Dogs Trapped in Hot Cars – The Sacramento SPCA is Helping Keep Pets Safe

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- As the Sacramento region heads into an extremely hot week, one local animal welfare organization is taking action to help animals left in hot cars. The Sacramento SPCA is providing thermometers to all animal control officers in Sacramento County in an effort to prevent animals from suffering and dying in hot cars and to hold those who caused this suffering accountable.

Each year police and animals control officers in our community respond to hundreds of calls about animals - most often dogs - left in hot cars. These are reported by Good Samaritans who hear the animals crying for help or, in the worst cases, notice an animal that has passed out or stopped breathing. California law now allows these Good Samaritans to break into the vehicle under certain circumstances.

"We need the community to know that there are consequences to leaving an animal in a car - no matter the reason," said Kenn Altine, CEO of the Sacramento SPCA. "The consequences for the animal are horrific," he said, "but too often the person is not held accountable."

Altine said the thermometers, which are certified tested and calibrated, will allow the animal control officers to accurately capture the ambient air temperature in the vehicle as part of their evidence collection.

"By having a reliable and accurate recording of the temperature using a certified thermometer, we can better hold the people accountable for their actions," said Sacramento County DDA Hilary Bagley-Franzoia. The Sacramento County District Attorney handles cases of animals left in cars.

They've already had several cases this year, including an animal who was left in a car where the temperature reached 130 degrees, causing the animal to have seizures, neuropathy and to bleed through its skin and paws. Forty-five minutes after the animal was freed from the car, its internal temperature was still 108 degrees (normal body temperature for dogs and cats is 101 to 102.5 degrees).

First Los Angeles Dental Clinic That Uses Hospital-Type HVAC Systems to Mitigate Diseases Like COVID-19

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Mi Dentista Dental Clinic in collaboration with a mechanical engineering firm, HVAC Engineering, has set up the first known dental clinic in Los Angeles that uses Negative Pressure Environments to mitigate diseases like COVID-19, namely the disease associated with the SARS-Cov-2 virus.

Novel coronavirus, as the virus is frequently known, is believed to spread via droplets or aerosols produced from coughing, dental procedures, and breathing among others. Thus, the physical proximity between patients and dentists during a typical dental visit may benefit from additional care and attention.

Mi Dentista has set up elegantly-designed high-efficiency negative pressure dental units so that both droplets and aerosols may be rapidly eliminated via a high-speed vacuum. Each unit's reverse flow fan is rated to evacuate up to 2100 CFM (cubic feet of air per minute) which means that the quiet, powerful system may replace the air around every dental unit every 20 seconds. In addition, due to the 6000 CFM rating of the multiple reverse flow fans, the air across the entire dental office may be replaced every 90 seconds. Most importantly, as you can see in the video below, the air around the treatment care area, namely the oral region where dental procedures are carried out, is being constantly replaced and refreshed without interruption.

The negative pressure approach is the same method that large, specialized hospitals use to prevent the transmission of many airborne pathogens like tuberculosis and measles in the form of negative pressure isolation rooms. Yet, without similar support, dentists and dental assistants may have a higher chance of becoming infected and transmitting the disease to others.

"Ventilation systems that provide air movement from a clean (DHCP workstation or area) to contaminated (clinical patient care area) flow direction should be installed...," CDC COVID-19 Guidance for Dental Settings (Updated on May 19, 2020).

"Consider the use of a portable HEPA air filtration unit while the patient is actively undergoing, and immediately following, an aerosol-generating procedure. The use of these units will reduce particle count (including droplets) in the room...." "Consider the use of upper-room ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) as an adjunct to higher ventilation and air cleaning rates."

The Mi Dentista dental team has also implemented other infection control methods recommended by the CDC and the American Dental Association including avoiding placing patients in an enclosed waiting room, no accompanying visitors, repeated disinfection of surfaces during the day, and frequently replacing masks, face shields, gowns, goggles, and gloves. The air evacuated from the dental environment also first goes through a high-efficiency pre-filter and then is treated with high-powered, UV-C radiation to destroy virus particles. While no approach completely and absolutely eliminates the risk of infection, these methods are believed to help reduce it.

Mental Health Awareness License Plate Winning Design

LAFAYETTE, Calif. -- BeingwellCA, a California 501(c)(3), submitted the initial design for the Mental Health Awareness License Plate to California Department of Education for DMV review.

The winning design was selected after a statewide contest held for high school students. Winning artist Anshuree Banerjee took her passion for art to create meaningful imagery for the new Mental Health California license plate.

"I wanted a design that clearly included California as part of the solution and was positive about mental health," said Anshuree, a student at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, California.

"This license plate has the potential of raising millions of dollars for student mental health which are so desperately needed in the post Covid-19 school environment. And it does it without raising taxes," said Graham Wiseman, CEO of BeingwellCA.

Due to Covid-19, this bill will carry over to 2021.

"We have a dedicated team supporting long-term care residents in the Alameda community," says Nicole Howell, Executive Director of Ombudsman Services of Contra Costa, Solano and Alameda. "We are so happy to come together with other organizations and community partners to help the hardworking frontline staff care for our seniors."

This will be the third distribution of gloves, sanitizer, and face masks in the East Bay Area for Ombudsman Services, helping to protect a portion of the 29,000 long-term care residents that it serves.

To reserve supplies, employees of Licensed Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs)and Adult Residential Facilities (ARFs) in Alameda County should visit by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. Facilities will receive an emailed confirmation alerting them to a pickup time and location for Friday morning.

Because this is a contactless pickup, those attending should write the name of their facility on an 8.5 x 11-inch piece of paper and place it on their dashboard.

Friday's distribution in Alameda County will be held in partnership with Creating New Hope, East Bay Community Energy, EBPPE.Org, as well as with the City of Dublin and the California National Guard.
