Addiction Recovery Imprint Acquires Memoir by First Time Author David Griggs

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Addiction recovery imprint Zephyr Bookshelf announced today that it's publishing a brand-new title this winter: "Taming the Wild Things in My Head" by first-time author David H. Griggs.

The memoir is equal parts harrowing, heartbreaking and hopeful - a compelling collection of stories that charts Griggs's impossible trajectory from an otherwise normal upbringing to the darkest depths of substance abuse.

From meth-addled machine gunning in the National Guard to alcoholic sex-crazed blackouts in Japan to crack binges in San Francisco during the dot-com era, Griggs paints a beautifully raw portrait of addiction with both delicate and deliberately reckless brushstrokes.

"What truly makes a recovery story unique is how it's told," Zephyr Bookshelf publisher Paul Fuhr says. "'Taming the Wild Things in My Head' is a deceptively complex account of one man's addiction. Griggs has plunged you into the chaos of his past. We couldn't be prouder to help put this story out there."

Fuhr discovered the memoir via Anna David's coaching program for writers, which walks 10 students at a time through the process of writing and selling their book proposals. Out of each group of 10, David and a committee select one author to receive a meeting with agent Alexis Hurley of Inkwell Management and publisher Fuhr. While there's no guarantee of publication, Fuhr leapt at the opportunity to be the first to publish Griggs.

Griggs, an Oregon-based attorney, is a bit shell-shocked by his sudden transition into a creative career, admitting he applied for the coaching program solely so he could find catharsis through unearthing his most challenging experiences.

"After more than forty years of keeping dark secrets buried deep within me, I had two choices," Griggs says. "I could either lose my sanity and likely die an active addict, or I could release them. Fortunately, I was guided to release them."

David admits that selecting Griggs for the meeting with Hurley and Fuhr was a bit like Sophie's Choice. "I somehow keep ending up with the most talented students I could have imagined," she says. "They're all survivors who have incredible stories to tell. But ultimately, I felt I had no choice but to help the world discover this book."

Zephyr Bookshelf expects to release "Taming the Wild Things in My Head" this Christmas.

Commitment to Excellence: Union Institute & University salutes law enforcement professionals nationwide during National Police Week

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Union Institute & University is proud to salute law enforcement professionals nationwide during National Police Week, May 13 - 19, 2018 and honored to celebrate its commitment to educating the law enforcement community with a rigorous and research based Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management.

"Union is committed to educating the law enforcement profession. The UI&U Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management is an innovative program that was created by and for law enforcement professionals," said Paul Brugman, CJM Chair. "The curriculum provides real world application. We employ experts in the law enforcement field as instructors. I think the UI&U commitment is evident in the over 6,300* law enforcement officers nationwide who chose Union for their Criminal Justice Management degree."

The stringent curriculum requires law enforcement students to interpret and analyze current issues in the field, apply contemporary techniques within a justice organization, critique policy and service delivery, and apply ethical theories in a contemporary environment.

CJM alumni (2002) and Master of Arts History & Culture student Jason Bassett, a California police lieutenant, found UI&U's commitment to educating the law enforcement community to be exactly what he was looking for in a program.

"Union Institute and University supports law enforcement by offering distance learning degree programs in diverse fields making it possible to complete educational goals while working full time. This may enhance promotion opportunities or lead to jobs in other fields upon retirement," said Bassett. "I liked the format and way that the classes were structured. I had not been in a formal academic setting for a long time. In about five years, I plan to teach at the community college level and I chose Union when I started searching for a master's program. Distance learning was going to be my only option, so I chose Union based on my positive previous experience and the fact that a program in History and Culture was offered."

Sgt. Charlie Johnson, Jr. (2017 CJM alumni) an officer in the Dade County area, credits his Union degree for expanding his career choices.

"This degree has helped me close a chapter in my life that had been opened for 22 years. It has expanded my professional growth by opening doors that were previously inaccessible. In my agency promotion above the rank of captain requires a four-year degree. I know I am qualified if I choose to move up the ranks."

CJM (2013) and Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) (2015) alumna Elena Moton, an officer in the Cincinnati area, credits her degrees from Union for her career trajectory.

"I was a sergeant when I started at Union and now I am a lieutenant. My study habits from Union helped me to study for the lieutenant exam. Going to college is an enlightening experience. The process requires you to open your eyes, to think and analyze. I am now aspiring to be a captain and an assistant chief. As a police officer who works in the community, I find that people expect you to have a college degree. A college degree opens doors."

After completion of the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management law enforcement professionals can choose to enter the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) degree to further the career climb. "The MSOL is a perfect fit for the professional who wants to move up in ranks," said Brugman. "The program is designed to provide solutions to complex issues faced by today's professional."

Union pioneered higher education options for the working adult. The CJM program provides a flexible online delivery that allows the law enforcement professional to work fulltime. The program also connects the student to site coordinators who provide personal attention not available at other universities.

Many law enforcement professionals are veterans. The Union in Veterans program assists veterans in completing his or her degree with scholarships and a living stipend.

Union is recognized as a Military Friendly School and is one of only eight schools that form the Fraternal Order of Police University.

Energy savings project with Energy Optimizers, USA, expected to save Shelby County Board of Developmental Disabilities more than $15,000 annually

TIPP CITY, Ohio -- The Shelby County Board of Developmental Disabilities (DD) expects to save more than $15,000 annually after making energy efficient improvements to its lighting and HVAC systems in partnership with Energy Optimizers, USA.

Over the course of 12 months, Energy Optimizers, USA, retrofitted the interior lighting in the organization's north and south buildings with high-efficiency LEDs. The project also included energy-efficient upgrades to the Board's building controls system. The lighting comes with a 10-year material warranty and is expected to net the organization a nearly $9,000 rebate from Dayton Power & Light.

"Every dollar we receive is best used in service to our community," said Travis Mayabb, Facilities Manager. "These improvements are going to result in a better environment for our staff and clients and more resources to invest in our programs and services."

The lighting enhancements alone will deliver immediate savings to the organization. LED lighting uses an average of 60 percent less energy than the systems it replaced. The lighting also lasts five times longer, which will save on long-term maintenance and replacement costs.

The Board's staff and clients will also benefit from more comfortable offices and public spaces. LED lighting offers a quality of light that is very close to natural sunlight, which creates better-lit and more relaxed environments. Also, LEDs do not have the hum and flicker associated with fluorescent lighting. The enhanced building controls will provide greater stability and tighter control over building temperatures.

"Through these smart and cost-effective improvements, the Shelby County Board of DD will benefit from a quick payback that will continue to add up over time," said Greg Smith, president of Energy Optimizers, USA. "The long-term savings will benefit all of the organization's stakeholders, from local taxpayers to the residents it serves every day."

Partnership with Energy Optimizers, USA, expected to save Austintown Local Schools an estimated $153,000 annually

TIPP CITY, Ohio -- Austintown Local Schools expects to save more than $153,000 annually by transitioning to LED lighting in partnership with Energy Optimizers, USA, an energy management solutions firm.

Starting in April Energy Optimizers, USA will retrofit the interior and exterior lighting systems at all five of the district's buildings with LED systems. Lighting in the Austintown Falcons' football stadium and baseball field will also undergo an overhaul to the more energy-efficient lighting solution. The lighting comes with a 25-year material warranty.

"Our 2020 Strategic Plan calls for us ensure our students are achieving at or above grade-level expectations and to demonstrate fiscal responsibility to our community," said Superintendent Vincent Colaluca. "This project is going to help us accomplish both by delivering tremendous savings that we can direct to our classrooms."

The savings will be gained through both improved energy efficiency and lower maintenance costs. LED lighting uses an average of 60 percent less energy and lasts five times longer than the systems being replaced. The district will also make use of First Energy incentives, which is expected to net an additional $50,000 in energy rebates.

The benefits to the district's students and staff extend well beyond cost savings. LED lighting offers a quality of light that is very close to natural sunlight, which will result in better-lit and more comfortable learning environments. Also, LEDs do not have the hum and flicker associated with fluorescent lighting, making it an ideal lighting system for special needs classrooms.

The partnership also includes funding for a district-wide Energy Education & Awareness Program that will invite students, staff, and the community to develop, promote and implement numerous energy savings and sustainability programs throughout the district while being aligned with the state testing standards.

The district "Green Team" will include scholarships for participating students, an educational trip to The Ohio State University to build a district "Energy Bike," a 5KW solar array to supplement classroom lessons and numerous after-school activities to promote and educate the students, staff, and community about energy efficiency and sustainability.

"Austintown students and staff will benefit from a lighting program that doesn't just save the district money; they will also gain real-world insights into STEM-related concepts and career opportunities," said Greg Smith, president of Energy Optimizers, USA. "And that's exactly why we do what we do - we want to help our school partners save money, save the environment and prepare their students to do great things in the world."

Elmwood Local Schools partners with Energy Optimizers, USA, on energy improvement project

TIPP CITY, Ohio -- Elmwood Local Schools expects to save $63,792 annually by partnering with Energy Optimizers, USA, to upgrade the district's lighting systems to energy-efficient LEDs. The interior lighting of the district's K-12 building will be retrofitted with LEDs, as will the interior and exterior lighting of the Community Center. The project will include a 10-year material warranty on the lighting systems.

The changeover will deliver immediate savings to the district. LED lighting uses an average of 60 percent less energy than the systems being replaced. It also lasts five times longer than traditional systems, which will reduce long-term operations and maintenance costs. Also, the lighting puts out less heat, which will help keep cooling bills in check during warmer months.

In return for improving its energy efficiency, the district is expected to receive more than $30,000 in incentives from the Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative.

"In our district, we strive to balance fiscal conservativism with a rich selection of academic and extracurricular opportunities for our students," said Superintendent Tony Borton. "This project will support both of those objectives while creating classroom environments that are more conducive for learning."

LED lighting's benefits extend well beyond energy conservation. LEDs do not have the hum and flicker associated with fluorescent lighting, making it an ideal lighting system for special needs classrooms. The quality of light is also close to natural sunlight, which will be welcomed students and members of the community center alike.

"Making the switch to state-of-the-art LED lighting systems is a commonsense strategy that provides school districts with more control over their budgets," noted Greg Smith, Energy Optimizers, USA president. "Directing more taxpayer dollars toward the classroom and Community Center amenities, rather than the local utility, works to the benefit of the district's students, staff, and community alike."

Fort Recovery Local Schools expects to net a $17,000 utility rebate through energy savings project completed with Energy Optimizers, USA

TIPP CITY, Ohio -- Energy Optimizers, USA, has completed an aggressive energy savings project that is expected to save Fort Recovery Local Schools more than $30,000 a year in utility costs.

The district also anticipates receiving a Dayton Power& Light rebate of more than $17,000 because of the work.

Beginning in late winter, Energy Optimizers USA, retrofitted the district's interior lighting with LED systems, replaced the district's boilers and boiler controls with state-of-the-art energy efficient equipment, and made energy-saving enhancements to its kitchens and transportation garage. The energy savings attained will be equivalent to preserving 81 acres of trees or removing 53 cars from the road.

Most of the work was funded through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission's House Bill 264 program, enabling the district to make these cost-cutting improvements at no expense to taxpayers while ensuring the guaranteed savings of the project are met or exceeded.

"The ability to qualify for such a substantial rebate is both a benefit to our community and a confirmation of our strategy to save taxpayer dollars by investing in energy-saving features," said Superintendent Justin Firks. "We couldn't have been more pleased with the quality of solutions and work provided by Energy Optimizers, USA."

Energy Optimizers, USA, has also provided funding to launch an Energy Education and Awareness Program in the district. The program will involve students, staff and the community in developing, promoting and implementing numerous energy savings and sustainability programs throughout the district.

"Projects like these, where the district, their students, and their local taxpayers win, are the reason we are here," said Greg Smith, president of Energy Optimizers, USA. "By investing in relatively simple improvements, Fort Recovery Local Schools has improved its classrooms and its bottom line."

Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Local Schools’ utility savings more than $6,000 above projections through a partnership with Energy Optimizers, USA

TIPP CITY, Ohio -- Two years after completing a comprehensive energy savings project with Energy Optimizers, USA, Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Local Schools has exceeded projected savings on its utility bills by more than $6,000 annually.

In 2016, the district executed a $1.8 million project to transition all lighting to LED systems and to make energy-saving upgrades to its boilers, chillers, HVAC temperature controls, and kitchen equipment. At the time, the district was the first in Ohio to upgrade all lighting systems to LED.

The district expected to save just over $134,000 a year on electrical and gas utilities, but actual savings have exceeded $140,00 annually. The savings are normalized or adjusted to account for outliers in weather conditions and utility rates.

"Fiscal conservation is significant in our district, which is why we partnered with Energy Optimizers, USA, and invested in cost-effective, energy-saving solutions throughout our district," said Jeff Lewis, Interim Superintendent. "Clearly those investments are paying off as substantial savings to our bottom line."

The savings will continue to add up for the district over the long term, according to Greg Smith, president of Energy Optimizers, USA.

"Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Local Schools will continue to see savings not just in its electric and gas usage, but also in long-term operations and maintenance costs simply because these systems last longer," said Smith. "This level of forward-thinking by the district's leadership is the reflection of a community that has made funding the education of its youth a priority."

Energy project with Energy Optimizers, USA, nets Monroe Local Schools more than $75,000 in cost savings

TIPP CITY, Ohio -- Just one year after completing a project to reduce its energy consumption, Monroe Local Schools has surpassed projections for cost savings, Energy Optimizers, USA found.

In 2016, the district engaged Energy Optimizers, USA, to replace all of its interior and exterior lighting with LED systems. The project also included the installation of HVAC controls and a high-efficiency boiler at the district's 2-12 building.

The district anticipated saving approximately $74,000 annually, but an analysis has found the savings exceeded $75,000 in the first year. Electrical consumption is down 18.6 percent and fuel usage is down 17.4 percent. The savings are normalized for weather.

The savings will continue to build annually by reducing both energy demand and maintenance costs. That's because LED lighting uses an average of 60 percent less energy and lasts five times longer than the systems that were replaced.

"These relatively simple and straightforward investments in energy efficiency have yielded a tremendous savings, which is critical as we balance the needs of our fast-growing student population with limited resources," said Monroe Local Schools Superintendent Phil Cagwin. "At the same time, we have improved our learning environments with higher-quality lighting, better air quality and more comfortable classroom temperatures."

The majority of the work was funded through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission's House Bill 264 program, enabling the district to make these cost-cutting improvements at no expense to taxpayers while ensuring the guaranteed savings of the project are met or exceeded.

"This is a great story for Monroe Local Schools, its staff and students, and the community it serves," said Greg Smith, president of Energy Optimizers, USA. "By making fiscally sound investments in the future, the district has redirected dollars from the utility companies to its classrooms, where they will have the most impact."
