SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Nov. 5 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- If you have never heard of "Natural Harvest," the only semen-based cookbook currently on the market, you are not alone. Despite international media attention, "Natural Harvest" (ISBN: 9781424314614) has managed to stay under the mainstream radar - but just barely. That may be about to change with a nomination for the Gourmand World Cookbook Award, a prestigious international recognition of exceptional and groundbreaking culinary literature.

What started as a dinner party discussion among friends was eventually transformed into a glossy full color cookbook; one that has become one of the most popular items available from internet publisher Lulu.com at over 2 million unique visitors since its release. With over 1,500 books sold, copies of "Natural Harvest" have made their way across the world, from Italian translators to a women's book club in Singapore; even to Saudi Arabia, where a copy was shipped incognito directly from the author to evade government censors. The book has been particularly popular in Canada and France where journalists and independent media have tracked its success with fascination.

Independent and user-driven media has had a field day with "Natural Harvest." Photenhauer himself has given over 20 radio and news interviews with bloggers and journalists around the world. Comments on blogs and media sites run the gamut from humor to disgust to genuine appreciation. Often they are intertwined with thoughtful debates about the importance of free speech and the need for tolerance in modern and diverse societies. That the internet has made this discussion international has only emphasized the significance of the argument: an emphasis that will be on display at next year's Paris Cookbook fair, where the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards are presented, with their focus on international rights.

The popularity of the cookbook has surprised many people, including its author, Paul Photenhauer, a longtime resident of San Francisco, California and self proclaimed "foodie."

"I have received countless emails from people who thought they were alone in cooking with semen, but were relieved and happy to discover not only a cookbook, but a growing community of culinary enthusiasts," Photenhauer explains. A third edition is already in the works, with new and improved recipes submitted by fans of the cookbook.

eDemocracy 2.0 Comes to Canada – ElectionMall CEO Discusses How Technology is Changing Politics Worldwide

TORONTO, Canada, Nov. 4 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Ravi Singh, CEO and founder of ElectionMall Technologies, is scheduled to speak at the 10th annual Art and Science of Public Affairs conference, sponsored by the Public Affairs Association of Canada. ElectionMall Technologies is a campaign technology company that is dedicated to helping campaigns of all sizes utilize technology and reach voters since 2000. Singh is recognized as the "Campaign Guru," a global expert on campaign technology.

Singh will be speaking on U.S. politics Thursday morning, focusing on the political sphere after Obama's campaign, and if these changes can be applied to Canada's political climate. Currently over 83 percent of the population of Canada is using the internet, according to International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

"Social networking sites are the new town halls," stresses Ravi Singh. "Canadian Politicians need to start using these resources to engage voters with their representatives."

Currently, several social networking outlets exist for politicians in Canada, but few are taking advantage of them. Twitter has less than 100 Canadian politicians using the site, whereas the United States has an entire separate Twitter location for all the members of Congress. MySpace has created an "Impact Canada" site that allows political parties to answer voters' questions, but currently only the Liberal Party has joined the site. Additionally, only two prominent Canadian politicians had used MySpace to reach voters as of 2008.

Ravi Singh plans on explaining why Obama's use of the Internet, notably social networking tools such as Facebook and MyBarackObama, had such an impact on the election results. Mr. Singh hopes to empower the Canadian politicians, helping them better utilize existing tools to reach constituents.

"I hope this information will be a catalyst to the Canadian population and help them reach a new level of democracy within their political system," states Singh.

The 10th annual Art and Science of Public Affairs conference will be occurring November 4-5 at the Toronto Board of Trade. For information on attending Mr. Singh's speech, please contact Bernie Morton at Bmmorton@sussex-strategy.com or directly at 416-644-4756. To set up a phone interview with Ravi Singh, please contact Liz at 202-468-5955 for scheduling.

Foreclosure Prices Were Up, While Real Estate Prices Were Down

A R T I C L E:

NEW YORK, N.Y., Nov. 4 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Reports from the first days of November show that the housing market is still on shaky ground. According to the statistics from ForeclosureDataOnline.com, real estate prices on the whole are down already for the first three days of November as compared with October's average. The foreclosure market appears strong however. It grew over this same period and shows the kind of steady growth that is apt to continue.

The biggest increase in foreclosure sale prices was in Arizona where the average foreclosure sale price is up 15.51 percent for the first three days of November at $285,257 compared with $246,944 for all of October.

Other states saw more modest increases including: California, which had a 1.83 percent increase from $356,608 to $363,133; Nevada, which had a 1.45 percent increase from $306,505 to $310,943; Texas, which had a 1.27 percent increase from $132,443 to $134,125; and Florida, which had a 1.05 percent increase from $228,602 to $230,995.

Also important to note is the ForeclosureDataonline statistics that show that foreclosure prices were only down in three states when comparing the early November average to the October average. Maine saw a -1.88 percent change in average foreclosure sale price from $116,742 to $114,547.

West Virginia saw a smaller -0.72 percent change from $108,801 to $108,022 from October to November. Finally, Washington State saw a -0.6 percent change from 284,742 to $283,037 by the beginning of November.

The overall increase in foreclosure sale prices nationwide can be attributed to a certain degree to the smaller number of houses in that market as the rate of foreclosure slows. Foreclosure sales also appear to be an excellent investment as prices are still below fair market value and a climbing every month.

The real estate markets are still quite volatile, so it is important to keep up with the current numbers in order to track the trends. You can find the latest statistics at www.ForeclosureDataonline.com .

For Outstanding Performance in a Caring Role at Home.

SUNRISE, Fla., Nov. 4 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- In honor of the nation's home care professionals and volunteers, Interim HealthCare will join home care providers throughout the United States in kicking off the November celebration of National Home Care Month.

Bokashicycle Announces First Successful Full-Scale Commercial Fermentation Process

Author: Bokashicycle, LLC
Dateline: Wed, 04 Nov 2009

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “SEATTLE, Wash. (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- In the U.S. alone, annually, more than 30 million tons of food waste is sent to landfills. Less than three percent of that waste is diverted from landfills, primarily through composting, producing greenhouse gases and heat. Bokashicycle offers a safer and more economic alternative. By implementing the bokashicycle, commercial operations can divert tons of waste away from landfills and compost sites, converting that waste into high-quality fertilizer.”

A R T I C L E:

SEATTLE, Wash., Nov. 4 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- In the U.S. alone, annually, more than 30 million tons of food waste is sent to landfills. Less than three percent of that waste is diverted from landfills, primarily through composting, producing greenhouse gases and heat. Bokashicycle offers a safer and more economic alternative.

"We first introduced our fermentation process on a residential scale, and it was so successful, we took it to the commercial level," says Dr. Lawrence Green, M.D., Ph.D. and founder of Bokashicycle. "We now offer sustainable solutions to farms, coops and food service operations."

By implementing the bokashicycle, commercial operations can divert tons of waste away from landfills and compost sites, converting that waste into high-quality fertilizer.

Bokashicycle completed its first full commercial fermentation process on New Earth Farm in Hillsboro, Ore. The farm accepts food waste from several cafeterias managed by Bon Appetit on the Intel campus.

New Earth Farm is also intimately associated with a growing operation, Abundant Harvest, which manages a CSA (consumer-supported agriculture) store.

"These CSAs are common across the U.S. People contract with farmers to provide them with fresh produce, fruits and vegetables that are organically-grown and typically boxed so they can pick up a fresh and healthy supply of food each month," Green says. "And, adding a Bokashicycle step completes the circle of sustainability."

So, how does it work? The farm collects organic waste from area restaurants. That food waste is sprinkled with Bokashi culture mix and stays in a barrel for seven to 10 days. The contents (nutrients) are then poured into the farm's soil and covered with dirt for 14 days.

Subsequently, that soil is used for Abundant Harvest crops. No pesticides or growth hormones are ever necessary making it ideal for organic-certified farms.

"We also shred that waste to eliminate items like pineapple tops and large bones since they take longer to process in the soil," Green adds. "New Earth Farm will sell its enriched soil to neighboring farms and the general public."

Bokashicycle provides steep culture mix discounts to New Earth Farm; the average cost per ton of food waste processing is approximately $33.00 which translates into huge savings for local restaurants and cafeterias. They have now diverted that organic waste back to the farm at a cost way below the area's "standard" garbage disposal programs.

For commercial/industrial use, Bokashi culture mix is available in 25 pound bags accompanied by 55-gallon barrels with lids specially configured to be anaerobic (no oxygen).

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Nov. 3 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Some 100 barbershops throughout Los Angeles and the Inland Empire will be bustling with extra activity this Saturday, November 7, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. when Dr. Bill J. Releford, D.P.M., founder of The Diabetic Amputation Prevention (DAP) Foundation, launches the Los Angeles Initiative of the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program (BBHOP).

The BBHOP, sponsored by a grant from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, will offer free diabetes and high blood pressure screenings to African American men who normally visit their local barbers just anticipating the usual haircut. In addition, participants will be provided education about healthy lifestyle alternatives along with PAD screenings and PEP Talk: the Prostate Education Project will address the issue of prostate cancer by distributing culturally appropriate educational materials as well.

In an effort to drive the need for health care and education celebrity support has been enlisted. Sherri Shepherd, co-host of "The View," recorded a public service announcement on KJLH Radio, a station owned by Stevie Wonder. Celebrity participants The Whispers, comedians Kim Coles and Tommy Davidson, actor T.C. Carson, and performers Yo Yo and Montell Jordan are just a sampling of the confirmed talent to visit some of the local shops on Saturday. Former Los Angeles Laker, Norm Nixon, named national spokesperson for the BBHOP, will be on hand.

Ultimately, the BBHO's goal is to screen more than 500,000 African American men by 2012. This unique and innovative grassroots program works with black-owned barbershops, which represent a cultural institution of familiarity and trust in many communities as an effective avenue to disseminate health education information. The program has already tested close to 10,000 African American men in 23 cities including New Orleans, Chicago, Atlanta and Harlem.

Compared to the general public, African American males have a higher risk of diabetes and other cardiovascular conditions, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The American Diabetes Association estimates that 3.7 million African Americans, ages 20 years or older, have diabetes, while statistics show that 40 percent of African American men die prematurely from cardiovascular disease as compared to 21 percent of white men.

The BBHOP, in partnership with Charles Drew University, U.C.L.A., Vasamed and Entrahealthsystems, will offer free screenings throughout Los Angeles including the following locations:

- The New Millennium BS, 4310 Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles
- In The Cut, 220 East Regent St., Inglewood
- Next Cuts Beauty & Barber, 5712 West Pico, L.A.
- Legends Barbershop, 5366 Wilshire Blvd., L.A.
- Inglewood's Finest, 122 S. Market St., Inglewood.

The BBHOP, in partnerships with Kaiser Permanente African American Professional Organization and the Healthy Heritage Movement, Inc., will offer screenings throughout the Inland Empire at:

- Da Mood Barbership, 205 E. Mission Blvd., Pomona
- Good Time Barbershop, 924 E. Holt Ave, Pomona
- N u Flava, Pomona
- Hat's Off, 21065 Bear Valley Road, Apple Valley
- Second To None, 12384 Palmdale Road, #103, Victorville
- Signature Barbershop, 12555 Mariposa Road, Ste. F, Victorville
- T's Barbershop, 15028 7th St. Ste. 2, Victorville
- Who's Next, 21280 Brar Valley Rd., #115, Hesperia.

Founded by Dr. Bill J. Releford, D.P.M. the BBHOP seeks to empower African American men to better understand cardiovascular diseases through education, testing and prevention. The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program has effectively addressed the health concerns of Black men in nearly 200 black owned barbershops since December 2007.

For additional information and to view a list of all the participating barbershop locations, go to www.BlackBarbershop.org.

About Dr. Bill Releford:
Dr. Bill Releford began private practice in 1990 and started the Diabetic Foot Institute, a facility dedicated exclusively to the reduction of diabetes-related amputations in high-risk populations. Most patients were oblivious to the standard of care that should be expected during the occurrence of a diabetic foot complication or the unfortunate recommendation for lower-extremity amputation.

About the Diabetic Amputation Prevention (DAP) Foundation:
The DAP Foundation's mission is to help decrease the diabetes-related amputation rate among high risk populations around the world and address the escalating number of individuals with undetected cardiovascular disease. A R T I C L E:

NEW ORLEANS, La., Nov. 2 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- PJ's Coffee of New Orleans (www.pjscoffee.com), established 31 years ago and returned to local New Orleans ownership 16 months ago, is announcing significant expansion. Scott, Steve and Paul Ballard along with Thomas Richards, Brett Pearson, and Mark Higdon acquired the corporate operations of PJ's Coffee in June 2008 from Atlanta-based Raving Brands. At that time, there were 44 corporate and franchised stores. Today there are 63 locations with 12 more scheduled to open over the next 6 months. The new stores are a combination of franchisee-owned and corporate operations.

PJ's CEO Scott Ballard says the company is focused on more than just the number of coffee shops they can count. "While we continue to expand across the country, we are committed to remaining a New Orleans company," says Ballard. "When we acquired the business last year, corporate operations consisted of fewer than 10 employees. Today we have a growing corporate staff of 28 focusing on roasting, franchising, quality control, and retail products. Together we are building and expanding the PJ's Coffee brand," adds Ballard.

PJ's Coffee notes that it is now experiencing steady revenue increases following a period of eight to 10 months when revenues were flat. While so many other industries are experiencing difficulties, the coffee business seems to be holding its own. The company has finalized nearly 20 franchise agreements in the past 18 months, another sign that entrepreneurs believe in the PJ's brand.

"We work closely with potential and new franchisees to determine viability of the business model and involvement of the owner. Then we provide in-depth training on all aspects of running a PJ's Coffee business from operating the equipment to following our award-winning recipes, to securing and maintaining adequate financial investment and planning," says Ballard.

Furthering their commitment to building the brand, the owners of PJ's Coffee have negotiated a two-year partnership with the New Orleans Saints which includes PJ's designation as "the Preferred Coffee of the New Orleans Saints." PJ's also secured the rights to brand two of the Superdome's outside air handling units to mimic giant coffee cups, complete with steam rising out of them. The New Orleans Saints and PJ's Coffee are also working on developing a line of co-branded retail coffees that will be released this November to take advantage of the holiday sales season.

Retail Products:
In addition to growing its franchise operations, PJ's Coffee of New Orleans is expanding its retail business. The company is currently finalizing plans for a ready to drink beverage and already offers its own PJ's branded bottled spring water. "We have increased our retail and food offerings within our stores and we are developing other products which should be available soon," states Ballard.

PJ's Coffee offers coffee service to offices, restaurants, hospitals and other industries through its subsidiary, New Orleans Roast. The company has expanded this business segment to more than double what it was a year ago. PJ's Coffee and New Orleans Roast can provide a number of products to its customers such as coffee service, hotel in-room coffee pods, and iced tea brewing products. The company is working on distribution channels to expand coffee service beyond its current service area.

New Orleans Roast gourmet coffees are now available in grocery stores including: Medium Roast, Dark Roast, Coffee & Chickory, and Decaf. 16 oz. (1 lb.) bags of New Orleans Roast are currently available for only $4.99. These coffees are all roasted in the company's French Quarter facility in the small-batch tradition of the company.

Private Label Roasting:
New Orleans Roast creates private label coffees for customers such as hotels and restaurants that are only available to that client. One recent private label customer is the new Roosevelt Hotel in downtown New Orleans (part of the Waldorf Astoria Collection). PJ's Coffee Master Roaster, Felton Jones, explains the process. "Initially we bring company representatives to the roasting facility for a tasting," says Jones. "There we can outline the roasting process and develop a distinct coffee." Jones says that the secret to maintaining quality is all in the method of roasting its beans in small batches. "That's the way it was done 31 years ago, and we plan to continue that tradition."

New Orleans' Favorite Coffee:
PJ's Coffee continues to be the favored cup of coffee in New Orleans, receiving readers' choice awards from New Orleans Magazine (selected reader's favorite cup of coffee six years and running), Gambit New Orleans, and Where Y'at Magazine. Look for our newest flavored coffee drink, S'Mores, available starting November 14th in all locations. It's a deliciously flavored roast, with a delectable combination of Ghirardelli chocolate, toasted marshmallows, graham cracker crumbs and whipped cream.

PJ's Coffee of New Orleans uses hand-selected, premium Arabica beans which are slow-roasted in small batches at its New Orleans roasting facility. PJ's Coffee was established in 1978 and began franchising in 1995. Today there are 63 PJ's locations in seven states.
