Probiotics for Dogs and Cats? Benefits of Pet Probiotic Supplements Make Them a ‘Must’ for Pet Nutrition

Author: Ask Ariel Your Pet Nutritionist
Dateline: Dana Point, California (DANA POINT, Calif.)  | Tue, 02 Jul 2013

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “According to Susan Blake Davis, Pet Nutritionist at Ask Ariel Your Pet Nutritionist, 'Probiotics for dogs and cats are quickly becoming an invaluable part of pet nutrition.' More veterinarians are prescribing pet probiotics as they see how much these supplements benefit dogs and cats. Probiotics are friendly bacteria that naturally inhabit the digestive tract.”

A R T I C L E:

According to Susan Blake Davis, Pet Nutritionist at Ask Ariel Your Pet Nutritionist, "Probiotics for dogs and cats are quickly becoming an invaluable part of pet nutrition." More veterinarians are prescribing pet probiotics as they see how much these supplements benefit dogs and cats. Probiotics are friendly bacteria that naturally inhabit the digestive tract.

These beneficial bacteria can provide many benefits by promoting a healthy immune system, warding off pathogens and improving a pet's digestion.

Many dogs and cats suffer from chronic digestive problems including diarrhea, vomiting and even inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). As a result, pet owners are seeking more natural treatments as an alternative to pet medications in an effort to help their pet's long-term digestive health.

"Veterinarians are seeing the benefits of prescribing pet probiotics as they can help prevent recurring infections," says Davis. Just as probiotics are mainstream in human nutrition, they are now becoming an essential part of pet nutrition. She says that some pet food manufacturers are including probiotics in their pet food and treats and expects to see this trend continue.

"Probiotics are not just beneficial for dogs and cats that have digestive problems," says Davis. "They are helpful for overall good pet nutrition but can be especially helpful for pets with allergies and dogs and cats that have recently taken antibiotics."

Antibiotics can deplete the body's supply of "good bacteria" and supplementing with a quality probiotic can replenish this beneficial intestinal flora, strengthening the pet's immune system. Antibiotics, steroids, poor quality diets, exposure to outside germs and chemicals can all reduce the friendly bacteria in a pet's intestines making the pet more susceptible to disease.

Davis is concerned though that many suppliers of both human and pet probiotics use inferior manufacturing processes and thus the products either don't contain the live bacteria promised on the bottle or can't survive the pet's stomach acid.

When looking for a quality probiotic for your dog or cat, taking a close look at the product label and the company's manufacturing practices is important. Just because the label says "contains probiotics" doesn't mean the pet will benefit from them. Many products contain limited strains of bacteria, are not in a medium enabling the bacteria to survive or the potency and purity of the product has not been third-party tested.

Davis' company, Ask Ariel Your Pet Nutritionist, offers holistic supplements for dogs and cats which have been third party tested to ensure they contain the ingredients they promise.

To learn more about these type of products for pets, please visit the Ask Ariel store online at: http://www.askariel.com/dog-probiotics-p/81.htm .

Davis is passionate about holistic pet care and consults with pet owners nationwide, teaching them how to use nutrition and supplements along with conventional veterinary care to keep their pets happy and healthy.

Big Hearts, Hammers and Nails: Project Pawsitive Gives Makeover to Another Deserving Animal Shelter in Need

Author: The Project Pawsitive Foundation
Dateline: Hampton, New Hampshire (HAMPTON, N.H.)  | Wed, 05 Sep 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “The Project Pawsitive Foundation (www.projectpawsitive.com), a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to renovating animal rescues and shelters in need, has selected the Salem Animal Rescue League in Salem, New Hampshire as the team's fifth animal shelter makeover. The project begins on Friday, September 14.”

A R T I C L E:

The Project Pawsitive Foundation (www.projectpawsitive.com), a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to renovating animal rescues and shelters in need, has selected the Salem Animal Rescue League in Salem, New Hampshire as the team's fifth animal shelter makeover. The project begins on Friday, September 14.

"With donations dwindling and pet surrenders increasing, numerous animal rescues and shelters across the country don't have the funds to even think about fixing their buildings," said Jill Sullivan Grueter, Founder and Team Leader of The Project Pawsitive Foundation, who left her career to start the organization after the death of her 55-year-old father and 2-year-old rescue dog changed her outlook on life. "It's not easy to do what we're doing. It's renovation to renovation, but just when we think we won't have the funds to renovate another shelter or rescue, it works out."

From New England to Tennessee, the Project Pawsitive Team is now making their mark at the Salem Animal Rescue League (www.sarl-nh.org) in Salem, N.H. on September 14, 15, and 16. With the help of their premier sponsor for this renovation, Pet Life Stores (www.petlifestores.com) and personal donations from animal lovers, the team will focus on installing new vinyl flooring, framing a quarantine area for dogs rescued from the south, fixing air circulation issues, installing a fenced in meet-and-greet area, and fixing broken windows.

Founded in 2009, the team of four friends from New Hampshire head to animal rescues and shelters in desperate need providing them with their version of Extreme Home Makeover renovations. There have even been times when the renovations they provide prevent these animal organizations from having to close their doors permanently.

"Speaking for The Board of Directors, Staff and all our wonderful volunteers at SARL, we are honored to have been selected by the Project Pawsitive Team and very thankful to Pet Life for supporting this endeavor," said Patricia Mack Manager of Development & Media Relations at the Salem Animal Rescue League. "We can't wait to get started on the renovations. Close to 1,000 animals a year pass through our doors so you can imagine the wear and tear that takes place. Project Pawsitive and Pet Life, what a wonderful team, our cats and dogs are lucky to be the beneficiaries of this collaboration."

The Project Pawsitive Team continues to raise funds for their next renovation in Salem, N.H. Their sponsor, Pet Life (www.petlifestores.com) and its vendors are matching donations and all donors are entered to win a one-year supply of high-quality pet food from Pet Life. To donate $10 toward the renovation, go to http://fundly.com/help-project-pawsitive-and-pet-life-renovate-animal-shelters-in-great-need .

"Pet Life is proud to sponsor The Project Pawsitive Foundation and help them renovate animal rescues and shelters in need," said Pete Risano, President of Pet Life Stores. "The Salem Animal Rescue League is a fantastic organization and we are thrilled to be part of the weekend-long renovation at their site on September 14, 15, and 16."

The Project Pawsitive team films their renovations and shares them with their 11,500 fans on Facebook (www.facebook.com/projectpawsitive), web site (www.projectpawsitive.com), and YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/MissionPawsibleShow).

"We love filming what we do because it helps people see how much these renovations are needed and the importance of adoption and spaying and neutering pets," said Sullivan Grueter. "Plus, we're having a blast. It's truly a gift to help these amazing rescues."

About the Salem Animal Rescue League:

The Salem Animal rescue League (SARL) was formed in 1992 with the goal of rescuing 50 stray and unwanted animals in the Salem, N.H. area. Today, the Salem Animal Rescue League rescues and adopts over 800 dogs and cats per year. In 1993, SARL was instrumental in changing N.H. Legislation to make animal abuse a felony. New Pet Parenting Advice Given by Philadelphia Main Line Veterinarian on Lifetime Television Series

Author: Ask The Cat Doctor
Dateline: Ardmore, Pennsylvania (ARDMORE, Pa.)  | Fri, 08 Jun 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Philadelphia area veterinarian, Dr. Shelby Neely of Ask The Cat Doctor, will appear on the women's one-hour morning show, The Balancing Act, on Lifetime Television June 12 and 13, 2012 to discuss the important, but often overlooked, topic of grooming your pets at home. Known as 'The Cat Doctor' for both her feline only veterinary practice on the Philadelphia Main Line and for her award-winning website AskTheCatDoctor.”

A R T I C L E:

Philadelphia area veterinarian, Dr. Shelby Neely of Ask The Cat Doctor, will appear on the women's one-hour morning show, The Balancing Act, on Lifetime Television June 12 and 13, 2012 to discuss the important, but often overlooked, topic of grooming your pets at home. Known as "The Cat Doctor" for both her feline only veterinary practice on the Philadelphia Main Line and for her award-winning website AskTheCatDoctor.com, Dr. Neely's knowledge and experience on the subject is invaluable.

The special television series highlights the unique FURminator de-shedding tool and the company's other professionally designed, in-home grooming products. The first segment, airing on June 12, 2012, discusses the treatment of allergies to pets. By reducing excess shedding through proper pet grooming techniques, allergic pet owners can live comfortably with pets.

In an article discussing the topic, Dr. Neely wrote: "Many cat owners with an allergy to cats do not follow their dermatologist's orders when told to get rid of the cat. They would rather suffer with their allergies than give up their pet. Having witnessed these allergic owners continue to live with their pets, I have come to know that there are measures a pet parent can take to live happily and comfortably with their pet."

The second segment, airing June 13, 2012, focuses on preventing, instead of treating, cat hairballs. Dr. Neely visits a Florida animal shelter and describes hairballs as not only messy and unsightly, but potentially dangerous for your cat.

As she explained in an article for the Cat Fancier's Association newsletter, cat hairballs are a serious matter: "If you have ever seen a cat trying to bring up a hairball, you know how alarming the sight can be. The truth is that hairballs make your cat uncomfortable and can lead to problems such as vomiting, constipation or, even worse, an intestinal obstruction that requires surgery for hairballs that are too large to pass through stool or vomit."

To learn more about treating pet allergies and preventing hairballs, check your local listings and tune in June 12 and 13, 2012 at 7 a.m. (EDT) for this one-of-a-kind series featuring Dr. Shelby Neely, The Cat Doctor, on The Balancing Act airing on Lifetime Television. It's a must-see for pet parents everywhere who want to live in harmony with their pets.

Nylabone Launches Romp’n Chomp Treat Toys and Treat Refills

Author: Nylabone
Dateline: Neptune City, New Jersey (NEPTUNE CITY, N.J.)  | Fri, 10 Feb 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Leave it to Nylabone(R), the makers of safe, healthy chews since 1955, to combine a dog's two favorite pastimes - playing and eating - into one great new product line: Romp'n Chomp(TM) Treat Toys. The new line, available in pet specialty stores this spring, makes treats last longer while keeping dogs entertained and promoting safe, healthy chewing. Nylabone is a subsidiary of Central Garden & Pet Company (NASDAQ : CENT).”

A R T I C L E:

Leave it to Nylabone(R), the makers of safe, healthy chews since 1955, to combine a dog's two favorite pastimes - playing and eating - into one great new product line: Romp'n Chomp(TM) Treat Toys. The new line, available in pet specialty stores this spring, makes treats last longer while keeping dogs entertained and promoting safe, healthy chewing. T.F.H./Nylabone is a subsidiary of Central Garden & Pet Company (NASDAQ:CENT).

"Pet parents have made it clear that they want quality, value and safety in their dogs' play products," says Mike Connelly, Vice President of Marketing for Nylabone(R) Products based in Neptune City, N.J. "The new Romp'n Chomp(TM) Treat Toys are essentially toys which offer unlimited play value, and can also be filled with our natural, made-in-the-USA treats. The marriage of treat and toy helps to extend the value and life of the treats over a longer period of time."

He adds that filling the durable and long-lasting toys with treats or kibble allows pet parents to use the toys as rewards for training and behavior reinforcement. Furthermore, healthy chewing helps keeps a dog's teeth in tip-top shape.

Treat Toys Varieties:

The new Freezer Bone features a snap-in Nylabone treat shaped like Nylabone's classic Souper. Great for teething puppies as well as dogs of all sizes, the bone has fill n' freeze corners for added fun. Available in two sizes and made in the USA, it encourages appropriate chewing and its ridges help to clean teeth.

The fun and inventive Shish-Ka-Bone is an interchangeable treat holder with chicken flavored nylon ends and nylon center. It features chew disks that slide on to the middle of the toy for added chewing fun. Dogs can't get the toys apart thanks to the safety lock mechanism that holds the chew disks in place. Providing longer-lasting fun and chewing for powerful chewers, this innovative toy has textured nubs for added dental benefits. It is available in two sizes to suite all size dogs, and replacement disks are available.

The Souper Treat Toy is made to look like Nylabone's popular Souper, but features a snap-in treat bar. Designed with power-chewers in mind, this new made-in-the-USA treat toy satisfies a dog's natural chewing instincts.

It spins, it wobbles, it helps clean teeth and massage gums: it's the rubber Triple Treat Toy! Featuring snap-in Nylabone exclusive treats shaped like the popular Nylabone Souper, this ingenious three-armed toy will keep dogs occupied longer! Made in the USA, it encourages independent play and helps promote good dental health.

What says dog more than fetching a stick? Dogs love retrieving and chewing on sticks, so Nylabone created the rubber Hollow Stick Treat Toy. Like a stick found outside, it's an easy shape for dogs to grasp, and it provides hours of interactive play and retrieval. This stick, however, has a hollow core that can be filled with a Nylabone Treat Bar. And, like other Nylabone products, chewing on this stick will massage gums and help clean teeth.

The rubber Treat Ball is a versatile toy that's great for toss-and-play fun. It has shape pockets that can be filled with peanut butter and interior spaces for a variety of Nylabone treats like the Treat Bars, Healthy Edible Chews, or Treat Bits.

Finally, the rubber Wobbler Treat Toy is sure to please all dogs! Fill the center with Nylabone Treat Bars or Healthy Edible Chews. Or, smear the hollows with peanut butter and freeze it for longer-lasting play. With a weighted-bottom, the toy wobbles and is easy to grip yet its space-capsule shape makes for erratic bouncing fun. This is one treat toy that is sure to please!

The new Nylabone(R) Romp'n Chomp(TM) Treat Toys and refill treats, disks, bars and treat bits will be available in pet specialty stores this spring, with suggested retail prices ranging from $4.09 to $30.99.

About Nylabone(R) Products:

Bio-Medical Services has received USDA approval and is now offering ACTT(TM) - allergy drop immunotherapy - as an alternative method for administering allergy treatment for pet allergy patients. An in-house pilot study is now underway, and preliminary findings are expected in the Fall of 2012.

"With two options for immunotherapy, we can now better tailor treatment to the temperament of the patient, and lifestyle of the pet owner," says Dr. Susan Keesee, Chief Scientific Officer at Bio-Medical Services. "This will allow more patients to receive the allergy treatment they need."

Bio-Medical Services has been following the use of sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops) in humans as an alternative method for administering allergy treatment. Allergy drops have been widely used in Europe, and are now gaining favor in the U.S.; the first randomized trial in humans was conducted in 1986 with proven efficacy. In a 2010 study conducted by the University of Wisconsin Veterinary School, sublingual immunotherapy was shown to be effective in reducing symptoms and allergen-specific IgE levels in dogs as well (*Note 1). Allergy drops are now being offered for canine allergy treatment by a select few veterinary teaching hospitals. "Because of its proven efficacy in humans, and early success shown in canines, we feel confident that sublingual immunotherapy is a safe and effective treatment modality," says Keesee.

As the gap between human and veterinary medicine narrows, Bio-Medical Services remains in the forefront of serum allergy testing and treatment, providing the most current and effective medicine for pet allergy patients. Bio-Medical Services has achieved many "firsts" in the care of pet allergies. They were the first to offer ELISA serum testing for canine, feline and equine patients.

In 2004, Bio-Medical services was the first to introduce the practice of separating mold, mite and insect allergens into separate treatment from pollen, fiber and epithelia allergens to the veterinary field - following the convention used in human allergy treatment. Currently, Bio-Medical Services is the only laboratory to offer five treatment protocols based on the patient's age, weight, breed, species, and clinical history. And now with two options for administering immunotherapy, patients receive even more customized and effective care for pet allergies.

About Bio-Medical Services:

Bio-Medical Services is a veterinary reference laboratory specializing in allergy testing and treatment for dogs, cats and horses. Founded in 1989, Bio-Medical Services was the first laboratory to develop a commercial application for in vitro allergy diagnostics in the veterinary industry. Bio-Medical Services is based in Austin, TX. Visit http://www.bmslab.com to learn more.

Racetrack Kitties: Teen Jockey Races to Save Cats’ Lives

Author: Eswan Flores
Dateline: Los Angeles, California (LOS ANGELES, Calif.)  | Thu, 02 Feb 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Eswan Flores wanted to give back to the non-profit organization, FixNation, that worked to control the cat population at the Los Alamitos Race Course where he began his horse-racing career so he decided to sponsor them.”

A R T I C L E:

Eswan Flores wanted to give back to the non-profit organization, FixNation, that worked to control the cat population at the Los Alamitos Race Course where he began his horse-racing career so he decided to sponsor them.

FixNation is a non-profit organization that offers free spaying and neutering of stray and feral cats in the greater Los Angeles area.

"They've been very helpful in controlling the cat population at the Los Alamitos Race Course and people will soon see their logo on my pants," says Flores. "What a great way to combine my compassion for cats and horse racing."

It was reported that several hundred homeless cats and kittens were living at the racetrack. To date, approximately 100 have been spayed and neutered.

Training was provided to teach Flores and his manager how to humanely and safely trap the cats. Their compassion was clearly embraced by other racetrack employees who also care for the cats.

"FixNation has made horse racing history while bringing smiles to our faces, specifically by having our logo worn by jockey Flores," says Karn Myers, clinic director/founder/COO of FixNation, Inc. "I simply cannot thank Flores enough for being so supportive of our organization and raising public awareness."

Elizabeth Cava, a trapping trainer at FixNation, adds that, "It was so reassuring to see that they sought out a humane solution - a life-based solution - rather than the only other alternative - trap and kill."

About Eswan Flores:

Flores is an 18-year old high school senior and a native of Mexico. He started going to the track in Santa Anita when he was eight while his father worked as a groom. At 10, he would ride his bike to the Arcadia track, studying horses. Friends and family took him to ride at ranches. He is quickly making a name for himself in thoroughbred horse racing at one of the most premier tracks in the country. He has been interviewed by multiple entities including: the Los Angeles Times; PBS and Fox News.

About FixNation:

FixNation, a non-profit corporation, has a mission to reduce the population of homeless cats by sterilizing as many as possible. In addition, by consistently demonstrating the effectiveness of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), it seeks to bring about changes in public policy so that TNR becomes the officially sanctioned and government-funded approach to homeless cat management. It supports and promotes all humane initiatives and education to bring about the day of "No More Homeless Cats in L.A."

Nylabone Launches New Grain-Free Dog Biscuits

Author: Nylabone
Dateline: Neptune City, New Jersey (NEPTUNE CITY, N.J.)  | Thu, 05 Jan 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Consumers in the Southeast United States are the first in the country to gobble up the new, all-natural GRAIN-FREE DOG BISCUITS from Nylabone, the makers of safe, healthy chews since 1955. Nylabone has partnered with Costco Warehouses from Florida to North Carolina and Tennessee to market the new treats on a first-come, first-served limited basis.”

A R T I C L E:

Consumers in the Southeast United States are the first in the country to gobble up the new, all-natural GRAIN-FREE DOG BISCUITS from Nylabone(R), the makers of safe, healthy chews since 1955. Nylabone has partnered with Costco Warehouses from Florida to North Carolina and Tennessee to market the new treats on a first-come, first-served limited basis.

"Our dogs' ancestors' diets did not include grain, corn or other fillers," says Mike Connelly, Vice President of Marketing for Nylabone(R) Products based in Neptune City, N.J. "We at Nylabone know that pet parents want the healthiest, most natural products for our pets, and these new grain-free dog treats are just that."

Connelly says that veterinarians have known what many pet lovers have not: the link between a dog's allergies and "unnatural" food fillers like wheat and corn. In his book "The Holistic Health Guide: Natural Care for the Whole Dog," holistic pet care expert Doug Knueven, DVM, says "Grains contained in pet foods contribute to the widespread problem of canine allergies. You do not see wolves-our dogs' wild counterparts-out grazing in the corn field."

Rich in antioxidants and slow-cooked to help maintain nutrients, the new Grain-Free Dog Biscuits from Nylabone are made in the USA. The tasty biscuits are turkey-flavored and contain wholesome ingredients like peas, turkey meat, blueberries, cranberries and flaxseed.

Just as important is what they do not include: added sugar, molasses or salt; artificial flavors or colors; and preservatives. They contain no wheat, corn, rice, soy, or other grains. The new treats are perfect for sensitive stomachs and the fresh, healthful ingredients help build a strong and healthy immune system.

Only 8 calories each, Nylabone Grain Free Dog Biscuits are made for all dogs to enjoy from small to large. This allows pet parents to conveniently control portions and decide on how much to treat their dog.

The new products are available for a limited time only in Costco Warehouse in North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Puerto Rico. They are available in 4-pound "pantry packs" for $9.99.

Pet owners can attend Woofstock 2011 next month, where Santa photos and a Silent Auction fund raiser for PAWS will be among the attractions. Smiley Dog, the local pet food delivery service, announced the event which will also feature a pet food bank, local pet vendors, free nail trims, pet massages, and healthy pet foods.

Woofstock will be held on Saturday, December 3, from 12 - 4 p.m. at the Smiley Dog warehouse located at 23303 Highway 99 in Edmonds. Woofstock is an annual celebration bringing Seattle area pets and their people together with industry experts to learn about pet nutrition, sample new products, support local vendors, grab some groovy deals and pay no sales tax. Admission is free.

"We keep hearing from our clients that Woofstock is the one event that they look forward to each year," said Craig Weindling, Alpha Woof at Smiley Dog. "It's the one day each year that we invite folks to come to us instead of showing up at their door. We're thrilled to support our local vendors and help PAWS with the wonderful work they do in the community."

Local vendors featured this year include Himalayan Dog Chews, Aussie Pet Mobile, Hands to Paws Massage, Litter Spinner, Magic Photo, New Roots Organics, Northwest Naturals and The Whole Pup. All products collected in the event's pet food bank will be donated to PAWS. The event is co-sponsored by Canidae and Precise pet foods.

The Silent Auction features items from local artists and businesses. Packages include a Seattle Mariners autographed baseball, box seats, and game bats. Attendance for two at the 2012 Seattle International Film Festival Opening Night Gala is also up for bid.

More information about the event is available at www.SmileyDog.com or by calling (206) 903-9631.

Woofstock 2011 is produced by Smiley Dog, which provides free delivery of healthy pet foods. The locally owned company began operations in 1992 to offer busy pet owners a dependably convenient way to feed healthy foods.
