Beyond Benign Launches Initiative to Support Green Chemistry Educators at Minority-Serving Higher Education Institutions

WILMINGTON, Mass. -- Beyond Benign announced a new Minority Serving Institution (MSI) Initiative, designed to provide green chemistry educational support for faculty and students at Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs). Being built and executed in collaboration with MSIs, the initiative is intended to ensure the next generation of world-class chemists and scientific leaders are reflective of the diversity of the global community and prepared to address sustainability through chemistry.

"It is critical that MSI leadership and expertise is included in the growing green chemistry education community. The inclusion and involvement of institutions that serve students from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities into our Green Chemistry Commitment program is central in ensuring the talent pool of sustainable scientists is diverse and equipped with a diversity of perspectives and approaches that will solve global and local challenges," says Dr. Amy Cannon, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Beyond Benign.

The key objectives of this initiative include: partnering with MSI chemistry and science departments, through funding opportunities, professional development and leadership opportunities, to evolve chemistry teaching and practice at their institutions to include green chemistry and sustainable science; building inclusive, diverse community spaces for MSI and BIPOC faculty to collaborate, learn, and share about green chemistry; and engaging and supporting green chemistry student leaders.

The MSI initiative is a critical component of the Beyond Benign Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC) 25x25 program, which seeks to ensure that 25 percent of graduating chemists in the U.S. have a background in green chemistry by 2025. The Commitment program offers higher education institutions a flexible model to expand green chemistry education through their science departments. Through signing the GCC, higher education institutions become part of a broad network advocating for green chemistry education, and gain access to professional development opportunities, funding opportunities, mentorship, peer-to-peer support, and much more.

Through this initiative, Beyond Benign will conduct outreach and discussions with faculty members across a variety of MSIs to better understand the unique needs and challenges they face in incorporating green chemistry into their classrooms, labs, and departments. By bringing their leadership and expertise to the table, MSI faculty will help shape adaptable models to scale green chemistry educational programming for higher education students across the nation. Beyond Benign intends to support MSI faculty in their green chemistry work with resources, peer networks, and funding and professional development opportunities.

Power of the Ballot Debate Watch Party and Comedy Show Set Off GOTV Mobilization Efforts with Celebrity Talents BPhlat, Erin Jackson and MESHELLE

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Call it the calm before the midterm election storm. Georgia Black Women's Roundtable (GA BWR) treated staff, volunteers, local and national leaders, and members of the community to a night filled with tasty food, great company, and a lot of laughter when they hosted a Power of the Ballot Debate Watch Party and Comedy Show this past Friday, October 14 at IBEW Local 613. The event kicked off a weekend of organizing as election activists hit the streets to educate and motivate citizens to be among the first to cast a ballot for early voting which begins on Monday, October 17.

"We are beginning this very serious mobilization phase with a fun event because our workers and volunteers have been pounding the pavement for months and we know how hard it will get over the next few weeks to motivate and mobilize frustrated voters," expressed Helen Butler, executive director of Georgia Coalition for the People's Agenda (People's Agenda) and convener of GA BWR.

Butler continues, "We are also fighting voter suppression tactics so we are training more poll workers than usual and, if it's anything like 2021, we may have to deal with angry voters retaliating because they believed there was voter fraud. Black voters understand the power of the ballot and will turn out like they did in 2020 so we want to make sure they can vote. We have a lot of work to do so it was great to relax and enjoy the comediennes."

In addition to Butler, members of GA BWR that organized the event included: Felicia Davis, Clayton County Black Women's Roundtable; Deborah Scott, GA STAND-UP; and Sandra L. Williams, Retail, Wholesale Department Store Union. Melanie L. Campbell, president of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation's (NCBCP) and convener of BWR, was on hand to bring greetings from the national office.

As part of the organizing weekend the nonpartisan groups traveled through the Atlanta area on a bus wrapped with get-out-the-vote messages about the power of the ballot and urging people to vote. The bus will continue to visit cities in Georgia to mobilize Black voters and let residents know they can get a free ride to the polls by calling the GA Coalition for the People's Agenda hotline at 877-524-8683.

Additional events over the weekend included a tailgating event on Saturday at the NCBCP Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. Institute during Clark Atlanta University's Homecoming, and on Sunday Georgia STAND-UP hosted a brunch and gospel concert at their headquarters in East Point, GA. The organizing weekend was part of NCBCP's seven-state Unity '22 Black Women's Roundtable Power of the Ballot GOTV Comedy Tour and Organizing Weekend.

Comediennes Meshelle "The Indie Mom" of Comedy, Erin Jackson and BPhlat were just a sampling of the special guests who lined up to get out the vote. The comedy show followed the debate between former football player and businessman, Herschel Walker, and Georgia Senator and Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Senator Raphael Warnock.

National Partners include AARP, SEIU, Neo Philanthropy/State Infrastructure Fund and Kapor Center. Local partners are Black Male Initiative and Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council.

BOSS™ Racks Up $130,000 in a Day and Places Second in Long Beach Gives

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The 4th Annual Long Beach Gives campaign, an online giving day sponsored by the City's leading nonprofit funders and nonprofit support organizations, invites donors from throughout the city and beyond to give to the local nonprofit of their choosing. This year, the effort raised $1,965,539 to support 232 participating nonprofits. BOSS™ (Business Of Student Success) raised $130,000 from more than 300 donors, making it the second most contributed to charity in this year's campaign.

That distinction was earned, in part, through BOSS's partnerships. "We could not have competed without the matching donations by Bella Canvas / Alo Yoga and Greg Perlman of GHC Housing Partners, as well as the ongoing support from the Los Angeles Rams through VP Molly Higgins," Everett Glenn, sports industry pioneer turned BOSS leader, said.

"I am so thrilled to hear that our contribution has made such a big difference! So thrilled," said Lindsey Potter, People Experience Manager/DEI at Alo, Alo Moves, and BELLA+.

BOSS, a Long Beach-based nonprofit, focuses on helping local boys - and particularly boys of color - succeed in school, their community, and eventually, in their careers. The group uses sport and a focus on specific career pathways, including STEAM, to support the 200 boys they serve. Through year-round and multi-year programming, BOSS is successfully addressing the inequities in education laid bare by COVID.

The served boys have five years of across-the-board outperformance on all metrics tracked by the Department of Education, and a 20/20 college acceptance rate among graduating seniors. Those graduates now attend Stanford, UCLA, Tennessee State, Lincoln University, San Diego State, Whittier College, CSULB, and UC Merced.

Of the 232 nonprofit organizations that participated in Long Beach Gives, BOSS ranked second only behind The Assistance League, an institution with 800 members that's been operating in the area for nearly a century.

Additionally, BOSS earned prizes in the following categories:

* Most unique donors to a nonprofit

* Most peer fundraisers for a nonprofit

* Early giving: most unique donors to a peer fundraiser

* Early giving: most unique donors to a nonprofit

* Early giving: most dollars raised by a nonprofit

Beyond the role they played in BOSS's Long Beach Gives success, the BOSS team identified two partners that will support their career pathway programming moving forward.

"Bella Canvas / Alo Yoga is our newest sponsor and we're working with them to develop career exposure and networking opportunities for our boys around the apparel industry," Glenn explains.

He also adds, "The Rams have been supporters from Day 1 and continue to open doors and create unique, real-world experiences and opportunities for advocacy for our boys." Rams VP Molly Higgins said, "The boys are lucky to have you! We are lucky to have you fighting for our kids! Thanks for the important work you are doing."

While the Long Beach Gives campaign has ended, individuals and organizations can still donate to BOSS at https://bossprograms.org/donate/

About BOSS:

BOSS™ (Business Of Student Success) helps BIPOC youth, especially boys of color and economically disadvantaged boys, develop the character, discipline, habits, and skills they need to succeed in school, in the community, and professionally. The organization places an emphasis on STEAM, critical thinking, writing, and related fields. At the same time, the nonprofit leverages the power of sport to inspire boys to pursue greatness beyond sport.

PBS SOCAL and OUR L.A. Present ‘Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and The Politics of Race’

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- "Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" reveals the life and legacy of the first African American mayor elected in a major American city, with an overwhelmingly white majority, and will be broadcast on PBS SoCal on Thursday, October 6 at 8:30 p.m., Our L.A. announced today. The encore presentation of the award-winning documentary is being released during another historic Los Angeles mayoral race occurring now. It is also available on PBS.org, and on PBS and World Channel's Saturday Playlist Initiative on race.

"Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" tells the little-known story of Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley whose 1973 election was a remarkable political first in the history of race and politics in America. The documentary raises important issues about race, identity, and coalitions, and is especially relevant at this time when the nation is still at a tipping point in the struggle against racial injustice and police brutality.

Featuring never-before-seen historical footage and photographs, "Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" examines the creation of Bradley's extraordinary multi-racial coalition of African Americans, Jews, white liberals, Latinos, and Asian Americans, which redefined Los Angeles, transformed the national dialogue on race, and set the foundation for sustainable coalitions that encouraged the elections of minority candidates nationwide, most notably President Barack Obama. At the same time, the film examines the complexities and contradictions of Bradley's career as a bridge builder.

Produced by Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Lyn Goldfarb and multiple Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Alison Sotomayor, "Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" also brings into sharp focus the issues of police brutality in minority communities and the challenges of police reform, and shows how Tom Bradley, a former police officer whose political aspirations were shaped by the Watts Rebellion, could not break the cycles of poverty and despair that would ultimately spark the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest, and mark the end of his era.

Narrated by Emmy® Award-winning actress Alfre Woodard, with an original score composed by Stephen James Taylor, "Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" is a human story about struggle and success, conflict, and community. It is a classic, American story of determination against seemingly insurmountable odds; the story of a black man, the son of sharecroppers and grandson of a slave who fought poverty, prejudice, and bigotry to bridge racial divides. It is the story of the pressures which face our cities, the challenges of diversity, and the complexities of coalitions in a changing America.

"We are honored to return to PBS SoCal, during a mayor's race with many parallels to Tom Bradley's breakthrough campaign," says Lyn Goldfarb, the documentary's director, writer, and producer. "We believe in the power of storytelling and the value of our shared history. Tom Bradley's story is part of a critically important narrative for the City of Los Angeles and the nation in how he transformed American politics by bridging racial and ethnic divides."

"Remarkably, Tom Bradley's story is still not being taught in our schools, and our history books often exclude his significance in the national political landscape," remarks Alison Sotomayor, the documentary's producer, writer, and research director. "'Bridging the Divide' will provide a unique, historical perspective to illuminate our understanding of race and multi-ethnic coalition building in America. The story of Tom Bradley, no doubt, will encourage thoughtful reflection and conversation that will deepen our awareness of our lives and our world."

"Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race" is streaming on Kanopy.com for free with a library card thanks to the support of participating libraries, colleges, and universities.

The documentary is also available on pbs.org. The website, https://www.mayortombradley.com/, provides an extensive look at Tom Bradley's life and legacy.

"Bridging the Divide" Festivals & Awards: Grand Prize, Best Documentary Feature, Golden State Film Festival, 2019; March on Washington Film Festival, 2017; Pan African Film Festival, 2016; Los Angeles Emmy Award Nomination for Best Documentary Feature, 2016; Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival, 2015; World Premiere, Los Angeles Film Festival, 2015.

Eliminating Bias in Employment Hiring

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Black people routinely face discrimination in the hiring process. Sometimes this happens because of a conscious bias. However, unconscious bias frequently occurs due to people's tendency to hire people like themselves, according to job site Trove Talent.

Potential employers often skip over applicants with better skills and more relevant experience for a specific job if their resume reveals one or more of the six common contributors to bias.

A Better Way for Employers to Hire.

Trove Talent brings a new approach to the problem of initial bias in the hiring process with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Trove Talent's proprietary algorithm.

Trove Talent rates and ranks all job candidates according to how well their abilities, skills, and talents match the specific requirements for an employer's open job position. Then, Trove Talent removes the six most common causes of bias in an organization's talent recruitment thinking, resume review procedures, interview consideration process, and hiring practices.

By eliminating the bias (conscious or unconscious), Trove Talent's new website helps firms find the talent they've been missing and leads employers to hire the best candidate for the job regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or age.

Because Trove rates and ranks job seekers on their talents, more people get through the screening process providing for "real" equal opportunity employment.

A Better Way for Job Seekers to Get Hired.

For job seekers, Trove Talent is like having a personal job recruiter working for them 24/7.

Traditional job search sites require a candidate to search through hundreds of job listings and submit their resume through an online portal. Trove Talent constantly scans and categorizes open job positions that best match each person's job abilities, preferences, skills, talents, and compensation requirements.

Should an employer want to interview a top-ranked candidate for a specific job, Trove lets the job seeker know, empowers the job seeker to decide if the job is a good match, and initiate the conversation with the potential employer.

"The current gap for technical talent in the marketplace will grow with 50% of the workforce expected to move into more technical roles," said Kelly Smith, co-founder. "Trove Talent helps firms fill this gap by finding the technical talent that often gets overlooked because of unintended bias. Diversity of thought is critical to the success of any business. Good employers embrace diversity because it leads to new ideas and perspectives. And, despite the strides made at progressive firms to minimize bias in the interview decision process, many hiring and talent acquisition leaders remain frustrated by the fundamental flaws in how talent recruitment works today. This is why we created Trove Talent."

And while Trove's objective isn't as lofty as Google's to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible, it is to help one person at a time to be recognized for their true talents and break through the glass ceiling of discrimination.

About Trove Talent:

Trove Talent helps hiring managers attract a diversity of talent for open job positions and ensure candidates with the skills and talent that best match the specific requirements for available jobs get considered based solely on the talent and potential they offer.

By eliminating bias in recruitment thinking, resume review procedures, and the interview consideration process, Trove Talent's website removes less-qualified candidates from the consideration and helps find better-qualified talent for consideration and selection.

Opening Thurs., Sept. 15: ‘Veils’ The Musical Takes Center Stage Reminding Us of The Price Paid for The Freedoms Won and The Women Behind It All

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) has teamed with Restoration Stage (Washington, D.C.) to bring the popular musical "Veils" to the Los Angeles area for a short run Thursday, September 15, and Friday, September 16 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, September 17 at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 18 at 8 p.m. at the Nate Holden Performing Art Center in Los Angeles, California. Purchase tickets at https://bherc.org/.

So much has been written about the men lost in the Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter movements. Unexplored, however, are the stories of the women whose lives are affected by these tragedies - the women who wear the "Veils." This musical is described as an emotional historical pageant of grief and resilience that pays tribute to women veiled in mourning, with a focus on Black lives lost in bloodshed during the sixties Civil Rights Movement to gain many of the freedoms we enjoy today.

BHERC believes that "Veils" on its own sends a powerful message of courage and sacrifice. However, as we find ourselves at the precipice of a democracy that is being contested, and the right to vote is being undermined as well as other freedoms, BHERC believes that "Veils" is truly a great example of the price that has already been paid for the gains being threatened. It represents the strong Women, like those who today are standing up and marching for justice.

"We are proud to bring this inspirational and compelling work to Los Angeles for a second time," States Sandra J. Evers-Manly. "The pandemic disrupted the performance in March 2020, but not this time. Everyone must come out to witness this incredible musical. It will inform, energize, and inspire you, with hope for our future as a people."

"Veils," the musical, is written by Steven A. Butler, Jr. with music and lyrics by Courtney Baker-Oliver and Christopher John Burnett and is directed by Courtney Baker-Oliver. Joining the West Coast production is soul singer, dramatist, educator, and activist Ayanna Gregory. The daughter of iconic comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory, Ayanna continues her father's work with deep awareness and concern for Human Rights expressed through her gift of music. More than entertainment; they are her mission. "She touches the place that is the deepest and clearest in my heart", Stevie Wonder. Filling out the cast are Bernie Alston, Steven A. Butler, Jr.*, Desire' Dubose*, Kandace Foreman, Bridget Garwood, Andrea Gerald, Robert Hamilton, Brandyn Marshall, Corisa Myers, Suli Myrie, Ayana Ogunsunlade*, Grace Pugh, Nakiea Washington Dade (*member of Actor's Equity Association). Stage Management by Ronald Lee Newman*, Musical Direction by Justin Thompson, Choreography by Kyra DaCosta *, Sound/Video Design by David Lamont Wilson*, Lighting Design by Stage Jerry Dale, Jr. Set and Properties by Courtney Baker-Oliver and Robert Hamilton, Costumes by Courtney Baker-Oliver & Luqman Salim, Technical Direction by Robert Hamilton; Executive Producer, Sandra Evers-Manly and Producers: Courtney Baker-Oliver and Steven A. Butler, Jr.

ACCOLADES INCLUDE:

"The singer-actors have created an exquisitely beautiful experience of enduring sorrow, honor, and healing." - John Stoltenberg

"The surprise is that with Veils two such multitalented African American young men have undertaken this profoundly womanist theme with such deep empathy and authentic respect. This, to my knowledge, is a first in theatre history." - DCMetroTheatreArts.com

"Tackles roles ranging from Sybrina Fulton and Mamie Till to Jacqueline Kennedy and Viola Liuzzo." - The Washington Informer

"I'm thrilled that my mother's story is one being told in this production which brings history to life and light." - Mary Liuzzo, daughter of civil rights martyr Viola Liuzzo

During the Black Hollywood Education Resource Center's Annual film festival, we will bring together a distinguished group of mental health experts, affiliates, peers, providers, government officials, media, and key stakeholders to talk about what it means to recover mentally from the COVID-19 pandemic. We continue to see the increasing number of people experiencing anxiety, depression, psychosis, loneliness, suicide, mass shootings and other mental health concerns these past two years, in addition to the largest number of opioid deaths in our history.

The historical landscape and experience of mental health among the African American Community has and remains to be characterized by current and unresolved trauma and violence. To address the impact of mental and brain health in diverse and marginalized communities across the globe, the Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center will also present its first Health Matters Film Block, featuring films focused on mental health. "This year's films will help us reimage therapeutic treatments and models of mental health care and to determine ways that we can adequately address the complex challenges of mental illness in marginalized communities, which accounts for approximately one-third of mental illness globally", stated Dr. Shirley Evers-Manly, Dean and Professor, Alcorn State University, who will moderate the session.

During the festival and beyond, participants will discuss alternative ways to heal from trauma and explore the intersecting equity issues that exist. These events unequally affect many African Americans, communities of color and marginalized communities the most, placing them more at risk of a mental health crisis.

These circumstances call for radical change in the paradigm and practices of mental health care, including improving standards of clinician training, and revisioning current models of mental health care delivery. Upon completion of this conference, participants will enhance their knowledge of evidence-based practices to improve the behavioral and clinical skills of nurses, social workers, and other health care professionals who care for persons and families of all ages and cultural / socioeconomic status living with mental illness across the globe through the lens of film and the sound of music.
