Continuous Training Makes Union Ironworkers the Trusted Source for Quality Architectural and Ornamental Work

Author: Iron Workers Union
Dateline: Austin, Texas (AUSTIN, Texas)  | Mon, 24 Oct 2011

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “The Iron Workers International Union, teaming with the Ironworker Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust (IMPACT), released a series of new architectural and ornamental training modules designed to replicate real-world assembly and installation challenges ironworkers face on jobsites.”

A R T I C L E:

The Iron Workers International Union (www.ironworkers.org), teaming with the Ironworker Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust (IMPACT), released a series of new architectural and ornamental training modules designed to replicate real-world assembly and installation challenges ironworkers face on jobsites. Currently, IMPACT Region VI has four new architectural and ornamental mockups in use at training locations in Houston, Arlington, San Antonio and Oklahoma City, one of which will be moved to the New Orleans training facility at the end of October.

Each 9 foot x 9 foot module arrived in a wooden crate and contains five window frames, one door frame, a parts list and a blueprint. During the training sessions, students unpack the pieces and use the blueprint to erect the windows and doorframe inside a steel structure.

"Our new mockup materials provide resources to make sure our ironworkers are the safest and most effective ironworkers out there," said Eric Dean, General Secretary of the International Ironworkers Union. "These hands-on models help illustrate challenges and nuances of architectural and ornamental ironworking that are often difficult to convey on paper."

The new architectural and ornamental modules will be in use periodically during training sessions that began in September and will run through May 2012. Every year, over 200 hours of training is conducted in each apprenticeship program. Each training program also includes journeymen upgrading classes.

Training on the new modules prepares Union ironworkers for real jobsites, according to Greg Schulze, Apprenticeship and Training Coordinator for the Iron Workers Union in Texas.

"The classrooms are a non-stressful environment where the students can learn the correct way to do the work and build confidence in their abilities," Schulze said. "Having the ironworkers properly trained makes them more efficient and cost effective for the contractor. I hear from the contractors that the training is working because of all the qualified help they're getting in the field."

Permasteelisa North America (www.permasteelisagroup.com) is a leading, worldwide contractor that partnered solely with Union ironworkers on one of their largest jobs to-date, the Devon Energy Corporation building. The Devon Tower, currently under construction, will impressively be the tallest building in the state of Oklahoma.

"Anyone familiar with this business knows that the avenue to success is to employ Union ironworkers," says James Jutson, Field Operations Manager for Permasteelisa North America. "They are qualified to start work the moment they enter the site. They provide a trained workforce schooled in the techniques of rigging, welding and safety." Regarding the ornamental and architectural aspects of iron working, Jutson went on to say, "It is extremely important that they understand that every piece of material is a finished product and cannot be treated like a piece of raw steel."

General Secretary Dean says he's pleased that they are already getting such a positive response to their "game-changing style of Ironworker education and training." Especially in Texas and the Mid-South States, journeymen at local unions are well on their way to experimenting with new techniques from the ironworkers training & education programs.

The Iron Workers Union listens carefully to its contractors and adapts its training programs to meet real-world needs on jobsites. "Several times a year we meet with the contractors to get feedback about our ironworkers in the field," said Randy Palumbo, Apprenticeship and Training Coordinator for Iron Workers Local 48 in Oklahoma City, (www.ironworkers48.org). "They tell us what they would like taught more in our classes, or taught less, and we build our programs accordingly."

Palumbo believes investments in training programs made by the Iron Workers Union, Signatory Contractors and IMPACT result in reduced costs & high-quality construction for contractors who employ Union ironworkers.

The Iron Workers Union holds a week-long Instructor Training Program every summer to update their instructors with the latest training and installation techniques. Ornamental and architectural classes have been part of this annual program since its inception 27 years ago. The annual instructor training is held in Ann Arbor, Michigan in mid-July.

Ornamental work entails installation of curtain wall and window wall systems that sheath buildings, exteriors of high-rise structures, interior finished elements, and exterior and interior surface systems.

Architectural and structural training programs help ironworkers learn to erect the complex steel structures that shape large-scale industrial, commercial and residential buildings and structures, and install pre-cast columns and panels.

About the Iron Workers Union:

The Iron Workers District Council of Texas and Mid-South States represents some 5,000 skilled union ironworkers who make up the area covered by IMPACT Region VI. These men and women help form the backbone of what the Iron Workers Union, its Signatory Contractor Associations, and IMPACT are doing to reinforce the construction industry's future. About IMPACT:

IMPACT (www.impact-net.org) serves to unite union ironworkers and signatory contractors in partnerships to develop jobs in the United States and Canada. IMPACT programs help foster workplace excellence through customized project tracking, management training, and safety insurance. IMPACT is a joint labor-management, non-profit trust formed under Section 302(c) (9) of Labor-Management Relations (Taft-Hartley) Act.

ShopRite and Hill PHOENIX Collaborate on GreenChill Gold Award-Winning Store in Hatfield, Pennsylvania

Author: Hill PHOENIX
Dateline: Hatfield, Pennsylvania (HATFIELD, Pa.)  | Mon, 24 Oct 2011

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Hill PHOENIX Inc., a designer and manufacturer of commercial refrigeration equipment, and Keasbey, N.J.-based Wakefern Food Corp are pleased to announce the grand opening of the new GreenChill Gold Award-winning ShopRite store in the Hatfield Pointe Shopping Center in Hatfield, Pa.”

A R T I C L E:

Hill PHOENIX Inc., a designer and manufacturer of commercial refrigeration equipment, and Keasbey, N.J.-based Wakefern Food Corp are pleased to announce the grand opening of the new GreenChill Gold Award-winning ShopRite store in the Hatfield Pointe Shopping Center in Hatfield, Pa.

GreenChill is an E.P.A. Partnership with food retailers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change. GreenChill works to help food retailers:

* Transition to environmentally friendlier refrigerants;
* Lower refrigerant charge sizes and eliminate leaks; and
* Adopt green refrigeration technologies, strategies, and practices.

Hatfield's new ShopRite is the result of a team effort to combine green refrigeration technologies with merchandising that supports the store's commitment to organic, local and specialty foods. Representatives from Pennsylvania-based AMF Sales and Associates, Inc. and Hill PHOENIX worked with ShopRite to design a mechanical and merchandising plan that would not only fulfill the company's branding mission, but also would meet E.P.A. GreenChill Gold standards for sustainable refrigeration.

"It is important for us and for the community that ShopRite is environmentally responsible with our refrigeration technology," said Jim Madanci, ShopRite's director of operations. "Our investment in sustainability sends an strong message to our customers, our vendors and our community."

GreenChill Gold Award certification requires that a store use only non-ozone-depleting refrigerants. It must also achieve an average HFC refrigerant charge of no more than 1.25 pounds of refrigerant per 1,000 BTU per hour total evaporator cooling load and a store wide annual refrigerant emissions rate of no more than 15 percent.

"The ShopRite in Hatfield, PA can be very proud of this achievement," said Keilly Witman, manager of EPA's GreenChill Partnership. "Our gold certification standards are so tough that only 30 stores out of about 36,000 in the nation currently hold GreenChill's Gold-Level Store Certification."

ShopRite installed a Hill PHOENIX Second Nature(R) MTLTX2 system that combines a medium temperature secondary coolant system using glycol and a low temperature direct expansion cascade system using CO2 as a refrigerant.

ShopRite is a retailer-owned cooperative that is part of Keasbey, N.J.-based Wakefern Food Corp. The Hatfield store will be operated by KTM Supermarkets Inc., which also owns and operates ShopRite in West Chester, Pa.

About Hill PHOENIX:

Hill PHOENIX Inc., a Dover Company, is based in Conyers, Ga. The company designs and manufactures commercial refrigerated display cases and specialty products, refrigeration systems, integrated power distribution systems and walk-in coolers and freezers. Reaction Biology Launches Recombinant Methyltransferase Line

Author: Reaction Biology Corporation
Dateline: Malvern, Pennsylvania (MALVERN, Pa.)  | Mon, 24 Oct 2011

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Reaction Biology Corporation ('RBC'), a leading contract research organization providing drug discovery services in epigenetics, today announced the rollout of a new product line, recombinant proteins for epigenetic research. RBC's initial offerings will emphasize the histone methyltransferases (HMTs), including exclusive targets for which there has been no previous commercial source.”

A R T I C L E:

Reaction Biology Corporation ("RBC"), a leading contract research organization providing drug discovery services in epigenetics, today announced the rollout of a new product line, recombinant proteins for epigenetic research. RBC's initial offerings will emphasize the histone methyltransferases (HMTs), including exclusive targets for which there has been no previous commercial source.

The enzymes offered for sale are active and validated for use in high-throughput screening assays. In the case of the HMTs those assays employ RBC's proprietary HotSpot(SM) methodology, which couples economical screening with the data quality of a "gold standard" radiometric approach. HMTs are also routinely assayed by conventional scintillation counting in a plate format (TopCount).

"Our assay expertise is helping us make better enzymes, while the ability to produce new proteins in-house will help us expand the range of assays we can offer, and provide our clients with a more complete drug discovery process," said Konrad Howitz, RBC's Director of Epigenetics.

In addition to the HDAC, Sirtuin, HMT, DNMT and HAT assays currently offered, RBC has innovative assays for demethylases and epigenetic readers in active development.

Based in Malvern, PA, RBC has become a premier provider of drug screening and profiling services. With more than 400 kinases, RBC's coverage of the kinome is the broadest in the industry. Using its proprietary HotSpot technology and other innovations, RBC is expanding its already substantial coverage of epigenetic regulatory enzymes. RBC has provided its services to over 200 customers worldwide, including large pharmaceutical, biotech, government, and academic labs.

Controversial Film ‘Ghetto Physics’ is Poised to OCCUPY the Movement with DVD and Book Release Offering Commentary from Cornel West, Ice T, and Norman Lear

Author: Intention Media
Dateline: Los Angeles, California (LOS ANGELES, Calif.)  | Fri, 21 Oct 2011

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “When filmmakers E. Raymond Brown and Williams Arntz first released the independent movie 'Ghetto Physics' in late 2010, they knew the film was an early battle cry, a wake up call to America and beyond. A R T I C L E:

When filmmakers E. Raymond Brown and Williams Arntz first released the independent movie "Ghetto Physics" in late 2010, they knew the film was an early battle cry, a wake up call to America and beyond. Distributed by Intention Media, owned by "What the BLEEP, Do We Know?" filmmaker Betsy Chasse, the cutting edge hybrid documentary explored the dynamics of the 'powers that be' in laymen terms that the 'man on the street' could easily relate to.

Inflation, foreclosure, unemployment, healthcare issues, pollution, crime, recession and depression: one percent was benefiting - pimping; and somebody, the other 99 percent, were being played.

Today, the DVD release of "Ghetto Physics," accompanied by the manual, "GhettoPhysics: Redefining the Game" finds itself in the middle of an OCCUPY movement which could have been a scene in the original film!

The film features personalities that include Princeton professor Cornel West; rapper/actor Ice T; economist, author John Perkins; Emmy Award-winning television producer and social activist Norman Lear; former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney; and best-selling author Byron Katie. A colorful contingent of 'real life' pimps also flavor the cast including street legends Fillmore Slim, Hook da Crook, Mac Breed and Lo Da Show.

"Ghetto Physics" a term which merges street science with the dynamics of metaphysics, deconstructs the nature, structure and "politricks" of power as they are played out in every corner of our society, and in every society around the world. According to Arntz, the brain behind box office success "What the BLEEP Do We Know," "We see these power dynamics expressed in government, in business, in the military ... in our families ... everywhere. It's a nonpartisan political film that exposes the root of all of the world's dysfunctions - an imbalance in the dynamics of power."

Expresses Brown, a genuine product of the hip hop generation, who incorporates elements of shamanism, quantum theory, and archetypal psychology into his approach, "The evolving Occupy Movement is an eloquent expression of what I have been identifying for years now. The people running the show (a.k.a. the Pimps) and the people putting up with it (a.k.a. the Ho's) have been doing a lousy job taking care of the planet, the environment and each other. It's time to say 'Game Over' and time to start a new one. It is not about right and wrong, good guys vs. bad guys. It is about awareness of 'the game' and letting people know it's up to them to choose the role they play in every situation. 'Ghetto Physics' exposes the powers that be and refuses to let those in control rule our lives anymore."

"Ghetto Physics" is available for purchase now on DVD at Amazon.com and wherever movies are sold online. The book "GhettoPhysics: Redefining the Game," also available via Kindle on Amazon.com, is a resource rife with insight, methodology and a call to action for survival and success as a 99 percenter in society.

Participants at the various OCCUPY centers around the country are also eligible for a free DVD per a special campaign at www.GhettoPhysics.com . The film is available for online screening at GhettoPhysics.com and via download on iTunes and Amazon.com at a later date. View the trailer at

Nonprofit Biodiesel Distributor Delivers 10 Millionth Gallon of Biodiesel Blend

Author: The Energy Cooperative
Dateline: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PHILADELPHIA, Pa.)  | Fri, 21 Oct 2011

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “The Energy Cooperative, a member-owned nonprofit, announced today the delivery of their 10 millionth gallon of biodiesel blended fuel. The delivery went to Krapf Bus Companies, a local private bus contractor for school districts. These 10 million gallons of biodiesel blends have resulted in the use of nearly 1.5 million gallons of domestically-produced fuel.”

A R T I C L E:

The Energy Cooperative, a member-owned nonprofit, announced today the delivery of their 10 millionth gallon of biodiesel blended fuel. The delivery went to Krapf Bus Companies, a local private bus contractor for school districts. These 10 million gallons of biodiesel blends have resulted in the use of nearly 1.5 million gallons of domestically-produced fuel and significant emission reductions for many regulated pollutants. Among them, nearly 11,300 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have been reduced. This is the equivalent of planting more than 260,000 trees or taking 2000 cars off the road for an entire year.

Krapf Bus Company, the country's 8th largest private bus contractor, provides transportation needs to school districts, municipalities, and private entities. Since 2008, The Energy Co-op has provided Krapf with biodiesel blends, a blend of pure biodiesel and ultra-low sulfur diesel, which is used in school buses for the school districts of West Chester Area, Downingtown Area, Coatesville Area, Twin Valley and the Chester County Intermediate Unit. Krapf was the winner of the inaugural "Go Yellow, Go Green Award" given to a leader in the school bus industry who has demonstrated superior commitment in pursuing positive responses to growing environmental concerns.

"All of our partners should be commended for the leadership they are showing by using local biodiesel to displace petroleum," said Jossi Fritz-Mauer, Co-Director for The Energy Co-op. "It's incredibly gratifying as a nonprofit to reach this milestone and displace so much petroleum with cleaner burning biodiesel, which we source from Pennsylvania and local waste products."

The Energy Co-op Biodiesel Distribution Program delivered its first gallon of biodiesel blends to Great Valley School District in 2006. With the help of Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection's Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant (AFIG) program, which covers the added cost of using biodiesel blends, Great Valley became the first school district in the Commonwealth to use biodiesel. Since then, The Energy Co-op has grown to assist over a dozen other area school districts in Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties in their transition to biodiesel. In total, over 90,000 students ride nearly 1,300 vehicles powered by biodiesel blended fuel.

"We partnered with The Energy Cooperative who helped us through the grant process and supplied us with our fuel," said Michael Detwiler, Supervisor of Transportation for the Great Valley School District. "This was a seamless changeover and we experienced no problems operating over 60 school buses on biodiesel. We need to leave a cleaner environment for the next generations and this is just one of the many ways we can do this."

To meet this goal, The Energy Co-op purchases its biodiesel from an in-state producer who uses locally collected waste-greases in its feedstock. By prioritizing a local, sustainable product, The Energy Co-op helps spur the local economy and create green jobs.

Besides the environmental and economic benefits of using biodiesel, school districts are able to improve the quality of air exposed to school children. Carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, particulates, and a myriad of other harmful chemicals, including known carcinogens, are all lowered when using biodiesel blends to displace conventional diesel fuel.

The Energy Cooperative, a member-owned nonprofit, was founded by the Mt. Airy food co-op Weaver's Way in 1979 as a heating oil co-op. Since then, The Energy Co-op has grown to offer residential and commercial members access to renewable electricity, as well as biodiesel to commercial fleets. The mission of The Energy Co-op is to provide members access to renewable energy at a cost savings. The Energy Co-op is a full-service, licensed Class I Distributor in Pennsylvania supplying biodiesel at any blend level.

Idaho Dairy Producers Double Scholarship Plans to Help 15 Students Pursue Their Dreams

Author: Idaho Dairymen's Association
Dateline: Twin Falls, Idaho (TWIN FALLS, Idaho)  | Fri, 21 Oct 2011

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “When the dairy producer leaders of the United Dairymen of Idaho (UDI) and its two branches - the Idaho Dairy Products Commission and the Idaho Dairymen's Association - agreed to establish a scholarship program this year, they intended to award $1,500 scholarships to seven deserving students of Idaho dairy farm families.”

A R T I C L E:

When the dairy producer leaders of the United Dairymen of Idaho (UDI) and its two branches - the Idaho Dairy Products Commission and the Idaho Dairymen's Association - agreed to establish a scholarship program this year, they intended to award $1,500 scholarships to seven deserving students of Idaho dairy farm families.

An overwhelming response, however, changed all that and immediately raised the bar.

"There were so many qualified applicants from local dairy farm families that the Scholarship Selection Committee just couldn't turn them away," says Mike Roth, president of the Idaho Dairymen's Association and dairy producer from Jerome, Idaho. "With the rising cost of college and the past few years of economic tough conditions on dairy farms, even a smaller scholarship like this helps to underwrite the cost of books and classes. Any kind of funding has become extremely important to our kids and families."

The joint Scholarship Selection Committee, chaired by Grace, Idaho dairy producer Sherman Toone - UDI board member - included fellow dairy producers and United Dairymen of Idaho board members Lou Murgoitio and Willie Bokma; Dr. Mireille Chahine from the University of Idaho Extension; and Bob Ohlensehlen, a dairy consultant. To qualify, students had to be children of Idaho dairy farm families.

Toone says it wasn't long in the review process before the team had unanimously decided to recommend expanding the number of scholarships to be awarded to 2011 graduates.

"As representatives on the Board of Directors for the United Dairymen of Idaho, we recognize what a precious resource our children are and how our future lies in their hands," says Toone. "We also recognize that for our children to follow their dreams it takes money, dedication, desire, and determination. As an organization, we are pleased to help a few of our deserving students of Idaho dairy farm families with 15 scholarships at $1,500 each."

Deana Sessions, administrator for the Idaho Dairy Products Commission, which oversees dairy product and nutrition promotion and education programs across Idaho, is proud of the effort. She adds that the idea of investing in future and family is deeply embedded in the culture of Idaho agriculture.

"It is a privilege, on behalf of Idaho's dairy farm families, to be able to provide scholarships for students seeking to further their education," says Sessions. The Idaho Dairymen's Association (IDA), based in Twin Falls, ID, was established to continue to develop and sustain an economically viable Idaho dairy industry that works together to achieve success in the domestic and global marketplace in meeting the needs of the Idaho dairy farm families. A R T I C L E:

Dawn Westerberg, president of Dawn Westerberg Consulting LLC and an authorized Duct Tape Marketing Consultant, will be presenting a session on Blogging, Twitter and Google+ at the Duct Tape Marketing Gathering 2011 conference in Kansas City, Mo., October 27 - 29, 2011.

The session will focus on how blogging, Twitter and Google+ can be used to grow online visibility for businesses as a means to generating more qualified opportunities for winning new customers.

"One of the most valuable assets a business can invest in is valuable, strong, targeted content on their blog to guide the website visitor through the qualification process," said Westerberg. "Duct Tape Marketing refers to this as the Marketing Hour Glass. The prospect experience involves specific stages: Know, Like, Trust, Try, Buy, Refer, Repeat. Online content should facilitate a prospect's movement through those marketing stages."

Once a collection of strong content is published on the website or blog, Westerberg advocates the use of social media platforms such as Twitter and Google+ to circulate the information. "Social media platforms have gathered target audiences. It's up to business owners to develop online networks and share the benefit of the solutions they've developed and deployed for other businesses."

"The more complicated the solution, the more benefit there is to regular blogging," explained Westerberg. "Business owners can highlight products, services and methodologies through blog posts. This will serve to give website visitors a productive and satisfying web experience."

Gathering 2011 is the annual Duct Tape Marketing conference for authorized Duct Tape Marketing consultants.
