New Tampa Bay Podiatrist Offers Early Morning and Evening Availability

WESTCHASE, Fla. -- Early birds and night owls rejoice: a new Tampa Bay podiatrist is setting the bar on convenience with extended clinic hours. Sagar Shah, DPM, recently helped launch the opening of a new location for Modern Foot & Ankle at 10954 Sheldon Rd. in Westchase. This marked the Central Florida group's seventh clinic opening in five years.

"Modern Foot & Ankle has an excellent reputation for providing premier care to their patients while utilizing advances in medicine and research," said Dr. Shah. "I knew I wanted to be with a group that uses a patient-centric approach."

Part of that approach incorporates increased availability. The Westchase clinic features appointment times as early as 7:30 a.m. and as late as 7 p.m. on certain days.

"Having additional hours helps patients and families receive care without needing to take time off of work or have kids leave school early," explained Dr. Shah.

Both an accomplished board-certified surgeon and a proponent of holistic medicine, Dr. Shah bases his care on continuing education and patient comfort. He says that an essential component of his treatment plan is talking with patients and listening to their needs.

"This allows me to develop a conservative or surgical plan that is best-suited for the patient," he added.

Dr. Shah's experience also includes outreach programs. He has provided his surgical skills to The Yucatán Crippled Children's Project in Mexico, through which he corrected podiatric deformities for children in need.

"Seeing the hope in patients' faces and knowing that I can make a difference in their health-it's a challenge that I welcome and a gratifying experience," he said.

Now, Dr. Shah says his research-based, patient-first approach is a good fit for the Westchase community.

"This area in particular creates an exciting opportunity as a practitioner," he said. "Seeing the abundance of activities available makes me want to provide the best care possible to keep patients moving and active."

After several years in private practice in Virginia, Dr. Shah reflected, relocating to Florida was bittersweet. But, he added, the move to Westchase was a long-awaited homecoming.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Virginia and the patient relationships I was able to build," he said. "But I was raised in the Tampa Bay area, and moving closer to my family and friends was appealing to me."

Church of Scientology Tampa Brings the Best of Today and the Past Together Under One Roof

TAMPA, Fla. -- Dedicated March 13, 2011, in honor of the birthday of Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, the home of the Church of Scientology Tampa is a complex known as Ybor Square. More than a treasured cultural landmark, the building evokes an entire way of life.

As in many communities, the Church of Scientology of Tampa is housed in one of the city's most iconic buildings. Ybor Square is a National Historic Landmark, built in Ybor City, now a neighborhood in Tampa, in the late 1880s by city father Vincente Ybor. It was once the largest cigar factory in the world.

An episode of Destination Scientology on the Scientology Network shows how the Church carried out meticulous research and restored all historical elements of its new home. The Church holds the building in trust for the entire community, contributing to the pride and sense of continuity of Cuban-Americans.

This episode of Destination Scientology takes viewers inside the Church-a popular location on historical tours of the city.

And it shows how Tampa Scientologists:

* Work with community partners to eradicate drug abuse

* Raise awareness of human trafficking to protect victims in a region notorious for abuse

* And respond to natural and manmade disasters, making it clear how they earned and continue to merit the title of "Hurricane Heroes."

Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige dedicated the 88,000-square-foot Church, located just a half-hour from Clearwater. As such, it serves as a model for thousands of Scientologists arriving at the religion's international spiritual headquarters each week from across the globe. Here they can see just how much a local Church of Scientology can accomplish.

Destination: Scientology is an original series on the Scientology Network. Each episode brings the viewer inside a Church of Scientology, showcasing the diversity of our Churches and the cooperation that weaves every Church of Scientology into the local community fabric.

Since launching, the Scientology Network has been viewed in 240 countries and territories worldwide in 17 languages. Broadcast from Scientology Media Productions, the Church's global media center in Los Angeles, the Scientology Network is available on DIRECTV Channel 320 and can be streamed on Scientology.tv, on mobile apps, and via the Roku, Amazon Fire and Apple TV platforms.

How One Man is Helping Youth Avoid the Tragedy of Human Trafficking

TAMPA, Fla. -- January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month and the Scientology Network invites viewers to watch an episode of "Voices for Humanity" featuring a Tampa Bay Area entrepreneur who is dedicated to saving kids from modern-day slavery.

The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that 200,000 American children are at risk of being trafficked into the sex industry each year,

Christopher King, fashion designer, U.S Marine veteran and grandson of blues legend BB King, founded the nonprofit The Gentlemen's Course to save kids from human trafficking and any form of human rights abuse and to provide them with the moral compass and social skills they need to thrive.

Florida is the third-busiest hub for child sex trafficking in the United States.

"We're talking about kids being sold, traded, forced against their own will," says King in his episode of "Voices for Humanity." "No one should be a slave, and no one has the right to enslave anyone."

King learned of Youth for Human Rights International on a visit to the United for Human Rights headquarters in Clearwater, Florida. "That gave me a guide on how to educate youth. At that point, I founded The Gentlemen's Course."

King and his team bring his programs right to the kids.

"Human traffickers, they're in the schools. They're on social media. They're getting the kids on their platforms," says King. "So we might as well attack them on the same ground. If people knew their rights, they would know what to defend. That is the purpose. That's our goal."

Youth for Human Rights International materials help people of all ages understand the 30 rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Creating a world where human rights are known and protected starts with effective educational programs that reach across all cultural and geographic boundaries.

Inspired by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard's words that "Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream," the Church of Scientology and Scientologists support Youth for Human Rights and make its educational materials available free of charge. Watch a documentary on the history and activities of Youth for Human Rights International on "Voices for Humanity" on the Scientology Network.

Since launching with a special episode featuring Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige, Scientology Network has been viewed in 240 countries and territories worldwide in 17 languages. Broadcast from Scientology Media Productions, the Church's global media center in Los Angeles, the Scientology Network is available on DIRECTV Channel 320 and can be streamed on Scientology.tv, mobile apps and via the Roku, Amazon Fire and Apple TV platforms.

The award was accepted by Wes LaPorte, CEO of PhoneSoap. "PhoneSoap's mission has always been to limit the spread of infectious diseases through science and technology. We are honored to accept the Innovations in Infection Prevention award of 2021 from the C Diff Foundation given their very important endeavor to bring awareness, education, and advocacy globally," stated LaPorte.

According to the 2017 Update (published February 2018) of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for C. difficile Infection by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and Society or Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), CDI remains a significant medical problem in hospitals, in long-term care facilities and in the community. C. difficile is one of the most common causes of health care- associated infections in U.S. hospitals (Lessa, et al, 2015, New England Journal of Medicine). Recent estimates suggest C. difficile approaches 500,000 infections annually in the U.S. and is associated with approximately 20,000 deaths annually. (Guh, 2020, New England Journal of Medicine).

Based on internal estimates, the recurrence rate of two of the three antibiotics currently used to treat CDI is between 20% and 40% among approximately 150,000 patients treated. We believe the annual incidence of CDI in the U.S. approaches 600,000 infections and has a mortality rate of approximately 9.3%.

The C Diff Foundation expresses their gratitude to all the Sponsors and Keynote speakers for their generous support of the 9th Annual International C. diff. Conference and Health EXPO. We would also like to thank Seres Therapeutics, Rebiotix, a Ferring Company, and Ferring Pharmaceuticals for their efforts and support with this endeavor," stated Nancy C. Amazon Prime Removes Indie Film About Global Persecution of Christians

TAMPA, Fla. -- For nearly two years, the indie documentary, "Christians in the Mirror," produced by Joshuacord, Inc. and In Altum Productions, streamed on Amazon Prime before it was removed without warning or explanation. Its producers want to know why.

"Christians in the Mirror" examines the plight of persecuted Christians throughout the world and includes interviews with religious leaders and persecuted Christian families in Syria, India, Iraq, South Sudan, and Egypt. The goal of the film is to educate Americans about the widespread persecution of Christians in other parts of the globe and to motivate Christians blessed with religious freedom in the West to provide aid to those suffering for their faith.

On March 9, 2021, the producers of the documentary independently discovered that the film was no longer available on Amazon's streaming service. Only after reaching out to Amazon for clarifying information did the producers learn that Amazon had unilaterally removed the documentary, but Amazon gave no reason for the removal. The producers followed-up for an explanation, requesting analytics and specific details to outline the reasons for the film's removal, but the information Amazon provided was vague and lacked validity.

Amazon's unexplainable decision invoked feelings of confusion and frustration for Patrick Carberry, the film's co-executive producer and Joshuacord founder. And, apparently, he's not alone.

According to a new Consumer Reports' survey, roughly three out of four Americans worry about the power wielded by today's biggest tech platforms. Top concerns include biased search results, unfair pricing and misinformation.

"My primary concern has to do with potential bias," Carberry says. "I just don't understand why the film was fine for nearly two years, and then it wasn't. What changed? Why? I have many unanswered questions. Something just doesn't feel right."

Carberry adds that the main mission of the film is to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves and to question why there's silence and a lack of support from many affluent churches around America. It's the hope of the film's executive team to activate Christians across America to stand united to help those persecuted for their faith and to prompt people to take action to support religious freedom.

The film averaged about 15,000 to 20,000 streams per quarter and Carberry said that sounded pretty good to him. He adds that it's not his desire to shine any bad will on the tech giant. He simply wants to have the film re-listed so it can continue to inform and educate those who are willing to listen and wanting to help.

"Amazon is a mega power when it comes to helping the little guy get the word out and I feel as if we've been slapped in the face for no reason. There was no real discussion about why or what could be changed," Carberry says. "They are Goliath and we are not even David. Behemoth big tech businesses such as Amazon Prime Video should be making it easier for independent producers to get the message out, not more difficult. We're imploring them to reconsider making our video available again and welcome a discussion. That is all we are really asking for."

While More and More Tampa Bay-Based Organizations Focus On Mental Health and Wellness, GTE Financial Has Been On Board For Years

TAMPA, Fla. -- GTE Financial recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month by celebrating the importance of access to mental health services. Mental Health has been an important topic for GTE Financial for several years and during the pandemic, this important initiative proved to be an essential benefit.

GTE Financial made the decision to invest in their team members by investing in programs that focus on mental health and wellness. Understanding the importance of maintaining an equal work-life balance was a driving factor in creating programs to ensure GTE team members were supported through difficult times. They have unlimited access to services to aid in their mental health struggles.

Through additional initiatives like, "GTE LiveWell," a five-pillar approach to health, GTE has committed to fostering a culture that celebrates differences and understands the real struggles people face in both their personal and professional lives. These benefits have not gone unnoticed. Shakira B, a team member at GTE Financial says, "Having this benefit gives me the peace of mind that no matter what happens in our personal and work lives, we have someone to go to and can trust that it is also confidential."

Rene' McKenna SHRM-CP, AVP of Talent Management said, "We don't just check off a box. We have a commitment to educate, support, and empower team members to make healthy lifestyle choices. Mental Health falls under 'Mind,' one of our five pillars within our GTE LiveWell initiative. It is imperative that we as an organization support our team members with every aspect of health and wellness and mental health is just as important as financial health."

GTE LiveWell focuses on five pillars of success - financial, mind, active, nutrition, and know-how. Know-how, one of the most important pillars, focuses on educating GTE team members so they know and understand all the great resources available to them and their families through their employment with GTE Financial. One such program that GTE offers is a wellness reimbursement plan that offers $30 a month to employees which can be put towards an activity of their choosing - these activities can include a gym membership, art therapy, massage, cooperative gardening, and much more.

GTE Financial has found that companies who raise awareness and actively implement programs centered around mental health are more likely to reduce absenteeism and increase productivity. While many organizations have fallen a bit behind in providing mental health services to their employees, GTE Financial has always kept this service as a top priority. After all, when you take care of your team members, they take care of you. As such, GTE continues to keep an open line of communication and actively works to end the stigma surrounding mental health by keeping their employees' success and growth top of mind.

One of GTE Financial's employees Dolores R states, "This is great! I love the research and resources that are offered to help us live better, healthier, and more productive lives! I always find the advice for living healthier so interesting and enjoy learning things I didn't know that can make us more aware and better stewards of our health and wellness."

GTE Financial shines as an example for other organizations within Tampa Bay and beyond, to invest in mental health initiatives for the sole benefit of providing essential healthcare to their team members. GTE is an employer that champions for access to health and wellness with the inclusion of mental health. Providing these programs for their employees is another example of GTE living their mission to be the preferred financial services provider and employer in the marketplace.

GTE Financial is a not-for-profit financial cooperative. This means they make decisions for the benefit of all customers, whom they call member-owners, because each one has a stake, or ownership, in their cooperative. The money GTE earns is returned to their "shareholders," GTE member-owners, in the form of higher dividends, lower rates, and new products and services.

TAMPA, Fla. -- C Diff Foundation, the leading Global Patient and Healthcare Organization Educating and Advocating for C. difficile (Clostridioides difficile, C. diff., CDAD, CDI) today announced that the organization has developed a free mobile application designed specifically for patients and families who have been impacted by a Clostridioides difficile infection.

The free app, "C diff and You," is available on the Apple Store and Google Play, and was designed by the C Diff Foundation as an interactive educational tool allowing users to access easy-to-understand information about C. diff. infection prevention, treatments, clinical trials, support, nutrition, diagnostics, and environmental safety.

Clostridioides difficile infection, also called C. diff., CDI, C. difficile, or CDAD, is a life-threatening infection.

"I am really pleased to see this further addition to the C Diff Foundation's catalogue of achievements. This is an ideal way to communicate information far and wide," stated Professor Mark Wilcox, MD, FRCPath.

"There are patients, families, and caregivers isolated, and experiencing social-economic changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. In the Global efforts to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus the ramifications being witnessed range from loss of wages to difficulties meeting housing, utilities, nutrition, and healthcare expenses down to basic cable and internet connections. The one common denominator remaining accessible is the Mobile (also called Cell) phone. Developing the mobile application, 'C diff and You,' places the C. diff. community in the palm of their hands continuing to support the patients, families, and caregivers who desperately need to know that they are not alone no matter where they are," says Nancy C. Caralla, Founding President, and Executive Director of the C Diff Foundation.

Through the deployment of this app, the C Diff Foundation continues with its commitment to evolve resources to unite patients, families, and healthcare providers in the fight against C. diff. infections. The app focuses on quality resources directly relevant to patients and their care providers, aiming to lower the anxiety and fear associated with a CDI and provide easy access to reliable information to all users. "C diff and You" will also provide users with direct access to patient-centered care information, educational episodes of the "C. diff. Spores and More" archived radio episodes, and the C. diff. Global Tele-Support Network with a one tap key to "Sign Up Today" for Caregiver, Nutrition, and Physician support sessions. The telephone access key connects the app user directly to the C Diff Foundation office and the Foundation's Triage Nurses.

"Patients with a C. difficile infection are in desperate need for education on the risk factors for the infection, how to stop infection spread, the chances of recurrence, and treatment options for recurrent C. difficile. The 'C diff and You' app is an outstanding and user-friendly platform for patients to get accurate information on C. difficile infection and has resources that patients can use," says Sahil Khanna, M.B.B.S., M.S.
