New Talking Lexa Bear Turns Your Digital Assistant Into Your Forever Friend

AUSTIN, Texas -- Wetwire Robotics today announced they are launching the first in a new line of smart toys geared towards digital assistants like Amazon's Alexa devices. The first model is called Lexa Bear and is a talking teddy bear that is designed to hold an Echo Dot or connect with any Bluetooth device like a mobile phone or tablet. Wetwire Robotics has designed the bear to synchronize its mouth movements in real time to the human voice. It is not limited to pre-recorded audio and can speak with about any audio it's connected to.

A 2017 study by Accenture recently found that 46-percent of U.S. consumers are using voice-enabled digital assistants. As digital assistants like Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant are growing in popularity and abilities, many new and better ways are being developed to interface with the technology.

"It was really exciting when we showed the first talking bears speaking for Alexa to kids and even adults," said Victor Wong, Creator and CEO, Wetwire Robotics. "We saw how much more engaged and alive the technology can be."

Wetwire Robotics goals are to humanize access to digital assistants and AI technology into forms that people can relate to and embrace in their daily lives. Realizing technology is constantly growing and improving, Wetwire began working on Lexa Bear as an interface. Since it is not hard coded with programmed sounds and activities, but can respond in real time, Lexa Bear can continue to grow in its abilities.

"We realized early on that Lexa Bear had to be able to not only react to any audio it was connected to but it also had to focus its mouth response to the human voice," said Travis Redding, lead developer and President, Wetwire Robotics. "It was really challenging to get Lexa to be able to sing mostly the vocals and not react to the music it was hearing. Now Lexa Bear has a speaking voice and can sing to music too."

Lexa Bear(TM) already has all of the skills of the Echo Dot it's paired with such as telling jokes, stories, trivia, games, teaching, singing, and solving problems. When paired with a Bluetooth device, Lexa Bear can talk using any audio producing app. As skills and apps are added every day from around the world, people and families are integrating digital assistants into their daily lives and can add those abilities to Lexa Bear as they develop over time.

Wetwire Robotics will be launching a Kickstarter campaign October 23, 2017.

RoweBots’ RTOS Brings Wearable Technology to Market Faster with Reduced Development Costs

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Today, at the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2017 USA, RoweBots, an embedded software company, announces the immediate availability of WearableOS, a real-time operating system (RTOS) specifically for wearable and IoT-enabled devices that attach to a user or are held by a user to operate.

WearableOS helps OEM developers design off-the-shelf wearable technology faster, simpler and at a lower cost thanks to a complete platform and environment based on lean product development. It incorporates RTOS technology with a special selection of peripheral support, communication protocols, wireless support and HMI plus device and cloud connectivity ready to incorporate seamlessly into a design.

"Wearable technology developers today face a myriad of challenges in creating a wearable that has unique capabilities, as well as has the ability to sense, store, interpret and communicate information about the wearer's surroundings," said Kim Rowe, CEO and founder of RoweBots. "WearableOS not only addresses pressures of cost and time to market, but also helps developers with design challenges related to size, power consumption and security. With WearableOS, we hope to make developers' device ideas a reality - whether it's wearable tech jewelry or personal security gadgets."

The new platform arms developers with a variety of features that are critical components of wearable design, including a range of wireless connectivity options like Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). It also ensures minimal power consumption by providing a selection of processors that feature both inherent low power as well as power management features.

With support for a variety of peripherals and sensors, such as GPS chips that can be quickly integrated into the design, WearableOS allows for various sets of focused capabilities. Given today's challenges in wearable technology security and privacy concerns, RoweBots understands that wearables must be protected from eavesdropping and tampering. WearableOS offers a rich set of security features that a developer can put in place at the foundation to build a secure system and application set.

WearableOS is based on RoweBots' proven Unison RTOS solution, a real-time operating system that offers a complete component set for the development of IoT and M2M Communication Embedded Applications. The RTOS is designed to the well-known POSIX standard, and is optimized for size, modularity and adaptability to system-on-chip solutions, microcontroller units, microprocessor units, digital signal processing systems, field-programmable gate arrays and digital signal controllers. It is intended to help developers take products beyond the prototype level and add value with the opportunity for later expansion and enhancement of the product line.

WearableOS comes with a demonstration package in the form of a low-power watch kit. Featuring a 240 x 240 color display and a BLE connection, the watch kit allows users to quickly learn about WearableOS by developing a device using an open source hardware kit and supplied software.

RoweBots will demonstrate its WearableOS technology at WT Wearables in San Francisco on July 25-26. To learn more, visit http://rowebots.com/en/documents/white-papers .

MAGLITE Declares July as ‘National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month’

ONTARIO, Calif. -- MAGLITE wants motorists and pedestrians to be extra vigilant to save lives during the "vacation months" - July through October - which are the most dangerous months the year for traffic fatalities. So MAGLITE is launching a dedicated web page, and promoting a public education campaign, in observance of the newly minted National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month.

The goal is to reduce fatalities and injuries that occur on our roads and highways in vehicle traffic accidents, especially among pedestrians, who are far likelier to be fatally struck by vehicles at night than in the daytime.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data indicate that three of the four deadliest holiday weekends occur during the "vacation months" - Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day Weekends. And while alcohol-impaired driving is a factor in 29 percent of fatal crashes overall, the rate at which a drunk driver is involved rises significantly on those holiday weekends.

The "vacation months" are also a time for special caution at night. Despite traffic volumes being far lower at night than in the daytime, more than 1/3rd of all fatal crashes occur during the hours of dusk, darkness and dawn. And crashes at night are significantly deadlier than daytime crashes: In the hours from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., the rate of fatalities (per 1,000 crashes) is more than double the daytime rate, rising to nearly 4 times the daytime rate for crashes occurring in the after-midnight hours. And the later it gets, the more often alcohol plays a role: In after-midnight crashes, the likelihood of alcohol-impaired driver involvement rises to nearly 60 percent (compared to about 15 percent in the noon-to-3 p.m. time frame).

The NHTSA defines a pedestrian as anybody who is not in a vehicle - whether it's somebody just traveling in or near a road on foot or somebody who has gotten out of a vehicle on or near a road (e.g., because of a breakdown or a fender-bender). Pedestrians are especially vulnerable at night. Of the 5,376 pedestrians killed by vehicles in 2015 (amounting to 15 percent of all vehicle fatalities), 74 percent were struck at night (rising to 78 percent if you include dusk and dawn accidents).

When a car becomes disabled at night it is a much more dangerous situation then during the daylight hours due to the reduced visibility. A good flashlight with a traffic/safety wand (a plastic cone that fits on the flashlight and glows when the light is turned on), is an important safety item for anyone who drives at night, and even more important for anybody who walks along a road at night.

A series of statistics about the dangers faced by both drivers and pedestrians, and a series of life saving tips to avoid becoming a statistic of roadside dangers, is available at the National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness web page at http://www.nrtsa.org/.

Additionally, MAGLITE will be offering flashlights, traffic/safety wands, and mounting brackets through the http://maglite.com/ website.
