‘Ancient Black Civilizations Matter’ – Brand New Book, Explores Black Lives in Classical Civilizations and Embraces the Healing Power of History

SHELBURNE, Nova Scotia -- Procopius Canning, historian and creator of the scholarly award-winning web sites Timeline: Ancient Rome, and Gladiator: The Real Story, announces the publication of "ANCIENT BLACK CIVILIZATIONS MATTER: Sort of like Wakanda, only real!" (ISBN: 979-8696570037), a deeply researched popular survey history of Blacks and Black culture in the ancient classical world.

While ancient Black history has been studied extensively in universities by specialized scholars, little about Blacks and Black culture in Classical Civilizations has been communicated to society at large, by way of high schools, Hollywood, or the mainstream media.

"Leaving out an entire race of people from popular history is a rather egregious omission," says Canning, and further "it was disturbing to see some of the miscreants who stormed the Capitol Building appropriating symbols from ancient Roman history as symbols of white power."

Revealing the extent of the role of Blacks in the ancient world would help undermine such hate groups, Canning believes, making the content of his new book especially important. While it is true that few people know much about the daily life of Blacks and Black culture in the ancient world, the truth is, at times, they even ruled it.

Heretofore hidden ancient Black history covers the remarkable life of ancient Rome's first Black senator, Lucius Quietus. It includes the Black emperor Pescennius Niger who, like Black soldiers and Black slaves, braided his hair in rows, revealing that Black culture superseded class distinctions. It portrays the learned Black philosopher king Juba II, who ruled ancient Numidia, and who wedded the daughter of the famous Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, Cleopatra Selene, in a celebrated inter-racial royal marriage, predating Meghan and Harry's, by 2,000 years.

It includes the first African emperor Septimius Severus, who together with the revered African empress Julia Domna, began the Severan Dynasty, the longest rule of the ancient Roman empire by people of color. It includes centuries of sculpture, painting, and artifacts, found deep within the digital art history archives of the world's leading museums, the most appropriate of which, are used in Canning's book. These events, along with the empire shattering Jugurthine Wars, led by the Black warrior king Jugurtha, should lay to rest any notion that ancient history belongs to any one race alone.

"ANCIENT BLACK CIVILIZATIONS MATTER: Sort of like Wakanda, only real," embraces the healing power of history, proving that when accurately described, people of color will not only see themselves reflected in Classical Civilizations, they will see themselves participating actively and meaningfully within them, at all levels. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated that, "all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly... This is the inter-related structure of reality." Ancient history is as compelling a proof of Dr. King's eloquent wisdom as are today's current events, indeed.

Procopius Canning B.A., B.Ed. is a retired educator, author, and creator of two of the most visited ancient Roman history sites on the internet, TIMELINE: Ancient Rome, and Gladiator: The Real Story. These scholarly web sites have won three awards from the Encyclopedia Britannica, have over 2.4 million page views, and have internationally held simultaneously both the 3rd and 4th place search result positions for ancient Roman history on Baidu, the most popular search engine in China. "ANCIENT BLACK CIVILIZATIONS MATTER: Sort of like Wakanda, only real!" is his fourth book.

Launch Pad Publishing Releases Self-Care Book For Parents with High Needs Children

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Launch Pad Publishing is releasing the first book in a new self-care series and it's the answer to caring for a child with high needs in our "sacrificial mom" culture. The author's own experience parenting a daughter with Turner Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that can cause many health issues, inspired the book's insightful, relatable advice.

"Everyday Self-Care and Your High Needs Child" follows author Natalie Brobin's journey from confused young mother of a newborn with a heart condition to busy Turner Syndrome advocate trying to balance three kids, medical issues and her own life. The stress, coupled with the suicide of her best friend, eventually led Brobin to have a nervous breakdown, which started her on the path to recovery, discovery and everyday self-care.

Brobin's book is broken into small parts, each chapter focusing on a basic self-care principle and designed to be read in about 20 minutes. Brobin, who is a certified yoga instructor, walks readers through self-care staples like breathwork and meditation and also provides practical tips about movement, sleep, nutrition and getting professional help. In addition, the book features advice from other parents and medical professionals.

Pediatric Cardiology expert Dr. Michael Silberbach praises "Everyday Self-Care" as a "wonderful book that will be an asset to any family with a high-needs child who has medical, mental health or other stressful issues."

"I'll admit that upon original conception, I wasn't sure how Natalie's story would translate into a self-improvement book," says publisher Anna David. "Her unique experiences have given her an interesting perspective on life, so I thought she would write a memoir. I'm very pleased her narrative has evolved into such a useful first book - it's like a life coach in your back pocket."

Parenting typical children is already a challenge but when a child has a mental or physical health issues or disability, parents may find themselves putting their child's health above everything in their lives. Although it is seldom discussed, the idea of prioritizing self-care for parents is essential. "Everyday Self-Care" is here to start that discussion.

"Everyday Self-Care and Your High-Needs Child" is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, among many other outlets.

Cirsova Publishing to Reprint Nearly-Lost Julian Hawthorne Planetary Romance, ‘The Cosmic Courtship’

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Cirsova Publishing is proud to announce that it has partnered with Michael Tierney and Robert Allen Lupton to restore and reprint Julian Hawthorne's "The Cosmic Courtship" ( ), a never-before-collected pulp Planetary Romance by the son of famed American author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Mary Faust, a brilliant scientist, has developed a machine that can allow the conscious human soul to explore the cosmos! Her promising young assistant Miriam Mayne has accidentally transferred her consciousness to Saturn, where she falls under the enchantment of an evil sorcerer! Jack Paladin, her love, sets out after her on a thrilling celestial journey to the ringed planet! Swashbuckling adventure and high romance await in Julian Hawthorne's "The Cosmic Courtship!"

While most are at least somewhat familiar with Nathaniel Hawthorne as one of the great American authors, less well known is that his son Julian was an incredibly prolific writer in his own right. Julian wrote on a wide variety of subjects, ranging from literary analysis of his father's works to poetry to period romances and adventures. Late in his career, Julian even dabbled in the emerging genre of Science Fiction.

"The Cosmic Courtship" was serialized in Frank A. Munsey's All-Story Weekly across four issues, beginning with the November 24, 1917 issue and running through the December 15, 1917 issue. While this story has been in the public domain for some time, it has never been collected or published elsewhere until now.

Cirsova Publishing has taken on this exciting project with the aim to preserve this story for posterity and ensure that it is not lost to future generations.

Michael Tierney ( ) is a pulp historian and archivist who has written extensively on Edgar Rice Burroughs, having created the massive four volume "Edgar Rice Burroughs 100 Year Art Chronology," and is currently working on another Art Chronology about Robert E. Howard. He has been involved in the comic book industry for 40 years, owning two of the oldest comic book stores in Central Arkansas until switching to mail-order only in 2020. He is also an accomplished science fiction writer and artist, having worked on his Wild Stars saga since the 1970s. Michael not only made his pulp library available for this project, he provided the photographic images of these rare magazines so that a manuscript could be produced. He has also lent his years of experience digitally restoring damaged pulp art to restore the original cover by Fred W. Small to create a unique cover for this edition.

Robert Allen Lupton ( ) is a prolific author, pulp historian, and commercial hot air balloon pilot. He has published nearly 200 short stories across numerous anthologies, including the New York Times Best Selling Chicken Soup For the Soul series, and has published several anthologies and novels. His most recent novel, "Dejanna of the Double Star" was published in December 2020. Robert has been an active Edgar Rice Burroughs historian, researcher, and writer since the 1970s, including at ERBzine ( ), where several of his articles and stories are published. Robert has painstakingly recreated the text as it was originally published from the digital images provided from Michael's collection.

Cirsova Publishing ( ) has been publishing thrilling adventure science fiction and fantasy since 2016. They have published nearly 20 issues of their flagship publication, Cirsova Magazine. Additionally, they have published a number of anthologies, a fully illustrated edition of Leigh Brackett's Planet Stories-era Stark adventures, Jim Breyfogle's Mongoose and Meerkat, and the 35th Anniversary Editions of Michael Tierney's Wild Stars.

This collected edition of The Cosmic Courtship will be released later in 2021.

Kids Read Now sends books to students – engages families: North Carolina students will spend the summer reading free books

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Kids Read Now has partnered with school districts across North Carolina, including Pitt County Schools, to mail books directly to their students' homes over the summer. The number of students in the Kids Read Now program continues to grow with almost 400,000 books being mailed to students in 2020 alone!

Most students will experience reading skill loss over a typical summer break from school. Creating home libraries is key to preventing a steep learning slide due to summer break and recent extended school closures. "Everyone wins when schools enable parents to eradicate learning loss for K-3 students over the summer. Many of those students gain up to 2.5 months of learning during the 12-week summer break," said Leib Lurie, CEO of Kids Read Now.

"It was a great way for my students to receive quality books that they could keep and read! It also helped motivate them throughout the summer to read!" said Amanda J., Classroom Teacher, ECU Community Schools.

The Kids Read Now K-3 summer reading program mails eight new books to students and includes exciting multicultural, fiction, and nonfiction titles loved by children. Mailing books builds ongoing enthusiasm but does not require in-home technology. Each book includes guided discussion questions to help improve reading skills and increase family engagement. The ninth book of beautifully illustrated creative writing prompts concludes the program so children can write their own stories. Best of all, kids keep their new books!

Kids Read Now is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the singular mission to eliminate learning loss for all K-3 students.
