Recovery Expert Slash Coleman To Discuss New Laughter Yoga Addiction Treatment in Webinar to Help Participants Sustain Long-term Sobriety

RICHMOND, Va. -- Renowned author and US Laughter Ambassador Slash Coleman announced today that he will offer a webinar on a new form of addiction treatment entitled "Redefining Addiction and Recovery Through Laughter Yoga." Hosted by the Master Center for Addiction Medicine, this free webinar will occur on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. ET and is meant for addiction specialists, laughter yoga professionals, and participants struggling with substance and activity addictions.

Coleman will speak about an in-patient recovery program he created at a treatment facility in 2019 aimed at helping those who struggle with addictions to: alcohol, drugs, sex, relationships, spending, gambling, eating, and self-injury. The program, which has been utilized successfully as an initiative with the US Department of Veterans Affairs, has been known to help participants gain independence from addictive behavior by: reducing stress related cravings, boosting resistance to intense urges and building purpose, self-esteem and sober coping strategies.

"I grew up with addiction in my family and know firsthand the pain it causes," Coleman says. "It's gratifying to see how something as simple as laughter can have such a positive impact on something as complex as addiction."

Slash Coleman is best known for his work on stage, in books and on television where he often uses his irreverent humor to create stories related to his family's struggle with addiction. In 2015, after suffering a mysterious lung collapse while on his book tour, his journey back to health led him to India where he studied with Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of the worldwide laughter yoga movement.

"Using laughter yoga to support multiple treatment paths makes this unique," says Alexa Fong Drubay, Executive Director of Laughter Yoga USA. "Since addiction is a family disease, our network of free laugher clubs around the world allows us to not only focus on individuals struggling with addiction, but provide family members with support, as well."

Enrollment in the webinar is limited and pre-registration is recommended at: https://laughteryogarichmond.com/masterclass.

There is no cost for participants, though a $25 recommended donation for laughter professionals and those who work in a recovery-related field is suggested. For more information visit https://laughteryogarichmond.com/.

Midwives for an Equitable and Sustainable Future: ACNM Extends Year of Nurse and Midwife, Begins Decade of the Midwife

SILVER SPRING, Md. -- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization extended the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife into 2021 in Europe, to celebrate and recognize the hard work of nurses and midwives fighting the pandemic. The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) supports this decision and hereby extends this recognition to the United States.

The COVID-19 pandemic has showcased the critical role midwives play in keeping people healthy across the lifespan. It has also exposed the weaknesses in our healthcare systems and the enormous challenges midwives face every day, as well as shined a light on their incredible commitment and courage. Finally, it has given us the opportunity to reconsider and explore models of care that center midwifery care. As the world's oldest profession, midwives must play an integral part in the future of the world's healthcare.

2021 also kicks off the "Decade of the Midwife" (2021-2030), an initiative led by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM). We are at a pivotal point in history, and the actions we take over the next ten years will determine the future direction of healthcare. This initiative will aim to highlight the role of midwives as gender champions in their communities and disseminate evidence about the vital need for midwives to transform quality sexual and reproductive healthcare for a sustainable future.

"We are thrilled to extend the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife and kick off the Decade of the Midwife," stated ACNM President, Cathy Collins-Fulea, DNP, CNM, FACNM. "Given the critical roles midwives have played in the COVID-19 pandemic, now more than ever there is a need to celebrate, uplift, and center midwives in the conversation about improved healthcare."

ACNM's goals for the Decade of the Midwife center around four categories: practice, education, research, and policy. This initiative will integrate seamlessly with our strategic goals, mission, campaigns, and contributions over the next ten years. By focusing on how we can center the midwife in the fight for equitable and sustainable global healthcare, we can work to achieve sexual and reproductive health and rights for all.

About ACNM

With over 6,500 members, ACNM is the professional association that represents certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) in the United States. ACNM promotes excellence in midwifery education, clinical practice, and research. With roots dating to 1929, our members are primary care providers for women throughout the lifespan, with a special emphasis on pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive health. ACNM provides research, administers, and promotes continuing education programs, establishes education and clinical practice standards, and creates liaisons with state and federal agencies and members of Congress to increase the visibility and recognition of midwifery care.

Across Healthcare announces the eDocSS app, an EHR integrated application that allows surgeons and institutions to comply with new Commission on Cancer Synoptic Operative Report Standards

CARROLTON, Ga. -- Across Healthcare announces the eDocSS app, an EHR integrated application that allows surgeons and institutions to comply with new Commission on Cancer Synoptic Operative Report Standards. Evidence-based research indicates that surgical outcomes related to cancer patients such as quality of life and survival can be improved by adhering to specific operative techniques. In addition, replacing narrative operative dictations with synoptic operative reports can improve the capture of vital cancer surgery information. With these facts in mind, the 2020 Commission on Cancer (CoC) standards for accreditation now require synoptic operative reports (SORs) for four new operative standards that span colon, breast, and melanoma surgery.

To facilitate implementation of these operative standards, Across Healthcare co-developed the electronic Documentation of Surgery Standards (eDocSS) app with the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This app, which is embedded into electronic health records (EHRs), provides surgeons with ACS-developed Synoptic Operative Reports (SORs) that include evidence-based data fields, linkages to appropriate coding standards, and detailed explanatory notes to facilitate accurate completion of the report. Across Healthcare is working closely with EHR vendors to embed the app using a standards-based SMART on FHIR framework, that aligns with the 21st Century Cures Act final rule, to speed implementation and adoption.

"As one of the most advanced cancer centers in the country, Helen F. Graham Cancer Center within the Christiana Care Health System, was honored to be the initial site for the eDocSS app," said Dr. Karen Louie, Breast Surgeon. "With the app embedded into our Cerner PowerChart, this makes completing a synoptic operative report very efficient for our surgeons."

The eDocSS application includes the following:

* Auto-population - Pre-existing fields are pulled from the patient record, and the surgeon needs only to verify the information or edit as needed.

* CoC Standards - Fulfills the synoptic operative reporting requirements for the Commission on Cancer 2020 operative standards 5.3 through 5.6.

* American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM Staging System - TNM categories are incorporated into any data fields related to staging.

* National Cancer Database (NCDB) Codes - Select NCDB codes and definitions from the Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE) manual that are relevant to the data fields in the app.

* EHR Integration - eDocSS uses SMART on FHIR and will be integrated with top EHR vendors. This application is not a standalone app, but rather uses Single Sign On (SSO) and embeds inside the workflow of the EHR.

"We were blessed to work closely with the experts at ACS as well as many surgeons across the country to develop the eDocSS app," said Jason Colquitt, CEO of Across Healthcare. "Our focus will now shift to supporting the more than 1,500 CoC accredited cancer programs that need to comply with the new CoC operative standards."

Currently, there are three SORs available in the eDocSS app. The ACS CSSP (Cancer Surgery Standards Program) team is planning to develop over 45 SORs that will all be available within eDocSS as they are released. Additional management and maintenance of the SORs within eDocSS will be handled by Across Healthcare. The eDocSS app is available to both CoC and non-CoC surgeons and institutions.

To learn more about eDocSS visit www.eDocSS.app or contact us at info@edocss.app.

Boomer Brains Declining Faster Than Earlier Generations, Despite Higher Wealth, Education

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. -- Despite U.S. Baby Boomers having the longest life expectancy in history [1], their brains are aging at a faster rate than previous generations, according to a recent Ohio State University nationwide study [2]. For Boomers, the first generation to show cognition regression, research indicates that wealth and education have no equitable bearings on brain function. Currently ranging from ages 62 to 72 (born 1948-1959) and primed for a lengthy and enriching retirement, the feared complexities of living an increasingly longer life - but with a quickly declining brain - is evitable for those able and willing to invest in advanced treatments, such as the Aviv Medical Program.

Living better, longer

Spawning the longevity movement are societal concerns associated with a population in which older people outnumber the young - a historical first, projected for 2025 in the U.S., when seniors (65 million) will surpass children age 13 and under (58 million). Recognizing global impacts of an aging population, the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2021-2030 the Decade of Healthy Ageing, an initiative dedicated to improving the lives of older people, their families and the communities in which they live.

Progress abounds and none too soon. Bioscience researchers are developing promising medical treatment options to give people longer lasting cognitive function enabling optimum health later in life. Just last month (February 2021), a Bloomberg Moonshot episode, the network's global news streaming program, dedicated an entire episode to medical advancements that are already in practice and scientifically-proven to treat the aging process - ultimately, circumventing age-related diseases - as explained by leading researchers from Harvard Medical School and Aviv Scientific.

Of those discussed, the Aviv Medical Program, a proprietary protocol concentrated in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), is attracting affluent, active Boomers from all over the world. Results from a landmark study, published in the peer-review journal Aging [3], indicate that upon completing the three-month program participant bodies changed at cellular level - equivalent to 25 years earlier - among healthy adults age 64 or older. This proven treatment is readily available and presents opportunity to improve and restore cognitive function such as memory, attention, speed of information processing and more.

"Until now, biologically preserving and restoring healthy brain function was unavailable. Today, there's finally an individualized brain health program that actually assesses and changes the physiology of the brain," said Mohammed Elamir, M.D., board-certified physician at Aviv Clinics. "This will enable people to take control of the trajectory of their health span. Protecting your independence, mobility, vitality and personality can be by choice - not by chance."

For Boomers embarking on the third age - ready to redefine retirement with energy, mobility, independence and healthy brain performance, the Aviv Medical Program is a substantial investment cost in improving quality of life today and maintaining it for years to come. Outside of Israel, the treatment is only available at the Aviv Clinics medical center located in Central Florida.

Treating the Aging Process, Enhancing Brain Performance

Aviv Clinics is now open and accepting new clients looking to improve and maintain cognitive acuity and physical performance. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call (352) 488-2848 or visit https://aviv-clinics.com/.

Twenty-Nine States Proclaim March SUDC Awareness Month for Unexplained Childhood Deaths

ROSELAND, N.J. -- The Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) Foundation thanks Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming for making statewide proclamations declaring March 2021 as SUDC Awareness Month. The SUDC Foundation also applauds the California State Legislature for recognizing SUDC Awareness Month in House Resolution 24.

These are the first states to join a nationwide effort led by the SUDC Foundation to raise awareness of one of the most under-recognized medical tragedies of our time, marking the beginning of a month-long campaign all over the world.

Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) is a category of death in children over the age of 1 year which remains unexplained after a thorough investigation, including an autopsy. Most often, a seemingly healthy child goes to sleep and never wakes up. Approximately 400 children are lost to SUDC in the United States every year.

"As we enter another March, we are energized to have another successful month of raising SUDC awareness," said Laura Gould Crandall, President and Co-founder of the SUDC Foundation. "Awareness is crucial for funding critical research and supporting those affected by sudden unexpected or unexplained death in childhood. SUDC is the fifth leading category of death in children ages 1 to 4, yet SUDC receives no targeted public funding. The SUDC Foundation provides all services at no cost to bereaved families. Awareness helps families find us when they need us most and awareness launches us toward a world free of SUDC."

"Throughout March, we will continue to focus efforts around increasing awareness within the medical community as well," added Dr. Erin Bowen, SUDC Foundation Vice President and pediatrician. "Despite the fact that SUDC affects approximately 400 children annually, many physicians and medical professionals are unaware of it. Currently the understanding of SUDC eludes the medical community. Increased awareness can lead to further research initiatives to help uncover causes and risk factors for these deaths, with the ultimate goal of preventing them, leading to a future free of SUDC. As we work toward a deeper understanding of SUDC, we can ensure that families are adequately supported when these tragedies occur.

"If even one new family is connected to the SUDC Foundation as a result of our community's awareness efforts, then we can consider this month a success. Many bereaved parents will tell you their biggest fear is their child will be forgotten. SUDC Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to share the stories of these families, to honor the children affected and to say their names. SUDC awareness gives families a voice."

The SUDC Foundation will once again mark SUDC Awareness Month by hosting weekly awareness activities for all supporters to participate. To learn more, please visit: https://sudc.org/get-involved/sudc-awareness-month.

The SUDC Foundation is advocating for SUDC Awareness Month proclamations in all 50 U.S. states this March. In 2020, 41 participated. This nationwide effort began in 2016, inspired by Drew Joseph Boswell and the Boswell family. The Boswell family successfully advocated for the first statewide proclamation declaring March 2015 as SUDC Awareness Month in the State of Louisiana.

To see a list of previous efforts as well as additional states who have joined, please visit: https://sudc.org/get-involved/legislative-advocacy/sudc-awareness-proclamations.

About the SUDC Foundation:

The SUDC Foundation's mission is to promote awareness, advocate for research and support those affected by SUDC. The SUDC Foundation provides all services at no cost to families.

Dr. Rodney Kryzhanovskiy Joins the Spodak Dental Group Team

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- Dr. Rodney Kryzhanovskiy, a general dentist with a passion for transforming lives, joins the admired team of general and specialty dentists at the Spodak Dental Group. He strives to relate to each patient and understand their needs, desires and concerns, and to help them achieve optimal dental health that aligns with their lifestyle.

"Dr. Rodney is a wonderful addition to our team and we are excited to have him provide our family of patients with unparalleled dental care," said Dr. Craig Spodak, general dentist at Spodak Dental Group. "His desire to connect with his patients and help them achieve their smile goals aligns with our desire to elevate the dental experience and provide a truly memorable visit. We look forward to a great future together."

For Dr. Rodney, the path to becoming a dentist wasn't clear or easy. He was born in Russia and moved to the States with his family when he was 3 years old. They lived in New York until he was 15 years old, and moved to many of the boroughs due to his father looking for work. As an immigrant family, dentistry was considered a luxury and he did not have any exposure to it as a child. However, the story changed when he and his family moved to Florida where he completed high school.

During his undergrad, he was working several jobs, one of which was in a restaurant as a server. One of his regular patrons was a dentist and Dr. Rodney saw how kind he was, and how he considered dentistry a fulfilling career. So, he asked if he could work for free in his dental office, and within two weeks he had a job as an assistant and a passion for the profession.

"I saw how many lives he touched and how much he affected the community, and it grounded my decision to go into dental school," said Dr. Rodney. "My path in dentistry made me value the relationships you build and how much someone's life can be transformed through the power of a smile."

Dr. Rodney earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. before pursuing a dental career at LECOM School of Dental Medicine in Bradenton, Fla. where he received his Doctorate in Dental Medicine. He provides patients with a wide range of services, including crowns and bridges, full and partial dentures, implant restorations, composite restorations, extractions, periodontal diagnosis, and Invisalign.

He is a member of the Member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Florida Dental Association, and the Virginia Dental Association. He is also fluent in Russian.

In his spare time, he and his wife Meghan, daughter Madeline, and dog Liana enjoy spending time hiking, kayaking, biking, exploring museums, relaxing at the beach and trying new foods.

The Spodak Dental Group, a 2017 Inc. 5000 honoree, has evolved to become South Florida's premier, comprehensive dental facility, and comprises a world-class association of dental professionals poised to provide full-service dental care second-to-none in both scope and skill. The Spodak Dental Group team includes General and Restorative Dentists, Endodontists, Periodontists, Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Master Ceramic Artists and Anesthesiologists, as well as one of the nation's only in-office dental labs.

Pure Transplant Solutions Announces Collaboration with King’s College London to Support NHS Funded GAMECHANgER-1 Clinical Trial for HLA Sensitized Patients with End Stage Renal Disease

AUSTIN, Texas -- Pure Transplant Solutions, LLC (PTS), a collaboration driven biotechnology company focused on the development of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-based diagnostics and therapeutics within the field of transplantation, is proud to announce that it has entered into a collaboration agreement with King's College London, a leading university providing world-class teaching and cutting-edge research, to support the Phase IIa GAMECHANgER-1 clinical trial.

The trial aims to determine whether adoptive transfer of regulatory T cells (Tregs) into HLA sensitised patients can suppress memory T and B cell responses against specific HLA antigens in order to extend the longevity of donor organs.

The collaborative research is being led by Dr. Anthony Dorling, Professor of Transplant Inflammation and Repair, and Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at the Centre for Nephrology, Urology, and Transplantation, and Dr. Rico Buchli, VP of Products and Services at PTS. The collaboration intends to investigate whether in vitro anti-HLA T & B cell responses in sensitized patients can be inhibited by an adoptive transfer of T regulatory cells. Under the Agreement, PTS will provide its proprietary soluble HLA (sHLA) molecules which will be used to trigger functional responses of patient cells in Fluorospot assays.

Furthermore, PTS will provide biotinylated sHLA for memory b-cell detection and characterization. Researchers hope that the results of the study will lead to a better understanding of immune tolerance, extend the duration of suppression of HLA-specific responses by Tregs and ultimately produce state-of-the-art immune therapeutics to control rejection.

"We feel that PTS has the fundamental ingredients needed to provide new sets of tools to those who care for transplant patients," Dr. Buchli stated. "Our proteins can solve a number of important challenges in DSA and B cell monitoring. With this collaboration, we are able to go beyond monitoring and help pave the way in generating immune therapeutics of the future."

"The group of highly sensitized dialysis patients that we'll be recruiting to GAMECHANgER-1 have difficulties getting a suitable kidney transplant and once transplanted suffer higher rates of rejection and complications associated with our current treatments for rejection," said Dr. Dorling. "This trial will determine whether patients' own regulatory T cells can be used to suppress immune memory responses against specific human leukocyte antigens (HLA), and if successful will pave the way for larger scale trials to determine if these regulatory cells can be used as therapy to prevent or minimise these problems in future. The HLA proteins provided by Pure Transplant Solutions are an essential tool used to tailor our immunemonitoring for individual patients, so I'm delighted to be partnering with the company to ensure a stable, long-term supply of these reagents. This trial offers a glimpse of how personalised medicine might help transform outcomes for this disadvantaged group of patients."

Caisson Biotech, LLC and Heparinex, LLC Announce Positive Examination Report of European Patent and the Discovery of a New Class of Sugar Polymers

AUSTIN, Texas -- Caisson Biotech and parent company Heparinex are pleased to announce that they have received a positive examination report from the European Patent Office for a patent covering the chemoenzymatic production of heparosan utilized in the HEPtune® drug delivery platform. Once certified, the new patent family will increase patent coverage across Europe, adding to the U.S. holdings.

The HEPtune platform, which utilizes heparosan, a naturally occurring polysaccharide, has been validated as a novel half-life extension and drug delivery alternative to commonly used polyethylene glycol (PEG). Unlike PEG, heparosan is naturally found in humans, is completely biodegradable, and will not trigger anaphylactic shock or anti-drug antibodies. The HEPtune platform has been applied to numerous drug classes including biologics, and small molecules via nanocarriers, including liposomes.

In addition to positive news received by the EPO, Heparinex is excited to announce that it has created a new class of sugar polymers, sulfated hepbiuronic acid (sHBA) that mimic some, but not all, of the desirable activities of heparin, a drug employed to treat many diseases including the fight against severe COVID-19 and influenza. These novel patent-pending drug candidates can quell the initiation of inflammation, but do not inhibit blood coagulation, thus can be used to protect organs such as the lungs, heart, and kidneys that are often damaged by the body's own defenses during disease without the risk of bleeding. The sHBA should be a useful addition to the arsenal of drugs currently dispensed to treat hyper-inflammation spawned by infectious, cardiovascular, and auto-immune diseases.

Heparosan conjugation was developed by Presidential Professor Dr. Paul DeAngelis at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) and includes a robust U.S. and international patent portfolio. "Our goal is to decipher and harness the natural 'sugar codes' in the body in more selective, customized fashion to target diseases and reduce side effects. We are excited by the possibilities for better medicines", said DeAngelis. He was named as one of the most influential researchers in the world according to a study led by an investigator at Stanford University and published in PLOS Biology.
