Trauma and Substance Abuse Survivor Turned Writer and Entrepreneur, Shannan Mondor Turns Addiction Into Triumph In Debut Memoir

CALGARY, Alberta -- "HOW IN THE HELL DID I GET HERE? Forever Changing the Genetic Blueprint" (ISBN: 978-0228871224) is a riveting and raw story of how author Shannan Mondor overcame alcoholism and mental illness and broke free from the genetic blueprint of addiction that demonized her family for generations.

She sets you in a front row seat as she shares her life story and experiences, which show the strength, determination and courage of how she no longer wanted to continue with this way of life, and how she would do whatever it took to protect her children from being exposed to a life of addiction that is so normalized and influenced within society.

She teaches about addiction and the consequences of speaking her truth. She fights past fear, loneliness and judgment to end her inner pain that has haunted her for years, and finds inner peace. Along her path she realizes how life is a spiritual journey and there is a lesson to be learned with every experience, personal encounter and relationship. Mondor is sharing her inspiring story in the highly anticipated memoir "HOW IN THE HELL DID I GET HERE? Forever Changing the Genetic Blueprint."

"HOW IN THE HELL DID I GET HERE? Forever Changing the Genetic Blueprint" (Tellwell Publishing, March, 2022), takes readers through Mondor's rehab and recovery journey and showcases how important it is to have a relationship with yourself, that you have the power to change everything, and it all comes from within.

"I've learned that there is nothing more powerful than the strength that I have inside me and EVERYTHING starts there. I am the only one in control of my life. I make all the decisions. By facing my fears and being truthful of who I am, my past, accepting all my good and bad qualities, I've learned to love myself and then I started to heal. This was the most powerful thing I have ever experienced and it has changed my life forever. For the first time in my life, I have complete clarity of who I am, where I am going and what my life purpose is," said Mondor when reflecting on her experience. "I hope that my readers will look at their own life story and be able to relate to what I am saying and make the right decisions for themselves in their own lives."

Not a victim, but a survivor, Mondor reclaimed her power after years of trauma, substance abuse and poor relationships. She now has four beautiful children, a husband and a successful career sharing her story as an inspirational speaker and now as a published author.

In addition to writing and speaking engagements, Mondor has created a brand with the motto "Fear Fighter". It is no surprise that Mondor and her Fear Fighter brand thrive off of promoting living a positive, fearless and powerful lifestyle. "I have dedicated my life to teaching people through my own experiences about addiction about how to find their power within. I speak in depth on how I tackled my fears and what I learned throughout my journey".

‘Cinco De Mayo’ Book Gets Second Edition

AUSTIN, Texas -- The highly anticipated Second Edition of "Cinco de Mayo: What is Everybody Celebrating" (ISBN: 978-1792371936; Condesa Publications) by author Donald W Miles has been released. "Cinco de Mayo: What is Everybody Celebrating" is an informative high school and college level text about the history of Cinco de Mayo.

One of the few age-appropriate texts for teens and young adults learning about the history of the holiday, the book is a deep dive into the French Invasion of Mexico, and why Cinco de Mayo celebrations became so popular within the United States. With a wealth of historical information that can be used year-round to supplement curriculum in Spanish language and history classes, the book is the perfect addition to a classroom.

The original 2006 edition has now been updated to include color photographs in every chapter and maps to help readers navigate the story. There's also a new cover which has already won graphics awards for the book design firm that created it. The photos were taken by the author and his wife (who is originally from Mexico City) during more than 50 years of family visits and travel to as many as 53 cities in Mexico.

"The style is pacey, flowing and dramatic, colorful and often funny. Cinco de Mayo is an enjoyable read for history buffs, no matter what their favorite nation or time is," said Joy Calderwood of Reader's Choice Reviews.

Don Miles brings out many colorful and human aspects often lost in the traditionally technical histories," said Dr. Robert Pierce, Professor Emeritus, Journalism and Communications, University of Florida. "His intimate knowledge of the Mexican culture is reflected in all that he writes."

New Memoir has Grit, Faith and Compassion – Larry Callies, the Black Cowboy Story

ROSENBERG, Texas -- "HERE COMES COWBOY LARRY, STEPPING OUT IN FAITH" (ISBN 978-1667838816) is the biographical story of Larry Callies in his own words, he dreamt from the age of ten of becoming a Cowboy; and his spiritual journey as man of color to the founding of the First Museum honoring the long history of the Black Cowboy Heritage.

Born in El Campo, Texas in 1952, Larry Callies' life begins as the veil of the Segregation Era was lifted, and the unregulated racial divide offered scant opportunities with harsh limitations and constant strife with the rise of civil rights and black empowerment.

This must-read story shares insight into Larry's unshakeable grit, unrelenting compassion, unbending stubbornness, and unmistakable kindness which Larry cultivated while growing up in a segregated Southeast Texas over three decades on ranches, singing Country Western songs at the then segregated Gilley's Nightclub with Gilley's all white band, and life-risking bull penning jobs.

Together, the reader will experience Larry's dream unfolding and take on different shapes through the influences in his life from his Cowboy Father, his Christian Mother, and Famous Cousins to Community Members, Famous Singers, to his eventual tragedy when Larry was diagnosed with Vocal Dysphonia and ultimately ending his budding singing career.

Larry's greatest success came when he accepted, his now famous quote, "I am a Christian first, and a Cowboy second."

"HERE COMES COWBOY LARRY, STEPPING OUT IN FAITH" shares how dreams can transform from a vision into reality with faith; when one door closes, God will offer another path of opportunity.

About the Black Cowboy Museum:

Founded by Larry Callies, the museum preserves the legacy and offers a wider celebration to understanding the hidden story behind Black Cowboys and their integral role in the Western Expansion in the ever-transitioning frontier through historical photos, memorabilia, books, newspapers and more. Covenant Winery Summer Concert Series Debuts Memorial Day Weekend – Monday May 30

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Covenant Winery Summer Concert Series kicks off Memorial Day weekend in Berkeley with acclaimed French/American jazz pianist, composer and arranger Franck Amsallem. Franck has recorded ten CDs under his own name as well as a collaboration, "New York Stories," with (Berkeley's own) Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove, and Danny Gatton on Blue Note.

Born in Oran, French Algeria in 1961, Franck grew up in Nice, France. He spent 20 years in New York City, where he played as a sideman with Gerry Mulligan, Charles Lloyd, Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Chambers, Maria Schneider, Kevin Mahogany and Harry Belafonte as well as Gary Bartz, Bobby Watson, Rick Margitza, and Blood Sweat and Tears.

In 1992 Franck released "Out a Day," an award-winning trio CD with the late bassist, Gary Peacock, and drummer Bill Stewart. The recording established him internationally as an in-demand jazz pianist and composer. Franck returned to France in 2001, and his most recent album recorded there is "Gotham Goodbye," a quartet featuring Cuban saxophonist Irving Acao. It has garnered superb reviews worldwide.

East Bay Connection

What brings Franck to Covenant Winery, in Berkeley? In the mid-1970s, young Franck was part of a jazz big band at the French National Music Conservatory in Nice, France. Also in the band was Covenant founding winemaker (and saxophonist), Jeff Morgan, who eventually performed with Franck for some 20 years in New York and Europe before trading in his horn for a wine thief and a second career as a winemaker. But in 1987, the two musicians were co-band leaders for the house band in Monte Carlo at Prince Rainier's Grand Casino in Monaco. Their last gig together was New Year's Eve 1995 at Gotham Bar and Grill in New York City.

That's the year Jeff officially retired from the music business to become a wine journalist and winemaker. During the recent Covid pandemic, Jeff had some time on his hands and started practicing his saxophone again. It had been more than 20 years since he'd touched the instrument. Today, a year later, Jeff has regained his playing chops. He'll be joining Franck at Covenant Winery for their first performance together in 27 years on May 30. Also performing will be Bay Area musicians Gerald Cleaver on drums and Jeff Denson on bass.

"Franck and I have been best friends for nearly 50 years," says Morgan. "But I've been steeped in wine for so long, I never thought I'd play music again - especially with Franck. It's a little scary to get on the bandstand with one of the world's top jazz pianists. But it's also really exciting! I'm looking forward to this long overdue musical reunion."

Other bands to be featured in the music series include the Cyril Grimsich Trio, Felsen, and Morgan's own funk band, Free Run, featuring personnel from the Bay Area. For the complete Covenant Winery concert schedule, click here -

Performances take place between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Except for Amsallem's Monday, Memorial Day appearance, all concerts are on Sundays. Door opens at 1:30.

Tickets can be purchased in advance, and $20 will get you a glass of wine (choice of white, rose or red), light snacks and concert admission. Advanced reservations can be made here -

Covenant Winery is located at 1102 Sixth St. in Berkeley, California. Learn more:

Isn’t It Possible to Promote Literacy? Net Profits from 10th Anniversary Edition of ‘Little Green’ will go to Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Paraphrase, LLC, the publisher of "Little Green" (ISBN: 978-0981587943), is donating 500 copies of a special anniversary edition to Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California (RIFSoCal). For 10 years, "Little Green" has been asking, "Isn't it possible?" The frog still can't be a goose, horse, or koi, but it is possible to promote literacy and motivate children to read by providing new books to create home libraries for underserved children in Southern California.

That is, in fact, the mission of the 501(c)(3) organization Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California ( The special edition, celebrating the 50th anniversary of RIFSoCal and the 10th anniversary of "Little Green," is also available on through the end of 2022. Paraphrase has pledged all proceeds from the anniversary edition to RIFSoCal.

"Little Green" is a picture-book for 0-7 year olds, written by Arnold Rudnick, with illustrations by Marcelo Gorenman, featuring a little green frog on a quest to be special. He hops around from animal to animal asking "Isn't it possible?" he can be one of them and do the special things they do. While the reader learns animal groups, skills, traits and sounds, Little Green learns almost anything is possible, but he must start by being himself.

"I hope that someday 'Little Green' and 'Isn't it possible?' will be as familiar to children, and empowering, as 'I Think I Can!' from 'The Little Engine That Could,'" Rudnick says. "Reading makes ALMOST anything possible. I am really excited to partner with Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California on this mission of literacy."

"We are delighted to thank Arnold Rudnick for his most generous donation of 'Little Green,'" says Carol Henault, Executive Director of RIFSoCal. "I can't wait to share this inspirational story with the children in our Motivational Reading Program. Inspiring children's passion for reading is the greatest gift we can give them on their personal road to success. That, and frogs.

"We can always use more frog stories! As Los Angeles and Orange County's largest children's literacy organization, RIFSoCal works every day to share the magic of reading for fun and pleasure with our most vulnerable children. As of our 50th anniversary of celebrating literacy for all children, we will have served 1.7M children, and provided them with more than 5.3M books."

Legacy Launch Pad publishing releases memoir about growing up in dysfunctional Mormon family by Diana Cannon Ragsdale

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Legacy Launch Pad Publishing has released "Loose Cannons: A Memoir of Mania and Mayhem in a Mormon Family" (ISBN: 978-195655200 (ebook); 978-1956955217, 978-1956955224 (paperback); 978-1956955231 (hardback)), written by Diana Cannon Ragsdale.

In "Loose Cannons", Ragsdale tells the chaotic story of being raised by her schizophrenic father in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the wake of her depressed mother abandoning the family. The story covers more than 60 years of complex family history and is interspersed with excerpts from Ragsdale's mother's journal, which detail decades of abuse, mental illness and family secrets.

While covering difficult topics, Ragsdale's memoir also keeps an optimistic and humorous touch, with a changing perspective as she ages from girl to woman. Despite the difficulties she faces, Ragsdale details how she's learned from her mistakes as well as the mistakes of her family, all while repairing her relationships with her parents-and herself.

The book has already received praise from authors and mental health professionals across the globe. "'Loose Cannons' is an unforgettable memoir, a remarkable and astonishing story which will leave you laughing, crying and cringing until the last page," says Warren Driggs, author of "Mormon Boy, A Tortoise in the Road" and "Swimming in Deep Water."

"An unflinching account of mental illness, abuse and neglect hiding in plain sight," says Carrie Gaykowski, CSW. "The memoir is courageous, agonizing and demonstrates the resilience of the human spirit."

Publisher Anna David agrees. "Diana tells a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading, and she tells it with more honesty, gumption and humor than you might have thought possible," David says.

As Ragsdale's story shows, abuse and neglect do not make anyone unlovable or unable to love themselves. With determination, perspective and a sense of humor, it is possible to heal from serious emotional wounds with grace.

"Loose Cannons" is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, among many other outlets.

National Nurses Week Kicks Off with Virtual Portrait Exhibition Honoring Pandemic Healthcare Workers

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Producer and photographer Mariana Tosca of Blue Jasper Productions and Tosca Photography announces the launch of "Covid Courageous" ( This unique virtual exhibition blends photographic portraiture with interviews of frontline healthcare workers, which spotlight each individual's personal pandemic experience.

The permanent virtual exhibition will open at the beginning of National Nurses Week, an annual week-long celebration which begins May 6 and ends on May 12, 2022, the birthday of Florence Nightingale who was the founder of modern nursing. This moving tribute to nurses and healthcare providers comes alive through the words and images of frontline workers who were each photographed with an item which represented their personal experience while working on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Christopher Johnson and Glenn Rossney of The Misty Falls Motion Picture Company assisted in this endeavor.

Photographer Mariana Tosca shares, "Throughout the pandemic, the collective nursing and frontline worker community has served with unparalleled courage and an unflinching commitment to duty. I wanted to offer my skills in gratitude and recognition of theirs. While the exchange of energy isn't commensurate with their sacrifice and risk, the gesture was meant to remind them that they are deeply valued and appreciated, and that what they've done in the face of an unprecedented global disaster has made all the difference."

She continues, "These remarkable people have put their lives on the line every day, under the most perilous circumstances, to save others. I wanted to take them off of the frontlines for a little while to celebrate their efforts and make them feel like the superstars that they are."

Filmmaker Christopher Johnson adds, "Imagine what it must take for someone to help people during a crisis when that very act of compassion could cost them their lives. It's daunting to consider. I have profound respect for these extraordinary people, so I am very happy to have helped showcase their stories, let them know we care, and tell them firsthand that we're grateful for all they've done and continue to do."
