Documentary on Plight of Ground Fishermen to be Screened in Maine Towns

KITTERY, Maine -- aine residents will have an opportunity soon to witness the devastating impacts of federal regulations on the lives of New England ground fishermen, as seen through the eyes of a documentary filmmaker with a long record of acclaimed work. David Wittkower's "Dead in the Water" will be shown at four Maine community theaters in April.

It will be shown at Kittery, Star Theater, Waterville's Railroad Square, Boothbay Harbor's The Harbor Theater and Belfast's The Colonial Theater. The 7 p.m. screenings will be followed by a question period and panel discussion featuring local, New England commercial fishermen and the film makers.

Dates and Times (Schedule):
* Kittery Community Center - 04/06/18 - 120 Rogers Road, Kittery, ME 03904.
* Railroad Square Theater - 04/08/18 - 17 Railroad Square, Waterville, ME 04901.
* Harbor Theater - 04/09/18 - 185 Townsend Ave, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.
* The Colonial Theater - 04/10/18 - 163 High Street, Belfast, ME 04915.

* At each screening, a Q&A will follow immediately after the film, with the filmmaker and fishermen.

The film was shot in New England coastal towns. It features scenes and interviews with area fishermen, their spouses and other family members, advocates for fishermen, elected officials, and community activists.

"This film opens the doors for the world to see how difficult and dangerous the life of a fisherman is," said John Bell, a former mayor of Gloucester, Massachusetts who advised Wittkower during the project. "On top of that, the impact of misguided federal regulations on fishermen has never been presented as powerfully as it is in 'Dead in the Water.' This film packs a real punch. It stays with you long after you've seen it."

On March 18, 2018, "Dead in the Water" received an award for Excellence in Cinematography for a Documentary at the Depth of Field International Film Festival competition. The film also features Grammy Award winning singer, Paula Cole.

Wittkower said he's hoping now that the film will show the audience what is really happening in this very complicated issue. "What we would like to see out of all this is to have people support commercial fishermen. I'd like to see people demand more fish is caught off of U.S. waters than to get it from Vietnam, Norway and New Zealand, and don't eat Tilapia."

Tickets to the April screenings are available by contacting the theaters or at their doors.

Premiere Set for ‘Dead in the Water,’ a Film on the ‘Relentless Destruction’ of Ground Fishing Industry

ROCKPORT, Mass. -- A documentary film dealing with the devastating impacts of federal regulations on the lives of New England ground fishermen, "Dead in the Water," produced and directed by Rockport native and professional filmmaker David Wittkower, will be screened for the first time in public in Rockport, Massachusetts on Nov. 18.

"Dead in the Water" was two-and-a-half years in the making and is Wittkower's fifteenth documentary film.

The film was shot in different coastal towns and it features scenes and interviews with area fishermen, their spouses and other family members; advocates for fishermen; elected officials; and community activists.

"This film opens the doors for the world to see how difficult and dangerous the life of a fisherman is," said John Bell, a former three-term mayor of Gloucester (2002-08). "On top of that, the impact of misguided federal regulations on fishermen has never been presented as powerfully as it is in 'Dead in the Water.' This film packs a real punch. It stays with you long after you've seen it."

Wittkower, a graduate of the American Film Institute as a cinematographer, who's been living and working in Los Angeles since 1981, describes "Dead in the Water" as an examination of "the relentless destruction of the New England ground fishing industry through government regulations, bad science, and the growing, but mistaken, belief that everything has been overfished and there aren't any fish left in the oceans."

The idea for the film came from a casual conversation he had on a sidewalk in Gloucester three years ago. "I was back in Rockport on a visit and I drove into Gloucester and noticed there were very few fishing boats in the harbor," Wittkower said. "I asked someone, 'Where's the fleet?' and he said, 'What fleet? The fleet's been dwindling for years, and this is what's left.'"

He started asking more questions about the plight of the town's fishermen and was soon directed to Angela Sanfilippo, the longtime president of the Gloucester Fishermen's Wives Association. Sanfilippo encouraged him when he raised the possibility of telling the story of the vanishing fleet of ground fishing boats and their crews on film.

"I could see that David was sincerely interested in this topic," said Sanfilippo, "and I quickly figured out he had the skills and track record to make a serious documentary on it, a film that could generate a lot of interest, here and elsewhere."

The Gloucester Fishermen's Wives Association decided to help and support Wittkower as much as possible. "The first time I saw the rough cut of 'Dead in the Water,' I knew we had done the right thing," said Sanfilippo. "This is something special."

One of the many friends and professional colleagues of Sanfilippo who appears in "Dead in the Water" is J.J. Bartlett, President of Fishing Partnership Support Services. He notes that physicians who have studied the physical and emotional effects upon ground fishermen of the changes in the industry "have concluded that 87 percent of them are suffering from symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)."

Bartlett said, "When you watch 'Dead in the Water,' you'll understand why that's so. And you'll leave the theater wanting to tell your friends, 'You have to see this film.'"

The film also includes the song, "Gloucester Harbor Shore" by Grammy(R) Award winner, Paula Cole.

Following the premiere in Rockport on Nov. 18, Wittkower is planning a tour where he will show the film in multiple locations and to a variety of audiences. That tour will begin in Massachusetts, with subsequent showings likely in Boston and New Bedford, and will extend to Maine and other coastal states. Simultaneously, he will be trying for a nationwide showing by getting the film on HBO, Netflix or Amazon.

"Dead in the Water" is Wittkower's fifteenth documentary film. He has won many awards for his work, including one from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum for a film he did on Lane Frost, a famous rodeo bull rider who was accidentally killed at a riding event. He's hoping now that "something better than an award" will come from his latest project.

Said Wittkower, "I'm hoping to increase public support for U.S. fishermen. I want to help keep fishing jobs in this country. If 'Dead in the Water' can do that, I'd be pretty happy."

The film was recently accepted as Official Selections into the Depth of Field International Film Festival competition under three categories: Documentary, Direction and Cinematography.

‘FUEL’ Opening at North Light Yacht Club

DESTIN, Fla. -- FUEL at North Light, a new restaurant providing coastal fare with island flare by North West Floridian tastemaker and chef, Dan Pettis, will open at North Light Yacht Club at 113 E John Sims Parkway. The 100 seat, casual, fine dining destination will provide locally sourced food in a relaxed yet upscale atmosphere with expansive, breathtaking, waterfront views.

Pettis will lead his kitchen's seasonally driven menu with natural flavors of the freshest ingredients to create tapas style small plates and daily specialties with a twist, such as Sesame Crusted Tuna Yakitori, Lump Crab Meat Fritters with Peach and Jalapeño Dipping Sauce, Baja Fish Tacos, Kung Pao Crisp Shrimp, Loaded Lobster Mac & Cheese along with a selection of farm-fresh garden greens and decadent, hand-made desserts. FUEL will also feature a full service bar providing hand-crafted cocktails and Chef Dan's local craft beer on draft from his 3rd Planet Brewing Company. New World fine wines and Old World classics will also be available by the glass and bottle.

Pettis' southern roots and the landscape of Northwest Florida continually inspire his approach to food and restaurant concept design and lend special significance to his latest venture.

"Food and drink is fuel for the mind, body and soul. The Bayou landscape balances those attributes with the great equalizer - water - a key ingredient in life, cooking and our Floridian culture. With its expansive views and position in the recreational community, North Light Yacht Club provides the perfect backdrop to highlight all those attributes and bring the culinary vision to life with a modern twist," says Pettis.

This is the third Gulf Coast venture for Pettis who honed his skills under the tutelage of Chef Tim Creehan. As the Chef/Founder of One 20 Bistro and Spork Eatery, Pettis has earned attention and accolades for his unique fusion of Asian and Caribbean flavors. His southern inspired cooking and passion for simple fare with international flare caught the attention of North Light Yacht Club leadership several years ago, ultimately inspiring a completely new vision for club dining.

"With a background in culinary arts and restaurant design, I immediately recognized something special about Chef Pettis' talent and approach to food craft, which is refreshingly simple yet unpredictably delicious. When I relocated from St. Louis, I learned that we shared the same ideas about culinary artistry, local sourcing and impeccable service," says North Light Director of Development, Jeff Orbin. "I knew that Chef Pettis could help elevate the dining experience we extend to our members and guests. Recently, the timing proved right for both parties to kick-off an exciting, new collaboration."

The new space, currently in development, will open in four to six weeks. It will feature a mix of new materials and marine salvage finds to create an upscale but family-friendly space with a modern, nautical vibe replete with casual touches, like chalkboards announcing daily specials and the unique natural ambience of a moonlit harbor.

Versatile seating and enhanced service will make FUEL ideal for lunch with a colleague, dining with friends for dinner, or hosting a gathering for a special occasion.

Open 7 days a week, FUEL is located on the southern side of the Marina in the North Light Yacht Clubhouse. The restaurant will be open for Lunch Monday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, dinner hours are Monday through Thursday from 5:00 - 9:00 pm and Friday and Saturday 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Sunday Brunch hours are 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Boat side food and drink service, cooler preparation, and "hook-n-cook" options will also be available.

A soft opening is planned. More details will be unveiled to the media and at http://www.northlightmarina.com as the project progresses in the coming weeks.

freeNewsArticles Story Summary: “If you've always wanted a close-up view of a boat like James Bond's or an exciting ride in a seaplane, cruise over to the Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival on Lake Dora at Wooton Park in Tavares on March 23, 24, and 25, 2012. A R T I C L E:

If you've always wanted a close-up view of a boat like James Bond's or an exciting ride in a seaplane, cruise over to the Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival on Lake Dora at Wooton Park in Tavares on March 23, 24, and 25, 2012. Those are just a couple of the highlights planned for the 25th anniversary of the largest antique and classic boat show on America's East Coast.

"The festival definitely will have multiple facets," said Terry Fiest, chairman for the 2012 event. "We'll have many different types of antique, vintage, and classic boats, including Glasspars similar to ones featured in James Bond movies and the actual boats used in the 1981 movie On Golden Pond, which starred Henry Fonda. We also are planning an 80-vendor flea market that will feature many nautical items."

In addition to hundreds of vessels on display in Wooten Park, the festival will offer boat and seaplane rides on Lake Dora. Ground transportation also will have a role during the three-day event with the Central Florida Woody Car Club on hand to showcase vintage automobiles. And rides aboard an old-fashioned steam train will delight the entire family.

"All modes of transportation will be represented this year," Fiest said. "We also plan to have a rail speedster on display, which is a small car that runs on railroad tracks."

The Sunnyland Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society represents all of Florida and is the largest ACBS chapter with more than 640 members. The chapter 's annual festival is considered one of the best in the country, drawing as many as 10,000 visitors from all over the U.S. and Canada.

Several specialty boat clubs will be represented during the festival including Florida's Glasspar and Jersey Skiff clubs. Fiest said many members of the Classic Race Boat Association also plan to stay for the Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival after they complete a racing event on March 17-18 on Lake Dora.

Admission to the Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival is $5 per day or $10 for all three days. Free parking will be available at the Tavares City Garage at 200 N. Sinclair Ave. For more information, please visit the Sunnyland Chapter's web site at http://acbs-sunnyland.org .

Online registration forms for the festival are now available.

Officer James Greco, founder and CEO of Long Island K-9 Service and Long Island Security Consultants, continues his humanitarian mission to provide expert explosives and narcotics detection throughout Long Island and the Metropolitan area. The celebrated security company has recently partnered with The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company to provide canine explosive detection teams for its line of ferries. The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company is the first ferry in the United States to receive a federal grant to implement explosive detection canine teams.

The ferry company has proved to be a vital link between Long Island, NY and southwestern Connecticut since 1883 and provides service to approximately 400,000 vehicles and one million passengers per year. The events of September 11, 2001 have served to reinforce the company's commitment to the safety and security of its constituency, the traveling public. With keen awareness of the potential for terrorist activity or narcotics exchange, the company has greatly enhanced security measures including increased awareness training for employees, cutting-edge technology, and explosives detection canine teams.

For more than 15 years, Officer Greco's celebrated company has employed an intensely trained team of canines and their handlers to seek out contraband and explosive devices at the state and municipal levels. In the private sector, Long Island K-9 was the first agency of its kind to introduce these specialized protection services, and continues to increase its roster of high profile clients.

Long Island K-9 Service has the largest canine training facility on Long Island, with a state-of-the art training facility located on two and one half sprawling acres in Manorville, Long Island.

The unique company is dual licensed by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the New York State Department of Labor to possess high explosives for its training purposes. The company has also sparked the interest of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) canine division, major airports and airlines, Fortune 500 companies and private security organizations. Officer Greco has appeared on Good Morning America, Japanese television, Inside Edition, News Channel 4, and has held interviews with The New York Times and 880 CBS News Radio. Seattle-based Trans Marine Propulsion Systems, Inc. (TMPS), known worldwide for their diesel service and engineering department, has secured a sales and service agreement from Valley Power Systems for the Volvo Penta Industrial Diesel line. TMPS will be providing sales and service for the west coast of the United States, which includes Alaska and Hawaii. This agreement also extends to British Columbia, Canada.

Volvo Penta is a world-leading supplier of engines and complete power systems for marine and industrial applications, and TMPS - a signed dealer under Valley Power Systems, Inc. - is an international port of call service facility with technicians on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

"The combination of service, spare parts and product is a win-win for both companies," says Shane Roeser, President of TMPS. "We are excited about the new arrangement. Being a partner with such a strong organization as the Volvo Group gives us clear advantages. We have the flexibility of a small organization together with the technical support from Volvo to fuel our growth and provide our customer base more diesel engine options."

TMPS has locations in Seattle, Washington and Tampa, Florida. "We can service most makes and types of diesel engines, including medium-speed and slow-speed engines for the marine industry and for diesel power plants," says Herbert Roeser, TMPS's Chairman. "We are one of the world's few service facilities that offer this range of experience."

More information on Trans Marine Propulsion Systems, Inc. and the Volvo Penta Diesel Line is available at www.transmarine.org or 206-282-9142.

* Long term maintenance program for Sea-Land's D-9 vessels, including regular scheduled main engine overhauls and planned maintenance on the Daihatsu generator engines through parts exchange and rotation program.

"We're excited about expanding our expertise to the Volvo Penta line," says Shane Roeser. "Our facilities include modern, fully-equipped machine shops staffed by highly-trained personnel, and the addition of a new diesel product line complements the other companies TMPS represents." Not only does the line complement TMPS's current lineup, but, Mr. Roeser stated, "our shop can handle the overhaul and recondition of all diesel engine components, including fuel equipment, not just from the product line we distribute, and we're glad to provide quotations for service and sales needs."

ShipCom, a provider of High Frequency (HF) maritime single sideband voice and electronic mail services has appointed Tusa Consulting Services (TCS) as its authorized radio consultant supportive of emergency operations throughout the states of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and coastal Texas.

ShipCom has been solely authorized by the Federal Communications Commission to provide voice and data communications services to municipal, county, state and federal agencies, hospitals and other emergency responders during emergency events. ShipCom's HF frequencies are monitored around the clock by skilled operators, thereby providing utmost call security during the most critical 48 hours following an emergency event.

Operation of HF equipment on ShipCom's network has been simplified through the use of half-duplex channels and idle channel marker tones. If a user hears ShipCom's unique idle channel tone on any of a set of pre-assigned channels, the user can simply key their radio, call the ShipCom operator and the operator will respond in kind. Once communications is established, the ShipCom operator can then patch the call to anywhere in the United States using the public switched telephone network.

ShipCom also operates an electronic mail service via High Frequency radio that operates in a fully automatic mode. The annual cost for ShipCom's emergency communications service is affordable and there are no per-minute charges for on-air services. Long distance telephone charges can be billed direct or to any major credit card.

Tusa Consulting Services (TCS) will assist ShipCom and its emergency responder clients in the development of compact, efficient radio antenna systems, procurement of suitable user equipment devices and user training.

For further information on this infrastructure-independent backup emergency communications medium, please contact ShipCom's Rene Stiegler (rene@shipcom.com).
