From Princesses to Pop Tarts, Author Peggy Orenstein Dissects Today’s ‘Girly-Girl’ Trend for Dallas Lecture Audience February 1, 2012, Sponsored by Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas

Author: Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas
Dateline: Dallas, Texas (DALLAS, Texas)  | Wed, 04 Jan 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas will hold its third lecture, 'What is a Girly-Girl?,' in its 2011-2012 series on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. in partnership with The Dallas Institute for Humanities and Culture.”

A R T I C L E:

Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas will hold its third lecture, "What is a Girly-Girl?," in its 2011-2012 series on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. in partnership with The Dallas Institute for Humanities and Culture.

Author Peggy Orenstein will discuss today's "girly-girl" culture that influences them from infancy onward: from princesses with pink gowns to spa birthday parties for six-year-olds, to Miley Cyrus to how thirteen-year-olds present themselves on Facebook, it tells a girl that how she looks matters more than who she is.

"We're seeing a 'Kardashianization' of girlhood," says Orenstein, whose examination of the lives of young women began in 1994 with her classic book "Schoolgirls." "It's a worrisome trend for those who want daughters to thrive and become confident, happy women. Formerly neutral toys have become gendered, narrowing a girl's idea about her sexuality, future relationships and academic and professional potential. Girls are being encouraged to embrace this materialistic, image-saturated femininity through an unprecedented amount of marketing targeted at ever-younger ages."

Writer and speaker Peggy Orenstein is author of "Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture" and other books. She is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and many other publications.

This lecture is the third in the series, "What is a Girl?," which takes a critical look at how girls have been envisioned from ancient mythology to today's popular culture and tomorrow's leadership in science and technology.

"We could not have picked a better partner than The Dallas Institute for Humanities and Culture," says Girls Inc. CEO Lori Palmer. "The theme, 'What is a girl?' has proven to be as complex and provocative a subject as it is a captivating one."

As with all the lectures in this series, Orenstein will present and then lead a discussion with audience members after a reception with wine, cheese, fruit and coffee at 6:00 p.m. The lecture takes place on Wednesday, February 1, at 6:30 p.m. at The Dallas Institute for Humanities and Culture located at 2719 Routh Street, Dallas. Admission is $25.

Register online for "What Is a Girly-Girl?" at GirlsIncDallas.org/LectureSeries or by contacting Lisa Rossi at lrossi@girlsincdallas.org or 214.654.4553. Seating is limited to 100. Sponsors include the Dallas Business Journal, WRR Classical 101, Kroger, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts of Dallas and Texas Instruments.

The remaining lecture events are as follows:

Wednesday, April 4, 2012, "What is a STEM Girl? Girls in Science, Engineering, Math and Technology."

The concluding lecture of the series will consider the feminine role in scientific and theoretical fields, most if not all of which have traditionally been associated with men. How did such a tradition develop? In what ways is it changing? And what does the future hold for girls who are drawn to these professions?

New Eco Tourism Company Changes Lives of Locals and Gives Guests a Travel Experience of a Lifetime

Author: Destination Earth, Inc.
Dateline: San Francisco, California (SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.)  | Wed, 04 Jan 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Destination Earth has announced the launch of their unique Voluntourism Travel concept with a tour to Cambodia and Vietnam. This adventure highlights their business model, which offers fun, safe adventure tours to those who would like to travel responsibly and give back while enjoying their vacation.”

A R T I C L E:

Destination Earth has announced the launch of their unique Voluntourism Travel concept with a tour to Cambodia and Vietnam. This adventure highlights their business model, which offers fun, safe adventure tours to those who would like to travel responsibly and give back while enjoying their vacation.

On January 16, twelve travelers are going to Vietnam and Cambodia for an Eco Volunteer trip. Days will be spent both seeing the sites, and donating supplies, teaching English, and staying and eating at facilities that are helping the many people in need. The final two days culminate in a village stay where guests put the finishing touches on a bridge that the group sponsored. This footbridge will allow children to get the education and nourishment from a local nonprofit school that has been inaccessible during monsoon season.

In addition to this project, Destination Earth will be providing a variety of local and international adventure tours into 2012 and beyond. This includes adventures into South America, and shorter Northern California adventure tours as well.

Company president Jud Yaski says, "It's about time that there is an opportunity for individuals to both take an exciting trip and help the planet at the same time."

As well as group tours, Destination Earth will be offering these adventures as both Team Building exercises for companies, and as corporate incentive travel, allowing companies to both provide a benefit to their staff and contribute to their social responsibility goals.

The company's model is to offer intimate adventures with no more than 15 people per trip, allowing the groups to maneuver easily through the varied locals that their trips take them. All trips are designed to not only highlight the "must sees" of an area, but also take guests off the beaten path, to unique environments they would never encounter on their own.

About Destination Earth, Inc.:

The company is the brainchild of Veteran Event producer and world traveler, Jud Yaski. He has partnered with successful adventure travel founder Steve Juba, combining their combined quarter of a century in hospitality to create the ultimate travel experience: Destination Earth.

For more information on the next adventure, or to design a custom adventure with meaning, visit www.destination-earth.org or call 650-533-5487.

Education Behind Bars – A Win-Win Strategy for Maximum Security, by Christopher Zoukis

Author: Christopher Zoukis
Dateline: Petersburg, Virginia (PETERSBURG, Va.)  | Wed, 04 Jan 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Why should the American taxpayer care about people who are incarcerated in our prison system? Simple, it is a true cost-saving measure that should be discussed. In 'EDUCATION BEHIND BARS' (ISBN: 978-1934597774; Sunbury Press) author Christopher Zoukis makes the case for why all Americans should support education in our prison system. A R T I C L E:

Why should the American taxpayer care about people who are incarcerated in our prison system? Simple, it is a true cost-saving measure that should be discussed. In "EDUCATION BEHIND BARS" (ISBN: 978-1934597774; Sunbury Press) author Christopher Zoukis makes the case for why all Americans should support education in our prison system. Most Americans do not realize that the United States could save upwards of $60 billion each year by simply educating prisoners.

According to the Journal of Correctional Education, the U.S. incarcerates over 2.3 million persons, a number equal to 5 percent of the country's population. The U.S. accounts for 25 percent of the entire incarcerated population worldwide. Each of these millions of prisoners costs the American taxpayer between $32,000 to $40,000 each year in food and housing.

Of those 2.3 million prisoners, around 800,000 will be released each year and most, that is a staggering 70 percent to 85 percent will return to prison within five years. The exception is prisoners who receive education in prison.

The same study found that a prisoner with an Associate's degree reduces the rate of recidivism and return to prison to 13.7 percent and those with Bachelor's degree to 5.6 percent. Prisoners who have attained a Master's Degree have a 0 percent chance of returning to prison. The Institute for Higher Education Policy calculates the cost of educating one prisoner to be $2,000 to $3,782 per year which is done mostly via distance learning/online. This additional cost is drastically lower than the $40,000 per year costs in simply incarcerating a person.

"EDUCATION BEHIND BARS" is the ultimate source for why Americans should champion the education of prisoners and provides detailed information on how "EDUCATION BEHIND BARS" can be made easily available to prisoners at a reasonable cost.

One fact that should make all Americans think twice: The United States spends $30.1 billion each year to build more prisons. This is money that could be used in more productive ways that benefit the taxpayer.

Baseball Players Make Healthcare Home Run – Gaining Protection against Rising Long-Term Care Costs

Author: LTC Financial Partners LLC
Dateline: Placentia, California (PLACENTIA, Calif.)  | Wed, 04 Jan 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “Today the Association of Professional Ball Players of America (APBPA) announces the selection of LTC Financial Partners LLC (LTCFP) to offer long-term care education and long-term care insurance coverage to their 11,000 Members. For members that choose to purchase the insurance, applications for individual policies will be completed by LTCFP and underwritten by Transamerica Life Insurance Company.”

A R T I C L E:

Today the Association of Professional Ball Players of America (APBPA) announces the selection of LTC Financial Partners LLC (LTCFP) to offer long-term care education and long-term care insurance coverage to their 11,000 Members. For members that choose to purchase the insurance, applications for individual policies will be completed by LTCFP and underwritten by Transamerica Life Insurance Company.

This development comes on the heels of the Obama Administration's decision to abandon plans to implement the CLASS Act. CLASS, standing for "Community Living Assistance Services and Supports," was the public option for long-term care insurance, the part of health reform championed by the late Ted Kennedy.

Why should healthy, athletic baseball players, of all people, be concerned about future long-term care needs? "They're no different than the general public," says Dick Beverage, The Association Secretary-Treasurer. "Very few plan for their long-term care until it's too late. Years pass and then they may no longer be able to afford insurance."

The cost can be large, according to Cameron Truesdell, LTCFP's CEO. "Let's say a player gets injured or ill and needs long-term care in their home," he says. "According to the MetLife Mature Market Institute, a trained assistant now costs $21 per hour on average. And if the player needs extended care in a nursing home, the annual cost is $83,500 for a private room." Protecting a retirement plan against such a hit is "good business for all professionals including baseball players."

The Association was created in 1924 when twelve former ballplayers met in Los Angeles and determined that there was a need to take care of the less fortunate members of their profession. From these beginnings the Association has provided financial assistance for those professional baseball players, coaches, umpires, scouts, clubhouse men and other members of the baseball family who are in need. No distinction is made between the major leagues and the minor leagues. Participation in what is a unique fraternity is the defining factor.

Major League Baseball and the National Association of the Minor Leagues have both endorsed APBPA as their benevolent organization. Many of the greatest names in baseball have served on The Association's Board: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Casey Stengel and Sparky Anderson. Current Board members include Roland Hemond, Mike Scioscia, Tony LaRussa and Tom Lasorda.

The Association does not publicize its benevolent efforts. This is by design, to protect the dignity and anonymity of their members. All cases where financial assistance is requested are evaluated and investigated with great discretion.

Says Roland Hemond, the Association President, "We've helped over three thousand ballplayers, some in the Hall of Fame and others who enjoyed only a brief career." Total financial assistance has been in the millions, including helping with long-term care costs, but benevolent help has its limits. With the new program announced today, "many members will see the benefit of purchasing long-term care insurance, for themselves and family, when they're healthy and it is most affordable," says Hemond. "This will allow the Association to concentrate its benevolent help on older, retired players, those who have been ravaged by illness and the infirmities of old age."

Additional information may be requested from Dick Beverage, Secretary-Treasurer, at 714-528-2012 or http://www.APBPA.org .

LTCFP is a co-founder and sponsor of the "3 in 4 Need More" campaign, which seeks to alert Americans to the long-term healthcare crisis, and to multiply the number protected by long-term care planning. More information is available at http://www.ltcfp.com .

Author: Insight Research Corporation
Dateline: Mountain Lakes, New Jersey (MOUNTAIN LAKES, N.J.)  | Tue, 03 Jan 2012

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “The global telecommunications industry continues to expand as spending by consumers and businesses for wireless services fuels industry revenue growth, says a new market analysis report from The Insight Research Corporation. According to the new industry market study, telecommunications services revenue on a worldwide basis will grow from $2.1 trillion in 2012 to $2.7 trillion in 2017 at a combined average growth rate of 5.3 percent.”

A R T I C L E:

The global telecommunications industry continues to expand as spending by consumers and businesses for wireless services fuels industry revenue growth, says a new market analysis report from The Insight Research Corporation. According to the new industry market study, telecommunications services revenue on a worldwide basis will grow from $2.1 trillion in 2012 to $2.7 trillion in 2017 at a combined average growth rate of 5.3 percent.

"The 2012 Telecommunications Industry Review: An Anthology of Market Facts and Forecasts" notes that wireless subscriber growth, particularly in Asia and other emerging markets, will raise wireless revenues by 64 percent from current levels, while wireline revenues show only modest growth.

Nearly all of the growth in both sectors is expected to occur in broadband services, with wireless 3G and 4G broadband services projected to grow at a compounded rate of 24 percent over the forecast period and wireline broadband services projected to grow at a 13 percent compounded rate over the same forecast horizon.

"Despite global economic uncertainty, the telecommunications industry is showing strong revenue growth, which is being driven by consumer Internet usage and business mobility solutions. These are enabling new applications," says Fran Caulfield, Research Director for Insight Research.

"Even amidst so much economic uncertainty, the fact remains that telecommunications is a key factor in economic growth. Telecommunications facilitates socio-economic advancement and is a critical utility for economic development, much like water and energy," Caulfield concluded.

In addition to regional and sector forecasts, the report provides an assessment of the key drivers of this growth, including industry trends, network infrastructure and access technologies, telecom services, and enterprise telecom markets. A R T I C L E:

According to Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas, on December 28, 2011, President Obama issued a proclamation designating January 2012 as National Mentoring Month. He stated: "Every day, mentors help young Americans face the challenges of growing into adulthood. By setting a positive example and sharing their time, knowledge, and experience, mentors play an essential role in preparing our Nation's youth for a bright future." Themed "Invest in the Future: Mentor a Child," January 2012 marks the eleventh annual National Mentoring Month, a time each year when the President spotlights the importance of mentors and the need for every child to have the guidance of a caring adult.

Without positive role models, teen girls often face a "crisis of confidence" and are especially vulnerable to risky behavior and making bad choices with devastating lifelong consequences. With this in mind and focused on empowering all girls and young women, ages six to 18, Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas is launching a new mentoring program that helps adult women connect with girls and provide them with ongoing support and encouragement.

"There are no special skills required to take advantage of the opportunity to mentor, only the willingness to help," said Leanne Hall, Volunteer Resource Director at Girls Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas. "Mentors must pass a background check, be at least 21 years old and be dependable and consistent meeting time commitments of five hours per month. Selected women are carefully screened and then matched with our girls. The mentors will have the opportunity to encourage and support young girls through helping with homework, test preparation and providing guidance and friendship."

Mentor training kicks off on January 17, 2012. To participate in the program, or to learn more about this or other volunteer opportunities, please contact Leanne Hall at 214-654-4506 or lhall@girlsincdallas.org .

A R T I C L E:

PowerGuard Specialty Insurance Services announces that Chinese solar manufacturer, ZNShine, has joined the growing number of international solar panel manufacturers adopting PowerGuard's unique PowerClip extended warranty protection.

ZNShine Solar is a vertically integrated producer of solar photovoltaic modules. Controlling the value chain from raw silicon to solar photovoltaic systems, the company has a strong position in the global renewable energy market. This integrated business model gives ZNShine a unique opportunity to generate solar electrical power at a highly competitive price.

In 2011, ZNShine's production reached annual capacity of 500 MW. They accomplished this using highly automated production lines equipped with machines supplied by leading European companies. This process ensures very narrow processing parameters, resulting in stable and solid product quality, which has consistently received a top rating from PHOTON Field Measurement. ZNShine pays constant attention to product quality and their modules have been certified by UL, TUV, Rheinland, TUV SUD and BABT.

ZNShine products are further supported by both Zurich Insurance and now by PowerGuard.

A specialty renewable energy program manager based in the U.S., PowerGuard provides an innovative 25-year, non-cancellable quality and performance guarantee solution to back-up a manufacturer's own warranty terms.

The PowerGuard insurance solution, available globally, provides certainty and security to the solar manufacturer's end customers. Its warranty terms are non-cancellable and will survive even insolvency and bankruptcy. Third-party rights to the policy in case the original solar manufacturer goes out of business are also offered, backed by the capital strength of the insurance market.

Mike McMullen, Managing Principal of PowerGuard, said: "PowerGuard is proud that our unique and innovative PowerClip risk-transfer product is increasingly being adopted by leading solar module manufacturers around the world. PowerGuard will continue to support the development and success of the global renewable energy industry with unique, industry-leading products and services."

Poly and mono crystalline photovoltaic modules manufactured by ZNShine Solar have been successfully used in various medium and large-scale projects located in Germany, Spain and Italy. With these references, the company is now recognized and supported by both U.S. and European banks for both medium and large-scale investments in solar photovoltaic parks.

Guaranteeing warranty terms through the use of insurance provides the certainty manufacturers and their customers seek, as well as long-term stability for the industry.
