Carolina and the United States. The first business to receive the reusable masks was Weaver Street Market.

This unlikely partnership between health coaching, manufacturing, and grocery store firms produced the new face mask brand, Easy Masks(TM).

These non-medical face masks serve the needs of employees, customers, families, and individuals who need protection for their essential trips.

"I became convinced that fabric masks are a useful tool in minimizing exposure dose to viral particles," said William (B.J.) Lawson, MD and CEO of EHOP Health. "Our first client, and a fifth-generation family business that has been knitting socks in High Point, North Carolina for 100 years, instantly came to my mind as having the potential to create a comfortable, reusable facemask."

Harriss & Covington's Co-President, Tyler Covington had just been ordered to shut down his manufacturing plant's non-essential activities due to the COVID-19 health pandemic. After speaking with Lawson, he recruited a small research and development team to prototype several face masks. "I wanted to help our state, and our country, safely get back to work," said Covington. "I believed we could find a solution for the growing demand of reusable face masks and through collaboration we have a face mask for the everyday essential needs."

Thanks to iterative feedback from associates of Weaver Street Market, another EHOP Health Client, the team quickly found out what features were required for a mask comfortable enough for all-day wear. "This has been a godsend," stated Ruffin Slater General Manager, Weaver Street Market. "We needed a protective mask to offer to our frontline employees and customers, and we wanted a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution which Easy Masks delivers."

Free Oil Changes to Seattle Area Healthcare Professionals

SEATTLE, Wash. -- LIQUI MOLY today announced it has partnered to provide motor oil to Seattle area repair shops for free oil changes to more than 150 area healthcare professionals.

LIQUI MOLY, a global motor oil and additive company based in Germany, has a history of being involved in its communities from motorsport to continued support and education for the many automotive shops providing its products.

"We are pleased to make a difference where and how we can," explained LIQUI MOLY USA/Canada CEO, Sebastian Zelger. "These healthcare professionals are making significant sacrifices and commitments devoting countless hours and days to saving so many people's lives. At the very least, hopefully this will relieve them of one stress that might encroach in their busy lives. The last thing we'd want is a devoted healthcare professional not able to make it to his or her responsibilities because of car trouble. An oil change-something statistically many will need during this crisis-can help avoid that."

The average age of vehicles on the road today is around eleven years. Many of these cars require oil changes every 5,000 miles. Seattle area workers commute an average of 50 minutes roundtrip each day-often at speeds averaging as low as 21mph-and the average driver puts 1,000 miles per month on their cars. Unless a driver got his or her oil changed the first two months of the year, chances are they will need one soon.

"We see how hard the healthcare workers are working and dealing with so much stress during this time," explained Blake Walker, Owner of Central Automotive in Kent, Wwashington. "We've grown over the years not just because of our automotive skills, but because of the relationships we've built with our customers and wonderful partners like LIQUI MOLY. Our customers are like family to us and if they need help, we're here for them. This is the best way we could think to help them out right now."

Central Automotive is a full-service Automotive Repair and service center and has been serving South King County for 25 years.

Through this program, LIQUI MOLY and Central Automotive will be contributing more than 150 oil services and interior disinfection services to the healthcare community. To take advantage of this program, employees at Valley Medical will call Central Automotive and schedule an appointment. Upon presenting their employee ID, they would get a free LIQUI MOLY oil change, interior vehicle disinfection service, and free ozone treatment.

About LIQUI MOLY

With around 4,000 items, LIQUI MOLY offers a global, uniquely broad range of automotive chemicals: Motor oils and additives, greases and pastes, sprays and car care, glues and sealants.
