Mentors Needed for Children Experiencing Parental Incarceration

AUSTIN, Texas -- Seedling, a non-profit organization serving children who have an incarcerated parent, is seeking business partners and individuals to mentor children in Central Texas school districts during the 2021-22 school year. The organization served 349 children last school year and expects to significantly increase the number of children served during the 2021/2022 school year.

Seedling's mission is to mitigate the impact of parental incarceration on children in Central Texas through school-based mentoring. The non-profit organization matches children with mentors in Austin ISD, Del Valle ISD, Hays Consolidated ISD, KIPP Public Schools, and Pflugerville ISD. Since 2005, Seedling has served over 2300 children who have a parent in prison or jail.

There are an estimated 8,000 kids that have a parent in jail or prison in the four-county area of Travis, Hays, Bastrop, and Williamson County. No system, including criminal justice and schools, reliably ask the question of whether a child is affected or is in need, due to parental incarceration. The organization began mentoring children of incarcerated parents due to the request of principals in local school districts.

"Our community needs to be doing all it can to support the children in Central Texas who have an incarcerated parent. It is imperative that we all find ways to support Seedling's mentoring program so these kids have the opportunity to reach their full potential," said Austin Mayor Steve Adler.

Based in best practices for mentoring, Seedling trains and supports its mentors, specializing in the challenges surrounding being a child who has an incarcerated parent. Mentors meet with their mentee once weekly during lunch personally or virtually, at one of the 100 public schools partnering with Seedling. The organization pairs the volunteer's skills and interests with a child who has similar interests.

"Mentoring helps employees adopt skills and behaviors at work that can make a real difference for both the individual and the employer in today's socially conscious workforce. More importantly, the reward for both the mentee and volunteer is life changing," said Dan Leal, Seedling Executive Director.

Seedling matches average 24 months which positively contributes to the students' personal development, resilience, school engagement, attendance, and disciplinary outcomes. Eighty-five percent of Seedling's 2019-20 high school seniors aspired to enroll in college. More than double the number of Seedling students confirmed college enrollment than did a matched comparison group of students.

Individuals can go to the Seedling website https://seedlingmentors.org/mentor to complete the new mentor application or call Seedling at (512) 323-6371 to inquire about an information session for a group.

Caregivers who are seeking school-based mentoring for their child in school districts partnering with Seedling should contact the school's counseling department.

About Seedling:

Seedling has provided school-based mentoring for over 2300 Central Texas children impacted by parental incarceration since 2005. Seedling is seeking mentors to serve children during the 2021-22 school year as schools allows mentors to return campuses. Seedling is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Tax ID #74-2841791. Encore Green Environmental Names First Re-Furbished Water Treatment Unit for Delzon ‘Possum’ Elenburg

GRANBURY, Texas -- Encore Green Environmental names their first water treatment unit based on the NOMAD technology in honor of Henry "Possum" Elenburg for his pioneering work in treatment of industrial water.

"At Encore Green, we stand on the shoulders of many giants who have brought us to our place in history today, as we now put this formerly produced water to beneficial use for agriculture and conservation," says Encore Green Co-Founder Marvin Nash. "Possum Elenburg was a truly an innovative man who would get into the field and make things happen. He is how we are able to serve the agricultural and energy communities today."

In the early 2000's Elenburg conceived that energy industry by-product water could be treated and put to uses instead of simply disposing of it into the ground or though evaporation. He partnered with engineer Jacob Halldorson and together they created what became known as NOMAD. Like many great partnerships they each contributed to bring the innovation to life.

"My family and I are honored to have the first unit named for my father and the intent of the water to be used in the agriculture industry is a dream fulfilled," says son Bryan Elenburg.

Elenburg was a highly successful entrepreneur in the energy industry. Together with Halldorson, they were able to start using their technology in the Barnett Shale oil fields during its boom.

Encore Green Environmental is the only company to not only receive permits for surface application of this cleaned water, but also have successfully executed it in Wyoming in 2020. Encore developed the patent-pending process of Conservation By-Design™, which ensures only safe water goes on the soil by water and soil fail-safe testing and continual soil monitoring.

Little did Elenburg know that his work of years past would help create climate wellness and soil health. The Possum has led the way. He made a living in Energy, but Agriculture was his passion. Today Encore Green Environmental continues that vision.

Pure Transplant Solutions, LLC Announces Research Collaboration with the Department of Surgery at the University of Cambridge

AUSTIN, Texas -- Pure Transplant Solutions, LLC (PTS), a collaboration driven biotechnology company focused on the development of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-based diagnostics and therapeutics within the field of transplantation, is proud to announce that it has entered into a research collaboration with The University of Cambridge Abdominal Transplant Centre at Addenbrooke's Hospital, to develop new diagnostic strategies for DSA monitoring and characterization in transplantation.

The research is being led by Dr. Vasilis Kosmoliaptsis, Honorary Consultant Abdominal Transplant and HPB Surgeon, and Dr. Rico Buchli, Vice President Products and Services and Director of Research at PTS and its parent company, Pure Protein, LLC. The research project aims to investigate the relationship between alloantibody-HLA binding strength and the capacity of alloantibodies to mediate graft injury in solid organ transplantation, with the goal to develop and validate new HLA-antibody assays that will define the future thinking of antibody affinity in transplant rejection.

Dr. Kosmoliaptsis's group and collaborators have recently developed a novel immunoassay (microfluidic antibody affinity profiling) that enables quantification of antibody affinity and concentration directly in patient sera thus allowing clinical translation of this research for patient benefit. If successful, such data will potentially facilitate a new diagnostic tool to quantify alloantibody-mediated immunological risk that may enable improved access to transplantation, reduce the risk of humoral rejection, and improve transplant outcomes.

"Antibody affinity matters, and we believe that this work has the potential to transform clinical practice in transplantation," Dr. Kosmoliaptsis stated. "The provision of purified and naturally folded HLA reagents by PTS for use in our kinetics experiments provides an exciting opportunity to increase our understanding of the pathogenic potential of HLA-specific antibodies in the context of transplantation and to improve long-term transplant outcomes."

"This research will provide compelling new evidence supporting the role of DSA affinity assessment in risk stratification of donor-specific humoral responses. We foresee that this new insight into HLA antibody kinetics will provide new strategies and diagnostics that could help improve individual patient care and ultimately increase the lifespan of transplants," said Dr. Buchli.

About Pure Transplant Solutions, LLC

Pure Transplant Solutions, LLC was founded in 1999 in order to leverage the leading research in HLA protein of parent company, Pure Protein, LLC, into solutions to address a growing list of needs in organ transplantation.

About Pure Protein, LLC

Pure Protein, LLC is a biotechnology company funded and managed by Emergent Technologies, Inc. that is focused on the development and commercialization of proprietary technologies related to the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system, formed and exclusively licensed from the University of Oklahoma. Pure Protein, in conjunction with its affiliates and subsidiaries, aims to bring novel therapies and diagnostic tools to patients across a wide range of application areas spanning from therapeutic development in the fields of oncology, autoimmunity, and infectious disease, to antibody mediated rejection in transplantation.

Through its new ecommerce website, http://www.hlaprotein.com/, Pure Protein now offers academic and commercial researchers the ability to purchase individual HLA reagents to detect, profile, and monitor allele-specific immune responses, as well as HLA peptide epitope binding services to aid in improving the design of vaccination and therapeutic targeting strategies.
