Last year, the community selected Captain Alfred "Benny" Ashley. Benny served the Phoenix Fire Department from 1942 through the end of 1973. He served as a medic at Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands in the South Pacific.

After returning to his firefighting career Benny led the Phoenix firefighters union as the President of IAFF Local 493 in the 1960's. In 1968 his idea for a statewide, combined, firefighters and police officers pension system was signed into law by AZ Governor Jack Williams to create the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS).

Our selected 2020 winner was Master Sergeant Keith Tucker, a veteran who honorably served our country for 24 years in the Air Force and was stationed at Luke Air Force Base. This opportunity came at the perfect time for Mr. Tucker, as he and his wife Diana were moving into their new home that had an existing unit that was over 15 years old.

The President of ACE Home Services, John Trimble served as an Army Infantryman and then a Special Forces Officer - or Green Beret - for more than 13 years. Working closely with various international special operations units, John primarily worked counterterror and counter drug operations across multiple deployments to Afghanistan and South America, receiving two Bronze Star medals, a Meritorious Service Medal, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge amongst other awards and citations.

Prior to being medically retired as a Major, John's final military assignment was serving as an advisor and lead strategist for a senior military commander at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. The Director of Marketing, James Sesay, is also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

Regarding the overall goal of the campaign, James says, "Too often many of us take the sacrifices that led to our independence and current freedoms for granted. 1st Annual ‘Step Up In Surprise’ Event To Offer Outreach, Social Services, Food and Music To Veterans October 9

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- According to VetLink Foundation, military veterans who have honorably served our nation often return from deployments in need of various social services like job placement, health care, and mental health services. Some end up homeless. Sometimes they just need a friendly shoulder to lean on or to simply meet up and talk with fellow vets.

That's why veterans throughout the greater Phoenix Metro area will want to mark Saturday, October 9th on their calendars. That's the date the 1st Annual VetLink Foundation Step Up in Surprise event will be held at the TechCelerator complex on Bell Rd in Surprise.

The event, which runs from 9am-2pm, will offer veterans access to numerous social services all in one place. There will be service providers offering assistance and advice on housing and shelter referral, mental health services, DOL employment and job training assistance, veterans benefits counseling, social and community services, legal advice and services, financial literacy, personal care/hygiene kits, 3-D mammography screenings, and even clothing.

Guests will also be able to enjoy special military attractions as well as plenty of food and music. The event is free and is open to any and all military veterans and their dependents.

Step Up In Surprise, which is supported by an award from the City of Surprise Community Outreach Program, is an event put on by the VetLink Foundation, a non-profit organization which began operations in 2019. The organization aims to connect veterans and their families with free services and opportunities that they may not be aware of. VetLink partners with volunteers, businesses, organizations, local, state, and national government services to provide and develop the services needed for veterans and their families in user-friendly ways. The organization's work in the community has drawn attention and praise from Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, himself a 25-year navy veteran.

ABOUT JACK L. TILLEY 12TH SERGEANT MAJOR OF THE ARMY, RETIRED

A native of Vancouver, Washington, Tilley was sworn in as the 12th Sergeant Major of the Army on June 23, 2000, and served until January 15, 2004. A career soldier, he had held many leadership positions within the Department of the Army and Unified Command environments.

Ohio Veterans Launch Camp Freeman GoFundMe campaign and website to begin construction on their first non-profit Veterans’ Retreat

NEWARK, Ohio -- Camp Freeman, a Veteran Owned Ohio Non-Profit 501(c)(3) has been established to support homeless, at-risk, disabled, and transitioning veterans. One of their Board Members, Timothy Godwin has already launched a highly successful PTSD Support Group, The Huddle, which is still active today. Another, Jacob Edgell, has spent most of his time in the past couple of years practicing and planning therapy opportunities for disabled Veterans including art, equine therapy, digital veterans' communities, and even volunteers as a counselor for veterans in his spare time through multiple online support groups. With over 15 years of combined experience serving veterans and active military members, the Board Members of Camp Freeman have witnessed what could only be described as Miraculous Transitions.

According to Army Veteran, Specialist Murphy who was homeless with a family of 5 near the onset of the Covid-19 crisis and is now transitioning into his own home in Southern Ohio: "I don't know where I'd be without Tim, Jake, and Chris. . .maybe on the side of the road...probably not good. My family and I got to stay with Chris and his family, and it was different than anything I'd seen. Seeing what they do for others makes it hard not to try every day and be a success story... I can't wait 'til I can come back and help some!"

The Camp Freeman Team has supported veterans in crisis, assisted with housing, provided counseling, sheltered veterans and their families, and most importantly have built supportive relationships with veterans of every background using only their own resources. Iwo Jima Memorial Midwest Project, Inc. Building New Iwo Jima Memorial – Updated with Correct Flag-raisers

RACINE, Wis. -- In tandem with 75th Anniversary of the flag-raising on Mt. Suribachi, the Iwo Jima Memorial Midwest Project (IJMM) is launching a nationwide program to build a new Iwo Jima Monument. The new statue will replace the faces of two flag-raisers that were misidentified with the actual Marines who participated.

Harold "Pie" Keller and Harold Schultz were identified by HQ USMC with the aid of FBI forensics as the Marines raising the flag. Therefore, the new IJMM statue will be the very first monument built that reflects the exact image of the photograph.

The raising of the US flag over Mount Suribachi, was the first foreign flag ever to fly on Japanese soil. The photograph of the flag raising was taken by AP photographer Joe Rosenthal. It became an iconic image of not only the battle, but of the War in the Pacific and one of the most reproduced photographs in the world.

For 36 days in February-March of 1945, the Battle of Iwo Jima Island saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Pacific War. In the five week battle American casualties reached 26,040 of which 6,821 Marines were killed and 23,573 wounded 33% of their available force, or one in every three that landed.

The new Monument will be placed in Racine, Wisconsin, just north of Chicago and South of Milwaukee. Racine is the home of Marine Corps League Detachment 346 that has been doing a Living Memorial Float of the flag-raising for over 74 years. The Marines hold the position of the famous statue for up to two hours in parades and various events.

The very first Iwo Jima Monument statue was molded as a table top version for review and approvals by the USMC. Sculptor Felix De Weldon used Johnson Floor Wax to form this statue. SC Johnson Wax Corporate HQ is in Racine.

World renowned Sculptor, Robert Bricker of the Bronze Craft Foundry in Charlottsville, Virginia will produce the 40 percent size of original size bronze monument. Bricker was the sculptor selected by National Parks to work on the restoration of the original statue in Arlington. The figures will be 13 feet tall. It will take 16 months to produce and weigh 20,000 lbs.

The two year, $4 Million dollar fundraising project is supported by all volunteer Marines, Veterans, Veterans Support Groups and dedicated civilians. The fundraising efforts are nationwide, supported with a wide range of merchandise for donors. Solicitation of Corporate sponsors is underway.

Once completed the Monument location will be used as a venue to host a variety of Veterans events and expand educational support elements for elementary schools. The Project will in-turn institute fund gathering efforts to support needy Veterans

BRADENTON, Fla. -- On Wednesday February 12, 2020 at 1 p.m., come meet and greet a ninety-six-year-old marine, Gene Christie, as he releases his CD containing a song to honor his fellow Marines in the 5th Division who won the Battle of Iwo Jima at great sacrifice.

The bloodiest battle in Marine Corp history, the Battle of Iwo Jima began over 75 years ago on February 19, 1945. It was very instrumental in the defeat of the Japanese during World War Two.

Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, Inc. Partners with SCI Mercer to Train Service Dogs for Veterans

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- It is with great pleasure that Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs announces its latest partnership, with the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution at Mercer. As part of our new partnership, incarcerated veterans will train some of our future service dogs, beginning at approximately 5 months of age, all while earning college credit.

The program is already underway, with our Founder & Chief Operating Officer, Carol Borden recently completing a full seven days of classes for the 12 selected incarcerated veterans, teaching them our comprehensive training regimen. While required to pass the written portion of the class with an 80% or better, we are proud to say that of the 12 participants, they all scored above 95%.

Now that they are ready to begin training, 4 young future service dogs are on their way to Mercer from our Florida headquarters and are scheduled to arrive at Mercer later this week.

Once they arrive, the dogs will remain with the inmates 24 hours a day, for several months, and will be participating daily in classes and public access-style learning adventures due to Mercer's unique design featuring a cafeteria, classrooms, hospital, auditorium, gymnasium, commissary and library - the conditions are perfect for re-creating public access-type scenarios for the dogs to train in.

The teams training dogs inside Mercer will be visited weekly or more by our Pennsylvania Regional Trainer, to ensure program compliance and monitor each dogs' progress as they go through our positive-reinforcement curriculum.

An additional key benefit of this program is that the selected incarcerated veterans will be earning college credits. This program will not only help the disabled Pennsylvania veterans who ultimately receive the donated service dogs; but it is teaching a new, marketable skillset and industry to those currently incarcerated.

"I have always been so inspired by the service and sacrifice of our American heroes," said Sen. Brooks, who worked for two years to bring the program to SCI Mercer. "The brotherhood that unites our veterans, and the healing power of a dog, have always impressed me as well. This transformative new program unites these special elements into one heart-warming support network, and is destined to produce benefits that will allow veterans to help other veterans in a life-changing way."
