LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Nov. 30 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — A specialized protocol for ovarian stimulation that can essentially eliminate the risks of Severe Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) in egg donors and IVF patients is currently in use at a Las Vegas infertility practice.
The technique, known as “Prolonged Coasting,” allows virtually all patients who show preliminary signs of OHSS to avoid any associated medical complications. It also allows these patients to continue with their egg donation or In Vitro Fertilization cycle without adverse affects on the patient or her cycle.
The technique of Prolonged Coasting was first developed and reported on in 1993 by Dr. Geoffrey Sher, co-founder of the Sher Institutes for Reproductive Medicine(SM)(SIRM(tm)). It has been used as a standard protocol at SIRM-Las Vegas and other SIRM offices throughout the country for several years.
“Prior to the development of Prolonged Coasting, patients who showed indications of OHSS would have their cycles cancelled to avoid potentially life-threatening medical complications and be immediately taken off their medications,” said Dr. Jeffrey Fisch, Medical Director of SIRM-Las Vegas and a Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist. “So in addition to the physical danger of OHSS, they also suffered the disappointment and financial loss of a canceled treatment cycle. In the past three years, we haven’t had a single donor or patient hospitalized for OHSS, which speaks to the effectiveness of the coasting protocol.” According to Dr. Fisch, about 1 patient in 30 has a propensity toward OHSS.
