Crawl Space Door Systems, Inc. Announces Court Case Win Against Competitor Making False Claims

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- On September 24, 2013, Smart Vent filed a lawsuit against Crawl Space Door Systems, Inc. in the NJ Federal Court, case 1:13-cv-05691-JBS-KMW. Crawl Space Door Systems, Inc. filed a counter-claim. The lawsuit is now over and Crawl Space Door Systems won.

"We're happy to announce that the Federal Court ruling finalized what we've known all along - that Crawl Space Door Systems' engineered flood vents are FEMA and NFIP compliant," William G. Sykes, owner, Crawl Space Door Systems, says.

As of October 24, 2019, some of the jury findings revealed that Smart Vent (SV) was unable to prove that Crawl Space Door Systems (CSDS) made false statements about the coverage of CSDS's flood vents; or made false or misleading statements about the purchase and use of CSDS's flood vents to reduce flood insurance premiums.

However, CSDS was able to prove that SV made false claims about CSDS' product statements. More importantly, CSDS was able to prove that SV actually harmed CSDS's business in terms of declining sales and loss of goodwill. CSDS was also able to prove their flood vents do reduce flood insurance premiums.

"We're happy justice prevailed," Sykes says. "SV has a history of filing lawsuits against competitors, but this time we won."

Other companies that SV has filed lawsuits against include: AAA Louvers and Millworks, Inc.; USA Floodair Vents, LTD.; and Vinylast, Inc. They're all out of business now.

Arresting Literary Thriller Brings the Paranoid, Go-Go Miami of 1984 to Life

RICHMOND, Va. -- Haywire Books announces the release of its first title this fall, Jon Sealy's "The Edge of America" (ISBN: 978-1950182008). Drugs. Money. The CIA. Miami in the 1980s evokes a high-wire world of money, criminals, espionage, and plenty of glitz, all of which come to life in this arresting South Florida noir.

"I wrote 'The Edge of America' as a result of the 2008 financial crisis," Sealy said. "That fall, fresh out of graduate school, I was adjunct teaching and selling TVs at Circuit City. In the course of a month, my bank failed, the university where I was teaching restructured, and Circuit City filed for bankruptcy. I was out two jobs and a bank and didn't understand any of it."

Sealy's research led him down two paths. His study of the Great Depression yielded his first novel, "The Whiskey Baron" (Hub City Press, 2014), which is about a bootlegger's crumbling whiskey empire in a South Carolina cotton mill town. His study of the 1980s Savings & Loan Crisis gave him "The Edge of America," a South Florida noir in the vein of Graham Greene, Elmore Leonard and Don Winslow.

"The Edge of America" tells the story of Bobby West, the CFO for a Miami holding company and CIA front. After over-leveraging his business in the go-go 1980s financial culture, West turns to a deal-with-the-devil money laundering operation-a deal that quickly goes south when West's daughter makes off with $3 million out of a safe in his house.

With echoes of Iran-Contra and the Orwellian surveillance state, this novel explores greed, power and the limits of the American dream. It was immediately greeted with praise from booksellers and reviewers upon release this fall. The Southern Independent Booksellers Association (SIBA) placed it on its quarterly "Okra Picks" list.

"Sealy has created characters so thorough and a plot so vivid and intense that I had to keep reminding myself it was fiction," said Carl Kranz, a bookseller at Fountain Bookstore in Richmond, Va., adding that "The Edge of America" was "one of the most exciting books I have ever read."

About Jon Sealy:

Jon Sealy is the author of "The Whiskey Baron" (Hub City Press, 2014) and "The Edge of America" (Haywire Books, 2019). Hailed as a "grand new talent" (Bret Lott) and a "significant new voice in Southern fiction" (Ron Rash), Sealy is a native of upstate South Carolina and currently lives in Richmond, Va.

ShopMyCause Launches in Virginia to Power Investment in Local Communities

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- ShopMyCause, a socially conscious e-commerce start-up, has launched in Virginia this month with a unique model that connects local businesses and customers to raise money for community organizations serving kids.

Tech innovator Chris Martin is initially targeting the shopping platform (https://shopmycause.org) to serve three key Virginia markets: Greater Richmond, northern Virginia and Hampton Roads.

"ShopMyCause is a socially conscious e-commerce startup working to give consumers and businesses more options to connect in ways that power investment back into our communities," said Martin, a Richmond resident with 25 years of experience in technology and finance.

"As parents we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the educators, coaches, and other caretakers who invest their love and energy to help our children learn and grow. It is essential we continue to use technology creatively to expand options for the business community to funnel more funding to these heroes, so all our children are given the opportunities they deserve."

This new online shopping platform helps local businesses by promoting their goods and services to community parents and other supporters. ShopMyCause is currently engaging businesses who are interested in attracting new customers while making a positive impact. These businesses craft offers that are listed on the site with a percentage of each sale going to support youth focused organizations.

"Businesses are asked all the time for money to support worthy causes. Unfortunately, it is typically hard for them to see whether their financial support is helping their bottom line. This limits what they are willing to invest."

Chris expands on the benefits of the concept: "The ShopMyCause platform creates a much stronger link to real business results. When doing good translates directly to more business, it opens up entirely new possibilities."

Schools, PTAs, athletic teams, nonprofits, and others are partnering with ShopMyCause to offer their boards, parents, and fundraising teams the platform. Where other national businesses typically give only a small percentage, ShopMyCause works with caring local businesses and targets a much higher rate so customers' collective purchases make a big impact. Local businesses support local organizations so both the businesses and kids gain.

"We are excited about our partnership with ShopMyCause," said Ingrid Aardahl, owner of Balanced Yoga, a community business in Burke, Virginia. "This allows us to serve new customers while giving back to the local schools and other organizations helping kids. It makes sense for our business and is more aligned with our values than other marketing we've done in the past."

ShopMyCause is currently focused on expanding its presence in the Greater Richmond, northern Virginia and Hampton Roads markets in the coming months and will be moving into other Virginia markets and beyond in 2020.

Individuals interested in learning more about how this platform could support a business or nonprofit should contact Chris Martin at chris@shopmycause.org or visit the website at https://shopmycause.org.

New Flood Vent Can Reduce Flood Insurance Costs by Up to 85 Percent

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- It's time to prepare for more downpours warns NOAA (Climate.gov). Heavy rain has increased across most of the United States, and is only likely to continue to do so. In fact, climate change is projected to increase the size of the flood plain by as much as 45% in the next 100 years. A new flood vent introduced by Crawl Space Door Systems, Inc. can help concerned home and business owners protect their property and save money too.

Most standard homeowner insurance policies do not cover floods and people have to turn to the National Flood Insurance program or private insurance for flood coverage. These policies are expensive. The new ICC Breakaway Flood Vent can save people up to 85 percent on these policies.

"Getting your home FEMA-compliant does not have to be expensive or complicated," William G. Sykes, owner, Crawl Space Door Systems, says.

This flood vent available from Crawl Space Door Systems is designed to meet FEMA, NFIP and ICC requirements for engineered flood vents in all 50 states. And, unlike its competitors, its 16" x 8" breakaway flood vent covers 305 square feet, making it the highest-rated flood vent of its size available on the market. And it costs just $99. Competitor products cost more ($259.99) and cover less space (200 square feet).

So, let's do the math. If a crawl space is 2,000 square feet, seven vents from Crawl Space Door Systems would do the job and total about $700. On the flip side, a competitor would need to provide 10 vents, totaling approximately $2,600. That's a big difference. When homeowners choose an ICC-approved flood vent from Crawl Space Door Systems, they're saving about $1,900 and they're getting an insurance reduction to boot.

An ICC-approved flood vent easily installs into most homes' foundation openings. There's some basic hardware and construction adhesive included. Once the frame is installed, the flood vent snaps into a solid or vented breakaway insert and works to reduce any potential structural damage. They are designed to allow the water pressure to equalize inside and outside of the crawl space.

Seattle Sensation Arnaldo! Heads Talented Cast in LIFE IS A CABARET on August 10

FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- Summer is heating up and the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce DC (PACC-DC) is serving up a sizzling show to match with "LIFE IS A CABARET," headlined by Seattle sensation, uber talented Arnaldo! Drag Chanteuse on August 10, 2019 at the State Theatre in Falls Church, Virginia. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and show starts at 8 p.m.

The show is a fundraiser to benefit at-risk children. Tickets available at the box office, or online at State Theatre - http://www.thestatetheatre.com/events/e2151.xml?_offset=16&_order=1 or PACC-DC - https://www.pacc-dc.org/events/2019/8/10/life-is-a-cabaret-featuring-arnaldo-drag-chanteuse

There's singing, dancing, comedy and lots of music under the musical direction of Bob Bruneau and with a supporting cast of local DMV artists: instrumentalist Diwa de Leon, songstress Katrina Manabat, comedian Christian Escoto, dancer Elena Faye, saxophonist Justin Eller, bassist Robert Friedensen, and hosted by Jared Gillett a.k.a. Putting Pinoy.

Why a cabaret? "Cabaret is a fun entertainment style that allows a variety of talents to be showcased while the audience watch in a comfortable setting," says PACC-DC president, Cristina Sison.

"Plus, it has that hint of being something of an underground nature...that tiny bit of naughtiness! But rest assured, it's all wholesome fun. The show has a great mix of talents and promises to be one mega entertainment night!" adds PACC-DC PRO Olma Inocentes.

Featured artist Arnaldo! is no neophyte in the cabaret scene as he has been around for some years.

Here's what some reviews have to say about him:

"Arnaldo is not just another drag act. Arnaldo is 'Just An Old Fashioned Girl' and about as close to an old time night club chanteuse as we're likely to find on today's scene. Armed with an hour's worth of well-chosen songs, fun banter and laid back ease with an audience, this drag is no drag. He's the real deal in a world where prejudices and quick judgements are too often the norm." -- AfterDark Review by John Hoglund.

"Utterly original and unabashedly glamorous, Arnaldo is a sensational and ravishing musical diva!" -- Chay Yew, Director of the Taper's Asian Theatre Workshop and the Resident Director at East West Players in Los Angeles.

"[Arnaldo] is a female impersonator-not quite like the others-extremely tasteful...looks like a young Pat Suzuki sitting atop the piano doing Cole Porter and other sly, witty things!!!" -- Erv Raible, NY cabaret impresario and Artisic Director, Cabaret Conference at Yale University.

About the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce DC (PACC-DC):

PACC-DC recently celebrated its 25 years of service to the community and its vision is to further grow that presence in the DMV area. Founder of Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation to Run 206-Mile Ultra-Marathon on Mount St. Helens Volcano

BURKE, Va. -- Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation announced that its founder and director, "Tattoo Tom" Mitchell is on a mission to raise $500,000 to support children with cancer and their families. From August 9 through 13, he will return to Mount St. Helens to make his fourth attempt at what's been called "the most challenging endurance race in North America" - the Bigfoot 200.

The race is 206.5 miles and he'll be joined by Loren Jewell, a childhood cancer survivor and firefighter who beat the odds after being told upon diagnosis that she might never walk again. Pacing Mitchell and Jewell is Katie Healy, a pediatric oncology nurse who cared for not only Jewell, but also Mitchell's daughter, Shayla, while she was undergoing cancer treatment.

The Bigfoot 200 is Stillbrave's largest fundraising effort of the year and they hope to meet their fundraising goal through sponsorships and direct donations. Each mile is dedicated to a different child impacted by cancer and funds are raised in their honor. Mitchell and Jewell will carry pictures of these children and will acknowledge them at each mile.

After Mitchell's daughter, Shayla, lost her hard-fought battle with childhood cancer in 2009, he founded Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation. He's dedicated his life to helping the families of children battling cancer in any way possible.

Mitchell's ability to console the inconsolable is an invaluable asset within the confines of a hospital room. Humor and compassion, and first-hand knowledge, are almost impossible to quantify and cannot be delivered in a gift card or care package.

"Shayla died in 2009. I'm not running this for my daughter; I'm running it for yours," Mitchell says.

About Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation:

Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides non-medical support to children with cancer and their families. It helps them financially and emotionally, on a case-by-case basis, as they struggle with the toughest battle of their lives. Learn more at: https://www.stillbrave.org/

Energy Jobs Will Be Easier to Find for Virginians After Enactment of HB2008/SB1348

RICHMOND, Va. -- Energy sector jobs will be easier to find following Governor Northam's approval of HB2008 / SB1348 earlier this year. The legislation creates a 17th Energy Career Cluster in the state's education system, says the Virginia Energy Workforce Consortium. An Energy Career Cluster will introduce students to career opportunities in energy and focus their education on the jobs needed to meet the industry's growing workforce needs.

"All forms of energy, traditional and renewable, rely on many of the same skills," said Matt Kellam, chair of the Virginia Energy Workforce Consortium. "While those skills are currently taught in Virginia's schools in other industry clussters, there is little emphasis on how they apply specifically to supplying energy. With this legislation, we will ensure that students are better aware of the opportunities available in meeting our energy needs."

Under the language of the law, the Virginia Department of Education will align education programs with the energy industry competency and credential models developed by the Center for Energy Workforce Development in partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor. This will guarantee that Virginia students' education in an array of fields related to energy will prepare them for energy jobs in the Commonwealth.

"I was proud to serve as the patron for House Bill 2008 during the 2019 session of the General Assembly," said Delegate T. Scott Garrett (R-Lynchburg). "Energy jobs are the backbone of the American economy and we need to make sure all students in the Commonwealth have a pipeline to access this vibrant sector of the 21st century workforce."

Creation of a 17th Energy Career Cluster is supported by a coalition of energy industry companies and business groups including the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Lynchburg Regional Alliance, Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium, Dominion Energy, Washington Gas, Virginia's Electric Cooperatives, and the Virginia Manufacturers' Association.

About the Virginia Energy Workforce Consortium:

Virginia Energy Workforce Consortium (VEWC) was formed in 2007 to engage energy companies and utilities in strategic, unified, and results-oriented efforts to ensure a skilled, qualified, and diverse workforce to meet future industry needs throughout the Commonwealth. VEWC members include representatives from electric, natural gas, renewable energy, and utility companies; contractors; organized labor unions; industry associations; secondary and postsecondary educational institutions; the public workforce system; and local, regional, and state government agencies.
