With 'Brooklyn Monument: Jay Z Cares' pop-artist Daniel Edwards depicts Jay Z as a Care Bear pal with Funshine Bear on the rap mogul's shoulder wearing Leather Boxing Shorts from the Barneys New York collection, accompanied by six designer ornaments to be auctioned on eBay, with a share of the proceeds going to an organization that supports the ACLU's policies against racial profiling.

The work will be unveiled online this week, announced Cory Allen Contemporary Art.

"Jay Z cares," said Edwards, responding to Jay Z's involvement with Barneys earlier this month to form an advisory council concerning racial profiling, as a result of the ongoing negative press surrounding Barneys' racial profiling allegations following the release of Jay-Z's BNY SCC: A New York Holiday Collection. "Jay Z also shared valuable insight regarding proposed guidelines for future interactions between Barneys and the NYPD," added Edwards.

"With the Barneys controversy, I felt Jay Z was being victimized. He was the only person associated with Barneys who was being criticized for not breaking ties over their racial profiling policy, which is not fair," said Daniel Edwards.

Edwards's sculpture titled "Brooklyn Monument: Jay Z Cares," depicts a smiling, Brooklyn cap-wearing Jay Z surrounded by the Care Bears in clothing from his collaboration with Barneys New York: Tenderheart Bear sits atop Jay Z's head in a Barneys New York NYC NYC Tee; Do Your Best Bear wears the Mixed Exotics Brooklyn Cap by Just Don; Funshine Bear models En Noir Embroidered Leather Boxing Shorts; and Share Bear with Hublot Watch emblazoned belly wears The Elder Statesman Cashmere Ski Mask. The artist also created six holiday ornaments, which include a tribute to twerking, to be auctioned on eBay with a share of the proceeds going to an organization that supports the ACLU's policies against racial profiling.

"A Brooklyn-conscious 'celebpreneur' hired Daniel to design a line of ornaments that Jay Z wanted to include with his collection, but Barneys New York wanted to feature only clothing," said Cory Allen of Cory Allen Contemporary Art.

"We are still searching for an organization with which to share proceeds. We are inspired by the ACLU's Campaign Against Racial Profiling," said Cory Allen.

Father Junipero Serra, California Icon, Celebrates 300th Birthday on Sunday: Role in the Story of the Real Treasure Island Remembered

New Maritima Press says that John Amrhein, Jr., their author from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, made a surprising discovery while researching his award winning book, "Treasure Island: The Untold Story" (ISBN: 9780983084303). Father Junipero Serra played a pivotal role in this dramatic true story he has documented with a team of international researchers.

The Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, the Spanish galleon which carried Junipero Serra and his contemporary biographer, Francisco Palou, to Mexico in 1749, was the same ship whose treasure cargo from Mexico would find itself buried by pirates on a deserted Caribbean Island the following year.

"Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' almost never happened," explains John Amrhein, resident of the Outer Banks where the Wright Brothers made man's first powered flight. He owes an article by Maynard J. Geiger, a Franciscan, and modern biographer of the venerable Father Serra, which identified the galleon and linked his own research being done in the Spanish archives. Although Amrhein grew up in Richmond, Virginia, he immediately recognized who Junipero Serra was because of his Catholic school education.

The Guadalupe had left Cadiz, Spain, on August 28, 1749, under Captain Juan Manuel Bonilla. On board were twenty Franciscans as well as Dominican friars and cargo destined for Veracruz, Mexico. The Guadalupe was blown off course near Veracruz before encountering a hurricane that would bring the crew to total despair. Then, Father Serra and the friars joined in prayer and praise to St. Barbara whose feast was that day of December 4. "The storm ceased immediately and the opposing wind became so mild that within two days we anchored in Veracruz," reported Palou in his 1787 memoir.

After enduring ninety-nine days at sea, with a stop in Puerto Rico, Serra elected to walk to Mexico City from Veracruz rather than ride the horse that was offered to him. Junipero Serra would later found nine mission churches in California. San Carlos Borremeo, in Carmel, was not only his favorite but became his final resting place.

His link to Robert Louis Stevenson and Treasure Island did not end with the Guadalupe. In December of 1879, while Stevenson was visiting Monterey and his future wife, Fanny Osbourne, his soon-to-be brother-in-law took him to Father Serra's church in Carmel where Serra was buried in 1784 and then in ruins. Stevenson was so moved by the devotion of the Indians it brought tears to his eyes. He then wrote an article in the local paper pleading for donations to restore the mission. It almost seems that Father Serra repaid the favor, because the struggling and little known author would write "Treasure Island" shortly after his return to Scotland. It was his first, and probably his most recognizable, success. That tale of buried treasure revolves around a map dated 1750 that would lead Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver to the Caribbean Island where the treasure was buried.

"It's no coincidence to me," says Amrhein "It's a miracle." Amrhein also points out that this month marks the 130th anniversary of the publication of "Treasure Island."

Father Junipero Serra was beatified by the Vatican in 1988 after the miraculous healing of a nun attributed Serra's intervention the year before. All that is needed now to reach sainthood is one more miracle attributed to him. In Amrhein's eyes that's already been done. He believes that there probably would not have been a "Treasure Island" for Mr. Stevenson had the Guadalupe sank in 1749 taking Father Serra down with it. The history of California would have been quite different as well. In fact, there would be no "Pirates of the Caribbean" today either because "Treasure Island" is the franchise's cultural foundation.

Amrhein's first book, "The Hidden Galleon" (ISBN 978-0-9796872-0-4), describes the fate of the warship that escorted the Guadalupe and wrecked on Assateague Island, Virginia, and its role in the children's classic, "Misty of Chincoteague."

Pacific Pinball Museum Signs Letter of Intent to Secure Alameda Carnegie Library as its New Home

After more than a decade of preserving and promoting the game of pinball, the Pacific Pinball Museum (PPM) is excited to announce it has signed a Letter of Intent with the City of Alameda to restore the vacant Carnegie Library as their new home. This magnificent 1902 building has sat vacant since 1998. This location will more than triple the museum's display capacity. The facility will also provide space for community events, classrooms, exhibits and many other expansions to PPM's already exciting programs.

Since 2001, the museum has collected nearly a thousand pinball games but has only been able to display about 100 at their Webster Street location. A major portion of PPM's collection dates from the 1930s to '50s -- an era that has a certain accord with the library.

"It is extremely important to our mission that we occupy a building of historical significance," said PPM Board Chairman Larry Zartarian. "The 1902 Carnegie Library is a testament to American education and an ideal location for the PPM to educate visitors about art, science and history as related to pinball and its uniquely American heritage."

City Manager John Russo put forth an offer to lease the Carnegie Library and the attached property for 30 years. In return, PPM will be responsible for completing the restoration and bringing the Carnegie up to current day building code requirements. Projects will include re-doing the electrical, plumbing and sewer utilities as well as adding ADA accessibility a HVAC system and fire sprinklers will be incorporated into the building to help ensure its survival. After spending more than $4 million in retrofitting and plans for the library, the city began searching for a museum that could complete restoration of the building.

"The PPM has been bringing people to Alameda for over 10 years and has established itself as a stable and imaginative non-profit," said Alameda City Manager John Russo. "The prospect of having a pinball museum at the Carnegie is exciting and the City of Alameda looks forward to taking the next steps with PPM to make our common vision a reality."

PPM needs to raise some $3.5 million in the next two years in order to make "the Smithsonian of Pinball" in Alameda a reality. Dedicated to preserving pinball history, science and art, the PPM tells the incredible story of how American ingenuity combined with culture and our fun-loving nature to create the ultimate interactive kinetic art. PPM's collection spans an era of broad technological development that teaches about scientific advancement and pinball art's cultural reflection and impact on society.

Andrew Carnegie's donation toward ongoing education of the public should not be forgotten. Much like the Carnegie Library's story, pinball's story stands at a crossroads where it could be forgotten. The art, the technology, the American history behind pinball, could be lost to future generations if not for this effort.

If you are interested in helping, contact the PPM at info@pacificpinball.org or visit http://www.pacificpinball.org/ .

‘Sailing Through Pinball’ opens at the Pacific Pinball Museum August 30, 2013

Author: Pacific Pinball Museum
Dateline: Alameda, California (ALAMEDA, Calif.)  | Mon, 12 Aug 2013

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “The Pacific Pinball Museum is excited to announce the opening of a new art show celebrating the America's Cup Race with a collection of pinball machines and art featuring sailing and yachting: 'Sailing Through Pinball.'”

ARTICLE:

The Pacific Pinball Museum is excited to announce the opening of a new art show celebrating the America's Cup Race with a collection of pinball machines and art featuring sailing and yachting: "Sailing Through Pinball."

The show was curated by PPM artist and board member, Dan Fontes. "We are incredibly fortunate to be able to put together this rare collection of art with actual games from the early years of pinball," said Fontes. "Many collectors have come together to make this show possible."

Since the 1930s, pinball machines, a uniquely American invention and art form, were principally manufactured in Chicago and shipped to all corners of the world. Pinball was imbued with an optimistic, vibrant energy of adventure, excitement and escapism.

One of the more popular, yet relatively unrecognized themes that recurs in pinball art is sailing, yachting and racing boats. Sailing embodies the freedom, speed and skill of the sporty, carefree lifestyle of growing middle and upper classes. With the silk-screened art on the backglass, playfield and cabinet the standard format of pop bumpers, flippers, rollover buttons and targets were high-lighted and more appealing.

Some of the pinball artists and their bosses had sailboats or yachts to navigate Lake Michigan that were the inspiration for many designs.

This exhibition of sailing-related pinball art includes nine pinball machines, six back glasses and more than 30 photographs of pinball art and advertising with commentary. Beginning with early pinball in 1932, most of the exhibits date from the '30s, '40s and '50s and ends with one machine from the '80s. After its two-month run at the PPM the exhibit will be available for lease to other museums.

The backglass art combines picturesque seascapes with the competitive thrill and majesty of the gorgeous ships from the 1930s through 1980s. The show offers historical, aesthetic, and informative narrative with input from noted solo sailor Bruce Schwab.

With the America's Cup being held in the San Francisco Bay and teams based right here in Alameda, the show took on a personal meaning when tragedy struck. The museum houses most of their collection in a hangar across the road from Artemis, the Swedish contenders' headquarters. After seeing the team practice throughout the year, PPM staff personally felt the loss of Artemis teammate Andrew "Bart" Simpson. The tragedy inspired PPM staff to highlight this incredible sport.

"The PPM wants to show support of the America's Cup Race and promote Alameda and our museum," said PPM director Michael Schiess. "This show, sprung from a tragic event, brings the fun, beauty and skill of sailing to the forefront in tribute to the America's Cup competitors."

EVENT LOCATION:
The Pacific Pinball Museum is located at 1510 Webster St. in Alameda, California. "Sailing through Pinball" is on display during regular museum hours: Tuesdays through Thursdays 2 to 9 p.m., Fridays 2 p.m. to midnight, Saturdays 11 a.m. to midnight and Sundays 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Pacific Pinball Museum is a 501(c)3 non-profit.

Nude Pregnant Kim Kardashian ‘Fertility Statue’ Unveiling in L.A.

Author: Daniel Edwards
Dateline: Los Angeles, California (LOS ANGELES, Calif.)  | Thu, 23 May 2013

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “A nude pregnant sculpture of Kim Kardashian with her belly fully accessible for gallery-goers to rub for 'good luck' is set for L.A. exhibit. The statue joins the celebrity baby sculptures created recently by artist Daniel Edwards; celebrating the beauty of celebrity pregnancy. The work, part of the artist's 'Celebrity Baby Boomer' series that began with the 2006 controversial sculpture 'Monument to Pro-Life,' which depicted a nude Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug, will be revealed at LAB ART Gallery in Los Angeles.”

A R T I C L E:

A nude pregnant sculpture of Kim Kardashian with her belly fully accessible for gallery-goers to rub for 'good luck' is set for L.A. exhibit. The statue joins the celebrity baby sculptures created recently by artist Daniel Edwards; celebrating the beauty of celebrity pregnancy. The recent work, part of the artist's 'Celebrity Baby Boomer' series that began with the 2006 controversial sculpture 'Monument to Pro-Life,' which depicted a nude Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug, will be revealed at LAB ART Gallery in Los Angeles.

The life-size full-figured nude Kardashian sculpture titled "L.A. Fertility" stands curvaceous and proud, with lactiferous breasts, protruding navel and legs akimbo, and features a voluminous belly "designed to entice visitors to give a respectful rub for good luck and success," says publicist Cory Allen.

Other works in the exhibit will include bronzes of Baby Kimye, depicted as a chubby-cheek-cherub with a swirl design pattern shaved in the hair and the Royal Baby, slumbering peacefully in the crown Queen Elizabeth wore as a princess, cast at the Cal State foundry currently managed by Edwards. The artist's prenatal portraits of the angel-winged celebrity fetuses titled "Womb Mates" will also be on display.

"I was inspired by the beauty of Kim Kardashian and felt quite put-off by the media's criticism of her weight gain during pregnancy," said artist Daniel Edwards. "Such criticism should be off limits."

"We live in a media-absorbed culture where anyone can access and share a celebrity's most intimate moments," said Cory Allen. "Daniel visually captures 'that' intimacy."

An auction hosted by Google headquarters recently featured limited edition prints of the Baby Kimye sculpture printed by L.A. based Intellectual Property Prints for Venice Art Walk's annual benefit to provide health care to families in need.

"L.A. Fertility" will debut at LAB ART Gallery, on June 5, 2013 at 11 a.m., located at 217 S. La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles, CA. For more info, contact Cory Allen at 323-393-3115 or http://www.cacanet.com/ .

Leaked 3D Ultrasounds of Kimye and the Duchess of Cambridge: Prenatal Portraits of Celebrity Babies in Upcoming L.A. Unveiling

Author: Cory Allen Contemporary Art
Dateline: Los Angeles, California (LOS ANGELES, Calif.)  | Fri, 03 May 2013

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Leaked 3D ultrasounds of Socialite Kim Kardashian and Duchess of Cambridge Catherine 'Kate' Middleton have been fabricated into works of art by pop-culture artist Daniel Edwards; concluding his 'Celebrity Baby Boomer' series that began with the 2006 controversial sculpture 'Monument to Pro-Life,' which depicted a nude Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug, at select venues in the Los Angeles area this summer, announces Cory Allen Contemporary Art.”

A R T I C L E:

Leaked 3D ultrasounds of Socialite Kim Kardashian and Duchess of Cambridge Catherine "Kate" Middleton have been fabricated into works of art by pop-culture artist Daniel Edwards; concluding his "Celebrity Baby Boomer" series that began with the 2006 controversial sculpture "Monument to Pro-Life," which depicted a nude Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug, at select venues in the Los Angeles area this summer, announces Cory Allen Contemporary Art.

The prenatal portraits of the winged celebrity fetuses titled "Special K and Little Grape," depicts the unborn babies of the expecting parents of Hollywood Super couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West and British Royal couple Prince William and Kate Middleton. Baby Kimye (Special K) is depicted as a chubby-cheeked-cherub with angelic curls, and 'Ks' shaved in the hair.

The royal baby (Little Grape), who resembles Prince William as an infant, sucks its thumb and wears the crown Queen Elizabeth wore as a princess for King George VI's coronation. The slumbering pair floats in harmony, appearing as womb-mates.

"I drew upon the artistic influences of Hans Holbein, King's Painter to King Henry VIII and contemporary baby photographer Anne Geddes," said Daniel Edwards, "but the current ultrasound technology helped me to create the portraits of these babies while they are still in the womb."

In preparation of the statue for the celebrity babies, the artist made pilgrimages to the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. to study Hans Holbein's Portrait of Edward VI as a Child from 1538, and to New Zealand to meet with Anne Geddes.

"The media frenzy and the public's fascination with celebrity babies has hit a fever pitch with Britney Spears, then Suri Cruise, Octomom, and Angelina Jolie's twins, to which, Daniel has created all into works of art," said Cory Allen. "And it is no wonder we see a spike in teen pregnancies when sensational headlines about celebrity pregnancies occur."

"Special K and Little Grape" will soon debut later this summer at select locations in Los Angeles, California, to be announced June 2013. For more info, contact Cory Allen at 323-393-3115 or visit http://www.cacanet.com/ .

Pinball is back! An arcade and pinball gaming staple that stood in downtown Columbia for more than 25 years before closing its doors is back on Broadway. The official Grand Opening of Gunther's Games is scheduled for Saturday April 27, with activities running throughout the evening.

Lifelong Columbians will remember the original Gunther's that stood at 1106 E. Broadway until it closed in 2007. With no other place downtown to play classic games such as Galaga, Ms. Pacman and Donkey Kong, game enthusiast Wesley Upchurch felt the time was right to bring back the original arcade.

It's not just classic games that line the walls of the arcade. At the new Gunther's Games players can also play modern games such as Guitar Hero, Big Buck Hunter, and Mario Kart 2.

The new location at 923 E. Broadway, will have a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. followed by a wide variety of promotions, giveaways, and tournaments. From 4 to 6 p.m. KCMQ will announce the winners of its multigame high score competition, which has been running for the last week as part of Gunther's soft opening phase.

BXR radio is giving away tickets to shows and music festivals from 6 - 8 p.m. And at 9 p.m. there is a Power Putt golf challenge and at 10 p.m. challengers can face of head to head in the racing tournament, presented by Sports Radio 100.1. Additionally, there will be free subs, giveaways, and contests going on all night.

"The real fun," Upchurch says, "is challenging friends to games that bring back memories of times past and making new ones with your children. With a whole wall of pinballs, it's an experience for all to share."

MONOPOLY Game ‘Comes to Life’ in L.A. Exhibit

Author: Cory Allen Contemporary Art
Dateline: Los Angeles, California (LOS ANGELES, Calif.)  | Tue, 05 Mar 2013

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “CACA (Cory Allen Contemporary Art) announces that L.A. street artist 'ALEC Monopoly' will bring the game of MONOPOLY to life at LAB ART Gallery in Los Angeles, where the artist plans to sell one of his popular pieces for MONOPOLY money and create a designer game piece with Actor Adrien Brody's '64 Pontiac Catalina.”

A R T I C L E:

CACA (Cory Allen Contemporary Art) announces that L.A. street artist "ALEC Monopoly" will bring the game of MONOPOLY to life at LAB ART Gallery in Los Angeles, where the artist plans to sell one of his popular pieces for MONOPOLY money and create a designer game piece with actor Adrien Brody's '64 Pontiac Catalina.

"Park Place," ALEC Monopoly's first solo show in Los Angeles, will showcase 360 of the artist's past-to-current paintings as seen on the streets worldwide, primarily featuring the artist's satirical use of the iconic mascot from Hasbro's MONOPOLY board game, Monopoly Man (a.k.a. Mr. Monopoly, Rich "Uncle" Pennybags).

"MONOPOLY has always been a great way to learn how the world turns," said the artist. "And with all games, as in life, we have the opportunity to start-over in order to succeed."

"By using imagery from the game, I think the artist could inspire people to earn money in what is still a tough economy," said LAB ART's Iskander Lemseffer.

The artist plans to sell one of his popular paintings for $3 million in MONOPOLY money, which equates to 146 classic MONOPOLY board games that come currently stocked with $20,580 in MONOPOLY money.

"ALEC and LAB ART will be the first artist and gallery to make a MONOPOLY money transaction," said publicist Cory Allen. "MONOPOLY money is no longer play money."

Actor Adrien Brody will land on "Park Place" opening night with his 1964 Pontiac Catalina, which carries a $500,000 price tag. The Oscar(R)-winning actor is furnishing the collector car to be painted for the event as a real-life designer game piece by the L.A. Street Artist.

"I'm proud to support ALEC's vision," said Brody. "His work portrays a positive outlook in ways that reminds us that there is always a solution to a problem."

"Park Place" will open to the public at the world's largest street art gallery, LAB ART Gallery, owned by brother and sister duo, Iskander Lemseffer and Rachel Joelson, on March 14, 2013 at 7 p.m., located at 217 S. La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles, CA. For more info, contact Cory Allen at 323-393-3115 or visit http://www.LabArtGallery.com/ .

Downey Jr., LiLo, and Swift Represent Celebrity Past, Present, and Future in LA Exhibit

Author: Cory Allen Contemporary Art
Dateline: Los Angeles, California (LOS ANGELES, Calif.)  | Thu, 17 Jan 2013

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Infamous 'Street Artist' XVALA, famous for invading the residential trash of celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher and Justin Bieber and tech icons Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, has set his sights on Robert Downey Jr., Lindsay Lohan, and Taylor Swift for his latest exhibit 'The Tonight Show with Celebrity Chimp' at Lab Art Gallery in L.A., announces Cory Allen Contemporary Art.”

A R T I C L E:

Infamous "Street Artist" XVALA, famous for invading the residential trash of celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher and Justin Bieber and tech icons Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, has set his sights on Robert Downey Jr., Lindsay Lohan, and Taylor Swift for his latest exhibit "The Tonight Show with Celebrity Chimp" at Lab Art Gallery in Los Angeles, announces Cory Allen Contemporary Art (CACA).

To represent the past, present, and future of celebrity arcs based on their individual confrontation with hardship in the spotlight, XVALA has invaded the residential trash of celebrities Robert Downey Jr., Lindsay Lohan, and Taylor Swift, for his latest series of paintings.

A limited edition series of paintings imbued with reflecting powder created from broken down glass that was collected and mixed from all three celebrity's residential trash comprise the exhibit, which features a work of L.A. street art by the artist, appropriated by NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" for use as the backdrop for musical guests.

"The appropriated image is the artist's signature piece," said Cory Allen about the chimpanzee head image with google-eyes and heart-shaped smeared lipstick, called Celebrity Chimp. "The artist is re-appropriating it from 'The Tonight Show.'"

The paintings are stamped with the official "Tonight Show" logo.

Artist dumpster dives Hollywood to make a statement:

"Celebrities' personal lives become talk show related material to shape ratings - my work represents celebrity downfall and how a star can rise again," said XVALA. "Lindsay Lohan could learn from Robert Downey Jr. and Taylor Swift could learn from Lohan."

"A celebrity's personal life has become more entertaining than their professional work," said Cory Allen. "Hopefully the next generation will value art over entertainment."

The artist is dedicating his "Tonight Show" to programmer and internet activist, Aaron Swartz, in a heart-felt response to his passing. "Aaron's legacy has had a huge influence on my art," said XVALA.

"The Tonight Show with Celebrity Chimp" will debut at the world's largest street art gallery, LAB ART Gallery, on January 26, 2013 at 7 p.m., located at 217 S. La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles, Calif. For more info, contact Cory Allen at 323-393-3115 or visit www.LabArtGallery.com .
